Introduction
• The word frustration has been derived
from a Latin word ‘frustra’ meaning
‘obstructs’.
Definition
• Frustration refers to the blocking of
behavior directed towards the goal.
• Frustration means emotional tension
resulting from the blocking of a desire or
need.(Good, carter V)
Characteristics of frustration
• Unpleasant emotional state
• failure dominates the attempts.
• Experiences obstacle in the satisfaction of ones
basic needs or goals.
• The significance of the goal and strength of the
blockade increases the degree of frustration.
• The cause lies both in the individual himself and
his environment.

External factors (environmental factors)
• Physical factors: natural calamities, obstacle in environment to
reach a goal, environmental situations or conditions, which we
can not control.
• Ex.- a contagious, death of a friend or a beloved relative.
• Social factors:
• Conflict with other people
• Customs
• Traditions
• Restrictions
• Taboos
• Laws
• Economic factors:
• Financial problem
Internal factors
• Physical abnormality or defects
• Conflict of motives within the individual.
• The individual’s morality and high ideals.
• High level of aspirations.
• Lack of persistence and sincerity in efforts.
Reactions to frustration
• increasing trial or improving trial
• Changing the goal to one that is more attainable.
• Adopt to compromising means.
• Restlessness and tension
• Direct and indirect Aggression
• Apathy
• Fantasy
• Stereotype

Resolution of frustration
• Identify the causes and try to change or control it,
learn to accept it.
• Check everything before taking a decision.
• Review the situation again.
• Change our goals or modify our desires.
• Substitute our goals by others, which are equally
satisfying but are different and achievable.
• Seek advice from experts, parents, relatives or
friends.
• Encourage full expression of positive and negative
feelings within an accepting atmosphere.
• Avoid hesitancy
