Essay about Campaign Finance Reform
Campaign finance reform has a broad history in America. In particular, campaign finance has
developed extensively in the past forty years, as the courts have attempted to create federal elections
that best sustain the ideals of a representative democracy. In the most recent Supreme Court decision
concerning campaign finance, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Court essentially
decided to treat corporations like individuals by allowing corporations to spend money on federal
elections through unlimited independent expenditures. In order to understand how the Supreme Court
justified this decision, however, the history of campaign finance in regards to individuals must be
examined. At the crux of these campaign finance laws ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, these laws are particularly important because they deal with discussion of public issues
and debate on the qualifications of candidates. This sort of speech allows citizens to make an informed
decision about which candidate they will elect. This is crucial to the operation of the government, for
those who are elected will shape the nation in a profound way. As legal scholar Alexander Meiklejohn
argued when explaining the necessity of protecting political speech, self governance can only exist
insofar as the voters acquire the intelligence, integrity, sensitivity, and generous devotion to the
general welfare that, in theory, casting a ballot is assumed to express. For these reasons, the ability to
spend money on elections is essential to the First Amendment, as it allows for the communication of
ideas and opinions that are crucial to democracy. The need to protect this first amendment right,
however, is balanced against the need to avoid corruption in federal elections. The Federal Election
Campaign Act of 1971 (FECA) attempted to revamp the structure of campaign finance, particularly
dealing with eliminate corrupt uses of campaign contributions. Money in the form of a contribution
can easily be seen as a bribe, or an attempt to influence a candidate in the contributor s favor. FECA

Conflict Criminological Theories
Differing from what we learned earlier from positivist, classical, and neoclassical theories, these
Critical Theories began to emerge around the early 1950s. Conflict, Radical, Peacemaking, and
Postmodern Theories are for the most part critical theories. They assume that, ...human beings are both
determined and determining. (INTEXT)p.116
Conflict Criminology is commonly known and associated with the ideas that the rich are against the
poor, right versus wrong, healthy versus the sick, and the good versus the bad (Bohm, R.M., Vogel, B.
L., 2011). All of these examples have in common a conflict between them. Whether it s formed over a
social status or through some form of trouble within individual lives, conflict exist in a form of
supremacy and control over others. In today s society, people are overpowered by unfair wages,
unaffordable education fees, unjust systems for jobs, and corrupt procedures of social wealth within
social classes. Along with a conflict of work, where careers are either offered for those who want to

Generally speaking, this theory contends that crime is linked to human suffering and that to put a full
stop to criminal behavior, society must first end suffering. This means that racism, discrimination,
poverty, family abuse, harassment, and all other forms of violent behavior and exploitation has to be

Comparing Rousseau And Mill On Liberty Essay
The term civil or social liberties is one that garners a lot of attention and focus from both Rousseau
and Mill, although they tackle the subject from slightly different angles. Rousseau believes that the
fundamental problem facing people s capacity to leave the state of nature and enter a society in which
their liberty is protected is the ability to find a form of association that defends and protects the person
and goods of each associate with all the common force, and by means of which each one, uniting with
all, nevertheless obeys only himself and remains as free as before (Rousseau 53). Man is forced to
leave the state of nature because their resistance to the obstacles faced is beginning to fail (Rousseau
52). Mill does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By joining civil society and becoming a part of the general will, man is enriching his actions with a
morality and rationality that was previously lacking. As he states in Book I, Chapter VIII, although in
this state he deprives himself of several advantages given to him by nature, he gains such great
ones...that changed him from a stupid, limited animal into an intelligent being and a man (Rousseau
56). What man posses in nature is an unlimited physical freedom to pursue everything that tempts
him, although this is viewed by Rousseau as almost an enslavement towards one s own instincts. In a
civil state man is benefited by substituting justice for instinct in his behaviour and giving his actions
the morality they previously lacked (Rousseau 54). In acting in accordance with the general will man
is granted the most important form of all freedoms, civil freedom.
Freedom of individuality is seen as the essential form of freedom according to Mill. The freedom of
thought and speech, discussed in Chapter 2, do play a pivotal role in ensuring freedom, however, they
are viewed more as a means to an end rather than being something that should be pursued for its own
good. The freedom of individuality is essential for human progress and development and it is only the
cultivation of individuality which produces, or can produce, well developed human beings (Mill 70). It
is this stressed importance on the importance of

Essay Mang Minno
Allusions to Vampires in Mang Minno In Mang Minno , a short story within Where The Elephants
Dance by Tess U Holthe , a young boy named Roman encounters a man named Mang Minno, who is
believed by the island people to be Jonah from the Bible. When Roman meets him, he wishes to learn
how to catch fish, so that he can show them to his father. He thinks that all he is getting himself
involved in is a method with which to gain large amounts of fish, very quickly. However, he soon
finds that he is getting involved in something far more sinister. As the story progresses, it becomes
clear the Mang Minno is some sort of evil entity. However, without looking for clues as to who and
what Mang Minno is, this story cannot be fully ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These clues are the most direct in the story, they take traits directly from vampire folk lore and
superimpose them on Mang Minno.
Mang Minno s attitude and aura are both also similar to that of a vampires; rather vile and dark. His
aura is well illustrated with the following examples: His voice is described as having an unsettling
effect on Roman: The bitterness of his voice touched me like fingers of the dead (81). This simile,
referring to the dead, shows that Roman may subconsciously be aware of what Mang Minno is. After
all, vampires are regarded as not being truly alive, but being life forces of the deceased. Mang Minno s
eyes are described as glowing (90), when Roman sees him from the boat he is riding with Aurora
(Mang Minno s daughter). Mang Minno s attitude is also illustrated by way of the disdainful
comments he makes about church:
In church, does it ever seem to you a kind of game? Hypocritical. Be humble, they say, yet people
come in their best clothes. Give penance, yet as they close their eyes and kneel, they compare who is
better dressed, the beauty of someone else s wife, the sway of her hips, they think of anything but
prayers.
(96)
This attitude is vile and dark, which Roman sees. It also fits in with the accounts of Mang Minno
being a devil worshiper, he would obviously be against God and churches. All of the above
demonstrates Mang Minno s

Canterbury Tales And The Pardoner s Tale
In The Canterbury Tales, the poet pilgrim stories written by Geoffrey Chaucer, tells a touching
commentary of religious and political tales. We believe that Chaucer is the narrator of every character
s tale while traveling on the journey to the shrine of Saint Thomas a Becket. The characters on this
journey were of various lifestyles. Their reasons for their pilgrimage and their expectations vary as
each tale is told. Two characters that can relate and then be the opposite of each other were the Parson
and the Pardoner. The Parson is a member of the Clergy Class, or part of the Church. Within the
church he is a parish priest: A holy minded man of good renown There was, and, poor, the Parson to a

give his money to the poor but he practices what he preaches. He knew God s word well and was able

Essay about Immense Heroism in Homer’s Iliad
Immense Heroism in Homer s Iliad
The Iliad opens with the anger of Peleus son, Achilleus, (1.1) and closes with the burial of Hektor,
breaker of horses (24.804).1 The bracketing of the poem with descriptions of these two men suggests
both their importance and their connection to one another. They lead parallel lives as the top fighters
in their respective armies, and, as the poem progresses, their lives and deaths become more and more
closely linked. They each struggle to fulfill the heroic ideal, and they both grapple with temptations
that lure them away from heroism. While Hektor embodies the human heroic ideal, Achilleus strives
to surpass human heroism to achieve some identification with the divine. These delusions of ... Show

