The Psychosocial Impact of Psoriasis, a Skin Condition
Don t judge a book by its cover is one of the greatest known metaphorical phrases in human history.
People constantly identify with and attempt to apply the concept in everyday life; yet our society has
constructed a paradigm in which the perfection of your skin predetermines your social interactions in
life. Likewise it is important to comprehend that it is not only on the side of society s judgements
which determines your interactions, but it is also that of the lowered self esteem of the individual. To
garner apposite knowledge, the task at hand required the interviewing of a person with a skin
condition with the aim to internalise and reflect upon the biopsychosocial as well as cultural impacts
of the illness. I was lucky enough to have the privilege of interviewing Jane Doe, a 20 year old white
female with a history of psoriasis since age five. I was introduced to Jane through a close friend and
entering into a professional relationship, she agreed to help me in my endeavour. Drawing on the
principles of interviewing I ensured that it was a quiet, confidential and comfortable space1; thus it
took place in her home. Jane has had a difficult beginning in life as psoriasis a common, chronic
immune mediated skin disease currently has no cure and is characterised by scaly, reddened patches,
papules, and plaques, which usually itch.2
A difficult medical history
The difficulty to comprehend living with a disease characterised by such vivid visual aspects is

Summary Of The Night Circus, By Erin Morgenstern
The Night Circus written by Erin Morgenstern depicts the tale of two lovers bound by a challenge that
forces them to compete against each other. It was a romantic tale, from which the reader can develop a
strong sense of emotion with the two lovers. In this novel, Morgenstern uses the character Bailey to
demonstrate the ideas of love, passion vs obsession and standing up for yourself. Love is a very
influential idea in the story, without it Bailey wouldn t have taken over the circus. However, Bailey s
obsession with the circus makes him abandon his family. Additionally, Bailey would not take over the
circus without him finally standing up for himself. Morgenstern engages the reader with an exciting
storyline and uses a large range of language ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, from the earliest starting point to the end, characters are seen standing up for themselves. A
prominent example is when towards the end of the book, Bailey stands up for himself and his future.
With regards to Bailey s future, all his family is endeavouring to control his future. His grandma needs
him to head off to college, yet his father states he is taking control over the family farm and won t tune
in to anyone else. The easy thing to do would be to let the issue drop... Instead, and he is not entirely
certain why, he keeps the subject alive, bringing it up as often as possible. (Morgenstern 107) Despite
the fact that Bailey s dad won t tune in, Bailey continues pushing, winding up more forceful with what
he needs. In the end of the book Bailey goes to bat for himself and his future. When he is going out
with the goal to join the circus and is caught by his sister, he says, I don t care if you don t understand
that. Staying here won t make me happy. It will make you happy because you are insipid and boring,
and an insipid, boring life is enough for you. It s not enough for me. It will never be enough for me.
So, I m leaving. (Morgenstern 363) In this quote, Morgenstern uses repetition with the word it to
reinforce the importance of the message, build suspense and also stress the significance of the
message as this is a massive turning point in the story. In this passage Bailey

Stereotypes In The Cosby Show
When television shows were first aired, the majority of the main characters were white, if you saw
someone of color they were most likely playing the role of a servant. According to pbs.org, in 1983
there was a shift in television when NBC aired an all Black cast sitcom, The Cosby Show. The Cosby
Show was the first show that did not promote negative racial slurs within the media. Sitcoms are
affecting American culture negatively by promoting detrimental stereotypes. Maybe Brown People
aren t so scary if they re funny is the title of a chapter by Dina Ibrahim, from a book called The Color

In the Academic Journal The Use of Social Media in Teaching Race by Kathy Nakagawa PhD.
Nakagawa says people who speak about race the most are those who don t have authority or accurate
knowledge. When we talk about different races we usually talk about what we have heard, not what
we actually know. Kathryn Sorrels, the author of the book, Intercultural Communication:
Globalization and Social Justice said, Often the assumptions, stereotypes, and attitudes we hold about
people from different cultures or distant countries come solely or primarily through media and popular
forms such as movies, TV programs, and celebrities (Sorrels 125). Sorrels then gets her audience to
think about if it is the producers fault or the actors fault for taking the role. Sorrels later talks about the
3 areas to look at when studying popular culture. Only 2 and 3 are very important, (2) textual analysis,
where the actual product or text the TV program or film ... is analyzed for symbolic meaning and
narrative content; and (3) audience analysis, where the means and interpretations that
viewers/reader/listeners decode from popular from popular culture text are investigated. The
information is something to consider when viewing a sitcom, how does the audience know if the
information is accurate. Most viewers just believe most of what they see on

Second-Hand Smoke
The Effects of Second Hand Smoke Imagine yourself sitting down to dinner at a restaurant. You are
sitting down trying to enjoy your dinner when all you can smell is smoke. Not only are you just
breathing in the smoke, it is also damaging your body at the same time. Or imagine yourself at your
work place, whether it be a restaurant or office, and you are forced to breathe in second hand smoke
the entire time you are there. In this paper you will be informed of the harmful effects of second hand

Annually, second hand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke also known as ETS, kills an estimated
35,000 people from heart disease, 3,000 from lung cancer, and 1,900 from sudden infant death

Dr. Norman H. Edelman, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association says, Second hand

Dr. David L. Katz, A clinical professor of public health, and director of the prevention research center

passage. How can any society allow tobacco smoke to be imposed on innocent bystanders? We have
clear, convincing evidence that those who smoke are swinging a big stick indeed at the noses of those
of us who don t. While they should have autonomy over their choices, they should not have autonomy
over ours. Smoking in public places does not stop where my nose begins, and therefore it should be
banned. Not just in some states, but by

Australian Justice System Analysis
Introduction
The justice system of Australia was originally developed on 1 January 1901, this was named the
constitution. The organised system of law which is now enforced in Australia originated from a series
of British statuses, when they colonised Australia. Although the laws of Australia is now different
from the United Kingdom in many respects, from the beginnings of the settlement; the underlying
patterns of thought reflect the common law traditions which were originally received from Britain of
the time. The constitution has 128 sections which covers everything from the structure and power of
federal, state and local government, to the establishment of the High Court of Australia, High Court
more powerful than District Court. There are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

but in recent times it is now being seen that they are appearing in lower level courts (district).

