The Inside Job
ADMAP REVIEW OF THE MOVIE INSIDE JOB Rohan Rambhia | PGP 10 155 Inside Job is an
exemplary recount of how administrator s role when exploited to form risky administrative strategies
by means of faulty processes lead to a crisis of the stature of the recession of 2008. It is a
comprehensive documentary which narrates the history of the collapse, not only going into great,
informative depth about the risk based strategies that put the global economy on the line, but looks
back to the rise of the financial industry. The biggest question which the documentary arouses is that
knowing what happened, why are the miscreants not being punished? As the director, Charles
Ferguson, himself stated while receiving the Oscar, Forgive me, I must ... Show more content on

Ferguson is that of the derivatives market. The high risks that began with subprime lending were
transferred from investors to other investors who, due to questionable rating practices, falsely believed
that the investments were safe. And these rating were done by Academicians Consultants who were
given millions of dollars for these false ratings. On being questioned by the law about the validity and
basis for those ratings, the only answer which was given was that at that time they believed (or were
made to believe) that those investments were good. Due to these false ratings the lenders were pushed
to sign up mortgages without regard to risk, or even favoring higher interest rate loans, since, once
these mortgages were packaged together, the risk was disguised. According to the film, the resulting
products would often have AAA ratings, equal to U.S. government bonds. The products could then be
used even by investors such as retirement funds which

Comparing John Wilmot s A Satire Against Reason And Mankind
John Wilmot, a writer from the seventeenth century, uses several literary devices to drive his point
home. One of his most famous poems, A Satire Against Reason and Mankind , is unique in many
ways. It uses several literary devices that create a paradox between the author s words and the satirical
nature of his razor sharp wit. During Wilmot s time, several authors such as John Locke and Thomas
Hobbes use their own wit and intelligence to define, attack, and attempt to explain reason. Not only is
reason a common theme among the writers of this century, each writer is tied to the church and
religion. Wilmot s use of satire to destroy the purpose of reason creates an irony through metaphors
and verse that needs wit and reasoning to understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wilmot contradicts himself as he introduces two specific interlocutors into the framework of the
narrative. These interlocutors, the clergy (band and beard) and the adversary, create chaos and
simplicity irony in and of itself to reconstruct mankind s ability to reason. The clergy uses a simple
and direct approach to explaining why mankind was given the ability to reason. God himself intended
for mankind to rule over animals and beasts. Wilmot states, Whom his creator took such care to make,
/ that from himself he did the image take, / and this fair frame in shining reason dressed, / to dignify
his nature above beasts (2304). This irony shows that man was given the very thing that Wilmot rails
against reason. As for the adversary, his response to Wilmot s argument fabricates a narrative filled
with chaos. Knight explores this issue further and he states, The adversary s remarks represent a break
in both the content and structure of the poem. They give the speaker a specific position against which
to argue and a specific audience against which to direct his arguments ( Knight 256). This implies that
the interlocutor was created to help Wilmot expound on his argument through a continued

The String Theory
Sub atomic particles, known as quarks, electrons, photons, and neutrinos were strewn across
expanding space. Equal amounts of matter and antimatter particles began to collide and annihilate
each other. Gravity, strong and weak nuclear forces, and electromagnetic forces soon came into play.
As the universe started to cool, fundamental particles called quarks began to smash together forming
protons and neutrons. They, in turn, merged to create the nuclei of simple elements, beginning with
hydrogen, helium, and lithium. This primordial soup contained the building blocks for everything in
the universe. Voilà, the universe was born.
Matter and energy continued to expand. Static electricity and gravity brought the expanding matter
together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Strings would also give rise to the forces of nature: gravity, strong and weak nuclear forces, and
electromagnetism. Atoms contain protons that produce a positive charge, neutrons that produce a
neutral charge, and electrons that produce a negative charge. According to the theory, electrons and
quarks, which make up protons and neutrons, were produced by minuscule, one dimensional,
randomly behaving, vibrating strings of energy. A property of matter or force of nature would be the
result when the strings vibrate and interact with each other.
Not so fast, physicists filled blackboard after blackboard with mathematical equations to prove that the
theory was consistent with the force of gravity. Did not happen. A theory had to be established that
was compatible with the gravitational forces in the enormous universe and the microscopic world. The
modified theory had to include quantum gravity, a high frequency, string vibration that would produce
a graviton. A graviton is responsible for curving surrounding space. The Super String Theory soon
replaced the Not so super String Theory. Particle/wave duality of matter and energy on the quantum
level joined the mix, boson/fermion partnerships known as supersymmetry brought the wine, quantum
gravity served the hors d oeuvres, and the Mother of all parties got underway.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder Paper
Narcissism
Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their
own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. (Mayo Clinic, 2014)
Like other personality disorders, narcissists have traits that cause them to feel and behave in socially
distressing ways, limiting their ability to function in important areas of life, such as school, work, and
relationships. What may not be apparent to the outside eye is that there is a very fragile and friable self
esteem that is very thin skinned. Those with this disorder think very highly of themselves and have a
hard time seeing anyone else s views, because they believe their way is the best way. They have self
centered fantasies that are high and wide of actual reality. Receiving criticism for them, even in the
slightest, can be so detrimental. You may never see the extreme sensitivity to the criticism because it is
often kept so quiet and hidden from others.
It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish a true narcissistic person apart from a person who is highly
confident. They may look similar, although a narcissist is far more in true depth with themselves and
sees others as inferior. The disorder makes them feel so superior and highly of themselves that they
have the potential to put themselves in danger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On average, more men are affected by the disorder than women. Being raised in a home with severe
criticism at an early age can put someone at risk for this disorder. There is no known cause for
narcissism other than being exposed to the disorder or being heavily criticized at a young age.
Fortunately, there is hope for those who have narcissistic personality disorder. With therapy, the
thought process can be changed and they can regain normal thoughts. The earlier the disorder is
diagnosed and therapy is started, the better the outcome will likely

A Brief Note On The 18th And 18th Centuries
Matthew Cappock
The 17th and 18th centuries were a period in Europe where the country was driven by agriculture.
New ideas and technologies were invented which led to an increase in crops leading to The British
Agricultural Revolution. As a direct result of the crop yields, small landowners weren t able to profit
therefore leaving their farms and migrating to smaller cities where they mostly worked in factories.
This led to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Europe. Although there are many changes that
took place during the 17th and 18th centuries, the increased crop yields came about in part because of
new advances such as the Northfolk Crop Rotation, The Rotherham Plow, the seed drill, and enclosure
which negatively affected small farmers by increasing production which meant less farmers were
needed to supply the population. However, positive effects such as less competition and increased
profits benefited large landowners and ultimately led to the industrial revolution.
The Northfolk Crop Rotation dramatically affected crop production in Europe. This system allowed
for farmers to make better profits. It replaced the older three course rotation with a four course
rotation. In the first season, farmers would plant clover which the livestock would eat. The farmers
would then sell the healthy animals on the market and begin growing wheat which would also be sold
on the market during the second season. During the third season, the farmers plant turnips which

Nephropore Areas Of Sexually Mature Lobster Case Study
This article was referenced in 5.1 Hay et al, and its focus is around studying nephropore areas of
sexually mature lobsters. The goal behind this study is to better identify the presence of these
structures which are known to produce chemical signals in conjunction with the release of their urine.
In the lobster Homarus Americanus, urine signals are used as a form of chemical communication,
males use urine in the determination of dominance over other males as well as to allow females choice
of dominant males. On the other hand Homarus Americanus females urine actually reduces the
incidence of male aggression and increases male mating behavior. This article is more focused on the
masses of rosette glands identified from all animals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any figures beyond the set up of these dissections are just to help illustrate what the Rosette glands
actually looked like, or a better understanding of the anatomy behind a cross sectioned nephropore (fig
2a b). The results from these cross section figures showed that rosette glands could be identified in the
nephropre areas of every examined lobster. Subtle differences were found within these rosettes, one
example being the cells within the rosettes either being rounded with many secretory granules, or
thinner cells with smaller granules with spaces between the cells. Other rosettes were more organized
into clusters of different sizes, and found within the connective tissue. These clusters were categorized
into two separate gland complexes, on medial to the ureter and the other later (fig 3a b). Other
experiments focused on within this article looked at the size and orientation of these gland complexes
in an effort to better understand subtle differences from the normal nephropores, one example being
some lobsters having anterior clusters which release the product a different way. Although this was far
from the norm of the lobsters studied, they found that the glands appeared to be released through the
exterior of the animal, not via the urinary bladder like every other nephropore complex. One other
hypothesis tested was that nephropore rosette glands produce a bacteriostatic

