This document describes the biomechanics of human gait. It discusses the gait cycle, phases of gait including stance and swing phases. It describes the principal events and static positions that occur during each of the 8 phases of the gait cycle. Additional topics covered include distance and temporal variables, determinants of gait, and efficiency considerations. Gait involves transferring the body's center of gravity over each leg during locomotion in a pendulum-like motion to minimize energy expenditure.
