The Negative Effects Of Media In The Media
In today s modern social and public media children can come across many different forms of
unwanted profanity and bad practices. As this becomes more and more prevalent children are slowly
becoming more and more accustomed to hearing and seeing profane things. Children are being
impacted in a negative way when crossing negative and profane media. This media can lead to
children developing a sense of fear, lack of respect towards their piers and others around them, and a
desensitizing of emotions and thoughts. These days its pretty hard not to come across content in media
that can be offensive and or profane. This is partly due to the fact that movie and media rating
companies are becoming more and more lenient with what content is considered non profane and what
is. For example, Kimberly M. Thompson and Fumie Yokota found in their research of the correlation
between movie rating and profanity and violence saying, The MPAA mentioned alcohol or drugs in its
rating reason for 18% of films, while Screen It! assigned a score above none for tobacco and/or
alcohol/drugs for 95% of films and above none for alcohol/drugs for 93%... This shows that more and
more movies and shows are staring to include this profane content and are still being classified as PG
or PG 13. Another study referenced in Chandra Johnson s article about Kids and swear words: Can
profanity in media hurt? referenced a study by VidAngle saying, from the first swear word on film
(1939 s Gone with the Wind ) to 2013 s The Wolf of Wall Street, which holds the record with 798
swearwords an increase of 500 percent over 74 years.... This shows that swear words and profanity are
being included more and more in movies and media. We instead need to include versions of movies
that are censored and child family friendly. Having this decrease in profanity standards means that
children are going to be exposed to profanity at a much faster rate. This will increase the rate at which
children are affected and can lead to the negative affects listed above.
Having children become fearful, disrespectful, and desensitized when it comes to emotion will lead to
social and economic issues later down in their lives. For example, Rupal Patel (a child

The Deaf Boy By Mark Drolsbaugh Essay
Mark Drolsbaugh spent the better part of his childhood trapped in between two worlds, neither of
which he felt at ease. Transitioning from hearing to deaf and everything it involves, Mr. Drolsbaugh
has certainly seen it all. Deaf Again focuses predominantly on the story of a deaf boy, attempting to
conform to the lifestyle that was comfortable for everyone else surrounding him; to a shameless,
culturally Deaf man sharing his experiences and viewpoints with the nation. Drolsbaugh discusses
heavy topics such as education, acceptance, awareness, and self perseverance. He goes on to give his
opinions and ideas on cochlear implants, how to raise a deaf child, and fusing the two communities
(Deaf and hearing).
Learning a new language can be hard, especially when it is not the language spoken by the majority of
your friends and family. But, being raised by deaf parents with many hearing influences, what is that
like? Drolsbaugh talks about the struggles he faced throughout primary school and how always being
the only deaf boy in the room made him feel like an elephant, no less. I m sure anyone would feel that
way if they were challenged to follow a conversation without their ears. Although he was hard of
hearing for some time, the residual hearing that was left allowed Drolsbaugh to play the fake it till you
make it game. But, that did not always work, especially when a teacher asks you your name and you
reply with a smug I don t know . During adolescence, his hearing

A Short Note On Lymphoma And Non Hodgkin Lymphoma
Clinically, Lymphoma is split up into two categories. These two categories are Hodgkin s Lymphoma
and Non Hodgkin s Lymphoma. Hodgkin s Lymphoma is quite distinct from Non Hodgkin s
Lymphoma. Hodgkin s Lymphoma has been named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who was the first to
recognize it. This is a cancer developed from white blood cells in the lymphatic system known as
lymphocytes (Cancer Center). All other forms are put in the Non Hodgkin s Lymphoma category. The
lymphatic system is there to help fight infection and disease. The lymphatic tissues make up a major
portion of the lymphatic system which is why Hodgkin s Lymphoma can start almost anywhere in the
body. From here it can easily grow to other tissues or most commonly, the lymph nodes. The type of
cells involved and how spread the growth is upon diagnosis classifies lymphomas. The true cause of
Hodgkin s Lymphoma has remained unclear. Doctors do know that when this form of lymphoma
occurs that B cells have formed a mutation in the cells DNA, which relays the message to the cell to
divide rapidly and live instead of dying like a normal cell would.
All age groups can be affected by the types of Hodgkin s Lymphoma, which include four classical
forms and one non classical form. Nodular sclerosis Hodgkin s disease, mixed cellularity Hodgkin s
disease, lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin s disease, and lymphocyte depletion Hodgkin s disease
are the four classical forms. Nodular sclerosis is the most common form

Analysis Of Like Water For Chocolate By Laura Esquivel
In Laura Esquivel s novel Like Water for Chocolate , she skillfully illustrates that love is a powerful
that can either make or break us. The author portrays this conflict through The use of descriptive
metaphors and indirect symbolism. As Esquivel describes the inner emotions of Tita; the main
protagonist, through the use of descriptive metaphors she asserts that The anger she felt within her
acted like yeast on bread dough. She felt it s rapid rising flowing into every last recess of her body;
like yeast in a small bowl, it spilled over to the outside, escaping in the form of steam through her
ears, nose, and all her pores (Esquivel 149). Her use of metaphors enable the reader to visualize Tita s
anger and frustration by relating them to food items. The way Esquivel is very descriptive when
expressing the emotions of Tita convey the mood of resentment; because of the all too familiar feeling
of loving someone who you can not be with. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whenever the love of her life; Pedro, moves away she is left feeling demoralized and has given up
hope on being with her true love. Since then Tita had lost all interest in life, except for her interest in
feeding worms to a helpless pigeon (Esquivel 87). Later in the chapter whenever Tita refuses to obey
her mother s rules, she get physically abused and seeks shelter from her mother in the dovecote where
the narrator states, Chencha found Tita holding the pigeon. She didn t seem to realize it was dead. She
was trying to feed it some more worms. The poor thing probably died of indigestion because Tita fed
it to much ( Esquivel 100). The pigeon is an indirect symbol of Tita s desire to feel loved and to also
give love. Her actions of feeding the pigeon emphasize her need to feel loved. Her desire to feel loved

Figure 4 Fischer Esterification Mechanism (Gunawardena, 2009) Practically, the procedure involves
the heating a mixture of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst to yield an
ester and water as end product. The reaction is reversible and the position of equilibrium depends on
the reaction conditions. An excess of the alcohol favor the formation of the ester. While the presence
of water drives the reaction backwards. (John McMurry, 2007) This concept of driving thereaction

change in temperature, pressure, or concentration of reacting species, the system responds by attaining
a new equilibrium that partially offsets the impact of change. (Petrucci, 2010) The structure of the

External Beauty In Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye
A common misconception that only external looks dictate beauty has toggled with the minds of
millions of people. In today s era, social media has become a huge aspect of defining beauty. As
twenty first century social media might suggest, beautiful girls tend to be skinny, tan, long legged, and
white teethed. People begin to idolize these figures that they see on social media, and they
characterize beauty by these standards, even though it is fruitless to do so. This is also true in The
Bluest Eye as most all people in Lorain, Ohio in the 1940 s glorified white skin, blue eyes, and blonde
hair. People revered public figures like Shirley Temple, and conceived those without the
aforementioned attributes as ugly. Toni Morrison organizes the The Bluest Eye into seasonal chapters,
shifts to different perspectives throughout the novel, and includes the Dick and Jane epigraph to
illustrate the trivial ideal of external beauty that often dominates life. Morrison deliberately divides the
novel into seasons to foil the optimal expectations of those seasons and the bitter reality. On the
surface, new seasons represent new standards. For example, readers presume autumn to be a time of
harvest and preservation; however, in The Bluest Eye, autumn represents a time of destruction and
death. In autumn, Cholly and Mrs. Breedlove fought each other with a darkly brutal formalism
(Morrison 41), and their relationship continued in a downward spiral as Mrs. Breedlove beat Cholly