D: Evaluation of the Experimental Design
D1 Comments on the appropriateness of the observations or measurements with justification
of/specific reference to precision of the apparatus used. In my experiment, I ensured that I used the
most accurate and precise apparatus possible to ensure the results obtained were accurate. For
measuring the gas volume, I used a gas syringe. A gas syringe is a special low friction syringe for
measuring the volume of gas produced or to insert gas into a reaction. I chose to use the gas syringe as
it is very appropriate and accurate, allowing me to measure the gas volume to an accuracy of 0.5 cm3.
My choice in using the gas syringe as a measurement tool allowed me to ensure my results were

These could be down to variances in the control of controlled variables between groups or different
methods or techniques used to control them. A clear and easily understandable variable that would
affect this mean would be the rate of the swirl or vigour with which it was carried out, for example if a
greater rate of swirling was employed by one group, this would produce a higher value and thus this
value would affect the overall mean, as a swirl pattern with more vigour provides more kinetic energy
to the enzyme and substrate, thus increasing the chance of successful collisions, which subsequently
increases the rate of reaction, biasing the results. Another inconsistency would be the accuracy to
which the minute time period was observed. Depending on the methods employed by each individual
and thus their reaction time and dexterity (example of this would be the time taken to place the bung
in the flask, which could vary from person to person), the results may vary as the gas volume may
increase or decrease depending on the person or even the trial. On this basis, I do believe that a further
trial for pH 7 would be required to ensure a more consistent result is achieved across the

Examples Of Escapism In The Glass Menagerie
Neil Gaiman, a renowned English author, questioned the thought provoking line, If you were trapped
in an impossible situation, in an unpleasant place, with people who meant you ill, and someone
offered you a temporary escape, why wouldn t you take it? Gaiman advocates towards the idea of
when life becomes stressful, people tend to find a temporary escape to alleviate anxiety and avoid the
harsh realities of the world. In his play, The Glass Menagerie, placed in St.Louis during the Great
Depression, Tennessee Williams creates a story that demonstrates this theme of escapism. Tom
Wingfield, an aspiring poet who steals away from his mundane life with alcohol and going to the
movies, narrates a memory illustrating the familial tensions between him, his mother Amanda, and his
younger sister, Laura. Amanda is stuck in an imaginary time loop, constantly reminiscing about her
golden days in Blue Mountain, where she attracted seventeen gentlemen callers. Her state of mind was
caused by her marriage to a man who chose world travel over his family. Now, she takes comfort in
governing her children s lives and reliving her youth. Tom s extremely reserved 23 year old sister,
Laura, has lived a reclusive life due to insecurities about her limp. She seeks safety through tending to
her treasured glass menagerie and listening to music from a Victrola. Utilizing a myriad of recurring
motifs such as the Wingfield apartment fire escape and deception in his play, Williams spins a tale that

Womanhood In The Latin American Culture
In latin america one of the most celebrated and well known events is when a girl reaches the age of
fifteen. No matter the difference in details from country to country the overall purpose is to celebrate
the coming of age, so to speak. It is something that has been glorified over many generations because
it signifies that you have entered womanhood in the latin american culture. At the tender age of five
years old I actively participated as the flower girl that walks in before the court and the quinceanera.
From that moment on I fell in love with what would be my destiny in ten years time, unaware of all
the details that play a role in hosting such a big celebration.
Essentially my godparents were celebrated along with my fifteen years

Personal Narrative On Taliyah

Twelve years earlier, I had trouble drawing stick figures. The idea of transferring three dimensional
objects onto paper was wizardry. It was mystifying to watch people know exactly where to place their

A Study On Coors Brewing Company Essay
Executive Summary This case study is about Coors Brewing Company and their want to implement a
balanced scorecard (BSC) approach to their processes. Ken Rider, the designer of the project, has been
tasked with the job of exploring the BSC method and modifying an answer to their operations. The
goal of the BSC is to not only strengthen the recent Computer Integrated logistics (CIL) project, but to
guarantee compensation of staff is tied on to their contribution to the firm s strategic vision. This case
study looks at the evidences at hand and delivers 3 primary alternatives: to do nothing which might
probably widen the benchmarking gaps within the future, to implement the BSC immediately that
risks duplicating some of the processes of the CIL project or to require a wait and see approach which
might offer the firm 3 years to work out the success of the CIL project before implementing the BSC.
In weighing every different, it is determined that the suitable course is to start implementation of the
BSC immediately because the risks of waiting are too detrimental. The analysis recommends a
structure around which the BSC could be constructed and goes on to answer some of the questions
posed by workers about the logistics of applying BSC and how it may affect them individually. The
recommendation contains the use of an EVA analysis to construct the financial perspective along with
targeted yardsticks for the other measurements (wherever possible). Answer to Part 1

The Pros And Cons Of Nike
There are hundreds of name brands that millions around the world use to represent who they are as a
person and their personality. Typically name brands have celebrities, athletes, and models broadcast
the clothes by wearing them and making commercials so the people behind the screens can look
exactly like the people wearing them first. There are companies like Nike that are known to mainly be
a sports name brand company and is loved and worn by millions. Unfortunately, many do not know
what exactly happens behind the scenes where the clothes, shoes, and accessories are being made.
Many name brand companies have fallen under certain accusations of taking part in manufacturing
their own products in sweatshops. These sweatshops are where workers of the company are employed
in horrible and unsafe working conditions as well as working long hours at low wages. Unfortunately,
one of the most popular companies in America is now being kept under surveillance for their unfair
labor practices. This company that is well known has now damaged its reputation, specifically through
their company s image and their sales. The famous Nike brand has now fallen through the cracks.
Sources state ex employees and present day employees have filed reports of Nike s harsh and unjust
working conditions as far back as the 1990 s. Although Nike denied it at times, there was solid proof
that children under the age of 16 were also working in these conditions, as most adults would. These

Analysis Of The Movie The Woman Of Black
On the 31st of March we watched the Woman in Black at the Fortune theatre in London, as part of our
unit two assessment. The play is about Arthur Kipps who tells the gripping story of the terrible events
he survived when he encountered the woman in black. He learns about the death of Mrs Drablow and
travels to the town of Crythin Gifford. Here he meets many petrified faces, too scared to about the
woman in black. Through the story of Mr Kipps we learn that a woman named Jennet Humfrye had a
child unmarried and was forced to leave her child with her sister Mrs Drablow, years later Jennet plans
to run away with her son but before she able to, the tragic event of his death occurs. Due to the
unbearable grief Jennet suffers from a terrible wasting disease leading to her death. Instantly after her
death she returns as the Woman in Black and haunts the people of the town who are too afraid to speak
of her name. After hearing this story he leaves the town, many years later after getting married and
having a child he thinks he sees the woman in black again and on that day Mr Kipps wife Stella and
child die.

