The document discusses the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) of teaching foreign languages. Some key points:
- GTM was first used in the 15th century to teach Latin and Greek. It focuses on reading comprehension, translation skills, and developing reading and writing abilities.
- Grammar rules are emphasized and taught deductively. Accuracy and memorization are stressed. Students translate between their native language and the target language.
- Little attention is given to speaking skills or pronunciation. The teacher's role is authority-based and interaction is mostly one-way. Errors are immediately corrected.
- Techniques include translation, reading comprehension questions, grammar exercises, and memorization. Advantages include ease of use and assessment
THIS IS A METHOD OF APPLIED LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODS. IT HAS BOTH MANY ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES. WE WORKED ON HARDLY WITH MY GROUP. HOPE IT WILL BE USEFUL FOR EVERYONE.
Among all the methods and approaches to language teaching there is one that may not have a strong basis on its Theory of Language but an excellent background on its Theory of Learning, the Natural Approach, based on the principles of the Theory of Language Acquisition proposed by Stephen Krashen.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

4. Brief history of GTM
It was first used in 15th century for teaching the
classical languages, Latin and Greek. It was also
named as Classical Method.
Earlier in 20th century, this method was used for
helping students read and appreciate foreign language
literature.
5. Objectives
Students will be able to read literature written in the target (English) language
Students will be able to translate from one language to another
To help students to develop reading and writing skill
To help students read and appreciate foreign language literature
12. 6.Deductive method
In this method grammar is taught through a deductive method.
Rules are presented, and learners are given a chance to study
and practice the rules and the practices dependents more on
translation exercises.
13. 7.Role of mother tongue
Mother tongue of the learner is used as a medium of
instruction and it is used to explain new items and to
enable comparisons to be made between foreign
language and the students’ native language.
14. 8.Least attention on pronunciation.
In grammar translation method little importance is
given to the pronunciation because their major goal is
to read and write in the target language.
15. 9.Role of teacher in GTM
Teacher is authority in the classroom. The students do as teacher
says so they can learn what he knows. The teacher’s role is very
traditional as he explains, translates, conducts practice and corrects
mistakes of the students
16. 10.Role of student
The role of the learners is very passive. They memories
vocabulary of foreign language, grammar rules and learn
to translation.
17. 11.Nature of student-teacher interaction
Most of the interaction occur between learners to teacher and they
least talk with each other.
18. 12.Teacher’s response to student error
Errors are corrected immediately by the teacher. The major
emphasis is on correction and errors are considered as
unnecessary and sign of failure.
22. • This method is useful in the class in which there are a large no of students.
• It is an easy method to teach foreign language. It is method through which the
learner proceeds from known to unknown language.
• Translation method helps in the rapid extension of vocabulary of the students as it
avoids difficult and lengthy explanations.
23. • It helps teacher to clear the meaning of a word and sentence easily by
translating it in to the mother tongue.
• It does not consume time in finishing the syllabus.
• It saves teacher’s labor. He does not require different audio visual aids to
explain words meaning.
24. • It is beneficial to use in the class where there are students have mix ability to
learn.
• Students’ comprehension is very easily assessed through grammar translation
method.
• Grammar of the foreign language is easily taught by comparing it with the
grammar of the mother tongue
26. 1.No oral work takes place in the class room due to this method.
2. The focus remains only on the mother-tongue and the target language remains
ignored.
27. 3.The students do not develop the power of thinking in the target language.
4. It does not help the students to learn correct pronunciation of English
language or the target language.
