  • 2. At A Glance… • The Coke story begins in 1886, Atlanta, Georgia USA • John Pemberton, a chemist, seeks a remedy for his addiction to morphine. He begins to experiment with kola nut and cola wine additives. • He gets it right and brews the first batch of Cocoa – Cola in his backyard. • After selling his new product at the Jacob’s Pharmacy soda fountain, it becomes an instant hit. • He later sells the business.
  • 3. Development Over Time The brain-child of a Civil War veteran in 1886 New management in 1892 by American Asa Candler Expansion of the business in the 1930s Depression Era. Billionth Gallon of Coke sold in 1944 1985-Onwards: A new formula and offices in over 200 nations

Rationale Why would coke choose to promote, sell and advertise in so many nations? • Maximises their profit margin with a larger consumer audience. • Promotes trade and relations across nations • Gives an economic boost towards the soft drink industry • Increases global awareness of the American label • Job creation and economic certainty for developing nations.

Worker Rights and Liberties • Coke has been criticised over 179 documented cases of racial discrimination in the US, bottling plant murders in Mexico and even negotiation with paramilitary forces in South America. • Organisations such as ‘Killer Coke’ have responded to such alleged violations. • Coke has responded with its version of the United Nation Declaration of Human Right and claims, ‘The reputation of the Coke is build on trust and respect’.