The Molarity Of The Sucrose To Find The Osmotic Potential...
The aim of this experiment was to use the molarity of the sucrose to the find the osmotic potential of
the potato.
Most of the results of the experiment show that as the molarity of sucrose in the solution increases, the
percent change in mass of the potato decreases. This is due to osmosis, water moves from a higher
water concentration area to a lower water concentration area. From the results table, one can see that
the mass of potato in the 0.1M sucrose solution increased by 13%, and the mass decreased by 28% in
the 1.0M sucrose solution.
The results supported the hypothesis that the osmotic potential of potato would be somewhere that
intermediates between a dilute solution and concentrated solution. When the change in mass of the

The Geography Of Ancient Egypt
Ancient Egypt was one of the most powerful and innovative civilizations. As one of the six
civilizations to arise independently, Egypt eventually became one of the most influential nations that
lasted over three thousand years, from 3000 B.C to around 30 B.C Egypt boasted of strong leaders, a
rich culture, a hierarchical society, and the source of much of it s wealth, the Nile. The Nile provided
the Egyptians with necessities like food, water, transportation, building supplies, and more. Using the
resources they were provided with and their knowledge, the Egyptians were able to create a unique
civilization that has been able to be preserved and acknowledged as one of the most powerful
civilizations to ever exist on Earth. The geography ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition, the nile flooded annually renewing the lands with rich black soil and helped support life
and the growth of a great civilization (English Online). All aspects of the geography of Ancient Egypt
were imperative for it to evolve and prosper as an Ancient civilization. The government of Ancient
Egypt brought order and stability to the civilization, while also being combined with religion. Egypt s
government revolved around a pharaoh, who was seen as the head of state and the divine
representation of the gods on earth. In order to ensure the welfare of the people, the Pharaoh would
have advisors, priests, officials, and administrators. The land of Egypt was divided into 42 Nomes, or
city states, which were led by Noble governors who were appointed by the Pharaoh (TimeMaps). The
legal system of Ancient Egypt was based on common sense and followed the teaching of Ma at, the
goddess of justice. Taxation was also heavily implemented on the Ancient Egyptians to allow the
wealthier people of society to maintain lavish lifestyles (Aldokkan). The military was not a big part of
Egyptian life, and was not very advanced. In ancient Egypt, the rulers were usually the son of the
current pharaoh or the declared heirs. Pharaohs had a main responsibility, to maintain universal
harmony, using their absolute power. Therefore, rulers in Ancient Egypt were more assertive and self
assured than harsh. To reiterate the combination of religion and

consumer. The process from which the product (car) proceeds from manufacturer to consumer is that

manufacturer and sells them from the lot or storefront. This placement and presentation of the product
has proved largely successful. The tangible product is viewed, test driven and purchased from the

Rather than solely online companies, who may only offer ghost storefronts with no inventory and little
reputation to defend. (Pitta, Franzak Fowler 2006) Value creation has been described as the difference
between the amount that the consumer is willing to pay for a product and the costs of providing the
product. Value can also be added to the product through outside or support (Porter, 1985) activities
such as brand awareness, speed of delivery, after sales service. Resource Based View (RBV) theorists
argue that information technology (IT) resources can be used today in an online environment to enable
a firm to improve efficiency regardless of whether mimicked by competitors, or may yield
performance impacts unique to a firm relative to its competitors. (Melville, Kraemer Gurbaxani 2004)
A major factor in RBV and enhancing value creation better than a company s competitors is that of
competitive heterogeneity. This refers to enduring and systematic performance differences among
relatively close rivals. (Hoopes, Madsen Walker, 2003) Resources are the tangible and intangible

The Bombing Of The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building
The event that I chose was the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown
Oklahoma City by an ex Army soldier and security guard named Timothy McVeigh. He parked a
rented Ryder truck in front of the building loaded with a powerful bomb made out of a deadly cocktail
of agricultural fertilizer, diesel fuel, and other chemicals. The bomb went off at 9:02 a.m. When the
smoke cleared the area looked like a war zone. Half of the building had been reduced to rubble,
surrounding cars were incinerated and nearby buildings were damaged or destroyed. The death toll
was very devastating: 168 people, including 19 children were killed that day not to mention several
hundred more injured in the blast. The bombing was considered the worst act of homegrown terrorism
in the nation s history (fbi.gov).
On April 20, axle of the Ryder truck was found, investigators were able to find the vehicle
identification number that was traced to a body shop in Junction City, Kansas.Employees of the show
were able to help investigators with a description of the man who rented the van. After agents showed
the drawing around town, a local hotel employee supplied a name: Tim McVeigh.
On April 21 it was discovered that McVeigh was already in jail. He had been pulled over about 80
miles north of Oklahoma City by a Oklahoma State Trooper who noticed a missing license plate on his
car. It was 90 minutes after the bombing. Agents found traces of the chemicals that were used for

Guernica Goya s Third Of May Meaning
Guernica was created by Pablo Picasso in 1937. The Spainsh Civil war is the cause of making
Guernica. The Basque Country village in northern Spain is were the bombing took place, government
warplanes is how the German and Italy destroyed the area. The German bombers were supposedly
affiliated with National forces and General Franco during the war. Pablo Picasso s painting Guernica
uniquely executed showing innocent people suffering during the bombing. His piece became so
popular, that it became a major antiwar symbol. Guernica became very popular which helped tell the

The background of the paintings and some visual elements are the same when it comes to the meaning
of the painting. To a non art student the visual at first glance is very important to set the tone of the
paintings. This helps the viewer understand the groundwork of the subject matter. Picasso s Guernica
is very representational but I can also see so abstract aspects in a weird way. Goya s Third of May is
naturalistic and representational but unlike Guernica we can clearly see the people who are in charge
causing the struggle. In both paintings the value of the light plays important role in the paintings.
Picasso uses shades of black and white to show all the different aspects and the painting. Goya uses
the value of the light to direct our attention to the main events in the painting. The lines in Guernica is
more curvy, where as Goya s third of May has more straight lines which effects the flow of the
painting. In both of the paintings the background of the paintings are very similar. People, places,
animals and things are being destroyed because of ruling issues. In Goya s painting to can see
hopelessness and suffering on the man s face while begging for his life. Both of the paintings we can
feel the senseless violence that was depicted. The violence that took place was recorded and reported
in the paintings, both of the artist wanted to make us aware of the violence that took place in their

Character Analysis Of Bertha Mason In Jane Eyre
Jane Erye Essay Brief Character in Novel Bertha Mason, although a minor character in Charlotte
Bronte s Jane Eyre , played a crucial role in the love story between Jane and Rochester and gives a
deeper understanding of how mentally impaired people were treated at the time. She is necessary to
Jane and Rochester s imminent marriage and her actions lead the two to reconcile. Her motives and
the causes for behavior are unclear, besides her obvious jealousy towards Jane and betrayal she felt
from Rochester. Not only that, but Bertha also symbolizes everything Jane is not, mirroring her in a
way as a polar opposite. At the start of the novel the reader knows nothing about Bertha mason. She
does not make an appearance till Jane becomes aware of a strong smell of burning coming from
Rochester s room. Although she suspects Grace to have caused it, we find that Bertha set fire to his
room. Rochester simply tries to hide her existence because he wants nobody to know of her, but
cannot get rid of her. But that appears at this time it seems because Jane is troubled, a sort of doubling
image. Bertha is constantly seen as an obstacle standing in Jane and Rochester s way of happiness and
marriage. Her instability is illustrated in an extremely animalistic manner. Bertha threatens to drain
[Mason s] heart , similar to an evil being or vampire (ch.20). Again, Bertha is described as the polar
opposite of Jane, as someone who acts out against typical norms and does how she pleases. So

Public Relations Between Organizations And Their Publics
When the term public relations are heard, there is not an immediate understanding of the career, let
alone its writings. The lines of the responsibilities of a public relations professional are often blurred
and confused. However, the Public Relations Society of America composed a specific definition to
help with the confusion: public relations are a strategic communication process that builds mutually
beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics ( About Public Relations ). Breaking
down the definition a bit shows exactly what public relations is about mutually beneficial relationships
( About Public Relations ). Professionals work to create and maintain various relationships, whether it
be with journalists or clients, that will yield positive results for all parties involved. In an interview,
Vallerie, who works in public relations, revealed she interacts with upwards of 20 different people
daily (Mackillop). Publics are generally thought of as the general public population; this is true to an
extent for public relations. A public is anyone who ever has or ever will form an opinion about the
client (Roost). This means that it is possible to have more than one public that a professional is dealing
with for their work.
Public relations are unlike other means of publicity, such as advertising and marketing. However,
companies tend to push public relations to the side to focus more on those methods. Public relations
are earned exposure, while