Chinese Philosophy From The Spring And Autumn And Warring...
Chinese philosophy originates in the Spring and Autumn and Warring States eras. This was during the
period known as Hundred Schools of Thought. Regional rulers of the Spring and Autumn period
enhanced their ability to obtain natural resources, to recruit men for their armies, and to oversee
conquered areas. (pg. 165) Researchers started to help the rulers and because of that, the rulers began
perceiving the researchers comprehension of punishment, ritual, astronomy, medicine, and divination.
There were a few distinct methods of insight that emerged in Ancient China amid this time period. Be
that as it may, there were three noteworthy methods of insight that were absolutely critical: legalism,
taoism and confucianism. Confucius was a researcher who served in government positions. He
realized that the legislature was doing as well as could be expected, on the other hand, he likewise
realized that war was among them. Consequently, Confucius was resolved to locate an illuminated
ruler. He had confidence in family and that family was the establishment of a moral society. Confucius
set up any of the real rules for Chinese thought and activity: regard for the declarations of researchers,
duty to expansive instruction, and preparing for all who were exceedingly astute and willing to work.
(pg. 164) Due to Confucius being solid willed, he put forward new ethics focusing on ceremonies,
obligation and dedication to family and the ideal of good character. Confucianism was

Birth Control Effects
Effects of Birth Control 11 million women are currently taking birth control orally in the U.S. Studies
have shown that 99% of the time birth control helps by preventing any type of unwanted pregnancies.
Although, many are unaware of the mental and physical health effects that birth control could have on
them.
How Birth Control Works During the beginning of each menstrual cycle, the estrogen levels in the
women s body starts to increase. Estrogen is hormone ,where once released into the female body it
begins to thicken the lining of the uterus in preparation of fertilizing an egg. When the estrogen levels
higher even more, the ovaries release an egg. This process is well known as ovulation. After this, the
progesterone levels rise. Progesterone is a hormone that thickens the lining of the uterus to prepare for
the fertilizing of the egg. During this process, the egg is traveling through the fallopian tubes, trying to
get to the uterus. When the egg is fully fertilized and it implants itself within the uterus the pregnancy
process begins. If the egg doesn t successfully fertilize or it doesn t attach itself accurately to the
uterus, then, there is no chance of pregnancy. As a result, the estrogen and progesterone hormone
levels start to decrease and the thickened uterus lining starts to shed. Birth control is a synthetic type
of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Birth control works because it prevents the whole
ovulation process. With

Analysis Of An Inspector Calls By Mendoza Okara...
It is fair to say that, Mendoza utilises Onofre Bouvila as a character to be portrayed as a direct parallel
to the development and aspirations of Barcelona. This is expressed in the novel, since; it is irrelevant
how rich and powerful Onofre becomes, he will never be accepted by the social elite. This is due to
the fact that, he can never be on the top rung of the social ladder literally and figuratively, due to his
impoverished upbringing and working class background. corrió hacia la mesa presidencial... Al llegar

table with the Russian aristocrat because he does not have a noble lineage 4 (Karen Oswald pg. 54).
This shows us that in this scene, Onofre aspires to sit on the top table with the Czarina. Nevertheless,
even though he is incredibly powerful and considered to be the richest man in Spain, due to his
deprived childhood and lower class background, he will never be able to sit on that top table.
Consequently, Onofre will never reach the upper echelons of Barcelona s social elite. Therefore, it
could be argued that Onofre is a metaphor for Barcelona given the fact that,

The Jewish Community in Italy Essay
The Jewish Community in Italy
Problems with format
For centuries, there has been a Jewish community in parts of present day Italy, dating back to the
Roman Empire. In addition to religious differences, Jews were faced with political challenges as well.
The Emperor was included in the pantheon of Roman tradition, which added a political obligation to
religious, and thus Roman citizens were required to ?conciliate the gods.? For Jews, this requirement
created many consequences.[1] According to estimates, there were five to seven million Jews in the
Roman Empire during this time. The relations between the Jews and the Romans have always been
complicated. For in 186 B.C. measures were taken against the Bacchanalia, but in 161 B.C., a ... Show

In addition to those geographically in Italy, many Jews were subject to Roman rule. After the
tyrannical emperor Nero committed suicide and violent civil war, Vespasian, of the Flavian dynasty,
gained control. In Judea, Roman rule seemingly contradicted the common Jewish religious nationalist
sentiments, but Roman rulers established various privileges for those with Hebraic religious beliefs.
Jews, throughout the Empire, were not required to engage in emperor worship, since it was directly
contrary to their monotheistic beliefs. Yet, the Jews and the Romans did clash on various issues; one
example took place during the reign of Caligula, when he ?ordered that a golden statue of himself be
placed in Jerusalem?s temple.?[5] After the Jews firmly resisted, Caligula rescinded his order.
?In 66 A.D., as a result of the encouragement of militant Jews, the Jewish community initiated a war
of liberation. A five month siege during 70 A.D., by the Romans, significantly hurt the Jews, and soon
after, the Romans captured and destroyed the Jerusalem temple.? Then, the Romans transported
approximately ten thousand Jews to Rome in order to build the Coliseum.? There was another Hebrew
revolt in Judea under the rule of Hadrian, but the Romans were victorious again.? Most Palestinian

Rfid ( Radio Frequency Identification )
INTRODUCTION
RFID (radio frequency identification) is a technology that was originally developed for use in
transponders in aircrafts during the Second World War. RFID is an information and sensor technology
that can be attached or inserted into objects to collect data through reader devices and tags. It uses
wireless radio waves to transmit and uses devices such as RFID readers, RFID tags, and middleware.
The RFID system consists of three components
1. The transponder, which is a small electronic data carrying tag that is attached to the product to be
identified.
2. A reader that uses radio frequency signals to communicate with the tag
3. A data processing system that stores information about the tagged products.

RFID IN WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT
In the last decade RFID has gained popularity in the logistics and supply chain management fields.
Many warehouses are taking into consideration the adoption of RFID to reduce the operating cost
against the requirement to build an automatic warehouse and labour intensive manual checking. For
warehousing the parameters include communication range, amount of transmittable data,
communication time and speed of tag communication. The communication range is the distance
within which the reader can transmit or receive data to the tag. Beyond this range the items become
undetectable. The amount of data that is transmitted between the tag and reader affects the
performance in terms of transmission time and accuracy. The communication time also impacts the
performance of the RFID system. There is a choke point which is the fixed reader and the RFID is
constrained to a maximum travel velocity when passing the fixed reader location. When travelling
beyond this speed the accuracy to read is very close to zero. So when greater volume of data is passing
the tag will have to essentially pass the reader more slowly for an accurate read, especially in
warehouses.
In a warehouse four activities generally occur. In the first activity the receiving dock receives the
shipments that arrive at from the factory. With the

