WE NEED FOOD • 
The nutrition function consists of four processes: 
1- Obtaining nutrients by eating or drinking. 
2- Respiration 
3- Carrying substances. 
4- Eliminating waste. 
FOODS AND THE NUTRIENTS: three groups: 
1- Energy – producing are mainly carbohydrates and fats. We obtain 
energy. 
E.g. nuts, butter. 
2- Body-building: proteins. Our body grows and repairs itself. 
E.g. legumes and cheese. 
3- Body-regulating: vitamins, minerals and fibre. It prevents illnesses and 
keep you healthy. E. g. : calcium, tomatoes..

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM 
is the part of the body that: 
- TAKES IN FOOD and 
- TRANSFORMS IT INTO NUTRIENTS. 
TWO PARTS: 
1) THE TRACT: is a long tube which food PASSES THROUGH. 
Parts: MOUTH, PHARYNX, OESOPHAGUS, STOMACH, SMALL and LARGE INTESTINES 
and ANUS. 
2) THE GLANDS: organs that produces substances to BREAK DOWN foods to 
extract nutrients. 
Glands: SALIVARY GLANDS, LIVER and PANCREAS.

HOW THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM WORK 
• Three processes: 
1- TRANSFORMING FOOD: 
– Food is GROUND UP by the teeth. 
– Food is MIXED UP with substances. 
2-ABSORBING NUTRIENTS: 
- Nutrients are absorbed through the walls of the intestine. 
- They pass into the bloodstream and are distributed. 
3-ELIMINATING WASTE: 
- The food that the body doesn´t need PASSES INTO the 
large intestine. 
- FAECES are formed. 
- They are eliminated through the ANUS.
DIET 
It´s the food and water that a person eats in a day. 
WHAT IS A HEALTHY DIET LIKE? It´S a diet that contains the nutrients and 
water that the body needs. 
5 TIPS FOR A HEALTHY DIET 
- Have 5 meals a day but eat the right amount. 
- Eat an energy-producing breakfast. 
- Do not eat sugary or fatty foods. 
- Eat legumes once or twice a week. 
- Eat fruit and vegetables every day.
STAYING HEALTHY 
Three things you can do to stay healthy: 
1- Food safety: to avoid dangerous substances. 
- wash your hands before you eat. 
- use clean cutlery, plates and cups. 
- wash fruit and vegetables. 
- eat fresh food. 
2- Physical exercise: 
- to help us build strong bones and muscles. 
- to make us more flexible. 
- to use the energy that our body doesn´t need. 
3- Sleep and rest: children need to sleep 8 or 9 hours. 
- to relax your muscles, breathing and heartbeat. 
-to grow. 
- to let the brain organises the information.
