The Effects Of Restorative Justice On Juvenile Recidivism
Literature Review
Current research available on the effects of restorative justice on juvenile recidivism range from meta
analyses of multiple studies to individual program studies. According to Bradshaw and Roseborough
(2005), The use of meta analytic methods provides a useful means for summarizing diverse research
findings across restorative justice studies and synthesizing these findings in an objective manner. (p.
19). Four meta analytic studies reveal an overall reduction in juvenile recidivism (Bradshaw and
Roseborough 2005; Bradshaw, Roseborough, Umbreit, 2006; Latimer, Dowden, Muise, 2005; Wong,
Bouchard, Gravel, Bouchard, Morselli, 2016).

The results of this meta analysis were similar to the others. Wong et al. (2016) reported a positive
result in the overall effectiveness of restorative justice on juvenile recidivism. Data analysis revealed
12 out of the 21 studies had a statistically significant effect size of lowered recidivism of restorative
justice participants compared to juveniles in the traditional justice system (Wong et al., 2016).
Latimer, Dowden, and Muise (2005) showed comparable results of the effectiveness of restorative
justice programs by conducting a meta analysis. 22 studies were collected through a comprehensive
literature search and experts were consulted to reveal any unpublished research pertitnant to the effects
of the restorative justice program, VOM on juvenile recidivism (Latimer et al., 2005). The outcome
measures for this study focused on recidivism, along with restitution compliance and victim and
offender satisfaction (Latimer et al., 2005). Juveniles that participated in each study were assigned to
either VOM groups or traditional justice comparison groups. The overall results of the meta analysis
showed a positive effect size of .07 on juvenile recidivism (Latimer et al., 2005).
Another meta analysis that focused on victim offender mediation was by performed by Bradshaw and
Roseborough, along with Umbreit (2006). This meta analysis consisted of 15 studies with 9,172
juvenile offenders, from 21

Shanzhai! MediaTek and White Box Handset Market
Issue Identification
MediaTek Company is a large global chipset supplier in wireless handset market. More than half of
the chipsets are selling to shanzhai market like China or South Asia. Shanzhai means illegal
counterfeits or knock offs . Over the last 30 years, the company had great success through this target
market. However, the CEO of the company Ming Kai Tsai was in a dilemma. He wants to get more
opportunities for the company s further growth. The primary problem is whether they should serve tire
one companies like Nokia, Motorola or Samsung instead of focus on shanzhai market. The secondary
problem they faced is the company s image and the ethical concern. The ... Show more content on

Threat of Substitution (High to Medium) Threat of substitution does exist for MediaTek because they
are aimed at the 2G mobile phone market, thus consumers can switch at any time to the high end 3G
market. The 3G technology that is offered by many other companies allows consumers to have a much
faster product without having to incur a huge price increase. With customers being able to switch
markets very easily MediaTek does face a relatively high threat of substitution.
Bargaining Power of Suppliers (Low) Bargaining power of suppliers is very low because MediaTek
produces the chipsets themselves and therefore they are the suppliers in the mobile phone industry.
MediaTek is a very well established company, which means they are quite rare in regards to the
supplier industry.
Bargaining Power of Buyers (Medium to Low) MediaTek is one of the only companies who are apply
to supply chipsets in the Chinese 2G mobile phone Market, so in terms of this bargaining power of
buyers is relatively low because consumers don t have various other suppliers they can purchase from.
On the other hand bargaining power of buyers is high to medium in a sense that consumers can easily
switch from the low end product which is what MediaTek offers to the high end 3G mobile phone
product. After analyzing Shanzhai! MediaTek

The Reign Of Peter The Great
The reign of Peter the Great has been a source of considerable historical debate for many
contemporary and traditional historians. Especially, the transformation he made to Russian culture,
politics and economic, which arguably changed the foundations of society. Thus, the interval of some
three hundred years has allowed us to access Peter the Great s reforms more accurately but we must
consider that Russia during the late 17th century existed in different ethical and social circumstances
to our own contemporary society as to make it almost a foreign civilisation. Judgements about Peter
the Great using today s political and moral perspectives may have to be tempered unless we are
accused of historical and cultural relativism. Therefore, we must be careful in analysing the impact
that his many reforms caused and the lasting nature that they had on the very foundations of Russian
society.
Through his reign Peter revolutionised his country, reorganizing and strengthening the state and army,
conquering new territories and building new navy, a seaport, and a new capital in St. Petersburg 1. The
most significant change, Bushkovitch argues, was his campaign of Europeanisating Russia s culture
which saw the introduction of all forms of Western advancements emerge into the society and by
1725, Russia had achieved the aim of entering on the European stage. The ultimate objective was to at
least equal if not surpass other European states while joining them in their great power

The Media Controversy
The news has a responsibility to provide accurate information to the American people. However,
journalists are only human, and it is important to take note of any biases present in their writing. W.L.
Bennett is one scholar who addressed this concern, arguing that journalism has four main media
biases: personalization, dramatization, fragmentation, and authority disorder bias (Bennett, 2012).
While Bennett voices concerns of adverse consequences, scholars Ozen Bas and Maria Elizabeth
Grabe argue that biases like personalization can help people with lower education levels retain
information better (Bas Grabe, 2015). Referencing two news clips and an article, this essay argues that
media biases rampant across platforms have good intent to get ... Show more content on

The news clip is under one minute, and shows clips of the teacher high fiving his students before
entering the classroom, while the journalists are smiling at the story. While the story is about a teacher
from North Carolina, the fragmentation is present of the brevity of the content. One possible
explanation could be from Bennett s statement on fragmentation, which he argues is normally the
result of time constraints (Bennett, News Content: Four information biases that matter, 2012). With
that in mind, this clip was perhaps used to fill in time and provide a quick human interest story,
something to make viewers feel good as they start their day. This, however, leaves a lot to be asked,
such as what type of community exists in the school, what do parents think about it, and if there were

A threat is anything that represents a risk to information property. There are many several threats that
represent a persistent danger to people and organizations information assets. In this report, I will cover

A Security threat is any form of security violations that may include any of the following: viruses,

Computer ethics are set of a good ethical principle that control the usage of computers. One of the
basic ethic missed by numerous among computer ethics is violation of copyright issues. Plagiarism is
one of the significant types of academic dishonesty which has always existed in education. For
example, assignments submitted by students may turn out to be copied from associate students or
could be taken over, in part or in whole, from existing published works. Also, break copyright and
software theft. For example, throughout the society, it is well known that the illegal copying of
copyrighted media (texts, music works, movies and software programs) is widespread. Furthermore,
many people who engage in such activity do not consider themselves to be doing something that is
immoral. Therefore, students and staff may have authorized access to computer resources, but then go
on to use these resources improperly. They may have a school/library Internet account, or they may
use computer system or computer network or computer software that is owned by the school, or they
may use computerized services given by the school, and do too in a way that does not meet the school