Literary Criticism In The Help
Over the summer, I was assigned to read a novel of my choice for my English Honors class. I had
decided upon reading The Help, because it is a great piece of literature written from the perspective of
The Help by a twenty three year old struggling journalist about the maids lives and struggles in the
1960 s. I was then detailed to use the piece of literature that I had chosen to read, to then express a
type of literary criticism. Upon countless days of pondering the opheldering question of what type of
literary criticism I would choose, I then decided to choose Post Structuralism Criticism. Post
Structuralism Criticism is formalism that considers the text of the piece of literature, and the author s
role in creating the text. I then had to use this criticism and piece it with the novel, to express it
rightfully. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The authors role in the story affected the novel, because it was told as a true story based on the lives of
the Help. Because the author grew up being cared for and raised by a member of the Help, and when
she became an adult she felt compassion and sympathy toward the other black maids, when the other
white women did not. She then decided upon interviewing members of the help, to explain their
stories, and to show how they were treated, because no one ever done anything like it before, because
of the dangers of getting caught, because it was incredibly illegal. Even though she was undermined
by everybody in Jackson, Mississippi she still continued on with her dream of becoming a journalist,
and letting everyone know about the struggles, and lives of the black maids. Although she risked
everything from being caught and jailed, to being ridiculed by all of the other white women she chose
to take that chance and write the book

Pros And Cons Of Technology Based Society
With the world we live in today, it s not a secret that we are moving towards a more technological
based society. Just like with other aspects of life, there are pros and cons to this transition. First off,
with technology becoming more of a necessity in today s world, more people and businesses rely on
this for their daily lives and operations. For example, according to (Schiffer, 2017), a casino used an
internet connected fish tank to help keep track of the tank s temperature, cleanliness, and food. The
article goes on to tell how the casino s information was hacked by hackers accessing to the fish tank.
Personally, I was amazed by how the hackers could hack an entire casino, through one fish tank. On
the other hand, a technology based world can also make life easier. For example, Amazon has now
begun to use robots in their warehouses to sort and pick items. Although this may threaten some
employee s jobs, these machines are easier to operate and can be monitored more closely than an
employee. The fish tank in the casino and the robots that Amazon use are classified as the Internet of
Things.
According to (Cornish, 2017), the internet of things refers to electronic devices that transmits
information back and forth of the internet. These items include but are not limited to Fitbits and
Amazon Echo with Alexa. I personally own an Amazon Echo and I can say that I love using it. Using
only your voice, it can play music, call someone, or even search the Internet. With the

How To Achieve Homelessness In Canada
Something I would like to see changed in the Canadian public policy is to implement ways for all
Canadians to have sustainable housing. The government is for the people. Our country has more than
enough resources that none of its citizens should be without a home and homeless people should not
be viewed at or treated in another way than others. We are all human. Looking back at chapter 1 in
Staying Alive , epidemiologists were trying to convey the overall message that inequality is bad for
our health and that each individual must have the basic needs to survive. This relates back to the issue
of homelessness, as they are ones who do not have the basic needs to survive. The most commonly
used measure of inequality is that of income differences (Raphael, 2014, p.24). ... Show more content

If you are living in a small neighborhood, most of the people are comparable economically. Having
enough food and clean water and shelter takes precedence over economic justice. For countries with a
low GDP, life expectancy estimates tend to increase with increasing GDP, which can indicate that
everyone is getting the basic necessities of life and living standards are improving (Raphael, 2014, p.
26). When I came across Box 1.1: What Produces Health in a Population , it strikes me thinking that
the homeless population do not have access to this. For example, the provision of the basic needs
(food, water, shelter, security), provision of caring and sharing which is measured by the distribution
of wealth, resources, and income, access to basic health care services, cultural elements of social
harmony, and a focus on early life (Raphael, 2014, p.26). Knowing that these homeless people are not
able to live somewhere with a roof above their head with a guardian taking care of them is quite

The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara And Horatio Alger
Success is the chance to go out there and use the resources available to take advantage of opportunities
that most people do not. Usually, things happen in life and it can prevent the process of obtaining
success. In the readings, The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara and Horatio Alger by Harlon L. Dalton
conveys the message that success is not always an everyday thing and it takes opportunities for it to
become part of life. In The Lesson , an angered girl named Sylvia is taken on a field trip to a toy store
with Miss Moore to learn a valuable lesson. The lesson is to become successful in society because it is
the only way to make it to the top. On the other hand, Horatio Alger shows more of a realistic
viewpoint where success is not as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dalton states, Black folk certainly know what it is like to be favored, disfavored, scrutinized, and
ignored all on the basis of our race. Sometimes we are judged on a different scale altogether (273).
Dalton is trying to state that African Americans know what it is like to be judged and because of this it
creates a road block. In addition, race has become a universal problem that people tend to cause huge
tensions and the way Horatio Alger s essay states it is that everyone is equal would not be true. On the
other hand, Sylvia seems to be under the paradox that Dalton has stated about race. Sylvia throughout
the story goes on a field trip to a toy store where she sees items that cost a lot of money from the glass
window, but when she enters the store an issue occurs. Sylvia states, Not that I m scared, what s there
to be afraid of, just a toy store. But I feel funny, shame. But what I got to be shamed about? Got as
much right to go in as anybody (269). Sylvia is afraid to enter the store because the fear of race keeps
occurring in her mind. It is a huge issue because African Americans had many different views and it
made them feel insecure. Also, Sylvia knows that the toy store is fancy and expensive, which triggers
her to back off because she is from a poor background. Race has a huge impact on society, no matter
what way it is looked at and Sylvia s fear expresses that of many at the time.

