Vector Tiles with GeoServer and OpenLayers
The latest release of GeoServer adds support for creating Vector Tiles in GeoJSON, TopoJSON, and MapBox Vector Tiles format through its WMS service for all the vector data formats it supports. These tiles can be cached using GeoWebCache (built into GeoServer), and served with the various tiling protocols (TMS, WMTS, and WMS-C). Thanks to very recent OpenLayers 3 development, these Vector Tiles can be easily and efficiently styled on a map.
This technical talk will look at how GeoServer makes Vector Tiles accessible through standard OGC services and how they differ from normal WMS and WFS usage. It will also look at how OpenLayers 3 - as a simple-to-use vector tiles client - interacts with GeoServer to retrieve tiles and effectively manage and style them. OpenLayer 3’s extensive style infrastructure will be investigated.

Internet-enabled GIS Using Free and Open Source Tools
Internet-enabled GIS can be developed using free and open source tools like MapServer, GeoServer, TileCache, and OpenLayers. Open source GIS software allows data and applications to be freely shared, adapted, and improved by a community. Pre-rendering map tiles improves rendering speed compared to generating maps from source data for each request. The open source GIS community collaborates to build and enhance software and data.
Creating Stunning Maps in GeoServer: mastering SLD and CSS styles
Various software can style maps and generate a proper SLD document for OGC compliant WMS like GeoServer to use. However, in most occasions, the styling allowed by the graphical tools is pretty limited and not good enough to achieve good looking, readable and efficient cartographic output. For those that like to write their own styles CSS also represents a nice alternatives thanks to its compactness and expressiveness.
Several topics will be covered, providing examples in both SLD and CSS for each, including: mastering multi-scale styling, using GeoServer extensions to build common hatch patterns, line styling beyond the basics, such as cased lines, controlling symbols along a line and the way they repeat, leveraging TTF symbol fonts and SVGs to generate good looking point thematic maps, using the full power of GeoServer label lay-outing tools to build pleasant, informative maps on both point, polygon and line layers, including adding road plates around labels, leverage the labeling subsystem conflict resolution engine to avoid overlaps in stand alone point symbology, blending charts into a map, dynamically transform data during rendering to get more explicative maps without the need to pre-process a large amount of views.
The presentation aims to provide the attendees with enough information to master SLD/CSS documents and most of GeoServer extensions to generate appealing, informative, readable maps that can be quickly rendered on screen.

State of GeoServer 2.10
- GeoServer is an open source Java web application for sharing geospatial data. It publishes data from any major spatial data source using open standards like WMS, WFS, WCS, and WPS.
- The GeoServer team has 13 releases in 2016 with a focus on maintenance and technical debt. New features include improved raster data support, styling enhancements, and configuration changes.
- Looking ahead, focus areas include vector data improvements, raster optimizations, maintenance, and improving support for newer Java versions and standards.
Mastering Security with GeoServer and GeoFence - FOSS4G EU 2017
The presentation will provide an introduction to GeoServer own authentication and authorization subsystems. We’ll cover the supported authentication protocols, such as from basic/digest authentication and CAS support, check through the various identity providers, such as local config files, database tables and LDAP servers, and how it’s possible to combine the various bits in a single comprehensive authentication tool, as well as providing examples of custom authentication plugins for GeoServer, integrating it in a home grown security architecture. We’ll then move on to authorization, describing the GeoServer pluggable authorization mechanism and comparing it with proxy based solution, and check the built in service and data security system, reviewing its benefits and limitations. Finally we’ll explore the advanced authentication provider, GeoFence, explore the levels on integration with GeoServer, from the simple and seamless direct integration to the more sophisticated external setup, and see how it can provide GeoServer with complex authorization rules over data and OGC services, taking into account the current user, OGC request and requested layers to enforce spatial filters and alphanumeric filters, attribute selection as well as cropping raster data to areas of interest.
Comparing free software for spatial DBMSs
In the following presentation three popular freeware spatial DBMSs (PostgreSQL/PostGIS, SpatiaLite, MySQL) are briefly compared. Recommendations for choosing between them in relation to the pecularities of assigned task are given. Gluster.next feb-2016
Gluster.Next is an architectural evolution of the Gluster storage platform spanning multiple releases to improve scalability, flexibility, and management. Key changes include distributed hash tables to improve directory operations, server-side replication for flexibility and flash utilization, sharding to spread data blocks, and GlusterD2 for modularity and REST interfaces. These changes will enable storage as a service and platform capabilities at massive scales of thousands of nodes. The first phase debuts in Gluster 3.8 and the full vision in Gluster 4.0 to support new workloads like containers and hyperconverged environments.