The End Game Content Of Diablo 3
A Long Journey
The end game content of Diablo 3 has changed a lot since the game was first released way back in
2012, and the steps taken have been progressive with regards to making the inevitable grind for late
game gear less painstaking and more enjoyable. Rifts and bounties have provided clear cut goals at the
late game stage, and the introduction of the enchanter eased the pain of the never ending quest that is
the perfectly rolled drop.
Now, season 4 has arrived, and the people still fighting their way up the seasonal ladder and clutching
at achievement points have a treat in store, with the massive patch 2.3.0 bringing some much
appreciated quality of life improvements and even a fair amount of new content.
The most broadcast change introduced with the new patch is the return of the Kanai s Cube. This
iconic game content has survived the test of time and has been dragged through the decades to bring
its mechanic to the aid of the Nehalem. The cube is earnt through the addition of a faux quest whereby
you are politely asked by Zoltun Kulle (yes he still refuses to die) to go and retrieve the artefact and in
return he will help you use it properly.
For someone with an interest in the lore, this was a nice start, but that is basically much where the
story aspect ends although this is a patch, not an expansion after all, so let s not be ungrateful. The
new zone in Act 3, the Ruins of Sescheron, provides a quaint throwback to the feel of the Lord of
Destruction

Emily Dickinson s Poetry Essay
The large amount of poems in Dickinson s collection containing the theme of death is impossible to be
overlooked. Approximately one third from her entire collection speaks about the subject, something
that for many decades has intrigued fans and scholars alike. In order to understand this fixation, one
must study the poet s upbringing and religious conflicts, which are unequivocally at the center of this
fascination with the theme of death.
Consider by many as the best and least known major American author (Eberwein 1), Dickinson love
for poetry began and was encouraged by Benjamin F. Newton, a two year apprentice at her father s
law firm, who encourage her in her writing and apparently told her she could become a great poet

Mr. Dickinson was a very well respected man who had been treasurer for the Amherst College for
nearly four decades; he served many times as state legislator, was a great leader within the Amherst
community, but most importantly, he was a father with infinite love to his daughter Emily. In a letter
after his death, Emily wrote, His heart was pure and terrible and I think no one like it exits. I am glad
there is immortality but would have tested myself before entrusting him (Dickinson 528), meaning
that she would have preferred dying before her father.
Born in December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, Emily grew up in a puritan family
surrounded with Calvinist doctrine religious doctrine which stresses that people are saved through
God s grace and the necessity of conversion It was this condition for conversion into Christianity what
created an internal religious conflict, that led Emily to distancing herself from church, and later to the
hundreds of poems and letters in which she rationalized her decision and began to explores the theme
of death and salvation
In his book titled Emily Dickinson, Paul J. Ferlazzo claims that Dickinson s sense of worry about
salvation after death takes many forms in every period of her life. In order to expand on his claim,
Ferlazzo offers the following Dickinson s stanza as an example to support his point of view.

And now it was time for the House Chooser which ensured that the student goes to the best

The very next day they were supposed to attend their first magical class. The three cousins were
late to the class, but their kind teacher ignored their late arrival. All the students learnt the art of
riding the broom. Albus was the first one to learn this art due to inheritance of few skills from his
father Harry Potter and also since he was a quick learner. Everyone cheered him, save one, the
son of Lord Voldemort.
Everyone had thought that there was no successor to Lord Voldemort but there he was. Lord
Voldemort being the God of all antagonists gave some of his powers to his son so that the
extinction of his family and legacy does not take place. Voldemort s son, Arceus, was a very
mischievous student, he casted spells on students and frightened them. Once he even killed
a new born Pegasus (flying horse). Due to this cruel act of Arceus the principal of Hogwarts
School Mr. Peter Quill cursed and expelled him for a month. But the ignorant Arceus still
entered the school. So the Principal took a strict decision and rusticated him from the school for
the whole session. The students were not surprised by his rustication.

However, Roberta went from being a call girl to a streetwalker as she became a drug addict. After a

She was no longer able to be a call girl as the drugs had transformed her looks and she needed to look

much to hate her job. She shows how she copes with her job by stating, What I did was no different
from what 99% of American women are taught to do (48). Roberta thought that her job was no
different than what American women were doing. She even continued to compare her job as a call girl

Analysis Of Still Life With Golden Breams By Francisco De...
Many artists through time have used art to express emotion or a standpoint, and Francisco de Goya
can surely be classified under this category of artist. Famously known for his controversial
relationship with the Spanish government the audience may conclude that many of his painting will
have a connection to the dispute. For example, in Still Life with Golden Breams most people may see
it as a well made still life of lifeless fish but in reality, it holds a deeper meaning. For instance, when
someone gets the opportunity to observe this composition they could say that the inability for the
Golden Breams to close their eyes reminds the viewer of how the fish were ones alive. That is to say
Goya probably made this still life to symbolize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Texture and mass are also very evident in this artwork. Francisco de Goya used texture and value to
his advantage to create a realistic figure that contains mass. The illusion of mass is so well portrayed
that it is almost as if the viewer could reach in and grab a fish out of the canvas and hold it like a
merchant in a fish market. In addition, the way the fish are stacked on top of each other renders an
organic rhythm that flows easily. In other words, the Golden Breams do not look as if they were in an
artificial potion rather it looks natural. Overall, Goya used atmospheric perspective to create the sense
of proximity of the fish to the viewer by modifying color, value, and texture. The overall style of
Francisco de Goya was miscellaneous since it evolved and changed through his careers as an artist,
however, his message to portray his standpoint and feeling has been there since the beginning. Goya s
brush strokes would vary from slow and delicate to raid and aggressive depending on his work. In
addition, his use of contrast would deviate from time as well but in his most noticeable artwork he
would highlight the main subject and darken the background. The way Goya used light and darkness
ended up created a unique technique where the artist would force the audience to look at a specific

Essay about The Natural
Bernard Malamud was brought up in the mid 1900s, a time period when baseball played a huge role in
the lives of many Americans. Americans loved baseball because it gave them a chance to stop working
and simply relax while they cheered on their favorite team. It was a time when people played baseball
solely for the love of the game and the thrill of hearing the fans cheer for them. Today, however,
baseball is much more corrupt, and many athletes are only in it due to their own greed and selfishness.
This strong desire for money stems from some important players in the past, such as Babe Ruth and

Kevin Baker described him as staggering in his self absorption (Baker, xii). This means that he is
confident to the point that he believes he can do everything himself, and doesn t care about the rest of

example, Roy s contract entitled him to make three thousand dollars for the season. Within a few
weeks, he decided that this was not enough, so he spoke with the team owner about a raise. In the
novel, it says that: He figured for himself a flat forty five thousand dollars for the rest of the season
(Malamud, 89). Forty five thousand dollars is more than most baseball players made in an entire
season, and he was asking for this astronomical amount for only half of a season. Each of these traits
can be considered one of Roy s tragic flaws. His greed and his self confidence both contribute to his
downfall at the end of the novel, in which he is humiliated due to his acceptance of a bribe to throw an
important game and lose the pennant. In the New York Times, an article written by Harry Sylvester

Culture And Media Bias
Media shapes the society we live in today and has grown and evolved to become a way of controlling
culture and people. Media has a variety of meanings, the most common being; channels of
communication which can range from interpersonal media such as letters, texting, telephone and
skype to mass media which uses TV, radio, newspapers and the internet to convey information.
The vessel in which information is being communicated is very important, as it has a heavy influence
on the way a society and its culture is formed. Harold Innis, a political economist, wrote about the bias
of communication and monopolies of power and divided media bias into 2 categories; time biased
media and space biased media. He compares time biased media to the Egyptian rule and space bias to
the Roman Empire. The idea being that, changes in communication rapidly advance society, and you
must find the correct balance between time and space biased communication to achieve a stable
society.
In Egyptian times, stone and speech were used as methods of communication for laws, tradition,

