My 2016 summer was a great journey. I was engulfed with driving and traveling around with my
family. During the summer my family and i bought a new lake house. So, almost every week
we would drive up there. I loved it cause i got wake up to the smell of the lake. I d get to see the
white fog covering the icy feeling of the lake in the morning. I really enjoyed it because when i
m up there, i feel it relieves so much stress. I don t have to worry about the news or school. To
me it s almost like a new world. Also, I love going out on the lake, doing tubing and more.
Overall the lake is a fun place to go to get away from the rest of the world and relax. Also to
spend time with family. Another big part of me being up there so much was that I eventually
got to know the owners of the local marina on the lake. Eventually i got to know them so well,
that i decided to apply for a job there. With a little help from my mom, i was able to fill out a
form and turn it in. Before i even knew it I got the job! It was fun and a big experience for me. It
was big for me because this was actually was my first official job experience, on the books. My
mom actually said to me, James make sure you act like a professional when at work. You never
know what life skills you might learn there. I got to work the cash register and in the kitchen,
cooking foods etc. One of my favorite memories was that i got to meet new people and get
introduced to their lifestyles. The other people who worked there were around the ages 16 21. It

The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, exposes the paradoxical relationships between Chinese immigrant
mothers and their American raised daughters. Although both sides experience their own strife in
life, the mothers are probably most notable for their struggle in assimilating to society. Given that
they are the first generations to have contact with the unfamiliar culture, they must set foot onto
the foreign land and sustain a stable life in order to provide for her children and give them a
prosperous life. The mothers are required to adapt to the language, environment, social roles, and
etc. Flexibility and adaptability varies from person to person. Before the novel begins, Tan
introduces the story with a brief prologue about a Shanghai women and her swan. Her prior
expectations before coming to America was crushed entirely by the reality she later encounters. The
woman sworn to give her American raised daughter the swan feather and tell her [the story] in

Spring break of my junior year, I attended a leadership camp called RYLA (Rotary Youth
Leadership Awards). My dad was the president of rotary at the time so I pretty much didn t have
an option in going. I wasn t too excited about spending my spring break at a leadership camp with
weirdos I didn t know. The camp site was up in the mountains of Ojai so we had to leave my house
pretty early. My dad had to stop and pick up some kids from my school that were also going. When

Trees at the Arctic Circle. In the poem Trees at the Arctic circle , the author Al Purdy provides a
description of dwarf plants that manage to grow above the tree line on Baffin Island, a Canadian
territory. The topics of this poem are very mundane as he uses different types of trees to illustrate
truths about the human condition, and in particular about life in the Arctic.
However, Purdy s true goal is to remind the reader that humans are judgmental creatures and that it
is only once you take a closer look at the scene in front of you that you are forced to acknowledge a
hidden truth. The author muses aloud as he drastically evolves through a range of emotions:

Now that he has reconsidered the matter he is not afraid to admit he was wrong to look for
weaknesses before strengths.
This last stanza uses more elevated language to express more complicated emotions such as awe,
humility and repentance. The early verses express simple anger in simple terms. This last stanza
differs noticeably from the first two in the language it uses and the sentiments it expresses. To
start off he admits he has made a mistake I see that I ve been carried away l.43. This is the first
time he uses a 1st person narrative. It helps the reader believe he is sincere. The poet adopts a
humbled tone when he expresses embarrassment at his earlier attack on the coward trees and feels
ashamed: foolish in my judgments l.46. Instead of denying his previous statements he takes
responsibility for them.
In addition, the expression Pontifux Maximus of nullity l.52 53 shows how useless it is to write
poems, with the aid of both obsolete and didactic language. But, the statement itself is a paradox.
The fact that the pontifux maximus , which translates to the pope, a worldwide leader consulted
for his wisdom, is now useless is contradictory. The reader now understands that some things need
to be overlooked. For example, in this case concrete concepts such as words in a poem should not

Company, which is located in New York city, New York, brings a collection of stories of the
founding fathers together to create the story of the American Revloution. The thesis of the book is
arguably that the American Revolutionmay never have happened without the mishaps of the Boston
Tea Party, which in turn created a collection of colonial leaders. Rakove s book, in the early
chapters, focus on Samuel and John Adams, John Dickinson, and George Washington. The later
sections talk about the trio of key party leaders in the early Republic: Jefferson, Madison, and
Hamilton. Throughout, we are introduced to less commonly know people: Henry Laurens, Jack
Laurens, Arthur Lee and George Mason The account of the first part of Revolutionaries is one we
all learn in elementary school: no taxation without representation and the Boston Tea Party. We re
too comfortable with this period, or at least with how we know it: the characters and the events
have the well worn quality that comes from being handled too much. Benjamin Franklinwith his
