Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.

Climate Science Flows: Enabling Petabyte-Scale Climate Analysis with the Eart...Globus
The Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF) is a global network of data servers that archives and distributes the planet’s largest collection of Earth system model output for thousands of climate and environmental scientists worldwide. Many of these petabyte-scale data archives are located in proximity to large high-performance computing (HPC) or cloud computing resources, but the primary workflow for data users consists of transferring data, and applying computations on a different system. As a part of the ESGF 2.0 US project (funded by the United States Department of Energy Office of Science), we developed pre-defined data workflows, which can be run on-demand, capable of applying many data reduction and data analysis to the large ESGF data archives, transferring only the resultant analysis (ex. visualizations, smaller data files). In this talk, we will showcase a few of these workflows, highlighting how Globus Flows can be used for petabyte-scale climate analysis.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

Quarkus Hidden and Forbidden ExtensionsMax Andersen
Quarkus has a vast extension ecosystem and is known for its subsonic and subatomic feature set. Some of these features are not as well known, and some extensions are less talked about, but that does not make them less interesting - quite the opposite.
Come join this talk to see some tips and tricks for using Quarkus and some of the lesser known features, extensions and development techniques.
3. Getting started with Paint
Paint is a feature in
Windows that you can
use to draw, color, and
edit pictures. You can
use Paint like a digital
sketchpad to make
simple pictures,
creative projects, or to
add text and designs to
other pictures, such as
those taken with your
digital camera.
4. The parts of Paint
When you start Paint,
you'll see an empty
window; drawing and
painting tools are
located in the Ribbon
at the top of the
window. The following
illustration shows the
different parts of the
Paint window:
5. Working with tools
The Ribbon in Paint includes a handy collection of drawing tools.
You can use these tools to create freehand drawings and add a
variety of shapes to your pictures.
This section describes some common tasks. For more detailed
information on how to use the different tools in Paint
6. Draw a line
Some tools and shapes, such as the Pencil, Brush, Line, and
Curve, let you make a variety of straight, curved, and squiggly
lines. What you draw is determined by how you move the
mouse as you draw. You can use the Line to draw a straight
line, for example.
1. On the Home tab, in the Shapes group, click the Line .
2. In the Colors group, click Color 1, and then click the color you
want to use.
3. To draw, drag the pointer across the drawing area.
7. Draw a squiggly line
Your drawings don't have to be composed of only straight lines.
The Pencil and Brushes can be used to make completely
random, free-form shapes.
1. On the Home tab, in the Tools group, click the Pencil tool .
2. In the Colors group, click Color 1, and then click the color you
want to use.
3. To draw, drag the pointer across the drawing area and make a
squiggly line.
8. Draw a shape
Paint lets you draw many different shapes. For example, you can draw
ready-made, defined shapes such as rectangles, circles, squares,
triangles, and arrows . You can also make your own custom shape
by using the Polygon shape .
On the Home tab, in the Shapes group, click a ready-made shape, such as the
Rectangle .
To add a ready-made shape, drag the pointer across the drawing area to make
the shape.
To change the outline style, in the Shapes group, click Outline, and then click
an outline style.
In the Colors group, click Color 1, and then click a color for the outline.
In the Colors group, click Color 2, and then click a color to use to fill the shape.
To change the fill style, in the Shapes group, click Fill, and then click a fill style.
10. Add text
You can also add text to your picture. The Text tool lets you add a
simple message or title.
On the Home tab, in the Tools group, click the Text tool .
Drag the pointer in the drawing area where you want to add
text.
Under Text Tools, on the Text tab, click the font face, size, and
style in the Font group.
In the Colors group, click Color 1, and then click a color. This is
the text color.
Type the text that you want to add
12. Erase part of your picture
If you make a mistake or need to change part of a picture, use the
eraser. By default, the eraser changes any area you erase to
white, but you can change the eraser color. For example, if you
set the background color to yellow, anything you erase turns to
yellow.
On the Home tab, in the Tools group, click the Eraser tool .
In the Colors group, click Color 2, and then click the color that
you want to erase with. If you want to erase with white, you
don't have to select a color.
Drag the pointer over the area you want to erase.
14. Drawing different shapes in Paint
You can use Paint to add different shapes in a picture. The ready-
made shapes range from traditional shapes—rectangles,
ellipses, triangles, and arrows—to fun and unusual shapes,
such as a heart, lightning bolt, or callouts (to name a few). If
you want to make your own custom shape, you can use to the
Polygon tool to do this.
15. Work faster in Paint
There's a fast way to put the commands you use most often in
Paint in easy reach—put them on the Quick Access Toolbar
above the Ribbon.
To add a Paint command to the Quick Access Toolbar, right-click
a button or command, and then click Add to Quick Access
Toolbar
17. Crop a picture by using Paint
If you're not satisfied with the way a picture was composed with
the camera, you can use Paint to crop the photo to improve its
composition or to focus on certain elements in it.
On the Home tab, in the Image group, click Select.
Click and drag to select the element you want to keep in the
picture, and then click Crop.
Click the Paint button , point to Save as, and then click the
picture file type for the cropped picture.
19. Working with color
There are a number of tools to help you work specifically with
color in Paint. They let you use the colors you want when
you're drawing and editing in Paint.
Color boxes
The Color boxes indicate the current Color 1 (foreground color)
and Color 2 (background color) colors. How they're used
depends on what you're doing in Paint.
21. Saving a picture
Save your picture frequently so you don't accidentally lose your work.
To save, click the Paint button , and then click Save. This
saves all of the changes made to the picture since the last time you
saved.
1. Click the Paint button , and then click Save.
2. In the Save as type box, select the file format you want.
3. In the File name box, type a name, and then click Save.
