A force is a push or pull that can cause an object to be in motion or change motion. The SI unit of force is the Newton. Forces have both magnitude and direction. Common forces include gravitational, tension, upthrust, magnetic, centrifugal, cohesive/adhesive, surface tension, molecular, electric, nuclear, and electrostatic forces. The effects of a force can be to start or change the motion of an object. Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the gravitational force on an object. Weight depends on mass and gravitational field strength.