The Sign Of The Four, And The Red Badge Of Courage, By...
Great Expectations , The Sign of the Four , and The Red Badge of Courage are books written with
literary elements as building block for storytelling. Each first chapter uses character development,
setting description, and many types of conflict to interest the reader. Even though all of the stories
contain these elements, some are used more than others. Great Expectations and The Red Badge of
Courage focus on the setting and character description more than The Sign of The Four where the
element on conflict is heavily used. In the first chapter of Great Expectations the reader is introduced
to Pip who is looking at the tombstones of his birth family that he never knew in the graveyard of a
church on top of a hill. His mother, father, and five infant babies were all buried together as told in the
story (Dickens,2016). Charles Dickens chose to implement the setting of the story while also
introducing some of the characters. The story uses direct characterization when a man appears to
threaten Pip. The man is described as beaten up with torn shoes and wet clothes and a knife that he
uses to scare Pip which leads to conflict (Dickens,2016). The type of conflict that occurs is classified
as man versus man. Dickens uses conflict to describe what Pip looks like when the man steals a piece
of bread from Pip because he is hungry and then threatens to cut Pips cheek off and eat it. He then
describes himself in first person that he does not have much fat on his body (Dickens,2016). Two
more characters are introduced when the man asks Pip who he lives with since his parents are dead.
Pip responds and says that he lives with his sister and the man she is married to who happens to be a
blacksmith (Dickens,2016). When the man put the knife to Pips throat and told him to fetch him a file,
it motivated Pip because his life depended on it (Dickens,2016). His behavior towards the conflict is
that he obeys what the man has told him to do and agrees to his terms (Dickens,2016). Arthur Doyle s
book The Sign of The Four it is shown that conflict and character development are heavily focused on
when telling the story. The reader is first introduced to a main character who witnesses a man named

Quinceaner Culture, Culture And Traditions In American...
Coming of age birthdays exist throughout many cultures and have evolved in different ways
depending on the region or religion they came from. Besides the traditional American sweet 16 , there
are other very popular traditions that are diversified by culture, religion, and by the day it takes place.
Americans celebrate many of these different cultural birthdays because anyone who lives in the US
has the right to practice any religion they see fit. Most birthdays have very similar features such as
giving gifts to the man and, or woman of honor. There are also many differences in these traditions,
some of which are considerably more family based than others, such as the Quinceanera .
A Quinceanera is a Catholic, Hispanic, celebration for when a Hispanic girl turns 15. The 15 year old
receives a special birthday that represents them transforming from a girl into a woman. This tradition
was brought to Mexico by Spanish conquerors and has remained a tradition of South America and
Mexico ever since. It is only practiced in Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central, South, and North American
cultures. It is a very formal event; so formal in fact that most of the celebration is treated like a
wedding. It is so wedding like that most Quinceanera parties gets three layered wedding cakes for this
non wedding tradition. The celebration always has pink and white being the main colors of it. as both

Bugs Bunny Commercial Analysis
Imagine audiences sitting in the movie theater trying to escape from the looming hardships of World
War II. They sit and watch as the commercials begin to play when one of the most familiar tunes in
animation begins. The commercial presents itself deceptively using the classic Looney Tunes curtain
opening and theme music with the simple title of Bugs Bunny. The only hint at the true purpose of
advertising at this point is the producer listing of the U.S. Treasury Dept. Defense Savings Staff. The
curtains quickly open with an approaching Bugs Bunny miming the fife with his carrot as The Girl I
Left Behind plays in the background. This is all set against a redrawing of the classic American
painting The Spirit of 76. Bugs Bunny then begins to eat the carrot he s been holding, when he
suddenly begins the song Any Bonds Today? . Suddenly, the purpose of the commercial is finally
revealed to the audience, with Bugs song telling people to buy war bonds. All throughout this he
gestures, points and moves with an animated flair for the audience. He even exits and reenters frame
with an Uncle Sam costume, eventually beginning to act like he s passing out bonds to the audience.
Until, with an animated twirl Bugs Bunny appears with blackface and a different singing voice, a
parody of the blackface performance Al Jolson did in the movie The Jazz Singer. Finally, the picture
pulls in close on Bugs face as he wipes away the paint and once the picture pulls back out the
backdrop has changed. It shows a combat scene full of planes and ships as Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig
appear to help close the advertisement with singing and dancing. As the song ends a simple war bonds
ad pulls into frame. It now presents a Minuteman on the left and texts that reads For Defense Buy
United States Savings Bonds and Stamps. The commercial relies heavily on its ethos and pathos to
convince the audience into buying war bonds, using very little logos.
Furthermore, ethos is used by the commercial with the use of Bugs Bunny as the appeal for the
audience. At this time in American history Bugs Bunny was one the most famous animated characters
often considered fun for the whole family. Also with most fathers gone off to fight in the war the

Proprietary Technologies And Infrastructural Technologies
In 2003, Carr published a controversial article IT Doesn t Matter that put IT in a different light. Carr
makes a distinction between proprietary technologies and infrastructural technologies. He argues that
proprietary technologies are those that can be actually or effectively owned by a single company
(Carr, 2013, p. 42). Proprietary technologies can create strategic advantage as long as they remain
protected, and can provide companies with a lot of profit. Meanwhile, Infrastructural technologies
provide greater value when shared. Technologies move from proprietary to infrastructure as they
mature.
Moreover, Carr asserts that IT has lost its strategic value. He argues that IT is no longer strategic
because it has stopped to be scarce goods. In addition, he mentions that profit margins on IT related
innovations will disappear. This argument is based on capital intensive goods such as railroads and
steam engines. I disagree with this statement. IT should not be compared to such goods. The marginal
cost of IT products does not increase with greater scale. Thus, any business that can decrease marginal
cost by installing IT can make IT investments profits large and gain improved strategic value.
Furthermore, Carr argues that IT is primarily transport technology, and because everyone got access to
IT, it s no longer offers an advantage. I disagree with Carr. IT provides the primary means for
increasing the companies knowledge capital. IT helps businesses manage the

Sunset Howard Dishonesty Quotes
Sunset Boulevard is a film noir movie that was released in 1950. When looked at, the main character
Joe Gillis, portrayed by William Holden, can be seen as an anti hero. Joe shows his anti heroic
behavior in many ways. For example, he is dishonest, he uses the people around him, and he also is
only focused on elevating himself. One of the many examples of the dishonesty of Joe. One of the
most notable examples of his is when he meets Norma Desmond, portrayed by Gloria Swanson. He
starts out being noble by telling her that she should rethink let him look over the script, however, he
quickly becomes crooked. He tells her falsehoods to try and extort money out of her. This transforms
into him taking advantage of the situation.
He starts by taking advantage of Norma as the movie continues. Again, Joe starts being somewhat
noble by trying to tell Norma that he does not need to move into the house but stay at his apartment.
But, this changes when Norma tells him that everything has been paid for. He quickly drops the
argument and starts to live there. He also lets her buy him fancy suits and gifts without much if any
argument. It can also be seen that he is more concerned about the money and his elevating status ...

20th Century American Inventors
The beginning of the 20th century was marked by the increase in American inventors and
entrepreneurs of vehicles looking to have their products dominate the world. Famous manufacturers of
this era include Henry Ford (founder of Ford Motor Company), William Boeing (founder of The
Boeing Company), William C. Durant (founder of General Motors), and George M. Hendee (founder
of Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing), just to name a few. The designs produced under the
aforementioned manufacturers/inventors would prove to be true innovations, paving the way for
technology for decades to come and providing the basic designs on which modern vehicles are built

By 1920, the company was producing almost 30,000 bikes annually and was the world s largest

mild economic depression and Henry Ford s Model T began eating away at Harley Davidson s profits,
and the motorcycle company even had to reject a potential business partnership with Ford Motor
Company to protect themselves ( William S. Harley, Arthur ). The partnership involved manufacturing
Harley Davidson bikes with a sidecar to be used to deliver mail, albeit under the Ford name. Harley
Davidson rejected this deal, but later used the idea to sell their own bikes to the Postal Service (Harley
and the Davidsons). In 1914, the U.S Postal Service was using 4,800 Harley Davidson motorcycles to
deliver mail. To save their company, Harley designed motorcycles to be used by law enforcement
across the United States. By the mid 1920s, roughly 3,000 law enforcement personnel would be riding
a Harley Davidson, a testament to William Harley s engineering genius. In addition, Harley would
design bikes with larger engines and brakes which helped boost sales for a short while before the
Great Depression came. To counter the resulting plummet in sales, Harley gave the bikes a facelift,
designing new bikes with more appealing fuel tanks and adding both stylized eagle designs and the
company logo on the bikes to increase appeal. Around this time, bikes were also designed with
different color patterns ( William S.