He is also very attached to his wife, Andromache, the rest of his family, and the entire city of Troy.
When he travels into Troy to fetch Paris, he makes a deliberate detour to visit his family and they bid
him to remain within the city walls. But although he loves his family intensely, he resists the
temptation to remain with them. He says that he must answer the call to win for my own self great
glory (6.446). He is determined to stay on the path of the hero, but it is very difficult for him to resist
the pull of his loved ones. Just before his fatal encounter with Achilleus, he is almost swayed by his
family to stay within the walls of Troy. Why does the heart within me debate on these things? he asks
himself. (22.122) He is constantly torn between heroism and familial ties, but he finally chooses the
path of glory as he turns to face Achilleus, his murderer.
Achilleus, on the other hand, strays from the way of the hero by denying his mortality and fancying
himself a god. He is, after all, the son of a goddess. But Thetis could not endow her son with
immortality, only with greatness. 2 Achilleus attitude towards the battles taking place just outside his
ship is reminiscent of how the immortal gods react to the battles. For most of the poem, he sits back
from the fighting and observes it from afar. When the members of the embassy come to entice him
back into the battle, they find him delighting his heart in a

What Is Web Proxy Log Data And Preprocessing
of the Web is a prime target for librarians to tackle.
3. PROPOSED WORK
In the existing works the performance of the servers is improved by pre fetching the likely pages and
then caching them in the server. The existing works try to cluster the data based on the user interests
or the time taken by the server to respond back to the requests. In this proposed work improvement of
the performance is achieved by clustering the users in different group based on their location from
which the request is sent. Clustering the users based on the location improves the hit ratio. The web
log file provides all the data about the user such as user name, IP address, Time Stamp, Access
Request, number of Bytes

When all the items of the data set are assigned to one of the centroid the first stage is completed and
an early set of clusters is obtained. After the first stage we recalculate to find the new centroids and
then again find the distances between the data set entities and the centroids. The same process is
iterated till the centroids become stable and there are no more changes in it. The K Means algorithm is
fast robust and easier to understand compared to the other clustering algorithms. Also it provides
better results when the data items are well separated or distinct from each other.
In this study, the K Means algorithm is used to group the web data into different clusters based on the
location of the web users which is obtained from the IP addresses. The work assumes to separate the
users based on the location from where the request is being generated. After obtaining the clusters, the
algorithm to generate the association rules is applied.
3.4 Pattern Discovery using FP Growth Algorithm
The frequently occurring patterns in the data set are known as the frequent patterns. For instance, a
subset of items from the data set such as bread and butter appearing frequently in the transactions can
be called as a frequent item set. A web log file also provides a lot of information about the web users
and their behavior. Association rule is the widely used data mining technique which can be applied to
the web data as well to discover frequent

Katharsis In Medea, King Lear, And All My Sons
Poetics, by Aristotle, addresses each part of a tragedy and its significance, including katharsis. The
main purpose of a tragedy is to provoke pity or fear in the reader or audience, then a kommos occurs,
a song of lamentation, and the katharsis happens subsequently. The katharsis is a cleansing or purge
from those feelings of pity or fear, as the character whom faces tragedy from their faulty, laments.
Kommos creates katharsis through the death of children in the tragedies Medea, King Lear, and All
My Sons. All three plays follow Poetics guidelines, regarding the inclusion of katharsis and the tragic
event inspiring katharsis, to be among family members. However, each play approaches the aspect of
katharsis differently, because of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aristotle also expresses the fact that the tragic act that occurs is best to occur in a family to generate
more impactful feelings of katharsis. Poetics outline of katharsis, kommos, and the impact of a tragic
event occurring between family members are all aspects of tragedy that can be seen in Medea, King
Lear, and All My Sons. In the tragedy Medea, Jason is faced with realization of the death of his twin
sons who were killed by their, mother, Medea; he falls into agony as he laments, inspiring a katharsis
in the reader. Jason cheated on Medea, assuming that it was okay with her, saying, ...I/ Grew tired of
your bed and felt the need for a new bride (18). Jason desired a bride of title so that his current
children and future children could be brought up worthily (26). He betrayed his family and Medea s
love for another woman, causing Medea began to seek revenge. She decides to do two acts: kill her
husband s fiancée and kill her own sons. ...I shall kill my own children. /My children, there is none
who can give them safety, Medea expresses, as she plots her plan (26). Jason is unaware of this act
that his wife is ready to commit. No longer does he have a fiancée, but now he has lost his heirs to the
kingdom. The tragic act occurring among family members, happens in Medea, which was highlighted
in Poetics. The death of Medea and Jason s sons leads to Jason s

Summary Of Virginia Woolf s Mrs. Quot. B. Dubois
Virginia Woolf and W.E.B. Dubois writings are both capable of illuminating the issues in their
respective social systems. While Woolf challenges the aristocracy and a woman s place, Dubois
focuses on the challenges met by the African American community. Virginia Woolf s character in her
novel Mrs. Dalloway, Lucrezia Smith, endures being a foreigner in a recovering war torn London and
also the wife of a former soldier battling the demons that battle as left him. In his essay, Of Our
Spiritual Strivings, Dubois describes the African American community as being both American and
Black and the standards that each identity requires. Dubois description of double consciousness does
not apply to Lucrezia Smith because while she experiences self consciousness and duality she lacks
the gift of second sight meant to accompany them.
Dubois describes the African American experience as a double consciousness. He theorizes that the
world yields him no true self consciousness; however he goes on to describe the experience of having
a dual consciousness as a sense of always looking at oneself through the eyes of others (Dubois, 38).
Self consciousness is defined as being hyperaware and concerned with the opinions of others in
relation to oneself, therefore Dubois has contradicted himself. The aspect of examining oneself
through the eyes of others shall hereafter be referred to as self consciousness for the sake of clarity
between the theory of double consciousness and the

Contraceptives and Misconceptions Essay
Contraceptives and Misconceptions
There are many serious issues facing the U.S. today that require the rethinking of our problem solving
methods. In many situations, we may let our emotions interfere with our interpretations of the facts.
When a question of morals is involved, we often focus on what we want and not on what we ve got.
One of the most complicated and emotional issues today is the subject of making contraceptives
available to teenagers. Can it be that adult misconceptions are causing teenage conceptions?
The statistics on teen sex are staggering. According to Mrs. Seth, spokesperson for Planned
Parenthood, Eighty five percent of high school students, by the time they reach the twelfth grade, are

If children don t have sex, they don t need protection. If they do have sex, pregnancy and sexually
transmitted diseases shouldn t be a price they have to pay for the attitudes of adults who don t
approve. Unfortunately, teenagers can and do have sex without parental approval. The truth becomes
apparent when a teen becomes a parent.
Parents try to be aware of what their children are doing; however, it is a misconception to think that
sexual activity can be controlled at all times. Our society, not biology, declares that teens are not
supposed to engage in sex. Teenagers are designed by nature to have sex, are possessed of all the
necessary equipment to do so, and have the mental capabilities to hide such behavior from adults. The
sex drive is not caused by teachers, contraceptives, or the media. Although well meant, the notion that
parental warnings can make sex less appealing is arrogant and foolish. Teenagers are having sex
without permission, and the goal must be to minimize the damage, not look for someone to blame. As
adults struggle with controlling the actions of their children, they should protect them at the same
time. If children are forbidden to have sex, it is unlikely that they will discuss sexual problems with
the very person who told them it is not permissible. There must be options available to them, such as
sex education