Problems Dealing With Liberty And Social Order
Problems Dealing with Liberty and Social Order
The Declaration of Independence, the most significant statement of natural rights and liberty ever
made, accompanied the birth of the United States as a nation. Ever since the Declaration of
Independence was instituted, American leaders have worked overtime to ensure that the citizens of the
US enjoy their freedoms and rights. In fact, United States falls under the category of one of the freest
nations in the world, in consideration of the huge population and vast ethnic and racial ties in the
nation. The United States has also tried to offer a helping hand to nations that have traded their
freedoms for the promise of security and liberty, or unlimited freedom and have achieved neither of
the two promises. However, the biggest fear that lies in the American citizens and leaders is how the
nation can effectively manage security, civil liberties, and social order. In this paper, the discussion
revolves around problems that the United States and other nations face dealing with liberty and social
order.
Liberty refers to the state of an individual being free and not conforming to the oppressive restrictions
placed by the authorities that seek to demand one s behavior, their way of life, and political views. In
simpler terms, liberty refers to the power an individual has to act as they please. Social order, on the
other hand, refers to a set of social structures, customs, relations, institutions, and values meant at

Outliers Malcolm Gladwell Essay
I place my beautiful Howarth XL gently back in its case. In the lights it shines brightly, and if the

Or so I am told. I recently read a book called Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. In

Analysis Of Paul s The Letter Of Romans Essay
Romans Project
Chapter 1
Summary:
Paul begins the letter of Romans by introducing himself and stating his mission. Concisely stating the
gospel message, Paul encourages the Roman Christians to bring about the obedience of faith for the
sake of his name (1:5), or for the glory of Jesus Christ. He goes on to write of his desires and
intentions to visit Rome in order to preach the gospel of Christ to the Jews as well as the Gentiles.
Paul continues by explaining his excitement for the gospel as well as the need to live the gospel out in
our lives. Finishing the first chapter, Paul presents the inexcusable idolatry, sinfulness, and evilness of
the ungodly.
Key Verses:
1:16 17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who
believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from
faith for faith, as it is written, The righteous shall live by faith.
Question:
In 1:15, why is Paul eager to preach the gospel to a church that has presumably already received the
gospel?
Answer:
In Romans 1:15, the you could possibly refer to Rome and all of its citizens. While this is a possibility,
Douglas Moo notes that the you in verse 15 more likely refers to the members of the Roman church.
In this case, Paul is referring to the gospel as the ongoing work of teaching and discipleship that builds
on initial evangelism (Moo, p. 63). Therefore, not only is Paul eager to spread the gospel

Essay on Attacks on the US Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania
On August 7, 1998, two U.S. embassies were attacked almost simultaneously. One was in Nairobi,
Kenya and the other in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The attack in Kenya involved both a truck bomb and
at least two suicide bombers. The truck was at the back entrance of the embassy when the bomb went
off, and the damage was critical. This attack had more casualties than the bombing in Tanzania
because the truck that contained the bomb was able to get into the inner embassy compound. Also, the
Nairobi embassy was close to the center of the city which was more populated and led to more deaths.

ambassador that was injured in the bombing. She had been meeting outside with Joseph Kamotho,
Kenya s trade minister. Their first thought from hearing the smaller blast was that it must be the noise
from construction. Another victim, Linda Howard, witnessed the explosion around 10:40 A.M. She
was on the fourth floor of the United States Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya and was in a meeting. Soon
after she heard the small explosion, she suddenly realized that all of the windows were currently being
blasted, the roof was caving in, and smoke seemed to appear from every direction. Before she had
analyzed what was going on, she was being yelled at by Embassy guards to get down on the floor.
After fifteen minutes of crawling around without being able to see, they had reached the ground floor.
What Howard saw next terrified her. She saw lifeless bodies, fires everywhere, and the screams of
terrified people. Bill Bar who is director of the U.S. Information Service in Kenya, was also at the
same meeting as Linda Howard. He also recalls hearing a thump and thought it was possibly the sound
of a grenade being thrown at the embassy. Some also recall hearing gunfire outside of the embassy
before the big explosion. Al Qaeda is the international terrorist group responsible for these two
attacks. The mastermind behind the attacks was named Fazul Abdullah Mohammed. He was recruited
by Osama Bin Laden who was a Saudi millionaire. Osama was the leader that funded and supported

Sleepless In Seattle Plot Analysis
Theme The theme of a movie is an idea, issue, or concept that a writer wants to express through a
story; a message or meaning that the audience is meant to take away from a movie. (Goodykoontz
Jacobs, 2014) The theme of Sleepless in Seattle is best stated by Tom Hanks in the beginning of the
film, and I ll grow a new heart. (Arch, 1992) Can true love happen for the second time? The theme of
this movie is about answering this question. Will Sam find love again?
Acting Style When you think of acting style in movies, you are looking for how the actors/actresses
represent the characters for the story. Tom Hanks is such a multitalented actor, but in Sleepless in
Seattle, he expertly plays a heartbroken widower and the father of Jonah. Meg Ryan is the ultimate
hopeless romantic and plays her role as Annie to perfection. Bill Pullman is wonderful in his role as a
skilled business professional, who is Annie s fiancé, Walter. Sam is Mr. Sleepless in Seattle. Annie has
overwhelming compassion for Jonah and Sam after hearing their story on the radio station. Maybe
Annie felt sorry for Jonah after hearing him asking for a new wife for his dad, or maybe it was just
magic and fate that made her fall in love with Sam before even meeting him. Walter is calm and
understanding when his engagement to Annie ends because Annie says she just has to meet Sleepless
in Seattle

Do Animals Have Rights...a Philosophical View
Do Animals Have Rights? Should animals be harmed to benefit mankind? This pressing question has
been around for at least the past two centuries. During the early nineteenth century, animal
experiments emerged as an important method of science and, in fact, marked the birth of experimental
physiology and neuroscience as we currently know it. There were, however, guidelines that existed
even back then which restricted the conditions of experimentation. These early rules protected the
animals, in the sense that all procedures performed were done so with as little pain as possible and
solely to investigate new truths. Adopting the animals perspectives, they would probably not agree
that these types of regulations were much ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There are many viewpoints concerning this issue that need to be dealt with in order to fully grasp the
mindset of those so deeply involved in the struggle to determine what, if any, rights that animals
possess. Tom Regan, a professor of philosophy at North Carolina State University and one of the
leading proponents of this theory, claims that animals have rights – the right to be treated in a certain
way. Regan claims that animals have preferences, goals, and most importantly, mental states that enter
into the explanation of their behavior. In his words, animals are subjects of a life just like humans and
each subject of life contains inherent value . What Regan means by this is that by performing
experiments on animals, you are reducing them to mere tools and violating their basic rights. He
justifies his theory by using an example containing the retarded and insane. He says that if these types
of persons are allowed moral rights, despite their inability to think rationally, then all mammals should
have moral rights. Also, he states that discriminating on the basis of species is really fundamentally
just the same moral mistake as discrimination on the basis of race or sex. Discriminating on these
terms is morally irrelevant and fails to accord equal consideration, states Regan. Another theory that is