King Corn Food Analysis
I can truly say that I have never been as disgusted researching and writing a paper than I am writing
one about the production and growth of food. In a previous course, I had to watch the documentary,
King Corn. Watching that film alone was an eye opener for me because it went into depth about how
80% of Americas antibiotics were used on cows because of being corn fed, but I never knew how
drastic the food industry was. Now that I have watched two drastic films and read the chapter on
Food, I feel as if I never want to eat food unless it is grown by me. With a growing population, there is
a demand for an increase in agriculture. After learning about the statistics of how much agriculture
consumes our planet, I was appalled to see how destructive it is. Jonathan Foley put into perspective
the increase and rapid demand for food. Agriculture alone consumes 40% of our land surface, 70% of
our irrigation system, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has been taken over by large companies and marketed at high price. Our food is grown based on
demand, not on health. In the film, Food, Inc., the chickens and cows are raised to be slaughtered as
quick as possible. They are beefed up with feed that is full of antibiotics that become harmful for
digestion. The chicken that are raised are in small areas where they have never been exposed to
sunlight. There are plenty that die each day because of the conditions they are being kept in. The
chicken s organs cannot keep up with their growth, therefore, they cannot take two steps. Cows are
basically in the same situation as the chickens. They are being fed corn instead of grass and are
confined to small areas. Listening to the documentary about how the chances of cows being cleaned
before slaughtered is traumatizing. That is the food that we eat and how we are supposed to have our
intake of energy. If this is how the industry is treating the population we have today, I do not see much
difference for the population

father in a small community located in Montegut, Louisiana, known by the locals as the Bathtub for its

They are faced with periods of intense storms and flooding, as well as long dry periods due to climate
change, but their community survives together, helping and protecting each other, and living by their
own rules, separate from what society wants. During the movie, Hushpuppy sees life through her own

lights and the music are a newfound paradise. Hushpuppy spots a woman from the kitchen, and
assumes it s her mother from her voice. Her mother talks with her, still not knowing they re at all
related, and cooks a meal for her. Hushpuppy, seeing that her mother is content with her life, and
possibly her choices, decides that she needs to support the only other person that supported her: her
father. Hushpuppy races back to her dying father, her mother s leftover food in a to go box, and before
she reaches her home, the aurochs approach her. She fearlessly faces off with them, reaching a primal
sort of understanding, and proceeds freely, confident and stronger, back to her father. She feeds him
the food, they exchange goodbyes, and he dies. She returns to her community, her home, content with
her decisions and emboldened, ready to face anything that comes her way. The rift between both
societies in the movie is a very important conflict in the story, as it separates them both physically and
mentally. Hushpuppy and her father live in the Bathtub, the other more civilized people live on the

Argumentative Essay On Embryonic Stem Cells
i.
Stem cells have the potential to develop and multiply into many different cell types in the body. Stem
cells are able to divide throughout life without limit. This causes the stem cells to be able to develop
into another cell type, which means it is specialised cell; to do a more specific function or it may
remain the same. [5] As stem cells divide they have the ability to help to be able to renew or repair
damaged tissue.[3,5]There are two main stem cell, Embryonic Stem Cells and Adult Stem Cells.

[4] Stem cells are able to serves as an internal repair and are able to divide without limit. [5] One of
these three unique properties is their ability to self renew. Stem cells are able to renew themselves
without any limit. The second properties that makes stem cells important is how they have the ability
to differentiate into specialised cells with characteristics and have different functions. The third
important property is that stem cells have a large amount of unspecialised cells, which give rise to
specialised cells. [4]
The potential uses for embryonic stem cells are to be able to improve the understanding of how the
body is developing from a fertilised egg. [8] To try understand how diseases happen and how they
develop throughout the body, such as cancer and birth defects, which are a result from cell division
and the process of differentiation to specialised cells. Other uses for embryonic stem cells is that they
have the potential to be able to create and produce new medical drugs with the ability to be able to
study the stems cells to see how they could be able to treat them.

maltreatment of others leads to loss. Before Kenny s entered their lives, Frank and Tub were close
friends. Kenny isolated the two so that they could not team up against him. He cleaves the two, by
describing Tub offensively as wasting away before urging Frank to also humiliate Tub (Wolff 88).
Kenny provokes the two to keep Frank on his own side, against Tub. This enforces Kenny s
representation of the horseman of Pestilence, or the Conqueror. Pestilence is described as the destroyer
of opposition. A reformed friendship between Frank and Tub could oppose Kenny s reign, which is
why he works to destroy it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While Kenny removes resistance, Frank vanquishes peace as the horseman of War. First, Frank
destroys Tub s internal peace by criticizing Tub s weight. Frank ceaselessly pesters Tub, accusing his
fat as the reason he has not seen [his] own balls in ten years (Wolff 88). Through this offensive
approach, Tub is forced on the defensive. This maltreatment dismantles the once healthy relationship,
ultimately leading to the destruction of a healthy relationship between the two characters. However,
Frank also terminates his own peace by falling for a girl decades younger, destroying his current
marriage. This internal war between morality and lust, manifests in his consideration to divorce his
wife who has been damned good to me all these years (Wolff 97). This leads him to lose all hopes for
maintaining his own family. Family is considered a symbol of stability, yet the war waged makes
Frank lose this. After the horsemen of War, Famine streaks through. Famine is considered the result of
war. Tub represents famine through his many

