the Empire which he felt he deserved as
dowry for marrying the emperors sister.

• At the request of the murder of Emperor
Valentinian III, Vandal leader Geiseric sacks Rome
and carries off the widow and her daughters.

• Odoacer invades Italy and kills the last Roman
emperor Romulus Augustus, pronouncing himself
the ruler of Italy.

• Led by Clovis, the Franks defeat the last major
Roman army and later defeat other tribes
(including the Visigoths) and other small kingdoms
eventually creating the first Frankish Kingdom.

• Clovis converts the Franks to Catholicism after a
battle in which was only won after he cried out
to God for help.

• The Franks battle and conquer several
kingdoms. This includes the
Thuringians, Burgundians, the Province, and the
Bavarians.

• The Muslims invade and capture southern Spain,
Narbonne, and Carcassonne.

• Charles Martel “The Hammer” defeats the Moors in
France in the Battle of Tours. This successfully
prevented the spread of Islam into Western Europe.

• Pepin the Short, the son of Charles Martel, requested
that Pope Zacharias recognize him as the king and the
Pope agrees. He becomes the first Frankish king with
a papal blessing.
756
• Pepin defeats the Lombards and captures Ravenna.
He leaves the territories to the Pope, founding the
Papal states.

• The conquests of Charlemagne begin. By his death in
814, the areas and people he conquered included the
Lombards, the Saxons, Bavaria, the Avars, and Barcelona.

• Vikings begin attacks on England.
800
• Pope Leo III crowns Charlemagne on Christmas
Day, signifying the Popes power over the crown.
871-899
• Alfred the Great creates a system of government and
educations that unifies the Anglo-Saxon states and
codifies English law.

• Viking Chief Rollo forms a treaty with King Charles.
Rollo converts to Christianity and is granted Charles
daughters hand and land that would become
Normandy, France.

• Otto the Great defeats Hungarians and is titled
Emperor of Rome.

• Erik the Great Discovers Greenland.