Age Specific Reproduction
The effects of age specific breeding and matriarch presence on elephant reproduction
Introduction
Although Robinson et al. was not able to determine the overall the long term effects of early life
reproduction, they provided results that show the immediate effects of age specific reproduction. The
impact of reproduction on younger females is an important part of elephant survival, however, it is the
impact of reproduction over time that provides understanding of the future of elephant populations. In
order to show the later life effects of reproduction, Hayward et al. studied the survival of calves and
annual breeding success of elephants throughout their lives and into their older age.

produced a study that examined the later life consequences of breeding on a population, particularly
breeding early in life. Hayward et al. also used the Myanmar timber camp Elephas maximus to
perform the research, looking at the records of 416 reproductive captive born mothers and their
offspring. The elephants used were from 8 regions of the Myanmar timber camps with the youngest
breeding being 5 years of age and the oldest being 53. The mean age at the first birth of offspring was
19.48 years with the maximum number of lifetime calves being 10 calves. Hayward et al. discovered
that individuals who didn t produce calves before the age of 19 had lower calf survival than those who
produced one or more calves before the age of 19. Although beginning reproduction earlier in life is
correlated with a shorter lifespan, the cost is outweighed with higher annual breeding success as well
as increased calf survival (Hayward et al). The investment of energy and resources into breeding at an
early age increases the chance of calf survival but also results in shorter lifespans compared to those
who begin reproduction later in life (Hayward et al.). Based on the findings, the costs of early life
reproduction are offset by higher lifetime breeding success in younger elephants. The breeding success
of younger elephants can be attributed not only to early reproduction, but also to older females in a
herd. While Hayward et al. observes the effects of young

Smallpox is a virus that was first founded in ancient times. The virus?s proper name is Variola rex, and
it has various different forms as well as various symptoms. Among these forms are typical smallpox,

victims. Some of the typical symptoms of smallpox include red vesicles and pustules all over,
bleeding from all orifices of the body, swelling in the face, throat, and eyes, difficulty eating and

In the introductory stages of the rash the small bumps are filled with a clear fluid and are known as
vesicles, but as the virus progresses the vesicles become hard and scab over. The fluid inside the
vesicles turns into puss and the large bumps then become known as pustules. The rash becomes fully
developed between 12 and 14 days after the symptoms of the disease appear. As the disease follows its
course, symptoms become more and more severe and uncomfortable for the patient. Red spots on the
patient begin to turn black, while others turn white, the individual experiences strong delirium,
hemorrhages of blood at the anus, mouth, and nose, raw flesh from the stripping of the skin, and
fistulous ulcers in the ligaments, body, limbs, and joints. Smallpox is also associated with the
unbelievable amount of swelling and protuberance in the throat and eyes, which obstruct vision as
well as the ability to swallow and perform similar functions. The virus also causes the rotting of the
ligaments and bones.
Because the smallpox virus attacks the mucus membranes, bone marrow, and lymph nodes of the
body, most patients obtain the gruesome disfigurement of the face and nose and limbs.( Bollet
1987). The previous stage of the smallpox infection is known as the second stage, which is most

Oroonoko Analysis
Aphra Behn s Oroonoko is arguably one of the most tragic novels in British Literature. The love story
of two enslaved Surinam nobilities, who both meet their atrocious end, depicts shameful european
history in regards of slavery. The words painted white men as vile creatures who were known to be
dishonest and ruthless. Though one may say Behn s work brought light to a subject so taboo, others
argue that the novel plays into a racial narrative that minorities have struggled for centuries to break
free from. While Behn s explicit use of language expressed her disapproval of colonists, I believe her
work embodied the notion of whitewashing the text gain approval of a particular group. Considering
the fact, that Behn was the first women to live by her pen, and broke cultural norms, it is unclear if her
intention was enclosing a shock factor, or exercising her ability to challenge societal norms for the
greater good. Oroonoko describes how individuals are unable to be free people who grow

Humor In A Modest Proposal
The purpose of humor is to create happiness and relief. We use humor to talk about uncomfortable
situations or topics, some of us use it for self deprecation. While satire reveals social flaws, things that
need to be addressed, and serious problems within our society, humor just relieves pain or sadness in
the form of laughter. Because there are so many different kinds of humor there are so many different
ways it can be included in everyday things. Many different people, movies, t.v. shows, books, and
other writings use humor. People like Kevin Hart, t.v. shows like the office, and writings like A

because according to Richard Wrangham we are species designed to love meat .

cell grown in petri dishes and a single stem cell can produce a tremendous amount of meat. This is a

expected to affect air quality through several pathways, some of these pollutants can directly cause
respiratory diseases or exacerbate existing conditions in susceptible populations, such as children or

Descriptive Essay About Corn Maze
In the Declaration of Independence it states, mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are
sufferable,... and on October 8th, 2016 this became true. This day was not only the start of my
suffering, but tons of other people s too. It was around 7 o clock p.m. when a group of my friends and
I decided that we needed to come together and go out, and what better is there to do in early October
than visit a corn maze. After nearly an hour of planning around all ten people s schedules, we decided
we would leave around nine to arrive there during the scariest hours of night. We all met in Eaton
which is where we always met when we were going to carpool. Everyone arrived on time, smelling
strongly of bug spray which we would later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was a brilliant idea not to put me in front because my sense of direction is about as clear as a blind
bats. I m also not the type of person to bring to a corn maze, I was scared each time a person jumped
out or I heard a rustling in the distance. The air surrounding me was musty and smoky. There was a
strange, eerie feeling as we made our way out of the maze. In the distance we could see a large
trampoline and no one wanted to pass up that opportunity. We raced all the way to the large bouncy
giant just to find out they were closed. Confused, we looked at our phones to check the time and then
it all made sense, it was 11:30. Now, we started the mile hike back to the car. My feet were aching
from walking through the maze so I asked if we could take a small break. Right as we stopped
walking my phone started ringing. Confusion fell over me as I looked down to see my friend Lauren s
name pop up on the screen. I answered with a perplexed, Hello? .
On the other end of the phone there were muffled sobs she tried talking, but all I could hear was
gibberish. I tried to comfort her so she could calm down so she could tell me what was going on.
Seconds later she murmured, He s dead, Derek is dead. At this point I was so lost, in my state of panic,
I couldn t figure out who Derek was and what could have possibly happened to him.

Pc Persuasive Speech
WTSOB1TOC Have you ever gone away on holiday, but you couldn t bring your PC because it was
too big and you needed to unplug and untangle everything to even carry it? Or have you smashed the
desk your PC is on and the screen turned black? Or has there been a power cut and you want to play or
work but can t because PCs don t have batteries that charge with electricity? Well, that happens less
frequently with laptops so I ll talk about them and try to persuade you to make a change! The first
point is, They re small and easy to carry so you can take them with you. They re so short so then when
it s closed, you can bring your laptop without anyone knowing, whereas with a PC, even if you do
manage to untangle it, your parents might tell you off, and if they don t, when you get to your
destination it will be hard to plug all the plugs back into the power outlet. On the laptop side though,
you only need to plug in one or two plugs depending if you need an extension cable or not, and if you
didn t use the laptop on the journey there, you won t need to plug it in for 1 6 hours! ... Show more

Little Women Or Meg By Louisa May Alcott
Little Women or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy by Louisa May Alcott is a coming of age story about four
girls with all different personalities and different ways of going through the world. Alcott was
persuaded by a talented editor from the Roberts Brothers firm to write a story for girls, and while
Alcott was hesitant because she was not the largest fan of girls; she began the task. While this piece
was originally geared to satisfy younger girls, the piece goes far beyond the point of just being another
piece of chick lit. When Alcott wrote the first part of Little Women in 1868, it was seen as
groundbreaking work. It was groundbreaking not because she was a new author, (she was thirty five
years old and had been in the writing industry for over a decade and a half (MacDonald 12)) but
because she was able to incorporate the aspect of young women (appealing to the juvenile audience)
but also incorporate a different kind of heroine. When Jo was made the heroine and the center of the
story; it went against societies norms to cherish a young lady who was the furthest thing from being
ladylike. With Jo as the leading lady, Alcott was able to address the idea of a novel centered on girls
but also include the newer concept of a tomboy. Throughout the novel Jo, with the rest of her sisters,
transforms from a young adolescent to a more mature, selfless women; but that was not without
struggles. This novel was seen as chick lit for more than one reason, with the title being Little

