Liberia is located on the western coast of Africa. It was founded in 1821 as the first African country established by the United States to be a home for freed African American slaves. Liberia has a population of around 4 million people, most of whom live below the poverty line given that it is one of the poorest countries in the world. The capital and largest city is Monrovia, and English is the official language. Popular tourist destinations include Monrovia, Careysburg, Blo Degbo Rock, Providence Island, and Mount Nimba.