Kaiser fled the country in November 1918 (Llewellyn, J. Weimar Republic Timeline ) and the SDP
(Social Democratic Party) leader Philipp Scheidemann made Germany into the Weimar Republic (
Llewellyn, J. Weimar Republic Timeline ). Germany at the time had thought that the Treaty would be
based on the Woodrow Wilson s original 14 points that were made in january 8 1918( fourteen points
). Later on these points would be re evaluated at the Paris Peace Conference and altered( Todd, Allan

The Treaty got rid of 13% of their land 10% of their population with most of their land being
economically beneficial (Todd, Allan). The reason why some historians believe that the Treaty of
Versaille was the root cause of economic failure is because of the war guilt clause, Article 231.
ARTICLE 231 The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility
of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated
Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them
by the aggression of Germany and her allies. (Treaty of Peace). With their land loss and population
decrease Germany was only able to pay 2.5% of their annual GDP for reparations(HANTKE, MAX).
They were expected to pay 230 million gold marks which they could only offer 30 million gold marks
(20th century international relations). With most of their population missing and with less land they
can produce less than they could before the war while they have to make more than before because of
the war guilt clause of Article 231. That s why the the treaty is significant to the economic collapse of
Germany and why some historians would believe that this was the root cause

Professional Athletes Salaries
Sport Athletes Salaries Are professional athletes overpaid? This topic has been argued for some time
now. It is said that pro athletes are paid way too much money for playing a sport. On the other side,
there are the ones that say that the money is fairly deserved because of their hard work to get to where
they are. Should pro athletes salaries drop or stay as is? Do the top athletes deserve their pay? Athletes
deserve the money they receive because of their hard work, dedication, and commitment to their

Furthermore, there are also bad sides to being a pro athlete, so the money is not an easy make. Having
all that money, it may be thought that a pro athlete s life is easy to live with all that money in their

athletes get paid large amounts of money, there are a lot of down sides to being a well known and paid
pro. For one, the publicity might be overwhelming, not to mention all the criticism an athlete receives
for a poor performance. How would it feel to walk around town having cameras flashing everywhere
you go, waiting to catch you at the wrong moments for a photo just to be uploaded for the world to
see? Pros have no privacy. Having no privacy means one cannot enjoy life outside of the sport. Having
to worry about every move doesn t seem fair because they also want a life outside of their desired
profession. Before criticizing pro athletes and saying they get paid way too much, one should also
realize that their lives aren t so easy. Yes, they have money, but money doesn t make life easier for
these athletes. People should think twice before assuming that professional athletes are overpaid.

concluding that they re overpaid athletes that just do a sport. One cannot say pro athletes are overpaid

Difference Between Thanks And Apologies
For a long time, the good behaviors have become a standard in appreciating the human personality.
Thanks and apologies are one of the manifestations of a culture, politeness in social relations. When
thanks and apologies are showed honestly, on one hand reflects the qualities of the individual. On the
other hand they can help people understand each other more easily. In many cases, thanks or apologies
not only bring joy to recipients, but also clear away the problems, troubles, so that people live more
altruistic.

But nowadays, thanks and apologies tend to decrease in social communication. In a lot of cases, some
people ask for directions but forgot to thank. Many of you think it s their jobs, but you forget that they

Many people argue that the cause of this situation is since the standards of behavior are not tight or
industrial lifestyle makes us changes ... But still one more reason, it is a habit. Often only children

House Of Flying Daggers And Curse Of The Golden Flower By...
Zhang Yimou directed both the critically acclaimed House of Flying Daggers and the visual
masterpiece Curse of the Golden Flower, movies with wuxia influences which are not only popular
locally, but overseas as well. Yimou infuses his films with several themes that reinforce the Chinese
tradition of upholding social, political, and natural norms. Despite their differences and due to their
similarities, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower emphasize the importance of
obeying authority and maintaining harmony in Chinese culture.
The theme of desire, although different kinds, is evident in both films. A story about three ill fated
lovers, House of Flying Daggers begins with a beautiful performance by Zhang Ziyi. She flits back
and forth lyrically in a show of dance and unmistakable talent. She is not what she seems. The
melodic harmony of the instrumental accompaniment strikes a strong contrast against the phrases she
sings softly, albeit slightly out of key. Zhang, the main love interest, croons about the pursuit of a
single woman by two enemy states, paralleling the conflict of the story itself. The central conflict of
House of Flying Daggers raises several issues. Can a person authentically love more than one person?
What is the cost of romantic pursuits, and is that price worth the sacrifice made? Unfortunately, this
desire that defies the natural order of things, an unconventional threesome, so to speak, ends only in
pain and heartbreak. On the other

Star Trek Racism

Star Trek and Racism
Star Trek is one of the most successful and lasting entertainment franchises of all time. While it takes
place in a futuristic society, the series explores issues that were widespread in the time of it s making.
This includes one of the most prevalent issues of our time: racism. Thanks to the, at the time, radical
philosophy of Gene Roddenberry, the show attracted a large audience. The adventurous and utopian
society made many people hope for a future where prejudice was a thing of the past, and anyone could
boldly go where no man has gone before. After making such a lasting stamp on society, I am
interested in learning how the Star Trek series allowed viewers to learn and accept the truth of
uncomfortable social and personal matters within our society. In the 1960 s, the Civil Rights
Movement in the United States had finally gained ground and much progress had been made.
However, segregation was still very prevalent in society. In an era when racism was extensive, Star
Trek featured a racially diverse crew; this included Lieutenant Uhura, an African American woman in
charge of Communications and Lieutenant Sulu an Asian helmsman. This revolutionary decision
practically guaranteed that Star Trek would have a long lasting impression on viewers.

Squaws And Nobel Maidens
American Indians have been stereotyped in different forms of media for entertainment purposes for
centuries. The male stereotypes, such as the Nobel Savage, are widely known in literature. American
Indian women have also fallen victim to their own set of stereotypes. Two common labels regarding
American Indian women are Squaws, and Nobel Maidens. European Americans have done their best
to pigeonhole American Indians into these stereotypes, however, American Indian women are more
complex than that. History dictates that these women had many roles in their respective tribes to
include prominent positions.
Since Europeans first arrived in the Americas in the late 1400s, they viewed American Indian
relationships through their own cultural biases. Women were observed working alongside men, each
contributing to the good of the tribe. Through the lens of cultural bias, Europeans immediately labeled
these women as slaves, who were no better than animals. The early settlers failed to recognize that
women were seen as equal to their male counterparts. Each sex had their own set of tasks, but all tasks
were valued without one out weighing another (Lajimodiere, 2013). The slave stereotype continued to
be perpetuated for centuries and became synonymous with the term Squaw. It infected the way
American Indian women were treated by white men not only in the media, but in real life as well. In
the media the Indian Squaw was routinely portrayed as a household servant, or a hyper

rebellion, and ultimately, Katniss herself; she becomes the Mockingjay.
Media/pop culture example: In Frozen, Elsa s gloves seem to be used to solely hide her magical power
to prevent hurting anyone but the deeper meaning is that the gloves represent Elsa s fear of showing
people who she really is because she is different than the others. Likewise, Hans uses his gloves to
mask his true evil self near the end of the movie, as he tries to kill Anna by leaving her to freeze to

