Goldwind is leveraging its expertise in wind turbines to develop microgrid solutions using renewable energy sources like wind and solar, along with energy storage technologies. It has installed microgrids at industrial parks and desalination plants in China. One microgrid uses a 2.5MW wind turbine, solar PV, batteries, and a diesel generator connected to an energy management system. Another site doubled its desalination capacity by expanding its microgrid with a 2.5MW wind turbine and batteries. Goldwind aims to continue installing more advanced microgrid systems using its control technologies.
New York’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative seeks to fundamentally transform the way electricity is distributed, generated and used across the State. Utilities are being challenged to adapt their business models and distribution infrastructure to meet these new goals. REV also presents an opportunity for utilities to provide their customers with a broader range of services that lead to a more diverse, innovative and resilient energy infrastructure.
A key focus of REV is the transition to local distributed energy platforms including microgrids, which can be operated in conjunction with the grid or independently in emergencies. TRC recentlypresented an educational webinar to help New York’s utilities and other decision makers take action to plan and implement successful microgrids. This presentation covers:
• Basic concepts for developing a microgrid
• Differences from operating within the conventional grid
• Preliminary engineering steps required
• Options for generation sources

The energy sector is moving into the era of distributed generation (DG) and microgrids
(MGs). The stability and operation aspects of converter-dominated DG MGs, however, are faced by
many challenges. To overcome these difficulties, this paper presents a new large-signal-based control
topology for DG power converters that is suitable for both grid connected and islanding modes of
operation without any need to reconfigure the control system and without islanding detection. To
improve MG stability and to guarantee stability and high performance of the MG system during sudden
harsh transients such as islanding, grid reconnection, and large load power changes, a nonlinear MG
stabilizer is proposed. We propose a novel control topology for microgrids which can work in both grid
connected and islanding modes without reconfiguration so it does not require islanding detection
technique, the controller is based on the concept of synchronverter In this paper, a radical step is taken
to improve the synchronverter as a self-synchronized synchronverter by removing the dedicated

microgrid could be defined as a part of the grid with elements like distributed energy sources, power electronics converters, energy storage devices and controllable local loads that could operate autonomously islanded but also interacting with the main power network in a controlled, coordinated way. Following the introduction of distributed control of these elements, cooperative control and hierarchical control schemes for coordination of the power electronics converters in order to control the power flow and to enhance the power quality will be elaborated. The focus will be on the analysis, modelling, and control design of power electronics based microgrids as well as power electronics control and communications. Further, the interconnection of microgrid clusters will be emphasized as an important step towards utilization of the Smartgrid concept.
Microgrid & renewable integration at burbank water & powerSchneider Electric
This presentation reviews Schneider Electric's collaboration avec Burbank Water and Power, a cutting-edge utility company in Burbank, California, to achieve challenging renewable energy requirements and provide reliable, safe, and affordable power to its customers using advanced technology solutions.
To prepare for increased renewable energy requirements, Burbank Water and Power sought a system to manage load, distributed energy resources, distributed storage systems, generation, and variable renewables in order to balance supply and demand and avoid undesirable voltage, power flow, and power quality problems. Burbank’s Integrated Automated Dispatch System (ADS) includes Schneider Electric’s advanced Power Control System (PCS) - for automatic generator control, load forecasting, and renewable forecasting - integrated with Schneider Electric’s OASyS SCADA and WeatherSentry system. The Integrated ADS will allow Burbank to co-optimize scheduling and dispatch of conventional supply resources, distributed generation, and demand-side resources, enable better control of inadvertent interchanges, and reduce reliance on external generation. Through the Integrated ADS, Burbank’s system operators will be able to manage the available system resources to optimize system reliability while achieving the most economic and sustainable energy supply portfolio.
MicroGrid and Energy Storage System COMPLETE DETAILS NEW PPT Abin Baby
A microgrid is a localized grouping of electricity generation, energy storage, and loads that normally operates connected to a traditional centralized grid (macrogrid). This single point of common coupling with the macrogrid can be disconnected. The microgrid can then function autonomously. Generation and loads in a microgrid are usually interconnected at low voltage. From the point of view of the grid operator, a connected microgrid can be controlled as if it were one entity.
Microgrid generation resources can include fuel cells, wind, solar, or other energy sources. The multiple dispersed generation sources and ability to isolate the microgrid from a larger network would provide highly reliable electric power. Produced heat from generation sources such as micro turbines could be used for local process heating or space heating, allowing flexible trade off between the needs for heat and electric power.

The energy industry is rapidly evolving to take advantage of renewable resources and Western Power is embracing new technologies that will improve service and reliability to our customers. New and improving technologies such as solar, wind, wave and most importantly batteries are changing the way we think about the delivery and storage of electricity. One of these developments is the microgrid, which is essentially a small scale power grid that can operate independently (in ‘island mode’) or connect with the main electrical grid – think of a small suburb, or estate, that shares electricity and the cost of the infrastructure. A microgrid needs to control the flow of electricity of low or medium voltage, but does not need connection to a centralised generation or transmission network. Western Power has trialled the world’s first microgrid project that combines wave energy, solar (photovoltaic) energy, a desalination plant, and energy storage that connects to our large electricity network.
