We need food to live and get energy. Food comes from plants like fruits and grains or animals like meat and milk. Our bodies break food down through digestion. Food passes through the mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines where nutrients are absorbed and waste is eliminated. A balanced diet with foods from all groups provides vitamins, minerals, protein and energy to support growth, activity and health.