Economic Chaos And Confusion Following The American...
The combination of economic chaos and confusion following the American Revolution with the
virtually nonexistent economic powers of the federal government under the Articles of Confederation
put US in a very poor economic position upon the arrival of the Constitution (American Pageant 161).
This, however, changed under the Constitution and thus during the administration of Washington as
the federal government could now have a large say in the economics of America. After being put into
office, Washington established a cabinet and assigned Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding
fathers, to be the Secretary of Treasury. Knowing that debt and the growing interest rates were a very
large domestic problem, Hamilton set out to create a plan for a strong economy. He first implemented
tariffs, which are taxes on foreign goods coming into the country, into his plan, hoping that it would
stimulate manufacturing within the country (Chernow 163). Although this did succeed in stimulating
industry within America, it also angered many Americans in the south and west because they did not
manufacture many goods, but were rather mainly consumers and merchants who were those being
taxed the most (Chernow 153).
Another component of Hamilton s plan for economic aid was the federal assumption of state debt,
which caused many mixed sentiments between the states. On one hand, the states that owed a large
sum of money were very happy as they did not need to pay the debt anymore, at least to the

Struggling with grief and loss can lead to a number of serious physical and emotional ailments. In the
article Death from a Broken Heart, Dulce Zamora wrote about experiencing the strain of stress,
emotional overload, and poor self care after a death. The article highlighted the fact that grievers are at
higher risk for health problems. Studies have shown, as the article discussed, that surviving spouses

This project was undertaken with the intention of helping people who lost a loved one and the social
workers, doctors, ministers, and hospice workers who are charged with bringing them physical,
emotional, and spiritual healing. The project was designed to be available in churches, synagogues,
hospitals, hospices, and support groups. This project was developed to help alleviate the grieving s
emotional pain and to suggest ways of how the grieving can pick up the pieces of their lives.
Assumptions of the Study
Through a Qualitative Research Study on grief and loss, if people are able to identify what stages of
grief they are in, and once that realization is made consciously through psychological and spiritual
counseling, then sufferers will begin the path to healing. The study focused on African Americans who
lost one or more parent. The study excluded people younger than twenty years of age and older than
forty years of age.

How Did Napoleonic War Impact British Society
In his text A mad, bad, and dangerous people Boyd Hilton documents how the wars with Napoleonic
France impacted British society. He argues that Britain went to all out war with France when it
became apparent that Napoleon and Tsar Alexander of Russia formed an alliance at Tilsit and that this
force combined had the potential to overpower European nations such as Denmark, Sweden, and
Portugal and thus without intervention would become much more powerful than they already were by
1807. Hilton argues that there was no alternative Britain had to go to war with France or else the
Danish navy would be under Napoleon s control. In order to prevent this from happening, Britain
launched a military naval expedition to the Baltic sea and bombarded ... Show more content on

The British army also developed significantly from its state in 1793 mainly due to their successes
against Napoleon in Europe and their focus on deploying troops across the continent rather than
having thousands of soldiers for national defence as Boyd Hilton argues the diminished fear of
invasion made it possible to reduce the home guard, and so Castlereagh was able to transfer 27,000
militiamen to the regular Army as well as raising 12,000 normal recruits. The training of British
soldiers was much more crucial to their development, disciplines were tougher but fairer, and
promotions were introduced in all infantry and cavalry positions and lower class men could now make
careers as military officers depending on their success, It was largely due to these changes that the
Army moved from the margins of society to something approaching respectability. The highly
esteemed British Royal Navy suffered great embarrassment during the War of 1812 against the United

Analyzing Dijkstra s Letter Essay
Critically Analyzing Dijkstra s Go To Statement Considered Harmful Recognizing the argument,
determining the types of reasoning used, and identifying logical fallacies are important aspects to
critically analyzing information. The paragraphs that follow provide a critical analysis of Edsger
Dijkstra s famous letter, Go To Statement Considered Harmful .
Critical Analysis
Recognizing the Argument In 1968, Edsger Dijkstra wrote a letter to the editor of Journal of the ACM
entitled Go To Statement Considered Harmful . In his letter, he insisted that the future of programming
would require a structural approach. Prior to this time, programmer s use of the go to statement was
conventional. Dijkstra argued that the usage of the go to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He argued that if he were to stop a program at an arbitrary place in time that it was of the utmost
importance for the programmer to know exactly how his program reached that point and that it is
duplicable. When an unstructured go to statement is used, it can allow the execution of the program to
withdraw prematurely from a loop before it finishes completing. It also, can allow the program to
arbitrarily jump into a loop that has already initiated the process of iterating, thus causing the
programmer to have difficulty identifying a definitive answer to what the variables actually represent
at that specific time (Tribble, 2005). Dijkstra described, The unbridled use of the go to statement has
an immediate consequence that it becomes terribly hard to find a meaningful set of coordinates in
which to describe the process progress (Dijkstra, 1968, p.147). Due to his discoveries, Dijkstra argued,
The go to statement as it stands is just too primitive; it is too much an invitation to make a mess of one
s program (Dijkstra, 1968, p.147).
Determining Types of Reasoning Dijkstra used inductive reasoning as a way to present his arguments
against the go to statement. Inductive reasoning is an argument in which the premises claim to support
the conclusion in such a way that, if the premises are assumed to be true, then (based on that
assumption) it is probable that the conclusion is true (Herms, 1984). Dijkstra began his letter by
declaring that the go to statement

Organized labor began to rise as the business tycoons and big business owners, ...took advantage of
this lawless environment to build fortunes, destroy reputations, exploit both workers and the

The U.S. patents office, which had recorded only 276 inventions during the 1790 s, registered almost

Morley Callaghan Symbols
Books are the foundation of diverse characters and themes, though are often overlooked; a reader
finds intrigue by the story rather than the meaning written between the lines of the written text. The
author works feverishly to bring these ideas forward through the variety of literary devices, however
the hard work put into the novel does not necessarily achieve recognition. The Loved and the Lost by
Morley Callaghan contains effective use of literary devices to develop the characters morals, and their
position in society concerning social status and societal isolation. The techniques that author skillfully
uses include flashback, dialogue and symbolism. Flashback works to characterize and shape each
character, while dialogue creates interactions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Callaghan excels in using symbolism with his knowledge on both society and the understanding of
what the images represent. Symbols work to break down a character and present their opinions on
society to gain a better understanding of what the individual believes in. Peggy Sanderson is an
advocate for change in the treatment of black culture and is constantly showing her respect for the
group that others oppress. A symbol that best describes Peggy s opinion is the river, which flows
around the city of Montreal. It was those who wanted a change who preferred the broad flowing river
(Callaghan 1), perfectly describing Peggy through the use of symbolism in nature. Peggy wants to see
change in the world and her strive for change is like a river that is constantly flowing. Water in a river
never stops and fresh water replaces it as it flows. Peggy never stops respecting the African American
culture and will always speak her mind on the subject, despite what others believe. Similar to the river,
the mountain is also an important piece of symbolism in the text. Symbolism creates a representation
of the societal mindset and the ways by which a society works. Segregation in the text is more than
common and the isolation between groups is prominent. In Callaghan s work, the white culture is
racist and oppresses the black culture, remaining stuck in their oppressive ways. The belief that their
ways should not change describes Catherine Carver, a young woman who has a divorce and engages
in a romantic relationship with McAlpine. Catherine is the daughter of Mr. Carver, an aristocrat who is
very set in his ways and does not believe in change, which he passes down to his daughter. In contrast
to the river, the mountain represents Catherine and the overall white culture at the time. A mountain is
firm and never moves nor does it change, which is why those who wanted