Emerson Thematic Statement
Write a thematic statement for the essay Self Reliance . Explain how Emerson s idea of Self Reliance
is different from and similar to the common use of the term (take care of your own needs and don t
depend on others outside yourself). The essay Self Reliance is different from the definition of only
thinking of one s own needs in the sense that Emerson explains that one should not only depend on
themselves but to also not submit to the majority of ideas in society and obey by one s own beliefs.
Emerson relates being independent or Self Reliant to the genuine feelings of an individual and how it
should be taken pride of rather than pushed away by the conformities of society. Give 5 examples of
figurative language and analyze how Emerson uses them to convey his message of self reliance (Hint:
your analysis should link back to the purpose you mention in the thematic statement above). 1 Joint
Stock Company: The meaning of this word is a company owned by multiple shareholders, but
Emerson uses it in the sense of America being bound together through majority belief systems, but
individual ideas should be recognized as well. 2 Sculpture: A sculpture is described as a carving of a
3D object, Emerson uses it as a term for explaining the memories that make a significant deal in
society and being significant individually 3 Befriends: Acting like a friend, helping someone out, used
by Emerson, he explains that befriending represents the good that is brought into the world

Leon Festinger s Report
Leon Festinger constructed experiments to test his theory of irreconcilable ideas. Leon was curious of
how humans would react if prophecy failed. In his first experiment, Festinger organized multiple
cohorts to pose as a believer into a cult that was convinced a flood would take over their homes. The
cult believed a spaceship would come to their rescue on December 21. Members sold homes, quit
jobs, and even left others behind. However, no bizarre rains touched down that night. What Festinger
found, in his infiltration of the cult and in his reading of the history, was that it is precisely when a
belief is disconfirmed that religious groups begin proselytize, a sort of desperate defense mechanism
(Slater 116). This particular observation led

The Monkey s Paw Foreshadowing Analysis
Foreshadowing creates tension, suspense and sometimes both. The Monkey s Paw by W.W. Jacobs is a
book that has tension in the beginning and suspense in the ending, it s a good short story but, it s a bit
confusing ,messed up and shows faith is not to be messed with. In the beginning Mr.White was
waiting a visit from a old friend who travels around the world. When he came over he showed him a
magical paw that grants any man 3 wishes but it has a twist to it every wish you grant will be more
bad than good. The man name was sergeant major. The man told Mr.White and his family that the

Brown v Board of Education Essay
On the seventeenth day in May 1954 a decision was made which changed things in the United States
dramatically. For millions of black Americans, news of the U.S. Supreme Court s landmark decision in
Brown v. Board of Education meant, at last, that they and their children no longer had to attend
separate schools. Brown v. Board of Education was a Supreme Court ruling that changed the life of
every American forever.
In Topeka, Kansas, a black third grader named Linda Brown had to walk one mile through a railroad
switchyard to get to her black elementary school, even though a white elementary school was only
seven blocks away. Linda s father, Oliver Brown, tried to enroll her in the white elementary school,

Brown and the NAACP appealed to the Supreme Court on October 1, 1951. Their case was combined
with other cases that challenged school segregation in South Carolina, Virginia, and Delaware. The
Supreme Court first heard the cases on December 9, 1952, but failed to reach a decision. The judges
had to decide whether or not the writers of the Fourteenth Amendment had desegregated schools in
mind. The court ruling eventually came to be unanimous. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
asked this question in the decision read on May 17, 1954: Does segregation of children in public
schools solely on the basis of race, even though the physical facilities and other tangible factors may
be equal, deprive children of the minority group of equal educational opportunities? (The National
Center for Public Research). They struck down the separate but equal doctrine of Plessy for public
education saying that it has no place , ruled in favor of the plaintiffs, and required the desegregation of
schools across America (The National Center For Public Research).
On that Monday in May, the high court s ruling that outlawed school segregation in the United States
generated urgent news flashes on the radio and frenzied black. One swift and unanimous decision by
the top judges in the land was going to end segregation in public schools. Southern politicians reacted
with such fury and fear that they immediately called the day Black Monday. South Carolina Gov.

The Impact Of The Roaring Twenties And The Jazz Period Of...
An event that happened in America in the decade of the 1920s there was a large creative movement
that affected or encouraged change in the United States history. According to the online Openstax
textbook called U.S. History published by P. Scott Corbett, Volker Janssen, John M. Lund, Todd
Pfannenstiel and Paul Vickery states This mixture of social, political, economic, and cultural change
and conflict gave the decade the nickname the Roaring Twenties or the Jazz Age . A widespread of
economic prosperity, social change and a form of expression made a way for society to begin to walk
down the path of the modern age. Especially for women, African Americans, and the youth generation.
Thereby, redefining the nation for the youth to forget about the post world war one era and embrace
the new morality, for African American to showcase their intellectual contributions and link their
struggle to the world, for women to expand their human rights and be liberated from society standards,
and for American to begin their new lives because of invention in medicine and technology. So, how
did the Roaring Twenties and or the Jazz Age affect the decade of the 1920s in the United States
history?
First, there was a variety of inventions that was beneficial to health and wellness, and economically

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Traditional Education
Traditional Education is a way of teaching that is no longer efficient in the 21st century.
By the 21st century, traditional ways of teaching may no longer be efficient. A child drops out of

Raz On The Autonomy Of Legal Reasoning
The autonomous nature of legal reasoning is the subject of much contention amongst legal actors and
is understood to be restrictively in positivist Raz . In his paper On the Autonomy of Legal Reasoning
Raz asserts that legal reasoning reasoning according to law is an instance of moral reasoning, that
legal reasoning is not, in the strong sense, autonomous. This view is based on the assumption that
legal doctrines are only justified if they are morally justified. Below, follows an appraisal of the
various justifications of this assertion and a defence of Raz s position on the autonomy of legal
reasoning.
Legal positivism formulated by English jurist John Austin characterises the system of laws, the
existence of which, is dependent on social facts . Positivism accepts the Separation thesis that there is
no necessary connection between law and morality . To this end, it denies any necessary moral criteria
of legality . Furthermore, it does not necessarily accept that moral principles can directly determine
whether certain rules are valid law, as naturalism does . ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Raz, the former is underpinned by the Sources thesis which states that all law is source
based; that is, its existence and content can be determined by reference to social facts alone. The latter

in this case a process of empirical analysis, moral reasoning, and deduction from serious rules. Thus, it
follows from his argument, that reasoning about or according to the law is an occurrence of the

Health And Wellness Is Sleep Disorders
The topic that comes to mind when I think about health and wellness is sleep disorders. This is
because my mom struggled with a sleep disorder called narcolepsy for some time. The matter that I
would specify as my research problem is: How living with narcolepsy affects quality of life . This is a
precise subject that outlines an area of interest to me that I would like to learn more about. My original
idea was sleep disorders, and I narrowed it down to a specific disorder. After that, I made it even more
precise by pinpointing a specific idea in regards to this topic.
I would begin searching for sources for this research topic on the Herzing University website in the
library section. This library has several reliable databases that can be used to search for foundations of
information. Several of these databases include health , medical , or wellness right in the title. It would
be wise to use these databases to search for information about this specific topic rather than a more
general database because the more precise databases will usually give more accurate results. It is
important to remember what make a source great, and what makes a source not reliable at all.

