INTRODUCTION
1. Gothic architecture was started in Western Europe.
2. Western Europe forms separate nations and Germany was
termed as the holy nations.
3. Building materials used in various places-
a. Germany – bricks
b. France – coarse grained stone
c. Italy , England – white, colored marbles
4. These materials depicted the architecture of those
countries.
CHARACTERISTICS
FEATURES
 Pointed arch
 Flying buttresses
 High pinnacle
 They had proper idea of thrust and counter thrust
 They had knowledge about balance and stability of
structures.
 Solid massive walls with continuous vaults.
 multiple window openings

 They invented the flying buttress that supports exactly at
right angles.
 It shows a perfect equilibrium between piers, buttresses,
arches and vaults.
 Walls were hollowed out.
 Stained colored glass was used for
o Brilliant transparent pictures
o Rich material
o Glowed with fire

 The pointed arches became famous in Gothic architecture.
 This style was famous for aesthetics and technical
stabilities.
 They constructed town halls, royal palaces, court houses,
churches and hospitals.
 Churches were built mostly based on convenience.
 Rib or panel vault.
 Open timber roof.

 Doors and windows were proportional.
 Use of columns in galleries and to support semi circular
arches.
 The mouldings were enriched with delicate carvings.
 Ornamentation was done based on medieval mysticism
and Christian subjects.
 Ornamented doors, rose windows, flying buttresses, etc
was used.

 Constructed from 1163 to 1250.
 Icon of French Gothic style.
 Characteristics-
o Wide nave
o Double aisles
o Transcepts surrounded by chapels and towers.
o Cylindrical column divides the central nave.
o The main doorway has a central pillar with statue of Christ.
o Has beautiful façade and imposing features.