Women and Sports Essay
Women and Sports
As it becomes increasingly acceptable for women to be athletic in American culture, a new question
arises: in which sports should women be allowed to participate? From a physiological standpoint, it
has been scientifically proven that female bodies do not differ significantly enough from male bodies
to prevent them from participation in any male sports. This division between male and female sports
clearly stems from age old, socially constructed norms of femininity and masculinity. When women
attempt to challenge these societal molds by participating in sports that are traditionally male, the
intricate web of norms is disrupted. Like many other instances where traditional social constructions
are tinkered with, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Women are expected to be more passive than their male counterparts. When a woman participates in
sport, she challenges many aspects of the gender role that has been defined for her. First, she is taking
time away from her family to do an activity that is outside the home. Second, in sport, she is behaving
in a more aggressive and competitive manner, which contradicts the meek feminine mold to which she
is supposed to adhere. Furthermore, when women compete in public, suddenly the lines begin to blur.
Men no longer have the monopoly over the role of universal breadwinner. Challenging these socially
constructed lines works as a catalyst for social change. All women athletes, both in traditional and non
traditional sports, play a pivotal role in instigating this change.
Female bodies were traditionally expected to be small, slender, soft, and pretty, while male bodies
were supposed to be muscular, large, solid, and handsome. Sports such as gymnastics and figure
skating allow and almost require that women maintain such feminine physical qualities. Athletes
competing in sports such as power lifting and rowing are encouraged to increase muscle mass at a
rapid rate thereby acquiring a physical stature that society deems masculine. Furthermore, while
technique is essential to these sports, there is a significant emphasis on brute strength. Brute strength
contradicts the passive femininity that is expected of women.

An Explication of W.H. Auden quot;Musee Des Beaux Arts quot;
In poetry, the use of allusions is very common. There are briefs, usually indirect references to another
work or to real or historical events or persons, traditionally as a way of connecting those elements as
well as enriching the meaning of the current work through associations with the other. In his poem
Musee des Beaux Arts , W.H. Auden uses allusions as a way of drawing connections between his
poem, Peter Brueghel s painting The Fall of Icarus , the myth, and the humanity indifference toward
one s suffering.
Icarus, the subject of this poem, was a figure from Greek mythology. He was the son of Dedalus, who,
in order to escape from prison in Crete, made two pairs of wings, one for him and one for his son,
Icarus. As Icarus and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the painting, the young Icarus falls out of the sky and is swept away in death s cold embrace while
the ploughman continued plowing. The ploughman did not care about the splashing sound Icarus
made, when he felt into the water. Auden s allusion to the fallen Icarus in Breughel s painting is seen
as a significant event as to make the point of the poem stronger: apathy of human suffering.
Like many other sonnets, Musee des Beaux Arts is divided into two parts. In general, the first lines of
the poem explore the depth of humanities indifference to one another. Auden makes allusion to the old
master painters of the museum of fine art, who were never wrong about suffering. The old masters
understood that people often turned a blind eye to one another s suffering. The Old Masters were
artists of the 18th century whose works, masterpieces of the Renaissance, also are called old masters.
They often painted classical scenes of pagan Greece and Rome as well as scenes of life and death, like
the Fall of Icarus.
About suffering they were never wrong,
The old Masters: how well they understood
Its human position; how it takes place
While someone is eating or opening a window...
How, when the aged are reverently, passionately waiting
For the miraculous birth, there always must be

this position longer than a few weeks which then it was being taken care of by any of the staff or

