• Odoacer invades Italy and kills the last Roman
emperor Romulus Augustus, pronouncing himself

Roman army and later defeat other tribes
(including the Visigoths) and other small kingdoms
eventually creating the first Frankish Kingdom.

France in the Battle of Tours. This successfully
prevented the spread of Islam into Western Europe.

• Pepin the Short, the son of Charles Martel, requested
that Pope Zacharias recognize him as the king and the
Pope agrees. He becomes the first Frankish king with
a papal blessing.

• Pepin defeats the Lombards and captures Ravenna.
He leaves the territories to the Pope, founding the
Papal states.

814, the areas and people he conquered included the
Lombards, the Saxons, Bavaria, the Avars, and Barcelona.

• Pope Leo III crowns Charlemagne on Christmas
Day, signifying the Popes power over the crown.

• Alfred the Great creates a system of government and
educations that unifies the Anglo-Saxon states and
codifies English law.