The Inside Job ADMAP REVIEW OF THE MOVIE INSIDE JOB Rohan Rambhia | PGP 10 155 Inside Job is an exemplary recount of how administrator s role when exploited to form risky administrative strategies by means of faulty processes lead to a crisis of the stature of the recession of 2008. It is a comprehensive documentary which narrates the history of the collapse, not only going into great, informative depth about the risk based strategies that put the global economy on the line, but looks back to the rise of the financial industry. The biggest question which the documentary arouses is that knowing what happened, why are the miscreants not being punished? The high risks that began with subprime lending were transferred from investors to other investors who, due to questionable rating practices, falsely believed that the investments were safe. And these rating were done by Academicians Consultants who were given millions of dollars for these false ratings. On being questioned by the law about the validity and basis for those ratings, the only answer which was given was that at that time they believed (or were made to believe) that those investments were good. Due to these false ratings the lenders were pushed to sign up mortgages without regard to risk, or even favoring higher interest rate loans, since, once these mortgages were packaged together, the risk was disguised. According to the film, the resulting products would often have AAA ratings, equal to U.S. government bonds. The products could then be used even by investors such as retirement funds which ... • 3. Comparing John Wilmot s A Satire Against Reason And Mankind John Wilmot, a writer from the seventeenth century, uses several literary devices to drive his point home. One of his most famous poems, A Satire Against Reason and Mankind , is unique in many ways. It uses several literary devices that create a paradox between the author s words and the satirical nature of his razor sharp wit. During Wilmot s time, several authors such as John Locke and Thomas Hobbes use their own wit and intelligence to define, attack, and attempt to explain reason. Not only is reason a common theme among the writers of this century, each writer is tied to the church and religion. Wilmot s use of satire to destroy the purpose of reason creates an irony through metaphors and verse that needs wit and reasoning to understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Wilmot contradicts himself as he introduces two specific interlocutors into the framework of the narrative. These interlocutors, the clergy (band and beard) and the adversary, create chaos and simplicity irony in and of itself to reconstruct mankind s ability to reason. The clergy uses a simple and direct approach to explaining why mankind was given the ability to reason. God himself intended for mankind to rule over animals and beasts. Wilmot states, Whom his creator took such care to make, / that from himself he did the image take, / and this fair frame in shining reason dressed, / to dignify his nature above beasts (2304). This irony shows that man was given the very thing that Wilmot rails against reason. As for the adversary, his response to Wilmot s argument fabricates a narrative filled with chaos. Knight explores this issue further and he states, The adversary s remarks represent a break in both the content and structure of the poem. They give the speaker a specific position against which to argue and a specific audience against which to direct his arguments ( Knight 256). This implies that the interlocutor was created to help Wilmot expound on his argument through a continued ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Equal amounts of matter and antimatter particles began to collide and annihilate each other. Gravity, strong and weak nuclear forces, and electromagnetic forces soon came into play. As the universe started to cool, fundamental particles called quarks began to smash together forming protons and neutrons. They, in turn, merged to create the nuclei of simple elements, beginning with hydrogen, helium, and lithium. This primordial soup contained the building blocks for everything in the universe. Voilà, the universe was born. Matter and energy continued to expand. Static electricity and gravity brought the expanding matter together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Strings would also give rise to the forces of nature: gravity, strong and weak nuclear forces, and electromagnetism. Atoms contain protons that produce a positive charge, neutrons that produce a neutral charge, and electrons that produce a negative charge. According to the theory, electrons and quarks, which make up protons and neutrons, were produced by minuscule, one dimensional, randomly behaving, vibrating strings of energy. A property of matter or force of nature would be the result when the strings vibrate and interact with each other. Not so fast, physicists filled blackboard after blackboard with mathematical equations to prove that the theory was consistent with the force of gravity. Did not happen. A theory had to be established that was compatible with the gravitational forces in the enormous universe and the microscopic world. The modified theory had to include quantum gravity, a high frequency, string vibration that would produce a graviton. A graviton is responsible for curving surrounding space. The Super String Theory soon replaced the Not so super String Theory. Particle/wave duality of matter and energy on the quantum level joined the mix, boson/fermion partnerships known as supersymmetry brought the wine, quantum gravity served the hors d oeuvres, and the Mother of all parties got underway. Narcissistic Personality Disorder Paper Narcissism Narcissistic personality disorder is a mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance, a deep need for admiration and a lack of empathy for others. (Mayo Clinic, 2014) Like other personality disorders, narcissists have traits that cause them to feel and behave in socially distressing ways, limiting their ability to function in important areas of life, such as school, work, and relationships. What may not be apparent to the outside eye is that there is a very fragile and friable self esteem that is very thin skinned. Those with this disorder think very highly of themselves and have a hard time seeing anyone else s views, because they believe their way is the best way. They have self centered fantasies that are high and wide of actual reality. Receiving criticism for them, even in the slightest, can be so detrimental. You may never see the extreme sensitivity to the criticism because it is often kept so quiet and hidden from others. It can sometimes be difficult to distinguish a true narcissistic person apart from a person who is highly confident. They may look similar, although a narcissist is far more in true depth with themselves and sees others as inferior. • 6. A Brief Note On The 18th And 18th Centuries Matthew Cappock The 17th and 18th centuries were a period in Europe where the country was driven by agriculture. New ideas and technologies were invented which led to an increase in crops leading to The British Agricultural Revolution. As a direct result of the crop yields, small landowners weren t able to profit therefore leaving their farms and migrating to smaller cities where they mostly worked in factories. This led to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in Europe. Although there are many changes that took place during the 17th and 18th centuries, the increased crop yields came about in part because of new advances such as the Northfolk Crop Rotation, The Rotherham Plow, the seed drill, and enclosure which negatively affected small farmers by increasing production which meant less farmers were needed to supply the population. However, positive effects such as less competition and increased profits benefited large landowners and ultimately led to the industrial revolution. The Northfolk Crop Rotation dramatically affected crop production in Europe. This system allowed for farmers to make better profits. It replaced the older three course rotation with a four course rotation. In the first season, farmers would plant clover which the livestock would eat. The farmers would then sell the healthy animals on the market and begin growing wheat which would also be sold on the market during the second season. During the third season, the farmers plant turnips which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The goal behind this study is to better identify the presence of these structures which are known to produce chemical signals in conjunction with the release of their urine. In the lobster Homarus Americanus, urine signals are used as a form of chemical communication, males use urine in the determination of dominance over other males as well as to allow females choice of dominant males. Any figures beyond the set up of these dissections are just to help illustrate what the Rosette glands actually looked like, or a better understanding of the anatomy behind a cross sectioned nephropore (fig 2a b). The results from these cross section figures showed that rosette glands could be identified in the nephropre areas of every examined lobster. Subtle differences were found within these rosettes, one example being the cells within the rosettes either being rounded with many secretory granules, or thinner cells with smaller granules with spaces between the cells. Other rosettes were more organized into clusters of different sizes, and found within the connective tissue. These clusters were categorized into two separate gland complexes, on medial to the ureter and the other later (fig 3a b). Other experiments focused on within this article looked at the size and orientation of these gland complexes in an effort to better understand subtle differences from the normal nephropores, one example being some lobsters having anterior clusters which release the product a different way. Although this was far from the norm of the lobsters studied, they found that the glands appeared to be released through the exterior of the animal, not via the urinary bladder like every other nephropore complex. One other hypothesis tested was that nephropore rosette glands produce a bacteriostatic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A gas syringe is a special low friction syringe for measuring the volume of gas produced or to insert gas into a reaction. These could be down to variances in the control of controlled variables between groups or different methods or techniques used to control them. A clear and easily understandable variable that would affect this mean would be the rate of the swirl or vigour with which it was carried out, for example if a greater rate of swirling was employed by one group, this would produce a higher value and thus this value would affect the overall mean, as a swirl pattern with more vigour provides more kinetic energy to the enzyme and substrate, thus increasing the chance of successful collisions, which subsequently increases the rate of reaction, biasing the results. Another inconsistency would be the accuracy