GeoPackage is the modern alternative to formats like SDTS and Shapefile. At it’s core, GeoPackage is simply a SQLite database schema. If you know SQLite, you are close to knowing GeoPackage. Install Spatialite – the premiere spatial extention to SQLite – and you get all the performance of a spatial database along with the convenience of a file-based data set that can be emailed, shared on a USB drive or burned to a DVD.
A ‘context document’ specifies a fully configured service set which can be exchanged (with a consistent interpretation) among clients supporting the standard. The OGC Web Services Context Document (OWS Context) was created to allow a set of configured information resources (service set) to be passed between applications primarily as a collection of services. OWS Context is developed to support in-line content as well. The goal is to support use cases such as the distribution of search results, the exchange of a set of resources such as OGC Web Feature Service (WFS), Web Map Service (WMS), Web Map Tile Service (WMTS), Web Coverage Service (WCS) and others in a ‘common operating picture’. Additionally OWS Context can deliver a set of configured processing services (Web Processing Service (WPS)) parameters to allow the processing to be reproduced on different nodes.

The Java Advanced Imaging is a powerful Java image processing engine underlines our popular OSGeo open source projects - including GeoTools, GeoServer, GeoNetwork, and GeoNode, and more! Tragically there has been one problem with this, the JAI library is not open source!
The library originated at Sun Microsystem as a core component of the Java Runtime Environment, but was not included as part of OpenJDK collaboration.

Why geoserver

PostGIS allows integrating geographic data into web and desktop applications and is used successfully in various real-world GIS projects and systems.

Developers are moving away from their host-based patterns and adopting a new mindset around the idea that the datacenter is the computer. It?s quickly becoming a mainstream model that you can view a warehouse full of servers as a single computer (with terabytes of memory and tens of thousands of cores). There is a key missing piece, which is an operating system for the datacenter (DCOS), which would provide the same OS functionality and core OS abstractions across thousands of machines that an OS provides on a single machine today. In this session, we will discuss:
How the abstraction of an OS has evolved over time and can cleanly scale to spand thousands of machines in a datacenter.
How key open source technologies like the Apache Mesos distributed systems kernel provide the key underpinnings for a DCOS.
How developers can layer core system services on top of a distributed systems kernel, including an init system (Marathon), cron (Chronos), service discovery (DNS), and storage (HDFS)
What would the interface to the DCOS look like? How would you use it?

GIS User to Web-GIS Developer Journey
This document provides a proposed two month plan for transitioning from a GIS user to a web-GIS developer. The plan involves four main steps: 1) learning basic GIS concepts, 2) developing frontend web applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript and the Leaflet mapping library, 3) implementing a map server using GeoServer to serve web map services, and 4) developing the backend using Python/Django and PostGIS. Common problems beginners face are outlined, such as trying to learn too many technologies at once. Resources are recommended for each step to help with the learning process.

The geoserver-rest and pySLD are the open-source python packages for management of geospatial data. These packages make the webGIS development work easy.
Geonode introduction
GeoNode is an open-source geospatial content management system that allows users to easily upload, share, and work with spatial data in the same way one blogs. It provides a framework for publishing and sharing spatial data through a public Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) by allowing users to upload data, style it, add backgrounds and map widgets. This makes sharing and publishing spatial data very simple through the SDI. GeoNode is a web-based application that can be used to develop web GIS systems and deploy SDIs using an open-source stack of Python, Django, GeoServer, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, and additional catalog and viewer applications.

LRIMS Introduction • LRIMS is the web-GIS portal • Developed for land resource information management and Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZ) to support agricultural policies and climate change adaption in the country. • It is a collaboration between The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand. • The portal has 6000+ raster layers (each having around 100mb) and 100 vector layers. • The LRIMS web-portal is available here at https://lrimsfaoaf.ait.ac.th/