My Virtual Child Reflection Essay
My Virtual Child Reflection:
Bilal s Development from Infancy through Adolescent
Fatima Hussien

My Virtual Child Reflection When I found out that we would be raising a virtual child, I had my
doubts on how it would compare to the raising an actual child. But I am glad to say that I was wrong,
the first night of raising my virtual child took me by surprise, on how detailed everything was. Going
in I had expectations and hopes for Bilal to fulfill, I made sure that my expectations and hopes for him
were more realistic and was not pushing him out of his confront zone in any kind of way. My
expectations and hopes were that Bilal always stayed true to himself, never act like someone that he

And by three years of age, the toddler is expected to gain anywhere from three to five pounds, grow
about three inches in height, and also have all twenty of his/her primary teeth grown in (2016).
According to Jean Piaget, there are four stages of cognitive development that a child will go through.
The first stage is known as the sensorimotor stage; it is from birth to about two years of age. The
sensorimotor stage is a period that the cognitive development rapidly grows and during this time
frame the infant develops an understanding of the world through trial and error using their senses and
actions (McLeod, 2015). An example of an experience that Bilal went through during the sensorimotor
stage would be when Bilal was eight months old, I tried the object permanence test I did this by hiding
an object from Bilal and have him look for it, when the location of the object changed Bilal would
look for it where he previously saw it (My Virtual Child, 2014). The social and

The essay, A Mild Defense of Professor Angelina Jolie written by Daniel Drezner, speaks of the
controversy of Jolie gain a position as a professor of practice at the London School of Economics in

because people think that she gained the position from her no

The Code Of Federal Regulations
Under Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 139, the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) is required to issue airport operating certificates to airports that serve scheduled
and unscheduled air carrier aircraft with more than 30 seats or serve scheduled air carrier operations in
aircraft with more than 9 seats but less than 31 seats. To ensure that airports are meeting the
requirements of 14 CFR Part 139, there are approximately 35 FAAAirport Certification Safety
Inspectors that conduct annual and unannounced certification inspections. In the course of the
inspection, inspectors look at the movement areas, aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF), fuel
facilities, and lighting. Additionally, the inspectors view the airport files and the airport certification
manual, Airport Master Record (FAA Form 5010), Notices to Airmen (NOTAM), and airfield self
inspection forms.
Self Inspection
The self inspection program is considered to be a key component of an airport operator s airport
certification program and required under 14 CFR Part 139.327. The responsibility of the self
inspection program falls primarily to the airport owner or operator. Even though it is possible for some
hazards to develop suddenly, most hazardous conditions develop over time and are more gradual. As a
result, it is important that the airport has a comprehensive airport safety self inspection program in
order to identify and correct any deteriorating safety conditions. The scope of the

Tert-Butyl Chloride Lab Report
The aim of this experiment was to perform a reaction via a Sn1 reaction to prepare tert Butyl chloride
and test the effectiveness of the reaction by examining the reactivity of the product. To prepare tert
Butylchloride from tert Butylalcohol, one must cause a Sn1 reaction to occur. An Sn1 reaction is a
monomolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction, meaning that one molecule is involved in each step
of the Sn1 reaction. First, the leaving group leaves. After the leaving group leaves, the nucleophile has
enough room to form a bond with the carbocation. As a result, the leaving group is replaced by the
nucleophile (Michman 2016). In our reaction, the nucleophile is chlorine and the leaving group is
water, which forms after the protonation of hydroxide to form a better leaving ... Show more content

On the other hand, Sn2 reactions are dimolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction; thus, all steps of
the reaction occur simultaneously. Rather than the leaving group leaving and then the nucleophile
attacking, the leaving group begins to break its bond with carbon as the nucleophile begins to form a
bond with the carbon. Sn2 reactions result in an inversion of stereochemistry because the nucleophile
must form its bond with carbon behind the leaving group, since the leaving group is still partially
attacked (Michman 2016). To synthesize tert Butylchloride we must use an Sn1 reaction pathway
because Sn1 reaction are more stable modes of substitution in tertiary and secondary alkyl halides and
alcohols (Michman 2016). Sn2 reactions are more effective for primary alkyl halides and alcohols.
This is again because tertiary alkyl halide, like tert Butylalcohol, are very large the leaving group must
leave first to make room for nucleophile. Still, there are some complications that come into play when

Comparison Of Nonviolent Uprising And The Mau Uprising
Max Johnson PLSC 315 11/4/14
Outline: Comparison of the Resistance against British Rule in India and Kenya
My two cases for comparison are the Indian Independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi against
British rule, and the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya, also against rule by the British Commonwealth. The
two uprisings occurred in the mid 1900s, with the Indian Independence movement taking place before
and during World War II, and the Mau Mau uprising occurring after the war. The predominantly
nonviolent Indian Independence Movement resulted in success and Indian self rule, whereas the
violent uprising in Kenya failed in its immediate goal of the removal of British authorities. The
principal actors in both movements were citizens subjected to suppressive policies enacted by British
rule, as well as economic exploitation and social degradation. Gandhi led the people of India through
nonviolent movements aimed at dispelling the British government, whereas the Kikuyu group in
Kenya had little to no center of authority. The two cases offer a useful comparison of the overall
effectiveness of violent and nonviolent conflicts. The type of uprising (violent of nonviolent) is a key
factor in determining a movement s success or failure, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Britain, as a global superpower, was able to relatively easily contain the Mau Mau uprising once it got
wind of the violence inflicted upon its people. The incident in Kenya helps prove the notion that
violence will almost always be met with violence. For policymakers, an assessment of the two
instances of resistance allows an insight into the effects of colonial rule on colonized countries, both

Coal Was Formed During The Carboniferous Period
Coal was formed during the Carboniferous Period, which was between 360 290 million years ago. All
of the coal originated from plant fossils. Around 400 million years ago plants once grew around fresh
water swamps. As they eventually died, the plants fell and accumulate in the water. Many layers of
sediments, mud and sand compressed the plants and allowed no oxygen, which results in no
decomposition. Over time the layers get built up resulting in immense pressure and heat transforming
each layer into different types of coal. For the substance to be considered coal it needed to contain less
than 50% of ash forming mineral matter. The four stages of coal are: Peat, Lignite (brown coal), Sub
bituminous coal, Bituminous coal and Anthracite.

