Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to form on nerve tissues. There are two main types, NF1 and NF2. Symptoms can include café au lait spots, learning disabilities, bone deformities, pain, numbness, and trouble sleeping. NF is caused by mutations on chromosomes 17 and 22 that result in uncontrolled cell growth. It is usually diagnosed during a physical exam and may require eye, ear, imaging and genetic testing. Treatments include surgery, medication to manage symptoms, and lifelong monitoring due to risks of neurological problems, cancer and other complications. Support groups like the Children's Tumor Foundation provide resources for patients and their families.
St. Thomas Aquinas was a 13th century philosopher, priest, and saint. He was born in 1225 in Italy and studied at the University of Naples before joining the Dominican order of monks. His family opposed this and imprisoned him for a year, but he remained committed to his beliefs. He went on to teach theology at the University of Paris and wrote two major works, the Summa Theologica and Summa contra Gentiles, establishing his influence on Western philosophy.
Leo III became Byzantine emperor in 717 and faced many challenges during his reign. He organized Constantinople's defenses against Arab attacks and secured important military alliances. Leo also fought to prevent Islamic influence in the Byzantine Empire, forcibly resettling many Eastern Christians. Most significantly, he began the Iconoclastic controversy in 730 by banning religious images and persecuting their worshippers, which divided the Empire and hurt its relations with Rome. Leo reorganized the military and issued new legal codes before passing the empire to his son upon his death in 741 after a long reign of consolidating Byzantine defenses and power.
The document traces the early growth and spread of Christianity from AD 30 to AD 284. It notes that by AD 50-58, Paul had spread Christianity to Turkey and Greece and wrote many letters. Persecution of Christians diminished under the Roman emperor Nerva around AD 96-98.
The document outlines the 7 Christian sacraments: Baptism cleanses original sin and begins the Christian life. Holy Eucharist/Communion accepts Christ's body through bread and wine. Confession allows one to speak to a priest and receive forgiveness for sins. Confirmation strengthens one with the Holy Spirit. Holy Matrimony publicly unites a married couple before God. Holy Orders allows one to become clergy. Anointing of the Sick strengthens the sick with blessed oil.
Islam originated in the Arabian Peninsula in 622 CE under the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Central beliefs include the strict monotheistic worship of Allah as the one true God and creator of all things. The Quran is the sacred text of Islam and Muhammad is revered as the final prophet, though not divine. After Muhammad's death, the early Muslim empire expanded through military conquests across the Middle East and North Africa, though the means of spreading Islamic faith and allowing other religions is debated.
The document provides a timeline of major events during the Germanic invasions between 406 and 962 CE. It describes how tribes like the Vandals and Visigoths conquered parts of the Western Roman Empire in the early 5th century. It then outlines the rise and expansion of Frankish power under Clovis and Charlemagne, as well as Viking invasions starting in the late 8th century. The timeline ends with Otto the Great being crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 962.
