between preserving original, historic buildings, and creating functional additions for them. Additions
play a very important role in structures today; serving to work with what already exists while
accommodating changing functional requirements and aesthetic tastes. They seek to maintain the
original building s character, while becoming compatible with new design. The Vogelstein Center for
Drama and Film at Vassar College, an addition to the façade of Avery Hall, designed by Cesar Pelli in

Prior to the addition, Ferry House challenged Vassar s preexisting architectural notions, being the first
modern building of its kind. In relation to surrounding buildings, Sanders Physics and Main Building,
Ferry is a misfit. However, upon completion of the Vogelstein addition, this section of campus was
transformed. The dark and light gray striped pattern addition fares well with the white painted brick of
Ferry House. The varying width of these stripes is representative of the contemporary nature the
architect was trying to further, similar to the rectangular shapes present on Ferry. Vogelstein s stark
burnt orange overhang again mirrors the style of Ferry building. The concrete masonry stands out not
only against the façade, but also against Vassar s many other brick buildings. These two adjacent
buildings share a common courtyard, known as the Frances Daly Fergusson Quadrangle, a venue for
outdoor theatrics. This minimalist courtyard serves to create a flow between the two buildings. This
addition meets demands for modernization, relatable to the Loeb Art Center and the upcoming science

My Day At High School
The idea came upon me late on a Sunday night in early February. An idea that me and my buddies
from high school need one last get together before the end of the semester. Yes, the end of the
semester is not for another 2 months, but many of my friends go to a variety of different colleges
which means many different weeks of spring break. I realized that this would be our last chance
together so let s go home this weekend and get together. We ran with the idea. We all found ways back
