2. Contents of the Anterior Fascial
Compartment of the Forearm
• Muscles:
• A superficial group : consisting of the pronator
teres, the flexor carpi radialis, the palmaris
longus, and the flexor carpi ulnaris.
• An intermediate group : consisting of the
flexor digitorum superficialis; and a
• Deep group : consisting of the flexor pollicis
longus, the flexor digitorum profundus, and the
pronator quadratus

3. • Blood supply to the muscles: Ulnar and radial
arteries
• Nerve supply to the muscles:
• All the muscles are supplied by the median
nerve and its branches, except the flexor carpi
ulnaris and the medial part of the flexor
digitorum profundus, which are supplied by
the ulnar nerve

5. Pronator Teres
• Origin
• Humeral head : Medial epicondyle of humerus
• Ulnar head : Medial border of coronoid
process of ulna
• Action
• Lateral aspect of shaft of radius
• Nerve supply : Median nerve
• Action : Pronation and flexion of forearm

7. Flexor carpi radialis
• Origin
• Medial epicondyle of humerus
• Insertion
• Bases of second and third metacarpal bones
• Nerve supply
• Median nerve
• Action
• Flexes and abducts hand at wrist joint

9. Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
• Origin
• Humeral head : Medial epicondyle of humerus
• Ulnar head : Medial aspect of olecranon
process and posterior border of ulna
• Insertion
• Pisiform bone, hook of the hamate, base at
fifth metacarpal bone
• Nerve supply Ulnar nerve
• Action Flexes and adducts hand at wrist joint

11. Palmaris longus
• Origin
• Medial epicondyle of humerus
• Insertion
• Flexor retinaculum and palmar aponeurosis
• Nerve supply Median nerve
• Action Flexes hand

15. Flexor Digitorum Superficialis
• Origin
• Humeroulnar head : Medial epicondyle of
humerus; medial border of coronoid process of
ulna
• Radial head : Oblique line on anterior surface
of shaft of radius
• Insertion Middle phalanx of medial four
fingers

16. • Nerve supply: Median nerve
• Action: Flexes middle phalanx of fingers and
assists in flexing proximal phalanx and hand

18. Flexor digitorum profundus
• Origen
• Anteromedial surface of shaft of ulna
• Insertion
• Distal phalanges of medial four fingers

19. • Action
• Flexes distal phalanx of fingers; then assists in
flexion of middle and proximal phalanges and
wrist
• Nerve supply
• Ulnar (medial half) and median (lateral half)
nerves

21. Flexor pollicis longus
• Origin Anterior surface of shaft of radius
• Insertion Distal phalanx of thumb
• Action Flexes distal phalanx of thumb
• Nerve supply Anterior interosseous
branch of median nerve

24. Pronator quadratus
• Origin:Anterior surface of shaft of
ulnar
• Insertion:Anterior surface of shaft of
radius
• Action: Pronates forearm
• Nerve Supply: Anterior interosseous
branch of median nerve

the Forearm

29. Brachioradialis
• Origin :Lateral supracondylar ridge of
humerus
• Insertion :Base of styloid process of radius
• Action: Flexes forearm at elbow joint
rotates forearm to the midprone position
• Nerve supply: Radial nerve

32. Extensor carpi radialis longus
• Origin:Lateral supracondylar ridge of
humerus
• Insertion:Posterior surface of base of second
metacarpal bone
• Action:Extends and abducts hand at wrist
joint
• Nerve supply:Radial nerve

36. Extensor carpi radialis brevis
• Origin:Lateral epicondyle of humerus
• Insertion:Posterior surface of base of third
metacarpal bone
• Action:Extends and abducts hand at wrist
joint
• Nerve supply:Deep branch of radial nerve

38. Extensor digitorum
• Origin:Lateral epicondyle of humerus
• Insertion: Middle and distal phalanges of
medial four fingers
• Action: Extends fingers and hand
• Nerve supply: Deep branch of radial nerve

40. Extensor digiti minimi
• Origin: Lateral epicondyle of humerus
• Insertion: Extensor expansion of little finger
• Action: Extends metacarpal phalangeal joint of
little finger
• Nerve supply: Deep branch of radial nerve

42. Extensor carpi ulnaris
• Origin: Lateral epicondyle of humerus
• Insertion: Base of fifth metacarpal bone
• Action: Extends and adducts hand at wrist
joint
• Nerve supply: Deep branch of radial nerve

44. Anconeus
• Origin: Lateral epicondyle of humerus
• Insertion: Lateral surface of olecranon
process of ulna
• Action: Extends elbow joint
• Nerve supply: Radial nerve

46. Supinator
• Origin: Lateral epicondyle of humerus, anular
ligament of proximal radioulnar joint, and ulna
• Insertion :Neck and shaft of radius
• Action: Supination of forearm
• Nerve supply: Deep branch of radial nerve

49. Abductor pollicis longus
• Origin :Posterior surface of shafts of radius
and ulna
• Insertion :Base of first metacarpal bone
• Action: Abducts and extends thumb
• Nerve supply:Deep branch of radial nerve

51. Extensor pollicis brevis
• Origin: Posterior surface of shaft of radius
• Insertion: Base of proximal phalanx of
thumb
• Action: Extends metacarpophalangeal
joints of thumb
• Nerve supply: Deep branch of radial nerve

53. Extensor pollicis longus
• Origin: Posterior surface of shaft of ulna
• Insertion :Base of distal phalanx of thumb
• Action:Extends distal phalanx of thumb
• Nerve supply: Deep branch of radial nerve

55. Extensor indicis
• Origin: Posterior surface of shaft of ulna
• Insertion :Extensor expansion of index
finger
• Action: Extends metacarpophalangeal joint
of index finger
• Nerve Supply: Deep branch of radial nerve