Single Sex School Essay
Does your child s education matter to you? I believe single sex schools are better than co education
schools. My reasons behind this opinion are single sex schooling has less distraction in class, single
sex schools have better learning results and lastly boys and girls in a same sex environment are more
likely to pursue subjects they usually would not try.
Single sex schools have less distractions in class. I believe this because in a single sex environment
boys do not feel the need to impress girls and girls would not have to downplay their strengths to
impress boys. The first example to backup my point is a study by the Australian Council for
Educational Research where they said research indicates that single sex schools improve ... Show

A second example to help argue my point is when United Kingdom educator Graham Able compared
student performance in 30 single sex and co educational schools, he found the academic advantage of
single sex schooling even greater for boys. This evidence shows that single sex is the better school
option for learning and getter better academic results, especially if your child is a boy. Single sex
schooling is the better choice when selecting your child s future school specially when you are looking
for the best possible education.
In single sex schools boys and girls excel in subjects they usually would not. Single sex schools help
children do well in subjects they usually would not be good at or subjects they would not usually try.
For example girls do better at maths and science in all girl schools; boys do better in languages and the
arts in all boy schools. My first example to backup my point is a study by Cambridge University in
2006 where their research showed boys improved in english and foreign languages in single sex
classes, and girls improved in maths and physics. This proves girls and boys do better in subjects they
usually would not do because they are more comfortable in a single sex school rather than a co
educational school. A second piece of evidence to help argue my point is a United States study that
found boys at single sex

Essay about Three Main Environments of Northanger Abbey
There are three main environments in which the novel, Northanger

The initial location is Fullerton and it is from here Catherine begins her journey. This is also the place
to which Catherine returns at the end of the narrative. By the very fact that Fullerton is located at the

novel.
Catherine wants to leave Fullerton, as it is not exciting enough and certainly not as glamorous a place

On arriving in Bath, it is strange that although Bath is such a thriving town of social activity, she fails
to make new acquaintances or renew any old ones. It is here that Catherine meets Henry Tilney and
the Thorpe family.
Bath lacks the stability of Fullerton and it is this insincerity that enables Bath to be seen as a place
where it is easy to practise deceit. Bath is full of new acquaintances and thus easy to befriend and
utilise people to assist in any schemes and to fall back upon, if caught. It is here that Isabella deceives
the trusting Catherine for longer than would be possible in a close nit environment like
Fullerton.
In contrast to Isabella, Catherine s new friend, Henry Tilney, is aware of the falseness of Bath. He puts
up with the shallow entertainment in the hope he finds a worthy friend there, as happens on meeting
Catherine. Indeed, while dancing with Catherine, he convey his amusement that many visitors to Bath
come to dislike the place, but prolong their stay only to leave when money runs out, thus presenting a
damaging fascination with Bath. He thinks that Bath has
little variety and that Catherine should be tired of it at the end of six weeks .
Bath, although a real geographical location, is an artificial environment separate from reality. People
are preoccupied with fashion and dance rather than hard work. It is a place for the wealthy, those who

Tsa Should Use Full Body Scanners
After the devastating terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, TSA (Transportation Security
Administration) was created and have since then beefed up their security. Because of all the new
security devices and rules taking place now, the wait time at in the security line is longer, but for a
good reason. On an average day, TSA screens 1.1 million bags. Of those 1.1 million bags, around
50,000 of them have to be checked thoroughly due to suspicious items inside the bags. The wait time
at airport security lines has increased because of new threats. Because of an increase in the wait time
at the security line, some people find it very frustrating and think that all the precautions are
unnecessary. Those people are wrong though. In the past years since TSA was created, multiple
bomber attacks have been attempted but have yet to succeed due to TSA keeping up with its safety
requirements. In 2010, TSA started to use full body scanners. Some people are uncomfortable with the
idea that when going through the body scanners, they are almost viewed completely naked and worry
that those photos will be leaked. In Emily Holbrook s article, Airport Security: privacy vs. safety, she
makes an interesting pint when it comes to body scanners by quoting Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who said,

Police Use Of Force Essay
Officers are trained to use certain measures to prevent an incident from escalating to brutal or deadly
force and due to the environment of most minority communities, officers frequently have to resort to
use of force. In a study by the Center for Policing Equity, which took three years to conduct, reviewed
19,000 cases of use of force by officers representing 11 cities between 2010 and 2015. They found that
officers only employ use of force in 2 percent of all the police citizen interactions, however African
Americans were subjected to use of force 3 times the number of Caucasians, showing a

Ethanol False Economy
In the words of John McCain, corn based ethanol has been a case study in the law of unintended
consequences (Stossel 00:00:43 00:00:48). This news would astonish most because the general public
has been told that ethanol is beneficial for the United States, due to it being a renewable resource,
however, that is not true. When one thinks of the qualities of a renewable resource, they think of it
being beneficial to the environment, having a positive energy balance, not requiring subsidies,
mandates, and tariffs to function, and should not raise the price of its main input. Most renewable
resources meet these goals, corn ethanol, however, does not meet any of these goals. It is safe to call
ethanol a false economy because it does not have any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ethanol production process starts with growing corn, on average an acre of corn yields close to
7,110 pounds of corn that require 140 gallons of fossil fuels to grow through the use of liquid fertilizer
and powering machinery (Ethanol Fuel from Corn par. 4). The corn is harvested and transported to an
ethanol refinery where it is ground, then water is added to create a mash in which enzymes break
down the corn into sugar, afterward the sugar is mixed with yeast and fermented to produce ethanol
(Ethanol Fuel: is ethanol par. 9 10). During the process of growing and processing the corn needed to
manufacture one gallon of ethanol, it requires 131,000 British Thermal Units (BTU) to generate a
gallon of ethanol while a gallon of ethanol produces only 77,000 BTU (Ethanol Fuel from Corn par.
5). The net ratio of energy for ethanol production is undesirable because ethanol has barely over half
of the total energy needed to produce ethanol. Other materials can produce ethanol, such as switch
grass or wood biomass, however, their energy returns are just as atrocious, needing forty five percent
and fifty seven percent more energy to produce ethanol than it provides, respectively (Lang par. 5).

The Iron Mills By Rebecca Harding Davis Essay
Throughout Cultural Perspectives, many influential texts have been read, analyzed, and discussed.
One text, Life in the Iron Mills by Rebecca Harding Davis, integrates the thoughts of quite a few
authors that have been discussed this semester. Through employing a Marxist view of history there are
always the haves and the have nots one can see that Life in the Iron Mills exemplifies the struggles
that face many have not citizens throughout history. One can then see the clear connections to various
authors such as Mary Wollstonecraft, W.E.B. DuBois, Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels, and Adam
Smith.
Life in the Iron Mills is a tragic yet poignant story of the effects of a man s socioeconomic status.
Although set in the nineteenth century, the story is all too familiar. The short story begins with a
reflective narrator begging the audience to read the story with an open mind not tainted by the ideals
of high society (Davis). The narrator suggests the story be read from the perspective of the
protagonist, Hugh Wolfe, a lowly puddler at the iron mill (Davis). Hugh works long, hard hours at the
mill for little to no pay in attempts to provide not only for himself but also for his cousin, Deborah,
and a young girl, Janey (Davis). In Hugh s spare time at the mill, he carves sculptures out of korl
(Davis). Hugh leads a typical life of a working class citizen.
One night, the owner and a few other upper class men visited the mill to examine the furnaces (Davis).