Before going into the meeting with Texoil, I had assessed my BATNA as mentioned by Fisher, Ury,

attractive propositions, I was becoming open to the possibility of not selling the station at all and
continuing to run it it became a definite element of my BATNA, although it would mean that my
husband and I would be abandoning our dream plans. BP had already offered $400K for the station

understanding of the value proposition involved and built some trust. Based on other changes that
Texoil would be expected to make to the operations, such as adding a mini mart and a 3rd operating
shift, I asked for a reasonable price of $590K.
The Texoil representative rejected our initial selling price and claimed that he was not authorized to
spend this much money. It is likely that this was simply a means to negotiate down with us. He made
an offer of $500K for the station, significantly under cutting our suggested price. My spouse and I did
our best to get the representative to improve his offer but were not able to do so. We re iterated over
the reasons/justifications for pricing the station as we had done, even presenting scenarios to show the
undeniable profitability of the enterprise. Although the representative did not move on price, we were
able to extract a concession in terms of employment for both of us at a fairly attractive annual salary.
In the end the Texoil representative met our reservation point and we were able to conclude with a
deal that was favorable to both sides.
In this negotiation, I could see that we covered all the three elements of negotiation moving from

Mortality, Success, Success, And Happiness
Mortality, a thing most people are, almost painfully, aware of. Though they may not want to think
about it, a person s mortality affects them at every stage in their life. As an adolescent, it gives one the
mentality of You Only Live Once , as a middle aged adult it makes one fall into a midlife crisis, and as
an elderly person it makes one afraid of all the possible consequences of one s actions. While some
would argue that mortality is humanity s one great downfall, there are others that would argue the
importance of it. Consequently, they would claim that a person s mortality is what makes them great.
No matter which side one is on, it always comes back to the ominous death that awaits all; it is always
fatality that rules lives, that rules one s success. However, it is arguable that mortality is not what
drives people to success, but the search for happiness. Due to this debatable topic, there have been
many forms of literature that have explored the intricate relationships between mortality, success, and
happiness; included in these pieces of literature are The Death of Ivan Ilych , a short story by Leo
Tolstoy, and Imagining the Downside of Immortality , a New York Times article written by Stephen
Cave. While it is impossible to formulate a certain answer, The Death of Ivan Ilych and Imagining the

Enterobacter Aerogenes Research Paper
Enterobacter aerogenes is a species of rod shaped gram negative bacterium in the family of
enterobacteriaceae. It is a facultative anaerobe, meaning that it can grow in either the presence of
oxygen or in the absence of oxygen. It also uses fermentation as the means of gathering energy that
protect it from reative oxygen species, and allowing it to live in oxygenated environments.
Enterobacter aerogenes is a nosocomial and pathogenic bacterium that cause opportunistic infections.
The majority are sensitive to most antibiotics designed for this bacteria class, but it can be complicated
due to their resistance mechanism such as lactamas, which quickly become resistant to standard
antibiotics during the treatment. Enterobacter aerogenes is found in human gastrointestinal tract, and it
does not generally cause disease in healthy individuals. It has been found to live in ... Show more

Enterobacter aerogenes have been found to produce a greater amount of bioethanol due to a process
called metabolism (ScienceDirect). Many Enterobacter aerogenes have flagella, and thus motility, that
distinguish them from Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria (Kara, 2016). Traditional approaches for
treating Enterobacter infections involve single agent antimicrobial therapy such as an aminoglycoside,
a fluoroquinolone, and a cephalosporin. However, newer theories have adopted combination therapy
employing multiple antibiotics with different core structure. In some Enterobacter aerogenes resistant
to aminoglycoside, resistance has been associated with a bacterial genetic element known as integron.
Integrons contain genes that confer antibiotic resistance capabilities and its incorporated into bacteria
genomes via genetic recombination (Kara, 2016). Finally, we have learned that Enterobacter
aerogenes have some positive and negatives implications on human

Conflict Management Styles Among Corporate Executives
Choosing a topic and problem for a signature assignment which is very close to a research topic could
be a hurdle. It requires good literature review which is derived by tapping and evaluating previous
researchers efforts and expertise. A potential research study on Conflict Management Styles among
Corporate Executives in Developing Countries Nigeria a Case Study is considered for a signature
assignment. Conflict is inevitable and exists everywhere. In organizational system, conflict and
methods of conflict management influences different groups (employees, management team and
executives). Conflicts are realities of life and can be defined as a situation of competition in which the
parties involved are quite aware of the incompatibility of future condition whereby each party wishes
to occupy a position that is incompatible with the wishes of the other (Olu Adesubomi, 2013, p. 2).
They have no boundaries. They occur whether we like it or not, especially when there is disagreement
and misunderstanding which stands as major key characteristics of human relationships. The
relationship could be domestic, national, or international (Spiroska, 2014). Furthermore, conflicts
happen when people are incompatible. In the organizational setting, conflict could arise due to failure
of the employer, not honoring certain agreed bargaining. Henry (2009) indicated that if the workers
right and prerogative is not appropriated rightly, it could cause conflict; such workers

Spinach Photosynthesis Lab Report
We measured the rate of photosynthesis in this lab. By exposing spinach leaves to light, we were
triggering photosynthesis to start. Photons from the light excite electrons in the accessory pigments in
the leaves which then causes them to eventually transfer their energy to the chlorophyll a molecule in
the reaction center which causes an electron to jump to a primary electron acceptor, thus moving the
energy along. When this electron jumps, the photolysis of water occurs in order fill the electron hole
in the chlorophyll a molecules. H2O splits into electrons, H+ ions, and oxygen. Therefore measuring
the percentage of O2 in the container will be measuring the rate of photosynthesis. As there was no
increase in the amount of O2, this would ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For this lab, we used blue and red filters over the lights which, when measured, ended up having a
maximum emission for the blue filter of 491 nm while the red was 667 nm. Most red wavelengths
have a wavelength of 622 to 780 nm while blue wavelengths range from 455 to 492 nm ( Wavelength
). Moreover, spinach photosynthetic pigment absorbed light optimally between wavelengths of 400
nm and 450 nm and also at 650 nm (Lederer). This means that the blue wavelengths (being at 491 nm)
were 41 nm higher that the optimally absorbed wavelengths. On the other hand, the red wavelengths
of the filter were only 17 nm over 650 nm and therefore were much closer to the optimal absorbed
light. The shorter distance between the red wavelengths shows that the red filter was closest to the
wavelength that spinach would get the most out of. The blue wavelength was too far off from the
optimal wavelength so it did not do as much for its spinach leaves. This is why the red wavelengths
may have increased the rate of photosynthesis over the blue

Reflection Paper On Hallucinations
After viewing the hallucinating patient video, I learned that they need our support the most. I never
imagined how much hallucinations can make difference in person s life. The main thing I learned is
that communication technique plays an important role while dealing with hallucinating patient. I
always used to think that it will be very hard to control and have conversation with hallucinating
client. However, this video has taught me how to communicate in calm and effective manners.
The four stages of hallucinations are: Comforting stage, condemning stage, controlling stage and
conquering stage. In the first stage, a patient begins to experience anxiety, loneliness and guilt.
However, he/she think that these thoughts are their own and they can manage it by comforting
themselves. In stage two know as condemning stage, patient start having greater anxiety than stage
one. Patient starts listen to the hallucination. Patient feels that other people are listening to them and
they start avoiding social interactions. Their vital signs go up as the emotions of the patient increases.
In controlling stage, patient starts to experience anxiety at high level. Voices which they are hearing
will make command to them and will threaten if the commands are not followed. In this stage, patient
will start to feel suicidal or violent thoughts. Conquering stage is the most dangerous stage. The
hallucination is only thing that patient will think in this stage. It can last for long period of