The Events Of The Holocaust
Perhaps one of the greatest tragedies of morality in the modern world were those acts committed by
Hitler s regime in WWII. Wherein, several million people lost their lives, homes, careers, and rights.
The largest of these people were the Jewish, but also people that Hitler deemed as subversives
homosexuals, disabled, etc. In the holocaust these people were systematically oppressed through a
degradation of rights; murdered in gruesome methods; and enslaved for the duration of the war. It is of
the utmost importance that we do not forget about this great tragedy. It is my hope that we can all
remember those lost and learn the lessons of morality the holocaust taught us. Perhaps one of the most
important aspects of the Holocaust was the leading events to the final imprisonment and
extermination. These events allowed the German people to dehumanize Jews and subversives too such
a point that they thought of them as nothing more than animals. This was a complete degradation of
rights and respect. It is not easy to sum these events up as it follows a long timeline, however, there
are a few critical events I will mention. At the end of WWI Germany was fully blamed and owed a lot
of money in reparation. This eventually bankrupted Germany and caused a great amount of anger and
hate to build. On Jan 30th, 1933 Hitler is appointed as chancellor of Germany and all hell begins to
break loose ( Holocaust Timeline ). The Jewish people have many rights stripped away such as land

Irony In Dido In Dido
Despite the fact that historically Rome and Greece were bitter enemies, the complexity and sympathy
inherent in Dido s character and indeed the entire episode in Carthage was meant by Virgil to cast
doubt on the nature of the relationship and animosity between the two territories, both during Aeneas s
time and beyond. When the storm that strands Aeneas in Carthage subsides, his men clamber onshore,
appeal to the queen and beg her for solace. You could well, with impunity, battle [Aeneas] as to who
was more generous...Please let us haul our storm ravaged navy onshore on your beaches, / Cut down
wood from your forests to craft new planking and oarage... (1.548 552) It is important to note here
that, before the reader is even introduced to the concept proper, the Trojans entreaty touches upon a
code of conduct seen as befitting a righteous warrior; this concept is later elaborated on by Anchises.
Mercy for those cast down and relentless war upon proud men. (6.853) To their surprise, the queen
warmly invites the Trojans to stay within Carthage s borders, despite any animosities that may have
plagued them in the past. We Carthaginians are not quite that insensate and heartless, / Nor does the
Sun yoke his team that far away from our Tyrian city! (1.567 568) Dido s behavior here is explained
by Venus as a result of a desire to help the weak following her self imposed exile from Tyre to escape
from her brother Pygmalion a concept the Trojans would likely relate to. Fortune has battered me too,
she tells them, with some similar twists, through so many / Trials, yet finally willed that I settle down
here in this country. / I am no stranger to hardship. I m learning to help those who suffer. (1.628 630)
Note the language used in these vignettes: Dido describes herself as learning to help sufferers and the
Carthiginians as not quite that insensate. It does not appear as if she is attempting to brush away or
ignore past conflicts; that most likely would not have gone over well with a Roman audience. More
likely, Virgil is trying to appeal to the idea that even one s enemies are human, make mistakes, and can
make reparations for them. This is part of the root of the sympathy the reader feels for Dido; she is an

The research group carried out a genome wide association to scan for sequence variants that influence
hair color, eye color and skin color in the europeans. Pigmentation in humans is attributed to the
number type and cellular distribution of melanosomes. When different number of melanosomes are
produced, they cause the differences in the skin pigmentation. The experiment was done with a sample
of people from Iceland and Holland. The results of this experiment showed how the samples were
broadly similar despite the fact that icelanders have more red hair, freckles and green eyes. They

The ultimately summarized the primary and secondary pigmentation traits are associated in the six
regions on the genome. The research allowed us to identify several new variants that account for
differences in the pigmentation. Each of these variants are viewed to have a moderate effect on
pigmentation in Europeans. It has been thought that before migrators bought the light skin species out
of africa 60,000 years back, our ancestors were all dark skinned. It is consistent with the correlation of
human skin pigmentation and proximity to the equator. The results of this research support the
conclusion that most of the pigmentation variants discovered in this study show positive selection in
European populations. The advantage of having a lighter skin pigmentation is that it facilitates the
formation of Vitamin D3 though lighter skin people live in colder areas where there is low exposure to
sunlight/ UV rays. The newly discovered determinants provide promising candidates for for forensic

People need to help the homeless families, the drug addicts, the alcoholics, and the mentally ill. They
need to know that someone cares for them. Homeless teens are also a major problem; most homeless
teens leave home because of abuse. Homeless teens are more likely to engage in sexual actives in
exchange for things such as food, clothes, money, and etc. Some homeless teens become addict to
drugs and other illegal substances. Decayed or missing teeth can hinder a teens self esteem. Poor oral
health affects the health of the individual, but also hinders a teens attempt to improve his or her life
circumstances. Homeless teens are at a greater risk of contracting AIDS, HIV, and other STDs.
Homeless teen girls are more likely to become pregnant and far more likely to experience multiple