  • 2. The Negative Effects Of Media In The Media In today s modern social and public media children can come across many different forms of unwanted profanity and bad practices. As this becomes more and more prevalent children are slowly becoming more and more accustomed to hearing and seeing profane things. Children are being impacted in a negative way when crossing negative and profane media. This media can lead to children developing a sense of fear, lack of respect towards their piers and others around them, and a desensitizing of emotions and thoughts. These days its pretty hard not to come across content in media that can be offensive and or profane. This is partly due to the fact that movie and media rating companies are becoming more and more lenient with what content is considered non profane and what is. For example, Kimberly M. Thompson and Fumie Yokota found in their research of the correlation between movie rating and profanity and violence saying, The MPAA mentioned alcohol or drugs in its rating reason for 18% of films, while Screen It! assigned a score above none for tobacco and/or alcohol/drugs for 95% of films and above none for alcohol/drugs for 93%... This shows that more and more movies and shows are staring to include this profane content and are still being classified as PG or PG 13. Another study referenced in Chandra Johnson s article about Kids and swear words: Can profanity in media hurt? referenced a study by VidAngle saying, from the first swear word on film (1939 s Gone with the Wind ) to 2013 s The Wolf of Wall Street, which holds the record with 798 swearwords an increase of 500 percent over 74 years.... This shows that swear words and profanity are being included more and more in movies and media. We instead need to include versions of movies that are censored and child family friendly. Having this decrease in profanity standards means that children are going to be exposed to profanity at a much faster rate. This will increase the rate at which children are affected and can lead to the negative affects listed above. Having children become fearful, disrespectful, and desensitized when it comes to emotion will lead to social and economic issues later down in their lives. For example, Rupal Patel (a child ... • 3. The Deaf Boy By Mark Drolsbaugh Essay Mark Drolsbaugh spent the better part of his childhood trapped in between two worlds, neither of which he felt at ease. Transitioning from hearing to deaf and everything it involves, Mr. Drolsbaugh has certainly seen it all. Deaf Again focuses predominantly on the story of a deaf boy, attempting to conform to the lifestyle that was comfortable for everyone else surrounding him; to a shameless, culturally Deaf man sharing his experiences and viewpoints with the nation. Drolsbaugh discusses heavy topics such as education, acceptance, awareness, and self perseverance. He goes on to give his opinions and ideas on cochlear implants, how to raise a deaf child, and fusing the two communities (Deaf and hearing). Learning a new language can be hard, especially when it is not the language spoken by the majority of your friends and family. But, being raised by deaf parents with many hearing influences, what is that like? Drolsbaugh talks about the struggles he faced throughout primary school and how always being the only deaf boy in the room made him feel like an elephant, no less. I m sure anyone would feel that way if they were challenged to follow a conversation without their ears. Although he was hard of hearing for some time, the residual hearing that was left allowed Drolsbaugh to play the fake it till you make it game. But, that did not always work, especially when a teacher asks you your name and you reply with a smug I don t know . During adolescence, his hearing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. A Short Note On Lymphoma And Non Hodgkin Lymphoma Clinically, Lymphoma is split up into two categories. These two categories are Hodgkin s Lymphoma and Non Hodgkin s Lymphoma. Hodgkin s Lymphoma is quite distinct from Non Hodgkin s Lymphoma. Hodgkin s Lymphoma has been named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who was the first to recognize it. This is a cancer developed from white blood cells in the lymphatic system known as lymphocytes (Cancer Center). All other forms are put in the Non Hodgkin s Lymphoma category. The lymphatic system is there to help fight infection and disease. The lymphatic tissues make up a major portion of the lymphatic system which is why Hodgkin s Lymphoma can start almost anywhere in the body. From here it can easily grow to other tissues or most commonly, the lymph nodes. The type of cells involved and how spread the growth is upon diagnosis classifies lymphomas. The true cause of Hodgkin s Lymphoma has remained unclear. Doctors do know that when this form of lymphoma occurs that B cells have formed a mutation in the cells DNA, which relays the message to the cell to divide rapidly and live instead of dying like a normal cell would. All age groups can be affected by the types of Hodgkin s Lymphoma, which include four classical forms and one non classical form. Nodular sclerosis Hodgkin s disease, mixed cellularity Hodgkin s disease, lymphocyte predominance Hodgkin s disease, and lymphocyte depletion Hodgkin s disease are the four classical forms. Nodular sclerosis is the most common form ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of Like Water For Chocolate By Laura Esquivel In Laura Esquivel s novel Like Water for Chocolate , she skillfully illustrates that love is a powerful that can either make or break us. The author portrays this conflict through The use of descriptive metaphors and indirect symbolism. As Esquivel describes the inner emotions of Tita; the main protagonist, through the use of descriptive metaphors she asserts that The anger she felt within her acted like yeast on bread dough. She felt it s rapid rising flowing into every last recess of her body; like yeast in a small bowl, it spilled over to the outside, escaping in the form of steam through her ears, nose, and all her pores (Esquivel 149). Her use of metaphors enable the reader to visualize Tita s anger and frustration by relating them to food items. The way Esquivel is very descriptive when expressing the emotions of Tita convey the mood of resentment; because of the all too familiar feeling of loving someone who you can not be with. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whenever the love of her life; Pedro, moves away she is left feeling demoralized and has given up hope on being with her true love. Since then Tita had lost all interest in life, except for her interest in feeding worms to a helpless pigeon (Esquivel 87). Later in the chapter whenever Tita refuses to obey her mother s rules, she get physically abused and seeks shelter from her mother in the dovecote where the narrator states, Chencha found Tita holding the pigeon. She didn t seem to realize it was dead. She was trying to feed it some more worms. The poor thing probably died of indigestion because Tita fed it to much ( Esquivel 100). The pigeon is an indirect symbol of Tita s desire to feel loved and to also give love. Her actions of feeding the pigeon emphasize her need to feel loved. Her desire to feel loved sets the tone of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However, the proton that left replenishes that acid catalyst to help repeat the mechanism for other molecules. The general mechanism of Nucleophilic Acyl Substitution could be simplified and shown by Figure 3 and the specific mechanism of the Fischer Esterification reaction that ensues in the experiment is portrayed by figure 4. (John McMurry, 2007) Figure 3 Nucleophylic Acyl Substitution Reaction Mechanism Figure 4 Fischer Esterification Mechanism (Gunawardena, 2009) Practically, the procedure involves the heating a mixture of an alcohol and a carboxylic acid in the presence of an acid catalyst to yield an ester and water as end product. The reaction is reversible and the position of equilibrium depends on the reaction conditions. An excess of the alcohol favor the formation of the ester. While the presence of water drives the reaction backwards. (John McMurry, 2007) This concept of driving thereaction forward makes use of Le Chatelier s principle states that When an equilibrium system is subjected to change in temperature, pressure, or concentration of reacting species, the system responds by attaining a new equilibrium that partially offsets the impact of change. (Petrucci, 2010) The structure of the reagents greatly affects the rate of Esterification. Presence of bulk groups on the alpha carbon or the site of the reaction causes esterification to slow ... • 8. External Beauty In Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye A common misconception that only external looks dictate beauty has toggled with the minds of millions of people. In today s era, social media has become a huge aspect of defining beauty. As twenty first century social media might suggest, beautiful girls tend to be skinny, tan, long legged, and white teethed. People begin to idolize these figures that they see on social media, and they characterize beauty by these standards, even though it is fruitless to do so. This is also true in The Bluest Eye as most all people in Lorain, Ohio in the 1940 s glorified white skin, blue eyes, and blonde hair. People revered public figures like Shirley Temple, and conceived those without the aforementioned attributes as ugly. Toni Morrison organizes the The Bluest Eye into seasonal chapters, shifts to different perspectives throughout the novel, and includes the Dick and Jane epigraph to illustrate the trivial ideal of external beauty that often dominates life. Morrison deliberately divides the novel into seasons to foil the optimal expectations of those seasons and the bitter reality. On the surface, new seasons represent new standards. For example, readers presume autumn to be a time of harvest and preservation; however, in The Bluest Eye, autumn represents a time of destruction and death. In autumn, Cholly and Mrs. Breedlove fought each other with a darkly brutal formalism (Morrison 41), and their relationship continued in a downward spiral as Mrs. Breedlove beat Cholly ... This was during the period known as Hundred Schools of Thought. Regional rulers of the Spring and Autumn period enhanced their ability to obtain natural resources, to recruit men for their armies, and to oversee conquered areas. (pg. 165) Researchers started to help the rulers and because of that, the rulers began perceiving the researchers comprehension of punishment, ritual, astronomy, medicine, and divination. There were a few distinct methods of insight that emerged in Ancient China amid this time period. Be that as it may, there were three noteworthy methods of insight that were absolutely critical: legalism, taoism and confucianism. Confucius was a researcher who served in government positions. He realized that the legislature was doing as well as could be expected, on the other hand, he likewise realized that war was among them. Consequently, Confucius was resolved to locate an illuminated ruler. He had confidence in family and that family was the establishment of a moral society. Confucius set up any of the real rules for Chinese thought and activity: regard for the declarations of researchers, duty to expansive instruction, and preparing for all who were exceedingly astute and willing to work. • 10. Birth Control Effects Effects of Birth Control 11 million women are currently taking birth control orally in the U.S. Studies have shown that 99% of the time birth control helps by preventing any type