Describe The Importance Of Electrolytes
Electrolytes are very important to have in the human body. It is very unhealthy to have an imbalance
of electrolytes. Electrolyte imbalance may lead to disease or even death. ( Nate Morrow )
Salt is a very important electrolyte. Humans need salt to survive on the planet of Earth. Salt can also
be called sodium. Low sodium levels are very dangerous. People with diseases are at higher risk of a
low sodium level.Another important electrolyte is magnesium. Magnesium is important for 300
biochemical reactions! Also an important electrolyte is phosphate. Phosphate strengthens bones and
teeth. Bicarbonate is also one of the major electrolytes. Kidneys release bicarbonate when acids build
up through metabolic processes. Also, potassium is a key electrolyte. Potassium is important for
regulating your heartbeat and muscle function. ( U.S National Library of Medicine ) It is also
important to keep your electrolytes balanced. Electrolyte loss is very dangerous. Water does not
replenish the electrolytes lost in sweat. Most sports drinks claim to replenish electrolytes lost in sweat.
Although, not all beverages are made to hydrate, so be aware on which sports drink you choose next.
Hydration is also crucial to live a healthy life. Dehydration can cause electrolyte imbalance.
Electrolyte imbalance symptoms include twitching, weakness, and seizures. ( Healthline )
It is also important to have a healthy amount of salt in your body. Salt imbalances can lead to heart
disease. Eat healthy to

Stephanie Hervey Character Analysis Essay
People are always either judging others or being judged. They act on what they see others do. They
see what they dislike and like in others, and decide on whether to follow or judge. Clarence is a
parvenu and arrogant man who is always on the lookout for other snobs , and tries to avoid them.
Maria Edgeworth defines C. Hervey s character as a cliched young man whose intellect and wealth
make rather overbearing. In the selection, C. Hervey s self absorbed character is developed through
judgemental tone, third person limited point of view, and descriptive language.
The narrator reveals a judgemental tone of Clarence Hervey through descriptions of his character. The
tone represents not only the personality of the narrator but also the characters in the selection. An

In the selection, she portrays a descriptive language when describing C. Hervey s character. One
literary element that she uses is diction. She uses words such as chameleon character, imprudent , wild
, and eccentric . By using these words, she is showing us a better picture of Hervey s personality.
Chameleon is a very distinctive and highly specialized lizard. Imprudent is saying that he doesnt care
about the consequences for his actions, which also goes with the word wild. Eccentric means that on
top of everything else, he is also slightly strange. Another literary element that she uses is
juxtaposition. Another example in line 53, Consequently he saw Belinda almost every day, and every
day he saw her with increasing admiration of her beauty, and with increasing dread of being taken in
to marry a niece of the catch match maker , the name by which Mrs. Stanhope was known amongst the
men of his acquaintance. By saying this, she is showing contrast by saying that she admires her for
beauty and attracted to her, but yet he has a fear of marrying her. The narrator s descriptive language
helps define Clarence s complex

Essay on Smoke signals
The movie Smoke Signal is a story that portrays what a Native American really means. It is a movie
based on story written by Sherman Alexie. Thomas is the narrator of the story. It s just not a simple
movie but it has meaning to it, which is the best thing about the movie. It shows the life of Indians and
how their life was and what they had to deal with. The movie has two main characters name Victor
and Thomas. The movie starts with a house that goes on fire and the man (Arnold Joseph) Victor s
father saves Thomas and Victor from the fire Victor the main character plays the role of a typical

Victor remembers what Suzy said him about his dad that in the fire that took place when he was a
baby, his dad always wanted to help him and he did went back to save his life. This hits on his mind
and he decides to get help for the lady. His thoughts about his dad changes. At the end of the movie
Victor disperses the remains of his father in the river and forgives him for what he did before.
I really like the movie and the story was very different than any other movies. Sherman s way of
writing the stories seems very unique and could not tell what would happen next in the movie. When
Victor knew about his father s death I was thinking he would not go to Phoenix to get his remains
since he had hatred towards him but he decides to go which was surprising. It was always funny how
Thomas kept telling stories about different stuffs to Victor even though he knew Victor don t like to
hear them. The author has tried to show the culture of Indians, the thoughts of people, how they dealt
their life through his stories which I really found interesting and something different to learn. The
author has showed how life was back then and I liked the fact he tried to show what impact it can have
to a child s mind if he sees his father drinking alcohol and tormenting his mother

He has beaten the devil and lives in victory. In our text we can see this proof because he gets up save

Then there is the game itself, which is also self changing every couple of weeks or so. These key
points help to define the game and give some consensus about how well the game actually is.
Firstly, there is how the people who play the game treat each other. There are generally two types of
players. One of these types of players are the people who treat everyone with respect and talk nicely
about others. The whole point of the game is to have fun and to play the way you want to play. These
are the people who you really should thank when in a game. They will help you to understand the
game and give many tips and tricks on how to play even better. Then you can continue playing with
them for even more help if needed. You can even add them to your friends list to just play a casual
game with them. These people are the persons players should look for. There are, however, some
people who aren t as great.
People do exist in the game where their only goal is making a player s life a virtual hell. These people
are often referred to as toxic players. These are the worst type of people as all they do is make the

With either option a student chooses it will require the individual to have a means to pay for basic
living expenses such as transportation, meals, and other personal expenses. This can be a major
setback for some students. Although online and traditional learning both offer students the same
education that is needed for their lives and careers of their choice, people need to reflect on the aspects
of their lives. For those that are thinking of studying on campus, they need to figure out if they have
the time that will be necessary for their learning experience. They must also decide on whether they
can find child care among other things that is needed for on campus learning. Those contemplating
distance learning should think about whether they have or can achieve good time management skills.
They must also make sure they have Internet access which is required to take classes in this way.
Some other things to consider are which method of instruction students feel would be more realistic as

Character Analysis Of Detective Spade
Throughout the novel, nothing is told about Detective spade or his private life. Unlike Detective
Marlowe the reader learns that he once was an F.B investigator that was fired. Detective Spade s past
life is untold and unknown. Depending and trusting no one but himself with no individual from his
past to vouch for his credibility trust by the people put with him. Has never displayed a weakness or
has shown vulnerability toward any force of nature or human being. He is viewed as a stone cold
individual that holds no emotions. Due to unknown information of Detective Spade, the people view
him as a mysterious individual. He is mysterious in his own way and that creates fear in people when
approaching him. Unable to figure out who he truly is as an individual. Detective Spade engages in a
conversation with Mrs.Haven, No, we lived in Seattle the first year and then came here. San Francisco

Well, who are his friends? Don t ask me! He made an impatient grimace. You know some of them he

husband Eli Haven missing. He is speaking to a woman who is unable to locate her husband and
shows simply no remorse or sympathy. He is interested in learning about the company he keeps
around him friend or acquaintance which will benefit his investigation. Insofar as it mirrors the world,
literature reflects the prevalent social attitude toward women; and since this attitude so often values
men and masculine pursuits over women and feminine hobbies, women s concerns seem devalued.
(Griffin pg 1). What Griffin states is exactly what has taken place during the conversation between
Mrs.Haven and Detective Spade. Mrs.Haven during this conversation is being portrayed as being
women that are being questioned beyond her power, knowledge, and ability. When Detective Spade is

