1. Formal Proposal
Title: The title of the magazine I wish to produce will be ‘Slam’. I feel like this would
be a really effective title for a rock magazine because its short and snappy so it will
grab the reader’s attention, instead of it being a long phrase which isn’t so effective.
Furthermore, rock music is quite aggressive and loud and the word ‘Slam’ can
represent this because it also gives the same feeling.
Genre: I chose to do rock because I know a lot about this type of music already
because I listen to it in my free time. Also, I have previously bought rock magazines
which I feel like would benefit me because I have an idea of the codes and
conventions of this genre and what to include.
Target Audience Profile:

 Lifestyle would include going to concerts and festivals and listening to a lot of
music in their free time
Initial ideas about front page: For my front cover, I plan on having a single mid shot
image of my model instead of a photo of a whole band because it won’t be as
effective as one person for the main image. For example, if I have one model giving
direct address it will catch the audience’s eye more because it makes them focus on
one thing instead of loads of different people. I’ll be doing a mid shot because the
reader will be able to see the facial expression clearly whilst still being able to have
an idea of the clothing the model is wearing. The colours I hope to include are black,
white, green and yellow. I will use black and green because it reflects the target
audience and the genre. The white would be to contrast against the black and help
things stand out, just like the colour yellow which I could use on things such as puffs
or pieces of text I want to stand out.
Initial ideas about contents page: For my contents page, I want to make it look really
neat so the reader can find what they’re looking for easier. To do this, I will use rule
of thirds to help lay out my page and make everything look professional. At the top, I
plan to put the main image going across two thirds which will be the main article in
the magazine. Then, underneath I’ll have 3 columns with 2 of them including page
numbers and names so the reader can find what page they want to go to. For a
couple of these pages, I will include an image to go with the article so the reader has
an insight to what it is and to make the page look more interesting instead of loads

2. of writing. I will stick to the colour scheme and use the same colours that I used on
my front cover so it carries on with the theme of a rock magazine.
Initial ideas about double page spread: On one of the pages, I will place my main
image there with the text on the opposite page which makes the layout look neat
instead of having the text all over the place. To achieve this too, I will be using rule of
thirds just like I did on my contents page. On the page with the text, the headline will
be big and bold at the top and will be the biggest text on the page so it stands out.
Then, the sub-headline will be placed under the headline in a smaller font to give the
reader an insight to what the text is about and hopefully it will draw them in even
more to read the actual text. Underneath this, I plan to have 3 columns of text lined
up next to each other.
Initial ideas about photographs: In my magazine, I will be including at least 4
photographs. The image on my front cover will be a mid shot because I want the
viewer to focus on the facial expressions as well as being able to see some of the
clothing and body language too. I plan to have a main image on the contents page
that shows the main article that was on the front cover. Then, I will include 2 or 3
more little images too which go with other articles listed on the page. Finally, for the
double page spread, I want to have just one main image on one side of the page so
then I can place the text on the opposite side.