to which the minute time period was observed. Depending on the methods employed by each individual and thus their reaction time and dexterity (example of this would be the time taken to place the bung in the flask, which could vary from person to person), the results may vary as the gas volume may increase or decrease depending on the person or even the trial. On this basis, I do believe that a further trial for pH 7 would be required to ensure a more consistent result is achieved across the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Examples Of Escapism In The Glass Menagerie Neil Gaiman, a renowned English author, questioned the thought provoking line, If you were trapped in an impossible situation, in an unpleasant place, with people who meant you ill, and someone offered you a temporary escape, why wouldn t you take it? Gaiman advocates towards the idea of when life becomes stressful, people tend to find a temporary escape to alleviate anxiety and avoid the harsh realities of the world. In his play, The Glass Menagerie, placed in St.Louis during the Great Depression, Tennessee Williams creates a story that demonstrates this theme of escapism. Tom Wingfield, an aspiring poet who steals away from his mundane life with alcohol and going to the movies, narrates a memory illustrating the familial tensions between him, his mother Amanda, and his younger sister, Laura. Amanda is stuck in an imaginary time loop, constantly reminiscing about her golden days in Blue Mountain, where she attracted seventeen gentlemen callers. Her state of mind was caused by her marriage to a man who chose world travel over his family. Now, she takes comfort in governing her children s lives and reliving her youth. Tom s extremely reserved 23 year old sister, Laura, has lived a reclusive life due to insecurities about her limp. She seeks safety through tending to her treasured glass menagerie and listening to music from a Victrola. • 14. A Study On Coors Brewing Company Essay Executive Summary This case study is about Coors Brewing Company and their want to implement a balanced scorecard (BSC) approach to their processes. Ken Rider, the designer of the project, has been tasked with the job of exploring the BSC method and modifying an answer to their operations. The goal of the BSC is to not only strengthen the recent Computer Integrated logistics (CIL) project, but to guarantee compensation of staff is tied on to their contribution to the firm s strategic vision. This case study looks at the evidences at hand and delivers 3 primary alternatives: to do nothing which might probably widen the benchmarking gaps within the future, to implement the BSC immediately that risks duplicating some of the processes of the CIL project or to require a wait and see approach which might offer the firm 3 years to work out the success of the CIL project before implementing the BSC. In weighing every different, it is determined that the suitable course is to start implementation of the BSC immediately because the risks of waiting are too detrimental. The analysis recommends a structure around which the BSC could be constructed and goes on to answer some of the questions posed by workers about the logistics of applying BSC and how it may affect them individually. The recommendation contains the use of an EVA analysis to construct the financial perspective along with targeted yardsticks for the other measurements (wherever possible). Answer to Part 1 ... This is due to osmosis, water moves from a higher water concentration area to a lower water concentration area. From the results table, one can see that the mass of potato in the 0.1M sucrose solution increased by 13%, and the mass decreased by 28% in the 1.0M sucrose solution. Value can also be added to the product through outside or support (Porter, 1985) activities such as brand awareness, speed of delivery, after sales service. Resource Based View (RBV) theorists argue that information technology (IT) resources can be used today in an online environment to enable a firm to improve efficiency regardless of whether mimicked by competitors, or may yield performance impacts unique to a firm relative to its competitors. (Melville, Kraemer Gurbaxani 2004) A major factor in RBV and enhancing value creation better than a company s competitors is that of competitive heterogeneity. This refers to enduring and systematic performance differences among relatively close rivals. (Hoopes, Madsen Walker, 2003) Resources are the tangible and intangible assets of a firm that can be used in the value creation process and the RBV consists of six conditions necessary for a firm to confer a sustainable competitive advantage (Melville, Kraemer Gurbaxani 2004) and are as follows. • 21. The Bombing Of The Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building The event that I chose was the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City by an ex Army soldier and security guard named Timothy McVeigh. He parked a rented Ryder truck in front of the building loaded with a powerful bomb made out of a deadly cocktail of agricultural fertilizer, diesel fuel, and other chemicals. The bomb went off at 9:02 a.m. When the smoke cleared the area looked like a war zone. Half of the building had been reduced to rubble, surrounding cars were incinerated and nearby buildings were damaged or destroyed. The death toll was very devastating: 168 people, including 19 children were killed that day not to mention several hundred more injured in the blast. The bombing was considered the worst act of homegrown terrorism in the nation s history (fbi.gov). On April 20, axle of the Ryder truck was found, investigators were able to find the vehicle identification number that was traced to a body shop in Junction City, Kansas.Employees of the show were able to help investigators with a description of the man who rented the van. After agents showed the drawing around town, a local hotel employee supplied a name: Tim McVeigh. On April 21 it was discovered that McVeigh was already in jail. Picasso s Guernica is very representational but I can also see so abstract aspects in a weird way. Goya s Third of May is naturalistic and representational but unlike Guernica we can clearly see the people who are in charge causing the struggle. In both paintings the value of the light plays important role in the paintings. Picasso uses shades of black and white to show all the different aspects and the painting. Goya uses the value of the light to direct our attention to the main events in the painting. • 23. Character Analysis Of Bertha Mason In Jane Eyre Jane Erye Essay Brief Character in Novel Bertha Mason, although a minor character in Charlotte Bronte s Jane Eyre , played a crucial role in the love story between Jane and Rochester and gives a deeper understanding of how mentally impaired people were treated at the time. She is necessary to Jane and Rochester s imminent marriage and her actions lead the two to reconcile. Her motives and the causes for behavior are unclear, besides her obvious jealousy towards Jane and betrayal she felt from Rochester. Not only that, but Bertha also symbolizes everything Jane is not, mirroring her in a way as a polar opposite. At the start of the novel the reader knows nothing about Bertha mason. She does not make an appearance till Jane becomes aware of a strong smell of burning coming from Rochester s room. Although she suspects Grace to have caused it, we find that Bertha set fire to his room. Rochester simply tries to hide her existence because he wants nobody to know of her, but cannot get rid of her. But that appears at this time it seems because Jane is troubled, a sort of doubling image. Bertha is constantly seen as an obstacle standing in Jane and Rochester s way of happiness and marriage. Her instability is illustrated in an extremely animalistic manner. Bertha threatens to drain [Mason s] heart , similar to an evil being or vampire (ch.20). The lines of the responsibilities of a public relations professional are often blurred and confused. However, the Public Relations Society of America composed a specific definition to help with the confusion: public relations are a strategic communication process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics ( About Public Relations ). Breaking down the definition a bit shows exactly what public relations is about mutually beneficial relationships ( About Public Relations ). Professionals work to create and maintain various relationships, whether it be with journalists or clients, that will yield positive results for all parties involved. In an interview, Vallerie, who works in public relations, revealed she interacts with upwards of 20 different people daily (Mackillop). Publics are generally thought of as the general public population; this is true to an extent for public relations. A public is anyone who ever has or ever will form an opinion about the client (Roost). This means that it is possible to have more than one public that a professional is dealing with for their work. Public relations are unlike other means of publicity, such as advertising and marketing. However, companies tend to push public relations to the side to focus more on those methods. • 26. The Sign Of The Four, And The Red Badge Of Courage, By... Great Expectations , The Sign of the Four , and The Red Badge of Courage are books written with literary elements as building block for storytelling. Each first chapter uses character development, setting description, and many types of conflict to interest the reader. Even though all of the stories contain these elements, some are used more than others. Great Expectations and The Red Badge of Courage focus on the setting and character description more than The Sign of The Four where the element on conflict is heavily used. In the first chapter of Great Expectations the reader is introduced to Pip who is looking at the tombstones of his birth family that he never knew in the graveyard of a church on top of a hill. His mother, father, and five infant babies were all buried together as told in the story (Dickens,2016). Charles Dickens chose to implement the setting of the story while also introducing some of the characters. The story uses direct characterization when a man appears to threaten Pip. The man is described as beaten up with torn shoes and wet clothes and a knife that he uses to scare Pip which leads to conflict (Dickens,2016). The type of conflict that occurs is classified as man versus man. Dickens uses conflict to describe what Pip looks like when the man steals a piece of bread from Pip because he is hungry and then threatens to cut Pips cheek off and eat it. He then describes himself in first person that he does not have much fat on his body (Dickens,2016). Two more characters are introduced when the man asks Pip who he lives with since his parents are dead. Pip responds and says that he lives with his sister and the man she is married to who happens to be a blacksmith (Dickens,2016). When the man put the knife to Pips throat and told him to fetch him a file, it motivated Pip because his life depended on it (Dickens,2016). His behavior