As a bigger company Blockbuster has the financial funds to attract more subscribers using heavy
marketing. This entry directly enters Netflix s niche market and now Netflix has to find a way to
differentiate. For starters, what would be Netflix s entry strategy to these new markets? It could ship
the DVDs from USA but this option would have serious disadvantages like import tariffs, shipping
costs, long delivery time which would lead to customer dissatisfaction and a very small market share
with probably losses rather than profits. If Netflix would open a subsidiary in Europe it would not
have problems like the latter but it would need investors since financing the whole subsidiary may

many small independent countries with their own laws and import tariffs so this could be a problem as

(which would also present shipping costs) the European customers might not like US movies that

established relationship with any European movie studio. So they would lose the competitive

Cinderella And The Little Glass Slipper
Cinderella is a well beloved folktale following the life of a kind hearted heroine trapped in an abusive
household, yet despite the obstacles faced, she manages to attend a ball and eventually receives her
happily ever after. The story has been reinterpreted in numerous countries where it is estimated that
there are nearly seven hundred versions out there. With the continuous popularity of Cinderella, there
has been much criticism concerning the representation of Cinderella and the effects it has on the
female demographic. By analyzing Cinderella s gender representation of a particular version in
accordance to generated criticism related to the effects it has on the female demographic, it can be
determined that as new renditions are being created over time, it can be noticed that Cinderella s
gender representation are gradually becoming more independent, and active.
Charles Perrault s Cinderella or The Little Glass Slipper was published in 1697. It is considered to be
one the most prevalent reinterpretations of the classic story. Perrault s version was addressed largely to
an adult and highly sophisticated audience (Cullen 57). For this reason, Perrault seldom emphasizes
the details of Cinderella s mistreatment and instead shifts the stories focus on the moral and
materialistic concerns related to his audience in order to to please [his] aristocratic audience (Tatar

Much of the New Testament talks about the life of Jesus, and these books were written by Jesus
disciples. The original texts that made up the Bible are gone or lost, and have been copied various

into two Testaments , one is called the Old Testament, which was originally written in Hebrew. The
Old Testament talks about the creation of the world to the laws a person should follow. The second
half is called the New Testament, was written in Greek, and much of this talks about the life and
teachings of Jesus Christ. It also has letters written by leaders of the early church (Geoghegan, 14),
and also has the end of the time prophecies. In each of the Testaments there are books (think of the
chapters of a novel), here are a total of 66 books in the Bible that we have today, in each book there

important. They will then offer the Kami a choice offering if the crop is spared. But the Japanese do

The Buddhist rituals are performed by Shinto priests, private people who can marry and have children.
There are even female priests. The priests are supported by the Miko, young ladies in white kimonos.
They must be unmarried, and are often the preist s daughters. Also, in contrast to the Western
religions, there are no absolutes, although there is a goddess, Amaterasu Omikami, the Sun goddess.
An absolute is an object of worship that is always present, such as a God. But, a certain kind of
weather is not an absolute, because the weather can change at any moment.
Shinto is a very optimistic faith. It is thought by it s followers that all

Theme Of Racism In Huck Finn
The notorious Mark Twain once said Of all the animals, man is the only one that is cruel. He is the
only one that inflicts pain for the pleasure of doing it. Having lived at a time where racism and slavery
were debatably at their peak, Twain undeniably experienced the cruelty of which humanity is capable.
Twain s mindset during the aforementioned quotation was evident in his masterwork Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn. Especially in recent years, his work is often criticized and even censored for its
supposedly racist ideologies. Mainly having to do with the book insisting on referring to the
deuteragonist, Jim, and other slaves as niggers . Be that as it may, the deeper you dive into the
publication; you would come to find that Twain instead satirizes the concepts of racism and slavery
and even comes across as having an anti slavery perspective. Ironically, one of the best examples of
Twain s masterful satire is demonstrated in one of the novel s most off putting moments. The first time
the reader is introduced to Jim, they are given a very unfavorable description of the character. Jim is
described as illiterate, almost childlike and unintelligent. However, the reader must understand that
this description of Jim is supplied from Huck s point of view. Although Huck himself is presented to
the reader as not being inherently racist, he was raised by incredibly racist individuals who implanted
their beliefs and hate into Huck. As distasteful as this description is, it is

Historical Trauma Or Intergenerational Trauma
Historical trauma (HT), also referred to as Intergenerational trauma, is the theory that large historical
traumas can be experienced by descendants generations later. (Walkerdine, Olsvold, Rudberg, 2013).
The position that clinicians take is that traumatic historical events associated with events such as war,
slavery, colonization, and poverty are experienced and transmitted between family members and
crosses generations. Some ethnical groups that have historical trauma response in the United States
are: Jewish Holocaust survivors, African Americans, Japanese Americans, and Native Americans. I

Understanding the Global Warming Debate
Throughout history climates have drastically changed. There have been shifts from warm climates to
the Ice Ages (Cunningham Cunningham, 2009, p.204). Evidence suggests there have been at least a
dozen abrupt climate changes throughout the history of the earth. There are a few suspected reasons
for these past climate changes. One reason may be that asteroids hitting the earth and volcanic
eruptions caused some of them. A further assumption is that 22 year solar magnetic cycles and 11 year
sunspot cycles played a part in the changes. A further possibility is that a regular shifting in the angle
of the moon orbiting earth, with the ensuing changing tides and atmospheric circulation, affects the
global climate (Cunningham Cunningham, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Finally, they claim that ExxonMobile s relationships with government officials have made it possible
for them to block federal policies (Easton, 2009, p.155).
Next, is data showing that increasing greenhouse gases caused by human activities is causing directly
observed climate changes. The first resulting climate change discussed is warming global surface
temperature. There has been an increase in global surface temperature of 0.74 degrees C since the late
19th century. In the last 50 years alone the temperature has increased by 0.13 degrees C per decade.
North America and Eurasia have seen the largest increase in warmth (Easterling Karl, 2011, para6).
Further, the hottest years recorded since instrument recording of temperatures became possible were
from 1995 to 2006. Plus, new measurement analysis of the lower and mid troposphere show
comparable temperature rising rates as surface temperatures (Alley et al., 2007, p.5). Also, in this past
century the arctic temperature average has doubled in comparison to the global temperature average
(Alley et al., 2007, p.7). In addition, borehole temperatures, snow cover, and glacier recession data all
seem to agree with recent warming (Easterling Karl, 2011, para11). Scientists are saying that the
difference between the warming period at the end of the Ice Age and the warming happening now is
that the warming at the end of the Ice Age was very gradual over a span of 5,000 years, but the
warming now is

Reckless Driving Research Paper
Reckless Driving One of the more serious issues that is becoming more and more of a bigger problem
in the South Coast today is reckless driving. What reckless driving is is driving in a way that puts
people and property in harm s way. A reckless driving offense can be tacked onto or used in lieu of
other offenses like speeding. Some of the most common types of reckless driving are; driving under
the influence, drowsy driving, and phone usage while driving. Reckless driving is one cause of death
in the area. On average there are over 6 million car accidents in the United States every year and more
than 3 million people are injured due to car accidents; 2 million of these injuries are permanent. There