The Feminist Perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Essay
The Feminist Perspective of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
In her feminist critique of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Anne Millard Daughtey described Buffy as a
show which obviously promotes female strength and power (159). Buffy herself is a symbol of female
empowerment (149); as feminists we can all take comfort in the fact that Buffy kicks butt and so can
we all (164). Sherryl Vint agrees that Buffy is a positive role model for young women, one which
feminism should celebrate (para. 3). I find this understanding of Buffy, both the character and the
series, to be very problematic, and with this paper I aim to undertake a revised feminist critique of the
show, and expose the Buffyverse as the product of a very traditional patriarchal ... Show more content

Before Buffy and her friends discover this, Dawn has a number of unnerving experiences, in which
people walk up to her staring, saying There s nothing there, you re not real, there s nothing there .
Truly, in the Buffyverse, there is no such thing as woman .
Prior to embarking upon my own analysis of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it this pertinent to consider
Joss Whedon s envisioning of his series, and in particular, his heroine, Buffy. In interviews he has
often explained his desire to create an alternative ending for the horror movie:
It was pretty much the blond girl in the alley in the horror movie who keeps getting killed ... I felt bad
for her, but she was always much more interesting to me than the other women. She was fun, she had
sex, she was vivacious. But then she would get punished for it. Literally, I just had that image, that
scene, in my mind, like the trailer for a movie what if the girl goes into that dark alley. And the
monster follows her. And she destroys him. (Quoted in Vint, para. 6)
Whilst we see here that Whedon s intention is to subvert the conventional horror movie/slasher genre,
I m not sure that he is successful. He is running the considerable risk of merely replacing the fetishised
female victim with a fetishised female hero; she is still a pretty blond girl, she is still fun, she is still
sexual, she is still Barbie with

Differences Between Four Freedoms Speech And Kfk s Speech
Both Roosevelt s Four Freedoms Speech and Kennedy s inaugural address expressess ideas about the
wars going on during their time of presidency. However, Roosevelt s speech implies we should fight
for ourselves and stay strong as a nation by being united, whereas Kennedy s speech states that we
should stand strong for each other and do our best to help those in need. Roosevelt is more about
keeping our country together, making sure that we can support ourselves in times of need. Kennedy is
not about preserving our country because he believes we stand strong already, that we are able to
withhold our power as a nation and help other countries or allies who will keep peace. The one real
big difference is how we will protect and portray our country to others. Between the two speeches
some similarities have occurred, mainly what to do for our country. An example from Roosevelt s
speech, We must all prepare to make the sacrifices that the emergency almost as serious as war itself
demands. Whatever stands in the way of speed and efficiency in defense preparations must give way
to the national need (Roosevelt 274). Compared to Kennedy s speech stating we will stand our ground,