Why Did Portugal Gain The Independence Of Brazil
In September of 1822, Brazil broke away from Portugal and became its own nation. Although this was

that it is a strong and independent nation, which we must not overlook. Firstly, in the eyes of Portugal
Brazil had little to no importance. Portugal was mostly focused on the slave trade from Africa to India.
In the middle of the 16th century, France threatened to overtake Brazil from Portugal, which made
Portugal start to focus on populating and defending Brazil. Brazil had little exporting so in order for

Happiness Is The Best Thing Essay
For Aristotle, happiness is the best thing, for it is a thing for and in itself. Happiness is derived from
ethics, and ethics is answer to how you achieve happiness. Virtue is a means in which ethics are
preformed and are derived from passions and actions. That is, passions and actions are means in which
ethical virtue is performed in order to gain happiness. Aristotle believes that for anything to be known
it must derive from four causes. From these causes we understand what ethics is and its relation to the
soul, virtue and how these are used to obtain happiness. Though happiness is the final goal it still must
be journeyed through introspective and active movements by the self. The four causes are a means to
argue a philosophical question. They include efficient causes; the source of movement that will be
understood as the why or by which. Material cause is concerned with the out of which and formal
cause deals with form or shape and is understood as the into which or what was being. The purpose of
these causes is to come to a conclusion, the final cause, or rather an end or goal; the desire that the
original philosophical question is concerned with and it is understood as for the sake of which. It is by
these four causes we can understand what ethics deals with and how we understand it s purpose.
Ethics is concerned with what is the good life for me, and the final cause will be happiness. The
remaining causes will help in understanding why activity and emotions

Characters Medea was born under king Aetees of Colchis as a witch princess. As a youth she met

Salvador Late or Early includes figurative language all throughout the short story. For example,
Salvador with eyes the color of caterpillar, (Paragraph 1, Line 1) is a metaphor suggesting
metamorphosis and even though he is a caterpillar stuck inside its cocoon, he will soon become a
beautiful, graceful butterfly. This metaphor gives rise to the artistic voice and thematic meaning
because the message this short story is trying to send is that no matter how worthless one may feel and
if they think that they ll never have enough power to hatch out of their cocoon, in the end, they will
always become the beautiful, graceful butterfly they were all along. Another example of figurative
language in Salvador Late or Early is a metaphor in paragraph 2: Arturito has dropped the cigar box of
crayons, has let go the hundred little fingers of red, green, yellow, blue, and nub of black sticks that
tumble and spill over and beyond the asphalt puddles... This symbolizes a rainbow after a storm, and
the deeper meaning behind this symbolism is that although Salvador is caught in the middle of a brutal