MADD also strives to support policy change like the policy that requires convicted drunk drivers to

that they are helping even if it isn t a great amount it is something. MADD has helped in saving over
300,000 lives and counting in the years since the program has been created. Still there are thousands

The Civil Rights Of African Americans
The term civil rights is very broad when it is to be defined. It has many different aspects as in to what
it can mean, from integration all the way to voting rights of African Americans. My main point is to
focus on the Selma Marches from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama, but also to dig deeper
into it to find the significance of a certain day, the day was called Bloody Sunday. I want to find out
the historical situation behind the marchers who were beat and killed on that day and also look at John
Lewis, and the key part that he played into the events that happened on that day and to also look at the
reasoning behind the whole march. Racism is defined in many different variations and means different
things to certain people; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On March 7, 1965, a very famous five day, 54 long mile march of about 600 peaceful protestors took
place from Selma, Alabama to the state capital Montgomery, Alabama. This was a very peaceful
march that was caused by the Voting Rights Movement for African Americans in Selma. In Selma,
African Americans made up more than half the population, but only a mere two percent were actual
registered voters. Discrimination and intimidation tactics aimed at African American kept them from
registering and voting. The demonstrators marched to demand fairness in voter registration. With over
half the population of Selma being African American there is no reason or excuse besides ignorance
for why only two percent had the right to vote. To give sort of a background to leading up to the
march, in 1963 a group of community activists formed the Dallas County Improvement Association
Dallas County being the actual county that Selma is in. With the goal of having White and Colored
signs removed from public buildings, an investigation of police brutality against Africans Americans,
and increased access to jobs and voter registration. Local officials ignored the Association s concerns.
At the invitation of the Improvement Association, Dr. Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference also known as the (SCLC) chose Selma as a focus for civil rights
demonstrations in 1964. The mayor of

necessary to cross the border to live a better sustainable life for their family. Mexico has its natural

Design Of Low Pass Fir Filter
DESIGN OF LOW PASS FIR FILTER THROUGH
PARTICLE SWARM OPTIMIZATION
Abstract: In the common case, the impulse response is finite because there is no feedback in the FIR.
A lack of feedback guarantees that the impulse response will be finite. Therefore, the term finite
impulse response is nearly synonymous with no feedback . However, if feedback is employed yet the
impulse response is finite, the filter still is a FIR. In this paper FIR filter design through particle
swarm optimization.
Key words: FIR filter, particle swarm optimization

It is developed from swarm intelligence and is inspired by social behaviour of bird flocking or fish
schooling. PSO is an optimization algorithm with implicit parallelism which can be easily handled
with the non differential objective functions. PSO algorithm uses a number of particle vectors moving
around in the solution space searching for the optimist solution. Every particle in the algorithm acts as
a point in the N dimensional space. Each particle keeps the information in the solution space for each
iteration and the best solution is calculated that has obtained by that particle is called personal best
(pbest). This solution is obtained according to the personal experiences of each particle vector.
Another best value that is tracked by the PSO is in the neighborhood of that particle and this value is
called (gbest) Figure 1 PSO flow chart.

An RLC circuit (the letters R, L and C can be in other orders) is an electrical circuit consisting of a
resistor, an inductor, and a capacitor, connected in series or in parallel. The RLC part of the name is
due to those letters being the usual electrical symbols for resistance, inductance and capacitance
respectively. The circuit forms a harmonic oscillator for current and will resonate in a similar way as
an LC circuit will. The main difference that the presence of the resistor makes is that any oscillation

Sqlite Essay
SQLite is an Open Source database. SQLite supports standard relational database features like SQL
syntax, transactions and prepared statements. The database requires limited memory at runtime
(approx. 250 KByte) which makes it a good candidate from being embedded into other runtimes.
SQLite supports the data types TEXT (similar to String in Java), INTEGER (similar to long in Java)
and REAL (similar to double in Java). All other types must be converted into one of these fields
before getting saved in the database. SQLite itself does not validate if the types written to the columns
are actually of the defined type, e.g. you can write an integer into a string column and vice versa.

Other more familiar database engines run great once you get them going. But doing the initial
installation and configuration can be intimidatingly complex.
Server less
Most SQL database engines are implemented as a separate server process. Programs that want to
access the database communicate with the server using some kind of interprocess communication
(typically TCP/IP) to send requests to the server and to receive back results. SQLite does not work this
way. With SQLite, the process that wants to access the database reads and writes directly from the
database files on disk. There is no intermediary server process. There are advantages and
disadvantages to being server less. The main advantage is that there is no separate server process to
install, setup, configure, initialize, manage, and troubleshoot. This is one reason why SQLite is a zero
configuration database engine. Programs that use SQLite require no administrative support for setting
up the database engine before they are run. Any program that is able to access the disk is able to use
an SQLite database.
On the other hand, a database engine that uses a server can provide better protection from bugs in the
client application stray pointers in a client cannot corrupt memory on the server. And because a server
is a single persistent process, it is able control database access with more precision, allowing for finer
grain locking and better concurrency.
Most SQL database engines are

Johannes Gutenberg Influence
Johannes Gutenberg, born 1395 A.D. in Mainz, Germany, was said to have apprenticed as a goldsmith,
which prompted him to invent the printing press. Gutenberg began to trifle with metal alloys and
minerals to create a lightweight metal that could be poured into a detailed cast and still be strong
enough to last thousands of impressions. Gutenberg s invention allowed for a simpler, faster process,
and offered longer lasting materials. The instant effect of the moveable type printing press was
influential in the expanse of human existence. Gutenberg s most notable and first successful print job
was the 42 Line Bible. From the moment of its inception, the printed book became the universal
standard in publishing and literary devices.
In addition to the printing press, Gutenberg developed a new oil based ink that was more durable and
higher in quality than the water based inks used at that time. The moveable printing press had a hand
in the scientific revolution by enabling scientists to publish their findings in scholarly articles. The
availability of the written word used to be something that was subjugated to the rich and powerful. It
soon became a common basis for information distribution to all members of society after Gutenberg.

A Natural New World By Aldous Huxley
Annie Madden
Mrs. Maya
ERWC
18 December 2014
A Natural New World In Aldous Huxley s, Brave New World, the main goal of the utopian society is
to achieve a state of stability that allows the civilians to live happily ever after. Each person is
conditioned into a certain class where they accept their assigned job. In the World State there is no
such thing as family or any other relationships. The drug soma ensures that the only emotion the
civilians feel is happiness. However, along with social stability comes a loss of individuality.
Community, identity, and emotions, three characteristics that are natural and required in order for an
individual to truly live life have been erased from society. The World State removes these elements
because they are unstable and uncontrollable. Huxley shows that no amount of stability and happiness
is worth the loss of everything that makes us human. That means a utopian society is impossible. The
novel s key ingredient to stability is that individuality must be absent. The civilians are steered by ten
controllers that determine all aspects of society. Through mass production of people, individualism is
lost. Children are born in hatcheries where they are given certain elements that are important to proper
development. The civilians seem to believe they are happy and content with their simple lives, but
they do not know any better. According to the book, the motto of the World State is, Community,
Identity, and Stability.