  • 2. The Psychosocial Impact of Psoriasis, a Skin Condition Don t judge a book by its cover is one of the greatest known metaphorical phrases in human history. People constantly identify with and attempt to apply the concept in everyday life; yet our society has constructed a paradigm in which the perfection of your skin predetermines your social interactions in life. Likewise it is important to comprehend that it is not only on the side of society s judgements which determines your interactions, but it is also that of the lowered self esteem of the individual. To garner apposite knowledge, the task at hand required the interviewing of a person with a skin condition with the aim to internalise and reflect upon the biopsychosocial as well as cultural impacts of the illness. I was lucky enough to have the privilege of interviewing Jane Doe, a 20 year old white female with a history of psoriasis since age five. I was introduced to Jane through a close friend and entering into a professional relationship, she agreed to help me in my endeavour. Drawing on the principles of interviewing I ensured that it was a quiet, confidential and comfortable space1; thus it took place in her home. Jane has had a difficult beginning in life as psoriasis a common, chronic immune mediated skin disease currently has no cure and is characterised by scaly, reddened patches, papules, and plaques, which usually itch.2 A difficult medical history The difficulty to comprehend living with a disease characterised by such vivid visual aspects is beyond ... • 3. Summary Of The Night Circus, By Erin Morgenstern The Night Circus written by Erin Morgenstern depicts the tale of two lovers bound by a challenge that forces them to compete against each other. It was a romantic tale, from which the reader can develop a strong sense of emotion with the two lovers. In this novel, Morgenstern uses the character Bailey to demonstrate the ideas of love, passion vs obsession and standing up for yourself. Love is a very influential idea in the story, without it Bailey wouldn t have taken over the circus. However, Bailey s obsession with the circus makes him abandon his family. Additionally, Bailey would not take over the circus without him finally standing up for himself. Morgenstern engages the reader with an exciting storyline and uses a large range of language ... A prominent example is when towards the end of the book, Bailey stands up for himself and his future. With regards to Bailey s future, all his family is endeavouring to control his future. His grandma needs him to head off to college, yet his father states he is taking control over the family farm and won t tune in to anyone else. The easy thing to do would be to let the issue drop... Instead, and he is not entirely certain why, he keeps the subject alive, bringing it up as often as possible. (Morgenstern 107) Despite the fact that Bailey s dad won t tune in, Bailey continues pushing, winding up more forceful with what he needs. In the end of the book Bailey goes to bat for himself and his future. When he is going out with the goal to join the circus and is caught by his sister, he says, I don t care if you don t understand that. Staying here won t make me happy. It will make you happy because you are insipid and boring, and an insipid, boring life is enough for you. It s not enough for me. It will never be enough for me. So, I m leaving. (Morgenstern 363) In this quote, Morgenstern uses repetition with the word it to reinforce the importance of the message, build suspense and also stress the significance of the message as this is a massive turning point in the story. Stereotypes In The Cosby Show When television shows were first aired, the majority of the main characters were white, if you saw someone of color they were most likely playing the role of a servant. According to pbs.org, in 1983 there was a shift in television when NBC aired an all Black cast sitcom, The Cosby Show. The Cosby Show was the first show that did not promote negative racial slurs within the media. Sitcoms are affecting American culture negatively by promoting detrimental stereotypes. In the Academic Journal The Use of Social Media in Teaching Race by Kathy Nakagawa PhD. Nakagawa says people who speak about race the most are those who don t have authority or accurate knowledge. When we talk about different races we usually talk about what we have heard, not what we actually know. Kathryn Sorrels, the author of the book, Intercultural Communication: Globalization and Social Justice said, Often the assumptions, stereotypes, and attitudes we hold about people from different cultures or distant countries come solely or primarily through media and popular forms such as movies, TV programs, and celebrities (Sorrels 125). Sorrels then gets her audience to think about if it is the producers fault or the actors fault for taking the role. Sorrels later talks about the 3 areas to look at when studying popular culture. Only 2 and 3 are very important, (2) textual analysis, where the actual product or text the TV program or film ... is analyzed for symbolic meaning and narrative content; and (3) audience analysis, where the means and interpretations that viewers/reader/listeners decode from popular from popular culture text are investigated. Or imagine yourself at your work place, whether it be a restaurant or office, and you are forced to breathe in second hand smoke the entire time you are there. In this paper you will be informed of the harmful effects of second hand smoke, and why smoking should be banned from all public places. Dr. David L. How can any society allow tobacco smoke to be imposed on innocent bystanders? We have clear, convincing evidence that those who smoke are swinging a big stick indeed at the noses of those of us who don t. The organised system of law which is now enforced in Australia originated from a series of British statuses, when they colonised Australia. • 7. Literary Criticism In The Help Over the summer, I was assigned to read a novel of my choice for my English Honors class. I had decided upon reading The Help, because it is a great piece of literature written from the perspective of The Help by a twenty three year old struggling journalist about the maids lives and struggles in the 1960 s. I was then detailed to use the piece of literature that I had chosen to read, to then express a type of literary criticism. Upon countless days of pondering the opheldering question of what type of literary criticism I would choose, I then decided to choose Post Structuralism Criticism. Post Structuralism Criticism is formalism that considers the text of the piece of literature, and the author s role in creating the text. I then had to use this criticism and piece it with the novel, to express it rightfully. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She then decided upon interviewing members of the help, to explain their stories, and to show how they were treated, because no one ever done anything like it before, because of the dangers of getting caught, because it was incredibly illegal. Even though she was undermined by everybody in Jackson, Mississippi she still continued on with her dream of becoming a journalist, and letting everyone know about the struggles, and lives of the black maids. • 8. Pros And Cons Of Technology Based Society With the world we live in today, it s not a secret that we are moving towards a more technological based society. Just like with other aspects of life, there are pros and cons to this transition. First off, with technology becoming more of a necessity in today s world, more people and businesses rely on this for their daily lives and operations. For example, according to (Schiffer, 2017), a casino used an internet connected fish tank to help keep track of the tank s temperature, cleanliness, and food. The article goes on to tell how the casino s information was hacked by hackers accessing to the fish tank. Personally, I was amazed by how the hackers could hack an entire casino, through one fish tank. On the other hand, a technology based world can also make life easier. For example, Amazon has now begun to use robots in their warehouses to sort and pick items. Although this may threaten some employee s jobs, these machines are easier to operate and can be monitored more closely than an employee. The fish tank in the casino and the robots that Amazon use are classified as the Internet of Things. According to (Cornish, 2017), the internet of things refers to electronic devices that transmits information back and forth of the internet. These items include but are not limited to Fitbits and Amazon Echo with Alexa. I personally own an Amazon Echo and I can say that I love using it. Using only your voice, it can play music, call someone, or even search the Internet. With the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. How To Achieve Homelessness In Canada Something I would like to see changed in the Canadian public policy is to implement ways for all Canadians to have sustainable housing. The government is for the people. Our country has more than enough resources that none of its citizens should be without a home and homeless people should not be viewed at or treated in another way than others. We are all human. Looking back at chapter 1 in Staying Alive , epidemiologists were trying to convey the overall message that inequality is bad for our health and that each individual must have the basic needs to survive. This relates back to the issue of homelessness, as they are ones who do not have the basic needs to survive. The most commonly used measure of inequality is that of income differences (Raphael, 2014, p.24). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If you are living in a small neighborhood, most of the people are comparable economically. Having enough food and clean water and shelter takes precedence over economic justice. For countries with a low GDP, life expectancy estimates tend to increase with increasing GDP, which can indicate that everyone is getting the basic necessities of life and living standards are improving (Raphael, 2014, p. 26). When I came across Box 1.1: What Produces Health in a Population , it strikes me thinking that the homeless population do not have access to this. For example, the provision of the basic needs (food, water, shelter, security), provision of caring and sharing which is measured by the distribution of wealth, resources, and income, access to basic health care services, cultural elements of social harmony, and a focus on early life (Raphael, 2014, p.26). • 10. The Lesson By Toni Cade Bambara And Horatio Alger Success is the chance to go out there and use the resources available to take advantage of opportunities that most people do not. Usually, things happen in life and it can prevent the process of obtaining success. In the readings, The Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara and Horatio Alger by Harlon L. Dalton conveys the message that success is not always an everyday thing and it takes opportunities for it to become part of life. In The Lesson , an angered girl named Sylvia is taken on a field trip to a toy store with Miss Moore to learn a valuable lesson. The lesson is to become successful in society because it is the only way to make it to the top. On the other hand, Horatio Alger shows more of a realistic viewpoint where success is not as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dalton states, Black folk certainly know what it is like to be favored, disfavored, scrutinized, and ignored all on the basis of our race. Sometimes we are judged on a different scale altogether (273). Dalton is trying to state that African Americans know what it is like to be judged and because of this it creates a road block. In addition, race has become a universal problem that people tend to cause huge tensions and the way Horatio Alger s essay states it is that everyone is equal would not be true. On the other hand, Sylvia seems to be under the paradox that Dalton has stated about race. Sylvia throughout the story goes on a field trip to a toy store where she sees items that cost a lot of money from the glass window, but when she enters the store an issue occurs. Sylvia states, Not that I m scared, what s there to be afraid of, just a toy store. But I feel funny, shame. But what I got to be shamed about? Got as much right to go in as anybody (269). Sylvia is afraid to enter the store because the fear of race keeps occurring in her mind. It is a huge issue because African Americans had many different views and it made them feel insecure. Also, Sylvia knows that the toy store is fancy and expensive, which triggers her to back off because she is from a poor background. Race has a huge impact on society, no matter what way it is looked at and Sylvia s fear expresses that of many at the time. Secondly, chances are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. King Corn Food Analysis I can truly say that I have never been as disgusted researching and writing a paper than I am writing one about the production and growth of food. In a previous course, I had to watch the documentary, King Corn. Watching that film alone was an eye opener for me because it went into depth about how 80% of Americas antibiotics were used on cows because of being corn fed, but I never knew how drastic the food industry was. Now that I have watched two drastic films and read the chapter on Food, I feel as if I never want to eat food unless it is grown by me. With a growing population, there is a demand for an increase in agriculture. After learning about the statistics of how much agriculture consumes our planet, I was appalled to see how destructive it is. Jonathan Foley put into perspective the increase and rapid demand for food. Agriculture alone consumes 40% of our land surface, 70% of our irrigation system, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has been taken over by large companies and marketed at high price. Our food is grown based on demand, not on health. In the film, Food, Inc., the chickens and cows are raised to be slaughtered as quick as possible. They are beefed up with feed that is full of antibiotics that become harmful for digestion. The chicken that are raised are in small areas where they have never been exposed to sunlight. There are plenty that die each day because of the conditions they are being kept in. The chicken s organs cannot keep up with their growth, therefore, they cannot take two steps. Cows are basically in the same situation as the chickens. They are being fed corn instead of grass and are confined to small areas. Listening to the documentary about how the chances of cows being cleaned before slaughtered is traumatizing. That is the food that we eat and how we are supposed to have our intake of energy. Hushpuppy spots a woman from the kitchen, and assumes it s her mother from her voice. Her mother talks with her, still not knowing they re at all related, and cooks a meal for her. Hushpuppy, seeing that her mother is content with her life, and possibly her choices, decides that she needs to support the only other person that supported her: her father. Hushpuppy races back to her dying father, her mother s leftover food in a to go box, and before she reaches her home, the aurochs approach her. She fearlessly faces off with them, reaching a primal sort of understanding, and proceeds freely, confident and stronger, back to her father. She feeds him the food, they exchange goodbyes, and he dies. She returns to her community, her home, content with her decisions and emboldened, ready to face anything that comes her way. To ensure that airports are meeting the requirements of 14 CFR Part 139, there are approximately 35 FAAAirport Certification Safety Inspectors that conduct annual and unannounced certification inspections. To prepare tert Butylchloride from tert Butylalcohol, one must cause a Sn1 reaction to occur. An Sn1 reaction is a monomolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction, meaning that one molecule is involved in each step of the Sn1 reaction. First, the leaving group leaves. After the leaving group leaves, the nucleophile has enough room to form a bond with the carbocation. As a result, the leaving group is replaced by the nucleophile (Michman 2016). Sn2 reactions result in an inversion of stereochemistry because the nucleophile must form its bond with carbon behind the leaving group, since the leaving group is still partially attacked (Michman 2016). To synthesize tert Butylchloride we must use an Sn1 reaction pathway because Sn1 reaction are more stable modes of substitution in tertiary and secondary alkyl halides and alcohols (Michman 2016). Comparison Of Nonviolent Uprising And The Mau Uprising Max Johnson PLSC 315 11/4/14 Outline: Comparison of the Resistance against British Rule in India and Kenya My two cases for comparison are the Indian Independence movement led by Mahatma Gandhi against British rule, and the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya, also against rule by the British Commonwealth. The two uprisings occurred in the mid 1900s, with the Indian Independence movement taking place before and during World War II, and the Mau Mau uprising occurring after the war. The predominantly nonviolent Indian Independence Movement resulted in success and Indian self rule, whereas the violent uprising in Kenya failed in its immediate goal of the removal of British authorities. The principal actors in both movements were citizens subjected to suppressive policies enacted by British rule, as well as economic exploitation and social degradation. Gandhi led the people of India through nonviolent movements aimed at dispelling the British government, whereas the Kikuyu group in Kenya had little to no center of authority. Wherein, several million people lost their lives, homes, careers, and rights. The largest of these people were the Jewish, but also people that Hitler deemed as subversives homosexuals, disabled, etc. In the holocaust these people were systematically oppressed through a degradation of rights; murdered in gruesome methods; and enslaved for the duration of the war. It is of the utmost importance that we do not forget about this great tragedy. It is my hope that we can all remember those lost and learn the lessons of morality the holocaust taught us. Perhaps one of the most important aspects of the Holocaust was the leading events to the final imprisonment and extermination. These events allowed the German people to dehumanize Jews and subversives too such a point that they thought of them as nothing more than animals. This was a complete degradation of rights and respect. It is not easy to sum these events up as it follows a long timeline, however, there are a few critical events I will mention. At the end of WWI Germany was fully blamed and owed a lot of money in reparation. This eventually bankrupted Germany and caused a great amount of anger and hate to build.