  • 2. Essay about Campaign Finance Reform Campaign finance reform has a broad history in America. In particular, campaign finance has developed extensively in the past forty years, as the courts have attempted to create federal elections that best sustain the ideals of a representative democracy. In the most recent Supreme Court decision concerning campaign finance, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Court essentially decided to treat corporations like individuals by allowing corporations to spend money on federal elections through unlimited independent expenditures. In order to understand how the Supreme Court justified this decision, however, the history of campaign finance in regards to individuals must be examined. At the crux of these campaign finance laws ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, these laws are particularly important because they deal with discussion of public issues and debate on the qualifications of candidates. This sort of speech allows citizens to make an informed decision about which candidate they will elect. This is crucial to the operation of the government, for those who are elected will shape the nation in a profound way. As legal scholar Alexander Meiklejohn argued when explaining the necessity of protecting political speech, self governance can only exist insofar as the voters acquire the intelligence, integrity, sensitivity, and generous devotion to the general welfare that, in theory, casting a ballot is assumed to express. For these reasons, the ability to spend money on elections is essential to the First Amendment, as it allows for the communication of ideas and opinions that are crucial to democracy. The need to protect this first amendment right, however, is balanced against the need to avoid corruption in federal elections. The Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 (FECA) attempted to revamp the structure of campaign finance, particularly dealing with eliminate corrupt uses of campaign contributions. Money in the form of a contribution can easily be seen as a bribe, or an attempt to influence a candidate in the contributor s favor. FECA required ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Conflict Criminological Theories Differing from what we learned earlier from positivist, classical, and neoclassical theories, these Critical Theories began to emerge around the early 1950s. Conflict, Radical, Peacemaking, and Postmodern Theories are for the most part critical theories. They assume that, ...human beings are both determined and determining. (INTEXT)p.116 Conflict Criminology is commonly known and associated with the ideas that the rich are against the poor, right versus wrong, healthy versus the sick, and the good versus the bad (Bohm, R.M., Vogel, B. L., 2011). All of these examples have in common a conflict between them. Whether it s formed over a social status or through some form of trouble within individual lives, conflict exist in a form of supremacy and control over others. In today s society, people are overpowered by unfair wages, unaffordable education fees, unjust systems for jobs, and corrupt procedures of social wealth within social classes. Crime is not forgiven and the peace perception emphasizes social justice of society. Generally speaking, this theory contends that crime is linked to human suffering and that to put a full stop to criminal behavior, society must first end suffering. • 4. Comparing Rousseau And Mill On Liberty Essay The term civil or social liberties is one that garners a lot of attention and focus from both Rousseau and Mill, although they tackle the subject from slightly different angles. Rousseau believes that the fundamental problem facing people s capacity to leave the state of nature and enter a society in which their liberty is protected is the ability to find a form of association that defends and protects the person and goods of each associate with all the common force, and by means of which each one, uniting with all, nevertheless obeys only himself and remains as free as before (Rousseau 53). Man is forced to leave the state of nature because their resistance to the obstacles faced is beginning to fail (Rousseau 52). Mill does not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By joining civil society and becoming a part of the general will, man is enriching his actions with a morality and rationality that was previously lacking. As he states in Book I, Chapter VIII, although in this state he deprives himself of several advantages given to him by nature, he gains such great ones...that changed him from a stupid, limited animal into an intelligent being and a man (Rousseau 56). What man posses in nature is an unlimited physical freedom to pursue everything that tempts him, although this is viewed by Rousseau as almost an enslavement towards one s own instincts. In a civil state man is benefited by substituting justice for instinct in his behaviour and giving his actions the morality they previously lacked (Rousseau 54). In acting in accordance with the general will man is granted the most important form of all freedoms, civil freedom. Freedom of individuality is seen as the essential form of freedom according to Mill. The freedom of thought and speech, discussed in Chapter 2, do play a pivotal role in ensuring freedom, however, they are viewed more as a means to an end rather than being something that should be pursued for its own good. The freedom of individuality is essential for human progress and development and it is only the cultivation of individuality which produces, or can produce, well developed human beings (Mill 70). It is this stressed importance on the importance of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay Mang Minno Allusions to Vampires in Mang Minno In Mang Minno , a short story within Where The Elephants Dance by Tess U Holthe , a young boy named Roman encounters a man named Mang Minno, who is believed by the island people to be Jonah from the Bible. When Roman meets him, he wishes to learn how to catch fish, so that he can show them to his father. He thinks that all he is getting himself involved in is a method with which to gain large amounts of fish, very quickly. However, he soon finds that he is getting involved in something far more sinister. As the story progresses, it becomes clear the Mang Minno is some sort of evil entity. However, without looking for clues as to who and what Mang Minno is, this story cannot be fully ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These clues are the most direct in the story, they take traits directly from vampire folk lore and superimpose them on Mang Minno. Mang Minno s attitude and aura are both also similar to that of a vampires; rather vile and dark. His aura is well illustrated with the following examples: His voice is described as having an unsettling effect on Roman: The bitterness of his voice touched me like fingers of the dead (81). This simile, referring to the dead, shows that Roman may subconsciously be aware of what Mang Minno is. After all, vampires are regarded as not being truly alive, but being life forces of the deceased. Mang Minno s eyes are described as glowing (90), when Roman sees him from the boat he is riding with Aurora (Mang Minno s daughter). Mang Minno s attitude is also illustrated by way of the disdainful comments he makes about church: In church, does it ever seem to you a kind of game? Hypocritical. Be humble, they say, yet people come in their best clothes. Give penance, yet as they close their eyes and kneel, they compare who is better dressed, the beauty of someone else s wife, the sway of her hips, they think of anything but prayers. (96) This attitude is vile and dark, which Roman sees. It also fits in with the accounts of Mang Minno being a devil worshiper, he would obviously be against God and churches. We believe that Chaucer is the narrator of every character s tale while traveling on the journey to the shrine of Saint Thomas a Becket. The characters on this journey were of various lifestyles. Their reasons for their pilgrimage and their expectations vary as each tale is told. Two characters that can relate and then be the opposite of each other were the Parson and the Pardoner. • 7. Essay about Immense Heroism in Homer’s Iliad Immense Heroism in Homer s Iliad The Iliad opens with the anger of Peleus son, Achilleus, (1.1) and closes with the burial of Hektor, breaker of horses (24.804).1 The bracketing of the poem with descriptions of these two men suggests both their importance and their connection to one another. They lead parallel lives as the top fighters in their respective armies, and, as the poem progresses, their lives and deaths become more and more closely linked. They each struggle to fulfill the heroic ideal, and they both grapple with temptations that lure them away from heroism. While Hektor embodies the human heroic ideal, Achilleus strives to surpass human heroism to achieve some identification with the divine. These delusions of ... But although he loves his family intensely, he resists the temptation to remain with them. He says that he must answer the call to win for my own self great glory (6.446). He is determined to stay on the path of the hero, but it is very difficult for him to resist the pull of his loved ones. Just before his fatal encounter with Achilleus, he is almost swayed by his family to stay within the walls of Troy. Why does the heart within me debate on these things? he asks himself. (22.122) He is constantly torn between heroism and familial ties, but he finally chooses the path of glory as he turns to face Achilleus, his murderer. Achilleus, on the other hand, strays from the way of the hero by denying his mortality and fancying himself a god. He is, after all, the son of a goddess. But Thetis could not endow her son with immortality, only with greatness. 2 Achilleus attitude towards the battles taking place just outside his ship is reminiscent of how the immortal gods react to the battles. While Woolf challenges the aristocracy and a woman s place, Dubois focuses on the challenges met by the African American community. Virginia Woolf s character in her novel Mrs. Dalloway, Lucrezia Smith, endures being a foreigner in a recovering war torn London and also the wife of a former soldier battling the demons that battle as left him. In his essay, Of Our Spiritual Strivings, Dubois describes the African American community as being both American and Black and the standards that each identity requires. Dubois description of double consciousness does not apply to Lucrezia Smith because while she experiences self consciousness and duality she lacks the gift of second sight meant to accompany them. Dubois describes the African American experience as a double consciousness. He theorizes that the world yields him no true self consciousness; however he goes on to describe the experience of having a dual consciousness as a sense of always looking at oneself through the eyes of others (Dubois, 38). Self consciousness is defined as being hyperaware and concerned with the opinions of others in relation to oneself, therefore Dubois has contradicted himself. Parents try to be aware of what their children are doing; however, it is a misconception to think that sexual activity can be controlled at all times. Our society, not biology, declares that teens are not supposed to engage in sex. Teenagers are designed by nature to have sex, are possessed of all the necessary equipment to do so, and have the mental capabilities to hide such behavior from adults. The sex drive is not caused by teachers, contraceptives, or the media. Although well meant, the notion that parental warnings can make sex less appealing is arrogant and foolish. Zhang Yimou directed both the critically acclaimed House of Flying Daggers and the visual masterpiece Curse of the Golden Flower, movies with wuxia influences which are not only popular locally, but overseas as well. Yimou infuses his films with several themes that reinforce the Chinese tradition of upholding social, political, and natural norms. Despite their differences and due to their similarities, House of Flying Daggers and Curse of the Golden Flower emphasize the importance of obeying authority and maintaining harmony in Chinese culture. The theme of desire, although different kinds, is evident in both films. A story about three ill fated lovers, House of Flying Daggers begins with a beautiful performance by Zhang Ziyi. She flits back and forth lyrically in a show of dance and unmistakable talent. She is not what she seems. The melodic harmony of the instrumental accompaniment strikes a strong contrast against the phrases she sings softly, albeit slightly out of key. While it takes place in a futuristic society, the series explores issues that were widespread in the time of it s making. This includes one of the most prevalent issues of our time: racism. Thanks to the, at the time, radical philosophy of Gene Roddenberry, the show attracted a large audience. The adventurous and utopian society made many people hope for a future where prejudice was a thing of the past, and anyone could boldly go where no man has gone before. After making such a lasting stamp on society, I am interested in learning how the Star Trek series allowed viewers to learn and accept the truth of uncomfortable social and personal matters within our society. In the 1960 