  • 2. The Effects Of Restorative Justice On Juvenile Recidivism Literature Review Current research available on the effects of restorative justice on juvenile recidivism range from meta analyses of multiple studies to individual program studies. According to Bradshaw and Roseborough (2005), The use of meta analytic methods provides a useful means for summarizing diverse research findings across restorative justice studies and synthesizing these findings in an objective manner. (p. 19). Four meta analytic studies reveal an overall reduction in juvenile recidivism (Bradshaw and Roseborough 2005; Bradshaw, Roseborough, Umbreit, 2006; Latimer, Dowden, Muise, 2005; Wong, Bouchard, Gravel, Bouchard, Morselli, 2016). Data analysis revealed 12 out of the 21 studies had a statistically significant effect size of lowered recidivism of restorative justice participants compared to juveniles in the traditional justice system (Wong et al., 2016). Latimer, Dowden, and Muise (2005) showed comparable results of the effectiveness of restorative justice programs by conducting a meta analysis. 22 studies were collected through a comprehensive literature search and experts were consulted to reveal any unpublished research pertitnant to the effects of the restorative justice program, VOM on juvenile recidivism (Latimer et al., 2005). The outcome measures for this study focused on recidivism, along with restitution compliance and victim and offender satisfaction (Latimer et al., 2005). Juveniles that participated in each study were assigned to either VOM groups or traditional justice comparison groups. The overall results of the meta analysis showed a positive effect size of .07 on juvenile recidivism (Latimer et al., 2005). • 4. The Reign Of Peter The Great The reign of Peter the Great has been a source of considerable historical debate for many contemporary and traditional historians. Especially, the transformation he made to Russian culture, politics and economic, which arguably changed the foundations of society. Thus, the interval of some three hundred years has allowed us to access Peter the Great s reforms more accurately but we must consider that Russia during the late 17th century existed in different ethical and social circumstances to our own contemporary society as to make it almost a foreign civilisation. Judgements about Peter the Great using today s political and moral perspectives may have to be tempered unless we are accused of historical and cultural relativism. Therefore, we must be careful in analysing the impact that his many reforms caused and the lasting nature that they had on the very foundations of Russian society. Through his reign Peter revolutionised his country, reorganizing and strengthening the state and army, conquering new territories and building new navy, a seaport, and a new capital in St. Petersburg 1. The most significant change, Bushkovitch argues, was his campaign of Europeanisating Russia s culture which saw the introduction of all forms of Western advancements emerge into the society and by 1725, Russia had achieved the aim of entering on the European stage. The ultimate objective was to at least equal if not surpass other European states while joining them in their great power ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Media Controversy The news has a responsibility to provide accurate information to the American people. However, journalists are only human, and it is important to take note of any biases present in their writing. W.L. Bennett is one scholar who addressed this concern, arguing that journalism has four main media biases: personalization, dramatization, fragmentation, and authority disorder bias (Bennett, 2012). While Bennett voices concerns of adverse consequences, scholars Ozen Bas and Maria Elizabeth Grabe argue that biases like personalization can help people with lower education levels retain information better (Bas Grabe, 2015). Referencing two news clips and an article, this essay argues that media biases rampant across platforms have good intent to get ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The news clip is under one minute, and shows clips of the teacher high fiving his students before entering the classroom, while the journalists are smiling at the story. While the story is about a teacher from North Carolina, the fragmentation is present of the brevity of the content. One possible explanation could be from Bennett s statement on fragmentation, which he argues is normally the result of time constraints (Bennett, News Content: Four information biases that matter, 2012). With that in mind, this clip was perhaps used to fill in time and provide a quick human interest story, something to make viewers feel good as they start their day. • 8. The End Game Content Of Diablo 3 A Long Journey The end game content of Diablo 3 has changed a lot since the game was first released way back in 2012, and the steps taken have been progressive with regards to making the inevitable grind for late game gear less painstaking and more enjoyable. Rifts and bounties have provided clear cut goals at the late game stage, and the introduction of the enchanter eased the pain of the never ending quest that is the perfectly rolled drop. Now, season 4 has arrived, and the people still fighting their way up the seasonal ladder and clutching at achievement points have a treat in store, with the massive patch 2.3.0 bringing some much appreciated quality of life improvements and even a fair amount of new content. The most broadcast change introduced with the new patch is the return of the Kanai s Cube. This iconic game content has survived the test of time and has been dragged through the decades to bring its mechanic to the aid of the Nehalem. The cube is earnt through the addition of a faux quest whereby you are politely asked by Zoltun Kulle (yes he still refuses to die) to go and retrieve the artefact and in return he will help you use it properly. For someone with an interest in the lore, this was a nice start, but that is basically much where the story aspect ends although this is a patch, not an expansion after all, so let s not be ungrateful. • 16. Analysis Of Still Life With Golden Breams By Francisco De... Many artists through time have used art to express emotion or a standpoint, and Francisco de Goya can surely be classified under this category of artist. Famously known for his controversial relationship with the Spanish government the audience may conclude that many of his painting will have a connection to the dispute. For example, in Still Life with Golden Breams most people may see it as a well made still life of lifeless fish but in reality, it holds a deeper meaning. For instance, when someone gets the opportunity to observe this composition they could say that the inability for the Golden Breams to close their eyes reminds the viewer of how the fish were ones alive. That is to say Goya probably made this still life to symbolize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Texture and mass are also very evident in this artwork. Francisco de Goya used texture and value to his advantage to create a realistic figure that contains mass. The illusion of mass is so well portrayed that it is almost as if the viewer could reach in and grab a fish out of the canvas and hold it like a merchant in a fish market. In addition, the way the fish are stacked on top of each other renders an organic rhythm that flows easily. In other words, the Golden Breams do not look as if they were in an artificial potion rather it looks natural. Overall, Goya used atmospheric perspective to create the sense of proximity of the fish to the viewer by modifying color, value, and texture. The overall style of Francisco de Goya was miscellaneous since it evolved and changed through his careers as an artist, however, his message to portray his standpoint and feeling has been there since the beginning. Goya s brush strokes would vary from slow and delicate to raid and aggressive depending on his work. In addition, his use of contrast would deviate from time as well but in his most noticeable artwork he would highlight the main subject and darken the background. The way Goya used light and darkness ended up created a unique technique where the artist would force the audience to look at a specific part of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 17. Essay about The Natural Bernard Malamud was brought up in the mid 1900s, a time period when baseball played a huge role in the lives of many Americans. Americans loved baseball because it gave them a chance to stop working and simply relax while they cheered on their favorite team. It was a time when people played baseball solely for the love of the game and the thrill of hearing the fans cheer for them. Today, however, baseball is much more corrupt, and many athletes are only in it due to their own greed and selfishness. This means that he is confident to the point that he believes he can do everything himself, and doesn t care about the rest of his team. Roy is also a very greedy man, and his greed is accentuated by his baseball skills. For example, Roy s contract entitled him to make three thousand dollars for the season. Within a few weeks, he decided that this was not enough, so he spoke with the team owner about a raise. In the novel, it says that: He figured for himself a flat forty five thousand dollars for the rest of the season (Malamud, 89). Forty five thousand dollars is more than most baseball players made in an entire season, and he was asking for this astronomical amount for only half of a season. Each of these traits can be considered one of Roy s tragic flaws. His greed and his self confidence both contribute to his downfall at the end of the novel, in which he is humiliated due to his acceptance of a bribe to throw an important game and lose the pennant. In the New York Times, an article written by Harry Sylvester stated: Roy Hobbs almost achieved greatness, but was distracted or betrayed by people, objects, or events equated with elements in our environment (Sylvester, www.nytimes.com/books/97/04/06/home/baseball natural.html). Media