of unwanted pregnancies. Although, many are unaware of the mental and physical health effects that birth control could have on them. How Birth Control Works During the beginning of each menstrual cycle, the estrogen levels in the women s body starts to increase. Estrogen is hormone ,where once released into the female body it begins to thicken the lining of the uterus in preparation of fertilizing an egg. When the estrogen levels higher even more, the ovaries release an egg. This process is well known as ovulation. After this, the progesterone levels rise. Progesterone is a hormone that thickens the lining of the uterus to prepare for the fertilizing of the egg. During this process, the egg is traveling through the fallopian tubes, trying to get to the uterus. When the egg is fully fertilized and it implants itself within the uterus the pregnancy process begins. If the egg doesn t successfully fertilize or it doesn t attach itself accurately to the uterus, then, there is no chance of pregnancy. As a result, the estrogen and progesterone hormone levels start to decrease and the thickened uterus lining starts to shed. Birth control is a synthetic type of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Birth control works because it prevents the whole ovulation process. With ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is fair to say that, Mendoza utilises Onofre Bouvila as a character to be portrayed as a direct parallel to the development and aspirations of Barcelona. This is expressed in the novel, since; it is irrelevant how rich and powerful Onofre becomes, he will never be accepted by the social elite. This is due to the fact that, he can never be on the top rung of the social ladder literally and figuratively, due to his impoverished upbringing and working class background. corrió hacia la mesa presidencial... These same men who asked for his money do not allow Onofre to sit at the same table with the Russian aristocrat because he does not have a noble lineage 4 (Karen Oswald pg. 54). This shows us that in this scene, Onofre aspires to sit on the top table with the Czarina. Nevertheless, even though he is incredibly powerful and considered to be the richest man in Spain, due to his deprived childhood and lower class background, he will never be able to sit on that top table. The Jewish Community in Italy Essay The Jewish Community in Italy Problems with format For centuries, there has been a Jewish community in parts of present day Italy, dating back to the Roman Empire. In addition to religious differences, Jews were faced with political challenges as well. The Emperor was included in the pantheon of Roman tradition, which added a political obligation to religious, and thus Roman citizens were required to ?conciliate the gods.? For Jews, this requirement created many consequences.[1] According to estimates, there were five to seven million Jews in the Roman Empire during this time. Rfid ( Radio Frequency Identification ) INTRODUCTION RFID (radio frequency identification) is a technology that was originally developed for use in transponders in aircrafts during the Second World War. RFID is an information and sensor technology that can be attached or inserted into objects to collect data through reader devices and tags. It uses wireless radio waves to transmit and uses devices such as RFID readers, RFID tags, and middleware. The RFID system consists of three components 1. RFID has also gained significant foothold in supply chain and manufacturing. RFID IN WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT In the last decade RFID has gained popularity in the logistics and supply chain management fields. Many warehouses are taking into consideration the adoption of RFID to reduce the operating cost against the requirement to build an automatic warehouse and labour intensive manual checking. For warehousing the parameters include communication range, amount of transmittable data, communication time and speed of tag communication. The communication range is the distance within which the reader can transmit or receive data to the tag. Beyond this range the items become undetectable. The amount of data that is transmitted between the tag and reader affects the performance in terms of transmission time and accuracy. The communication time also impacts the performance of the RFID system. There is a choke point which is the fixed reader and the RFID is constrained to a maximum travel velocity when passing the fixed reader location. When travelling beyond this speed the accuracy to read is very close to zero. So when greater volume of data is passing the tag will have to essentially pass the reader more slowly for an accurate read, especially in warehouses. In a warehouse four activities generally occur. In the first activity the receiving dock receives the shipments that arrive at from the factory. With the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In fact, United States falls under the category of one of the freest nations in the world, in consideration of the huge population and vast ethnic and racial ties in the nation. The United States has also tried to offer a helping hand to nations that have traded their freedoms for the promise of security and liberty, or unlimited freedom and have achieved neither of the two promises. However, the biggest fear that lies in the American citizens and leaders is how the nation can effectively manage security, civil liberties, and social order. In this paper, the discussion revolves around problems that the United States and other nations face dealing with liberty and social order. Liberty refers to the state of an individual being free and not conforming to the oppressive restrictions placed by the authorities that seek to demand one s behavior, their way of life, and political views. In simpler terms, liberty refers to the power an individual has to act as they please. Concisely stating the gospel message, Paul encourages the Roman Christians to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name (1:5), or for the glory of Jesus Christ. He goes on to write of his desires and intentions to visit Rome in order to preach the gospel of Christ to the Jews as well as the Gentiles. Paul continues by explaining his excitement for the gospel as well as the need to live the gospel out in our lives. Finishing the first chapter, Paul presents the inexcusable idolatry, sinfulness, and evilness of the ungodly. Key Verses: 1:16 17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, The righteous shall live by faith. Question: In 1:15, why is Paul eager to preach the gospel to a church that has presumably already received the gospel? Answer: In Romans 1:15, the you could possibly refer to Rome and all of its citizens. While this is a possibility, Douglas Moo notes that the you in verse 15 more likely refers to the members of the Roman church. In this case, Paul is referring to the gospel as the ongoing work of teaching and discipleship that builds on initial evangelism (Moo, p. 63). During the early nineteenth century, animal experiments emerged as an important method of science and, in fact, marked the birth of experimental physiology and neuroscience as we currently know it. There were, however, guidelines that existed even back then which restricted the conditions of experimentation. Regan claims that animals have preferences, goals, and most importantly, mental states that enter into the explanation of their behavior. In his words, animals are subjects of a life just like humans and each subject of life contains inherent value . What Regan means by this is that by performing experiments on animals, you are reducing them to mere tools and violating their basic rights. He justifies his theory by using an example containing the retarded and insane. He says that if these types of persons are allowed moral rights, despite their inability to think rationally, then all mammals should have moral rights. The combination of economic chaos and confusion following the American Revolution with the virtually nonexistent economic powers of the federal government under the Articles of Confederation put US in a very poor economic position upon the arrival of the Constitution (American Pageant 161). This, however, changed under the Constitution and thus during the administration of Washington as the federal government could now have a large say in the economics of America. After being put into office, Washington established a cabinet and assigned Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers, to be the Secretary of Treasury. Knowing that debt and the growing interest rates were a very large domestic problem, Hamilton set out to create a plan for a strong economy. He first implemented tariffs, which are taxes on foreign goods coming into the country, into his plan, hoping that it would stimulate manufacturing within the country (Chernow 163). Although this did succeed in stimulating industry within America, it also angered many Americans in the south and west because they did not manufacture many goods, but were rather mainly consumers and merchants who were those being taxed the most (Chernow 153). Another component of Hamilton s plan for economic aid was the federal assumption of state debt, which caused many mixed sentiments between the states. The British army also developed significantly from its state in 1793 mainly due to their successes against Napoleon in Europe and their focus on deploying troops across the continent rather than having thousands of soldiers for national defence as Boyd Hilton argues the diminished fear of invasion made it possible to reduce the home guard, and so Castlereagh was able to transfer 27,000 militiamen to the regular Army as well as raising 12,000 normal recruits. The training of British soldiers was much more crucial to their development, disciplines were tougher but fairer, and promotions were introduced in all infantry and cavalry positions and lower class men could now make careers as military officers depending on their success, It was largely due to these changes that the Army moved from the margins of society to something approaching respectability. Analyzing Dijkstra s Letter Essay Critically Analyzing Dijkstra s Go To Statement Considered Harmful Recognizing the argument, determining the types of reasoning used, and identifying logical fallacies are important aspects to critically analyzing information. The paragraphs that follow provide a critical analysis of Edsger Dijkstra s famous letter, Go To Statement Considered Harmful . Critical Analysis Recognizing the Argument In 1968, Edsger Dijkstra wrote a letter to the editor of Journal of the ACM entitled Go To Statement Considered Harmful . In his letter, he insisted that the future of programming would require a structural approach. Prior to this time, programmer s use of the go to statement was conventional. Dijkstra argued that the usage of the go to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He argued that if he were to stop a program at an arbitrary place in time that it was of the utmost importance for the programmer to know exactly how his program reached that point and that it is duplicable. When an unstructured go to statement is used, it can allow the execution of the program to withdraw prematurely from a loop before it finishes completing. It also, can allow the program to arbitrarily jump into a loop that has already initiated the process of iterating, thus causing the programmer to have difficulty identifying a definitive answer to what the variables actually represent at that specific time (Tribble, 2005). Dijkstra described, The unbridled use of the go to statement has an immediate consequence