A greenhouse is a framed structure covered with transparent or translucent material where crops can be grown in a partially controlled environment. There are several types of greenhouses including lean-to, even-span, gothic arch, quonset, and ridge-and-furrow greenhouses. Key factors in greenhouse site selection include soil pH, water availability, elevation, pollution, and transportation access. Greenhouse orientation is also important, with single-span oriented east-west and multi-span oriented north-south. Net houses and polytunnels allow for partially controlled growing conditions year-round.