s, the Civil Rights Movement in the United States had finally gained ground and much progress had been made. However, segregation was still very prevalent in society. In an era when racism was extensive, Star Trek featured a racially diverse crew; this included Lieutenant Uhura, an African American woman in charge of Communications and Lieutenant Sulu an Asian helmsman. This revolutionary decision practically guaranteed that Star Trek would have a long lasting impression on viewers. The male stereotypes, such as the Nobel Savage, are widely known in literature. American Indian women have also fallen victim to their own set of stereotypes. Two common labels regarding American Indian women are Squaws, and Nobel Maidens. European Americans have done their best to pigeonhole American Indians into these stereotypes, however, American Indian women are more complex than that. History dictates that these women had many roles in their respective tribes to include prominent positions. Since Europeans first arrived in the Americas in the late 1400s, they viewed American Indian relationships through their own cultural biases. Women were observed working alongside men, each contributing to the good of the tribe. Through the lens of cultural bias, Europeans immediately labeled these women as slaves, who were no better than animals. The early settlers failed to recognize that women were seen as equal to their male counterparts. Each sex had their own set of tasks, but all tasks were valued without one out weighing another (Lajimodiere, 2013). The slave stereotype continued to be perpetuated for centuries and became synonymous with the term Squaw. This view is based on the assumption that legal doctrines are only justified if they are morally justified. Below, follows an appraisal of the various justifications of this assertion and a defence of Raz s position on the autonomy of legal reasoning. • 28. Health And Wellness Is Sleep Disorders The topic that comes to mind when I think about health and wellness is sleep disorders. This is because my mom struggled with a sleep disorder called narcolepsy for some time. The matter that I would specify as my research problem is: How living with narcolepsy affects quality of life . This is a precise subject that outlines an area of interest to me that I would like to learn more about. My original idea was sleep disorders, and I narrowed it down to a specific disorder. After that, I made it even more precise by pinpointing a specific idea in regards to this topic. I would begin searching for sources for this research topic on the Herzing University website in the library section. This library has several reliable databases that can be used to search for foundations of information. Several of these databases include health , medical , or wellness right in the title. It would be wise to use these databases to search for information about this specific topic rather than a more general database because the more precise databases will usually give more accurate results. It is important to remember what make a source great, and what makes a source not reliable at all. A technological subject that interests me is television use in young children. My reasons behind this opinion are single sex schooling has less distraction in class, single sex schools have better learning results and lastly boys and girls in a same sex environment are more likely to pursue subjects they usually would not try. Single sex schools have less distractions in class. I believe this because in a single sex environment boys do not feel the need to impress girls and girls would not have to downplay their strengths to impress boys. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A second example to help argue my point is when United Kingdom educator Graham Able compared student performance in 30 single sex and co educational schools, he found the academic advantage of single sex schooling even greater for boys. This evidence shows that single sex is the better school option for learning and getter better academic results, especially if your child is a boy. Single sex schooling is the better choice when selecting your child s future school specially when you are looking for the best possible education. In single sex schools boys and girls excel in subjects they usually would not. Single sex schools help children do well in subjects they usually would not be good at or subjects they would not usually try. For example girls do better at maths and science in all girl schools; boys do better in languages and the arts in all boy schools. My first example to backup my point is a study by Cambridge University in 2006 where their research showed boys improved in english and foreign languages in single sex classes, and girls improved in maths and physics. This proves girls and boys do better in subjects they usually would not do because they are more comfortable in a single sex school rather than a co educational school. • 30. Essay about Three Main Environments of Northanger Abbey There are three main environments in which the novel, Northanger Abbey, is set. The initial location is Fullerton and it is from here Catherine begins her journey. This is also the place to which Catherine returns at the end of the narrative. By the very fact that Fullerton is located at the start and the end of Catherine s journey, it can be used as a comparison with the other locations in the novel. Catherine wants to leave Fullerton, as it is not exciting enough and certainly not as glamorous a place as the second location, Bath. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On arriving in Bath, it is strange that although Bath is such a thriving town of social activity, she fails to make new acquaintances or renew any old ones. It is here that Catherine meets Henry Tilney and the Thorpe family. Bath lacks the stability of Fullerton and it is this insincerity that enables Bath to be seen as a place where it is easy to practise deceit. Bath is full of new acquaintances and thus easy to befriend and utilise people to assist in any schemes and to fall back upon, if caught. It is here that Isabella deceives the trusting Catherine for longer than would be possible in a close nit environment like Fullerton. In contrast to Isabella, Catherine s new friend, Henry Tilney, is aware of the falseness of Bath. He puts up with the shallow entertainment in the hope he finds a worthy friend there, as happens on meeting Catherine. Indeed, while dancing with Catherine, he convey his amusement that many visitors to Bath come to dislike the place, but prolong their stay only to leave when money runs out, thus presenting a damaging fascination with Bath. He thinks that Bath has little variety and that Catherine should be tired of it at the end of six weeks . • 31. Tsa Should Use Full Body Scanners After the devastating terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11th, TSA (Transportation Security Administration) was created and have since then beefed up their security. Because of all the new security devices and rules taking place now, the wait time at in the security line is longer, but for a good reason. On an average day, TSA screens 1.1 million bags. Of those 1.1 million bags, around 50,000 of them have to be checked thoroughly due to suspicious items inside the bags. The wait time at airport security lines has increased because of new threats. Because of an increase in the wait time at the security line, some people find it very frustrating and think that all the precautions are unnecessary. Those people are wrong though. In the past years since TSA was created, multiple bomber attacks have been attempted but have yet to succeed due to TSA keeping up with its safety requirements. In 2010, TSA started to use full body scanners. Some people are uncomfortable with the idea that when going through the body scanners, they are almost viewed completely naked and worry that those photos will be leaked. In Emily Holbrook s article, Airport Security: privacy vs. safety, she makes an interesting pint when it comes to body scanners by quoting Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who said, you don t need to look at my wife and 8 year old daughter naked in order to secure that airplane (quoted in QTD. Holbrook 14). Police Use Of Force Essay Officers are trained to use certain measures to prevent an incident from escalating to brutal or deadly force and due to the environment of most minority communities, officers frequently have to resort to use of force. This news would astonish most because the general public has been told that ethanol is beneficial for the United States, due to it being a renewable resource, however, that is not true. When one thinks of the qualities of a renewable resource, they think of it being beneficial to the environment, having a positive energy balance, not requiring subsidies, mandates, and tariffs to function, and should not raise the price of its main input. Most renewable resources meet these goals, corn ethanol, however, does not meet any of these goals. It is safe to call ethanol a false economy because it does not have any ... The ethanol production process starts with growing corn, on average an acre of corn yields close to 7,110 pounds of corn that require 140 gallons of fossil fuels to grow through the use of liquid fertilizer and powering machinery (Ethanol Fuel from Corn par. 4). The corn is harvested and transported to an ethanol refinery where it is ground, then water is added to create a mash in which enzymes break down the corn into sugar, afterward the sugar is mixed with yeast and fermented to produce ethanol (Ethanol Fuel: is ethanol par. 9 10). During the process of growing and processing the corn needed to manufacture one gallon of ethanol, it requires 131,000 British Thermal Units (BTU) to generate a gallon of ethanol while a gallon of ethanol produces only 77,000 BTU (Ethanol Fuel from Corn par. 5). The net ratio of energy for ethanol production is undesirable because ethanol has barely over half of the total energy needed to produce ethanol. Other materials can produce ethanol, such as switch grass or wood biomass, however, their energy returns are just as atrocious, needing forty five percent and fifty seven percent more energy to produce ethanol than it provides, respectively (Lang par. 5). Through employing a Marxist view of history there are always the haves and the have nots one can see that Life in the Iron Mills exemplifies the struggles that face many have not citizens throughout history. One can then see the clear connections to various authors such as Mary Wollstonecraft, W.E.B. DuBois, Karl Marx and Freidrich Engels, and Adam Smith. Life in the Iron Mills is a tragic yet poignant story of the effects of a man s socioeconomic status. Although set in the nineteenth century, the story is all too familiar. The short story begins with a reflective narrator begging the audience to read the story with an open mind not tainted by the ideals of high society (Davis). The narrator suggests the story be read from the perspective of the protagonist, Hugh Wolfe, a lowly puddler at the iron mill (Davis). Hugh works long, hard hours at the mill for little to no pay in attempts to provide not only for himself but also for his cousin, Deborah, and a young girl, Janey (Davis). • 38. Happiness Is The Best Thing Essay For Aristotle, happiness is the best thing, for it is a thing for and in itself. Happiness is derived from ethics, and ethics is answer to how you achieve happiness. Virtue is a means in which ethics are preformed and are derived from passions and actions. That is, passions and actions are means in which ethical virtue is performed in order to gain happiness. Aristotle believes that for anything to be known it must derive from four causes. From these causes we understand what ethics is and its relation to the soul, virtue and how these are used to obtain happiness. Though happiness is the final goal it still must be journeyed through introspective and active movements by the self. The four causes are a means to argue a philosophical question. They include efficient causes; the source of movement that will be understood as the why or by which. Material cause is concerned with the out of which and formal cause deals with form or shape and is understood as the into which or what was being. The purpose of these causes is to come to a conclusion, the final cause, or rather an end or goal; the desire that the original philosophical question is concerned with and it is understood as for the sake of which. It is by these four causes we can understand what ethics deals with and how we understand it s purpose. Ethics is concerned with what is the good life for me, and the final cause will be happiness. Salvador Late or Early includes figurative language all throughout the short story. For example, Salvador with eyes the color of caterpillar, (Paragraph 1, Line 1) is a metaphor suggesting metamorphosis and even though he is a caterpillar stuck inside its cocoon, he will soon become a beautiful, graceful butterfly. This metaphor gives rise to the artistic voice and thematic meaning because the message this short story is trying to send is that no matter how worthless one may feel and if they think that they ll never have enough power to hatch out of their cocoon, in the end, they will always become the beautiful, graceful butterfly they were all along.