that it becomes terribly hard to find a meaningful set of coordinates in which to describe the process progress (Dijkstra, 1968, p.147). Due to his discoveries, Dijkstra argued, The go to statement as it stands is just too primitive; it is too much an invitation to make a mess of one s program (Dijkstra, 1968, p.147). Determining Types of Reasoning Dijkstra used inductive reasoning as a way to present his arguments against the go to statement. Inductive reasoning is an argument in which the premises claim to support the conclusion in such a way that, if the premises are assumed to be true, then (based on that assumption) it is probable that the conclusion is true (Herms, 1984). Dijkstra began his letter by declaring that the go to statement ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If We Were Birds To this day, I can discretely remember watching an episode of war in an historical Indian drama where the men were out fighting a war, while women left in the city gathered in preparation for Jauhar. Innocently, I asked my mom what the women were doing. They are preparing for the possibility that their army might lose the battle. I didn t understand her answer at the time, in fact it slipped my mind until I started reading If We Were Birds. Researching the usage of rape as a tactic of war and reading the two works have enhanced my understanding such that I am now able to infer, very accurately, the meaning behind my mom s incomplete explanation. With my present power, I don t think I can help increase awareness on the local, let alone global level. It makes me feel powerless, like how the women must have felt. However, I will continue to bear witness by learning about the horrible events that women experienced and continue to experience today, for that is all I can do presently. I strongly feel that if those women had the courage to speak out against the violence despite knowing about the repercussions they would have to face, I have no excuse for not speaking out. In the future sometime, I would like to join an organization devoted to raising awareness about this dehumanizing tactic, so that I will be able to make use to this knowledge that I have gained and will continue to gain and free myself from the agony that despite knowing, I continued to remain ... The Pros And Cons Of Organized Labor Organized labor began to rise as the business tycoons and big business owners, ...took advantage of this lawless environment to build fortunes, destroy reputations, exploit both workers and the environment, and gouge consumers (Shi Tindall 620). Such acts by the business tycoons prompted many workers to demand higher wages, better working hours, and safer working conditions. As the turn of the 20th Century approached, factories started emerging, and technological innovations since, The U.S. patents office, which had recorded only 276 inventions during the 1790 s, registered almost 250,000 new patents in the 1890 s (Shi Tindall 622). The inventions led to the advancement of machines in factories as they reduced labor costs, lowered the production costs of certain goods, and essentially creating a widespread mass production of goods. As most individuals began to notice, unfairness among their workplace, they included themselves in certain labor unions including the Knights of Labor (KOL), Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), and the American Federation of Labor (AFL). All three groups had different beliefs: the Knights of Labor included all members whether skilled or unskilled in their group; the AFL rejected Capitalism and focused on working conditions as they were successful in organized labor; and lastly, the IWW strived for strong industrial unions or Unionism. It would seem that many benefits of a midday nap have been uncovered. Many famous people, such as Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, John F. Kennedy, and even as far back as napoleon, were known to appreciate napping, and perhaps they were onto something. Some even posit that the accepted human sleep pattern is not the natural human sleep pattern; it is merely one adopted as a result of our busy schedules. Questions Is it beneficial for adults to nap midday? If so, for how long? What are the positive and negative effects of afternoon naps? Harvard Health, May 2012, www.health.harvard.edu/healthbeat/the benefits of napping. Harvard Health Publications summarizes a study done on the benefits of napping in older adults. In this study, healthy older people had their sleep monitored for a few days. Half of the participants were then told to take short naps daily, while half were told to take long naps. When measured again two and four weeks later, both groups had increased total amounts of sleep, without any downsides commonly associated with napping, such as sleepiness during the day or inability to sleep at night. Very few have more respect than me for Harvard, I would venture to say. As a top institution in the country, I am inclined to accept this source as a reliable one. However, I am not entirely sure about the usefulness of this article to my topic. It does, of course, discuss the benefits of naps, but it only looks at a very narrow section of it, specifically in 50 80 year old adults in good health. • 34. Morley Callaghan Symbols Books are the foundation of diverse characters and themes, though are often overlooked; a reader finds intrigue by the story rather than the meaning written between the lines of the written text. The author works feverishly to bring these ideas forward through the variety of literary devices, however the hard work put into the novel does not necessarily achieve recognition. The Loved and the Lost by Morley Callaghan contains effective use of literary devices to develop the characters morals, and their position in society concerning social status and societal isolation. The techniques that author skillfully uses include flashback, dialogue and symbolism. Flashback works to characterize and shape each character, while dialogue creates interactions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Callaghan excels in using symbolism with his knowledge on both society and the understanding of what the images represent. Symbols work to break down a character and present their opinions on society to gain a better understanding of what the individual believes in. Peggy Sanderson is an advocate for change in the treatment of black culture and is constantly showing her respect for the group that others oppress. A symbol that best describes Peggy s opinion is the river, which flows around the city of Montreal. It was those who wanted a change who preferred the broad flowing river (Callaghan 1), perfectly describing Peggy through the use of symbolism in nature. Peggy wants to see change in the world and her strive for change is like a river that is constantly flowing. Water in a river never stops and fresh water replaces it as it flows. Peggy never stops respecting the African American culture and will always speak her mind on the subject, despite what others believe. Similar to the river, the mountain is also an important piece of symbolism in the text. Symbolism creates a representation of the societal mindset and the ways by which a society works. Segregation in the text is more than common and the isolation between groups is prominent. In Callaghan s work, the white culture is racist and oppresses the black culture, remaining stuck in their oppressive ways. The belief that their ways should not change describes Catherine Carver, a young woman who has a divorce and engages in a romantic relationship with McAlpine. Catherine is the daughter of Mr. Carver, an aristocrat who is very set in his ways and does not believe in change, which he passes down to his daughter. In contrast to the river, the mountain represents Catherine and the overall white culture at the time. A mountain is firm and never moves nor does it change, which is why those who wanted ... • 36. Women and Sports Essay Women and Sports As it becomes increasingly acceptable for women to be athletic in American culture, a new question arises: in which sports should women be allowed to participate? From a physiological standpoint, it has been scientifically proven that female bodies do not differ significantly enough from male bodies to prevent them from participation in any male sports. This division between male and female sports clearly stems from age old, socially constructed norms of femininity and masculinity. When women attempt to challenge these societal molds by participating in sports that are traditionally male, the intricate web of norms is disrupted. Like many other instances where traditional social constructions are tinkered with, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women are expected to be more passive than their male counterparts. When a woman participates in sport, she challenges many aspects of the gender role that has been defined for her. First, she is taking time away from her family to do an activity that is outside the home. Second, in sport, she is behaving in a more aggressive and competitive manner, which contradicts the meek feminine mold to which she is supposed to adhere. Furthermore, when women compete in public, suddenly the lines begin to blur. Men no longer have the monopoly over the role of universal breadwinner. Challenging these socially constructed lines works as a catalyst for social change. All women athletes, both in traditional and non traditional sports, play a pivotal role in instigating this change. Female bodies were traditionally expected to be small, slender, soft, and pretty, while male bodies were supposed to be muscular, large, solid, and handsome. Sports such as gymnastics and figure skating allow and almost require that women maintain such feminine physical qualities. Athletes competing in sports such as power lifting and rowing are encouraged to increase muscle mass at a rapid rate thereby acquiring a physical stature that society deems masculine. Furthermore, while technique is essential to these sports, there is a significant emphasis on brute strength. Brute strength contradicts the passive femininity that is expected of women. There are briefs, usually indirect references to another work or to real or historical events or persons, traditionally as a way of connecting those elements as well as enriching the meaning of the current work through associations with the other. In his poem Musee des Beaux Arts , W.H. Auden uses allusions as a way of drawing connections between his poem, Peter Brueghel s painting The Fall of Icarus , the myth, and the humanity indifference toward one s suffering. The ploughman did not care about the splashing sound Icarus made, when he felt into the water. Auden s allusion to the fallen Icarus in Breughel s painting is seen as a significant event as to make the point of the poem stronger: apathy of human suffering. Like many other sonnets, Musee des Beaux Arts is divided into two parts. In general, the first lines of the poem explore the depth of humanities indifference to one another. Auden makes allusion to the old master painters of the museum of fine art, who were never wrong about suffering. The old masters understood that people often turned a blind eye to one another s suffering. The Old Masters were artists of the 18th century whose works, masterpieces of the Renaissance, also are called old masters. They often painted classical scenes of pagan Greece and Rome as well as scenes of life and death, like the Fall of Icarus. About suffering they were never wrong, The old Masters: how well they understood Its human position; how it takes place While someone is eating or opening a window...