towards the conflict is that he obeys what the man has told him to do and agrees to his terms (Dickens,2016). Arthur Doyle s book The Sign of The Four it is shown that conflict and character development are heavily focused on when telling the story. Coming of age birthdays exist throughout many cultures and have evolved in different ways depending on the region or religion they came from. Besides the traditional American sweet 16 , there are other very popular traditions that are diversified by culture, religion, and by the day it takes place. Americans celebrate many of these different cultural birthdays because anyone who lives in the US has the right to practice any religion they see fit. Most birthdays have very similar features such as giving gifts to the man and, or woman of honor. There are also many differences in these traditions, some of which are considerably more family based than others, such as the Quinceanera . A Quinceanera is a Catholic, Hispanic, celebration for when a Hispanic girl turns 15. The 15 year old receives a special birthday that represents them transforming from a girl into a woman. This tradition was brought to Mexico by Spanish conquerors and has remained a tradition of South America and Mexico ever since. It is only practiced in Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central, South, and North American cultures. It is a very formal event; so formal in fact that most of the celebration is treated like a wedding. • 28. Bugs Bunny Commercial Analysis Imagine audiences sitting in the movie theater trying to escape from the looming hardships of World War II. They sit and watch as the commercials begin to play when one of the most familiar tunes in animation begins. The commercial presents itself deceptively using the classic Looney Tunes curtain opening and theme music with the simple title of Bugs Bunny. The only hint at the true purpose of advertising at this point is the producer listing of the U.S. Treasury Dept. Defense Savings Staff. The curtains quickly open with an approaching Bugs Bunny miming the fife with his carrot as The Girl I Left Behind plays in the background. This is all set against a redrawing of the classic American painting The Spirit of 76. Bugs Bunny then begins to eat the carrot he s been holding, when he suddenly begins the song Any Bonds Today? . Suddenly, the purpose of the commercial is finally revealed to the audience, with Bugs song telling people to buy war bonds. All throughout this he gestures, points and moves with an animated flair for the audience. He even exits and reenters frame with an Uncle Sam costume, eventually beginning to act like he s passing out bonds to the audience. Until, with an animated twirl Bugs Bunny appears with blackface and a different singing voice, a parody of the blackface performance Al Jolson did in the movie The Jazz Singer. Finally, the picture pulls in close on Bugs face as he wipes away the paint and once the picture pulls back out the backdrop has changed. It shows a combat scene full of planes and ships as Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig appear to help close the advertisement with singing and dancing. As the song ends a simple war bonds ad pulls into frame. It now presents a Minuteman on the left and texts that reads For Defense Buy United States Savings Bonds and Stamps. The commercial relies heavily on its ethos and pathos to convince the audience into buying war bonds, using very little logos. Furthermore, ethos is used by the commercial with the use of Bugs Bunny as the appeal for the audience. At this time in American history Bugs Bunny was one the most famous animated characters often considered fun for the whole family. Also with most fathers gone off to fight in the war the ... Carr makes a distinction between proprietary technologies and infrastructural technologies. He argues that proprietary technologies are those that can be actually or effectively owned by a single company (Carr, 2013, p. 42). Proprietary technologies can create strategic advantage as long as they remain protected, and can provide companies with a lot of profit. Meanwhile, Infrastructural technologies provide greater value when shared. Technologies move from proprietary to infrastructure as they mature. Moreover, Carr asserts that IT has lost its strategic value. He argues that IT is no longer strategic because it has stopped to be scarce goods. In addition, he mentions that profit margins on IT related innovations will disappear. This argument is based on capital intensive goods such as railroads and steam engines. I disagree with this statement. IT should not be compared to such goods. The marginal cost of IT products does not increase with greater scale. Thus, any business that can decrease marginal cost by installing IT can make IT investments profits large and gain improved strategic value. Furthermore, Carr argues that IT is primarily transport technology, and because everyone got access to IT, it s no longer offers an advantage. I disagree with Carr. However, a combination of a mild economic depression and Henry Ford s Model T began eating away at Harley Davidson s profits, and the motorcycle company even had to reject a potential business partnership with Ford Motor Company to protect themselves ( William S. Harley, Arthur ). The partnership involved manufacturing Harley Davidson bikes with a sidecar to be used to deliver mail, albeit under the Ford name. Harley Davidson rejected this deal, but later used the idea to sell their own bikes to the Postal Service (Harley and the Davidsons). In 1914, the U.S Postal Service was using 4,800 Harley Davidson motorcycles to deliver mail. To save their company, Harley designed motorcycles to be used by law enforcement across the United States. By the mid 1920s, roughly 3,000 law enforcement personnel would be riding a Harley Davidson, a testament to William Harley s engineering genius. In addition, Harley would design bikes with larger engines and brakes which helped boost sales for a short while before the Great Depression came. Hayward et al. also used the Myanmar timber camp Elephas maximus to perform the research, looking at the records of 416 reproductive captive born mothers and their offspring. The elephants used were from 8 regions of the Myanmar timber camps with the youngest breeding being 5 years of age and the oldest being 53. The mean age at the first birth of offspring was 19.48 years with the maximum number of lifetime calves being 10 calves. Hayward et al. discovered that individuals who didn t produce calves before the age of 19 had lower calf survival than those who produced one or more calves before the age of 19. Although beginning reproduction earlier in life is correlated with a shorter lifespan, the cost is outweighed with higher annual breeding success as well as increased calf survival (Hayward et al). The investment of energy and resources into breeding at an early age increases the chance of calf survival but also results in shorter lifespans compared to those who begin reproduction later in life (Hayward et al.). Based on the findings, the costs of early life reproduction are offset by higher lifetime breeding success in younger elephants. The breeding success of younger elephants can be attributed not only to early reproduction, but also to older females in a herd. While Hayward et al. observes the effects of young ... • 43. Descriptive Essay About Corn Maze In the Declaration of Independence it states, mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable,... and on October 8th, 2016 this became true. This day was not only the start of my suffering, but tons of other people s too. It was around 7 o clock p.m. when a group of my friends and I decided that we needed to come together and go out, and what better is there to do in early October than visit a corn maze. After nearly an hour of planning around all ten people s schedules, we decided we would leave around nine to arrive there during the scariest hours of night. We all met in Eaton which is where we always met when we were going to carpool. Everyone arrived on time, smelling strongly of bug spray which we would later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was a brilliant idea not to put me in front because my sense of direction is about as clear as a blind bats. I m also not the type of person to bring to a corn maze, I was scared each time a person jumped out or I heard a rustling in the distance. The air surrounding me was musty and smoky. There was a strange, eerie feeling as we made our way out of the maze. In the distance we could see a large trampoline and no one wanted to pass up that opportunity. We raced all the way to the large bouncy giant just to find out they were closed. Confused, we looked at our phones to check the time and then it all made sense, it was 11:30. Now, we started the mile hike back to the car. My feet were aching from walking through the maze so I asked if we could take a small break. Right as we stopped walking my phone started ringing. Confusion fell over me as I looked down to see my friend Lauren s name pop up on the screen. I answered with a perplexed, Hello? . On the other end of the phone there were muffled sobs she tried talking, but all I could hear was gibberish. I tried to comfort her so she could calm down so she could tell me what was going on. Seconds later she murmured, He s dead, Derek is dead. At this point I was so lost, in my state of panic, I couldn t figure out who Derek was and what could have possibly happened to him. ... • 45. Little Women Or Meg By Louisa May Alcott Little Women or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy by Louisa May Alcott is a coming of age story about four girls with all different personalities and different ways of going through the world. Alcott was persuaded by a talented editor from the Roberts Brothers firm to write a story for girls, and while Alcott was hesitant because she was not the largest fan of girls; she began the task. While this piece was originally geared to satisfy younger girls, the piece goes far beyond the point of just being another piece of chick lit. When Alcott wrote the first part of Little Women in 1868, it was seen as groundbreaking work. It was groundbreaking not because she was a new author, (she was thirty five years old and had been in the writing industry for over a decade and a half (MacDonald 12)) but because she was able to incorporate the aspect of young women (appealing to the juvenile audience) but also incorporate a different kind of heroine. When Jo was made the heroine and the center of the story; it went against societies norms to cherish a young lady who was the furthest thing from being ladylike. With Jo as the leading lady, Alcott was able to address the idea of a novel centered on girls but also include the newer concept of a tomboy. Throughout the novel Jo, with the rest of her sisters, transforms from a young adolescent to a more mature, selfless women; but that was not without struggles. This novel was seen as chick lit for more than one reason, with the title being Little ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