has a variety of meanings, the most common being; channels of communication which can range from interpersonal media such as letters, texting, telephone and skype to mass media which uses TV, radio, newspapers and the internet to convey information. The vessel in which information is being communicated is very important, as it has a heavy influence on the way a society and its culture is formed. Harold Innis, a political economist, wrote about the bias of communication and monopolies of power and divided media bias into 2 categories; time biased media and space biased media. He compares time biased media to the Egyptian rule and space bias to the Roman Empire. The idea being that, changes in communication rapidly advance society, and you must find the correct balance between time and space biased communication to achieve a stable society. Since ads to sell the station had been running for a few months with no attractive propositions, I was becoming open to the possibility of not selling the station at all and continuing to run it it became a definite element of my BATNA, although it would mean that my husband and I would be abandoning our dream plans. BP had already offered $400K for the station and even though that was a much lower amount than I was expecting, I could simply accept this offer and leave for my trip this was also part of my BATNA. The Texoil representative rejected our initial selling price and claimed that he was not authorized to spend this much money. It is likely that this was simply a means to negotiate down with us. He made an offer of $500K for the station, significantly under cutting our suggested price. My spouse and I did our best to get the representative to improve his offer but were not able to do so. We re iterated over the reasons/justifications for pricing the station as we had done, even presenting scenarios to show the undeniable profitability of the enterprise. Although the representative did not move on price, we were able to extract a concession in terms of employment for both of us at a fairly attractive annual salary. In the end the Texoil representative met our reservation point and we were able to conclude with a deal that was favorable to both sides. In this negotiation, I could see that we covered all the three elements of negotiation moving from Information phase to Competitive phase and ultimately arriving at the Cooperative phase. • 20. Mortality, Success, Success, And Happiness Mortality, a thing most people are, almost painfully, aware of. Though they may not want to think about it, a person s mortality affects them at every stage in their life. As an adolescent, it gives one the mentality of You Only Live Once , as a middle aged adult it makes one fall into a midlife crisis, and as an elderly person it makes one afraid of all the possible consequences of one s actions. While some would argue that mortality is humanity s one great downfall, there are others that would argue the importance of it. Consequently, they would claim that a person s mortality is what makes them great. No matter which side one is on, it always comes back to the ominous death that awaits all; it is always fatality that rules lives, that rules one s success. However, it is arguable that mortality is not what drives people to success, but the search for happiness. Due to this debatable topic, there have been many forms of literature that have explored the intricate relationships between mortality, success, and happiness; included in these pieces of literature are The Death of Ivan Ilych , a short story by Leo Tolstoy, and Imagining the Downside of Immortality , a New York Times article written by Stephen Cave. While it is impossible to formulate a certain answer, The Death of Ivan Ilych and Imagining the Downside of Immortality offer their own views on what makes a life successful; whether it is the prize of happiness or simply the consciousness of ever approaching ... • 23. Spinach Photosynthesis Lab Report We measured the rate of photosynthesis in this lab. By exposing spinach leaves to light, we were triggering photosynthesis to start. Photons from the light excite electrons in the accessory pigments in the leaves which then causes them to eventually transfer their energy to the chlorophyll a molecule in the reaction center which causes an electron to jump to a primary electron acceptor, thus moving the energy along. When this electron jumps, the photolysis of water occurs in order fill the electron hole in the chlorophyll a molecules. H2O splits into electrons, H+ ions, and oxygen. Therefore measuring the percentage of O2 in the container will be measuring the rate of photosynthesis. As there was no increase in the amount of O2, this would ... For this lab, we used blue and red filters over the lights which, when measured, ended up having a maximum emission for the blue filter of 491 nm while the red was 667 nm. Most red wavelengths have a wavelength of 622 to 780 nm while blue wavelengths range from 455 to 492 nm ( Wavelength ). Moreover, spinach photosynthetic pigment absorbed light optimally between wavelengths of 400 nm and 450 nm and also at 650 nm (Lederer). This means that the blue wavelengths (being at 491 nm) were 41 nm higher that the optimally absorbed wavelengths. On the other hand, the red wavelengths of the filter were only 17 nm over 650 nm and therefore were much closer to the optimal absorbed light. The shorter distance between the red wavelengths shows that the red filter was closest to the wavelength that spinach would get the most out of. The blue wavelength was too far off from the optimal wavelength so it did not do as much for its spinach leaves. This was one of the hardest things I had ever had to do in my life. We all cried a little, and then made promises to keep in touch, and then we were off into the real world! I was very happy to be at this point in my life, but I was scared deep down inside. When I look back on this day now, I still remember every detail as if it was yesterday. I was so proud, and happy to be able to celebrate such an amazing day with all of my friends and family. I know I will never forget how embarrassed I was walking across the stage in front of all of those people, feeling famous after taking so many pictures, making our final memories together at our graduation parties, and then being a nervous wreck when it was time to go out into the world without my best friends at my side. Identify the competences key to the success of Netflix s strategy and explain why. Netflix was a late entrant to the movie rental market and it was a first mover in the on line movie rental market. Netflix s strategy in the movie rental market is differentiation from traditional movie rental stores. This entry directly enters Netflix s niche market and now Netflix has to find a way to differentiate. For starters, what would be Netflix s entry strategy to these new markets? It could ship the DVDs from USA but this option would have serious disadvantages like import tariffs, shipping costs, long delivery time which would lead to customer dissatisfaction and a very small market share with probably losses rather than profits. If Netflix would open a subsidiary in Europe it would not have problems like the latter but it would need investors since financing the whole subsidiary may present a problem for Netflix. Another issue is that Europe, as a difference to the US, is consisted of many small independent countries with their own laws and import tariffs so this could be a problem as well. Another problem is the customers preferences. If Netflix would try to ship movies from the US (which would also present shipping costs) the European customers might not like US movies that much. They might prefer European movies better. Another issue is that Netflix doesn t have an established relationship with any European movie studio. So they would lose the competitive advantage that they have in the US. Another problem is the language barrier. In many countries like Germany, Italy, or Spain, movies are ... It is concerned with a young man who is trying to persuade a young woman to have sex with him by charming and rushing her into it because he only has one thing on his mind. In the poem he uses three different arguments, flattery, fear and passion to persuade her to his point of view. In the first section Andrew Marvell uses flattery, he does this by telling her that if he had all the time in the world he would use it by telling her how beautiful she is and stare into her eyes but he doesn t have this time and he knows this so he s using his charm and ... The Old Testament talks about the creation of the world to the laws a person should follow. The second half is called the New Testament, was written in Greek, and much of this talks about the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. A Natural New World By Aldous Huxley Annie Madden Mrs. Maya ERWC 18 December 2014 A Natural New World In Aldous Huxley s, Brave New World, the main goal of the utopian society is to achieve a state of stability that allows the civilians to live happily ever after. Each person is conditioned into a certain class where they accept their assigned job. In the World State there is no such thing as family or any other relationships. The drug soma ensures that the only emotion the civilians feel is happiness. However, along with social stability comes a loss of individuality. Community, identity, and emotions, three characteristics that are natural and required in order for an individual to truly live life have been erased from society. The World State removes these elements because they are unstable and uncontrollable. Huxley shows that no amount of stability and happiness is worth the loss of everything that makes us human. That means a utopian society is impossible. The novel s key ingredient to stability is that individuality must be absent. The civilians are steered by ten controllers that determine all aspects of society. Through mass production of people, individualism is lost. Children are born in hatcheries where they are given certain elements that are important to proper development.
