The document provides an overview of an expert webinar on following up after a job interview. The webinar covered:
1) Thank you notes are an important middle step in the follow up process, not the first or last step, and should be sent within 24 hours of the interview.
2) Candidates should call the hiring manager 2-3 days after sending the thank you note if they haven't heard back to check on the status and next steps.
3) Candidates should contact the hiring manager every 3-5 days until receiving an offer or rejection to stay top of mind and demonstrate strong communication skills.
These slides will help you preparing for an interview.
Following up after a job interview is an important, yet often overlooked, part of the job search process. It allows you to thank the interviewer for his or her time while also reiterating your interest in the job and your potential to positively contribute to the company. However, following-up can be a delicate process and going about it the wrong way can actually hurt your chances. This article will address the most appropriate way to follow-up after a job interview to help you stand out from the other job applicants.
If the interviewer does not offer a timeline for their decision-making process, you are perfectly entitled to ask for one. Find out when they expect to let candidates know their decision, who in the company will be contacting the candidates (interviewer, HR manager), and through what means - email, phone call or letter.
This will give you the person’s correct contact information, including name, title, mailing address and email address, which will save you time when you are sending your thank you note and letter. You should do this as soon after the interview as possible, from your smartphone on the way out of the building, as soon as you get home, or at least the same evening as the interview. This shows the interviewer that you are both enthusiastic and organized and ensures that they will not forget you as a candidate.
After you managed to get through your resume check, you successfully passed all of the aptitude tests (if any), you got an invitation for an interview. Congrats!
If you managed to get that far, you are halfway there. Now, it is important to make sure you are making the right first impression.
How to do this? Here's how.
This video contains information about top 10 interview questions and answers with examples and important points to remember. Hope this will help you in your interviews.

Interview: Beyond “Thank You”

3. When you think about job interview
follow up…
• What do you think of?
• Thank you notes.
• Most people think thank you
notes are either the first step or
the last step.
• They’re neither.
They’re a middle step.
4. Your job interview follow up…
• Needs to start in the interview itself.
• It continues when you send your
thank you note.
• And in your contacts after your
thank you note.
Today we’re going to talk about
how that all works together.
5. You need to find out…
• If you answered all their
questions.
• When they’re making a decision.
• If they agree that you’re a great
fit for the job.
• What the next steps are.
What you find out will be your
guideline for action.
6. The thank you note serves many
purposes…
• Highlights good communication
skills and social skills
• Damage control
• Address issues you forgot
• Expand on things you talked
about in the interview
Biggest goal: get to the
next step.
7. It’s very important…
• Get that thank you note in front of
them within 24 hours, by email.
• Business is done at a faster speed
than ever these days, and they
could easily make a decision on
who to hire…
While your note is stuck
at the post office.
8. What to do next.
• They say they’ll call you but they
don’t.
• Wait a day or two at the most
and then call them:
– What’s going on?
– Are we still making progress with
this?
– When can I meet with you again to
discuss this position?
This is a sign of good
communication.
9. A lot of candidates…
• Make the assumption that if they
don’t call, you aren’t getting the job.
• That’s just not true.
• They’re busy.
• It’s OK for you to call and cut
through that noise…
To find out what’s going
on with the process.
10. Talk to someone in person.
• The usual procedure is to have these
discussions with someone in HR.
• If HR isn’t calling you back, then call
the hiring manager.
• Say something simple like:
– “I want to let you know that I am still very
interested in this position… hear
something yesterday, and I didn’t… any
other questions I could answer… where
you are with this?”
That’s the kind of phone call
that can get you the job.
11. You might be thinking…
• Can’t I just send another email to
follow up?
• No, you can’t.
• It’s too easy for them to brush you
off:
– “We haven’t made a decision yet, sorry.
We’ll call you.”
If you get a message like that,
you’re shut down.
12. Make your first move a phone call…
• Probe for additional information.
• Ask questions to get more
information.
• Always know when the next step
is supposed to be.
• If they are interviewing for a
position, they have a problem that
needs solving.
Stay on top of the situation.
13. Make some kind of
contact every 3-5 days
until you have an offer
or a rejection.
14. What if they don’t pick up?
• If you leave a voicemail, say that you’ll
also send an email:
– “I was checking in to see how the process is
going. I want to see if I can answer any more
questions you might have and set up a time to
talk again. I’ll also send you an email…”
• If you don’t get a response from an
email, your next move needs to be a
phone call.
Your goal is to talk with
them face-to-face again.
15. What if they say…
• “We haven’t made a decision yet?”
• Are you shut down?
• No.
• Follow up with a question:
– Is there any additional information I can
give you?
– Is there anything else they need to know?
– When can you come back in?
You’re always making that move
toward another conversation.
16. What if they say…
• “We’re sorry, but we’re moving
forward with another
candidate.”
• You can set yourself up for one
more conversation.
• You say:
– “Is that a done deal?”
– “Have the papers been signed, or
are you still in the process?”
17. If it’s not official yet…
• You can say:
– “If anything should go awry somewhere, I’m still very interested in this
job… would it be alright if I checked back in? When do you think you’ll
have everything squared away with that candidate?”
• If they say Friday, then you say:
– “Will it be all right if I call you back on Monday just to talk with you, just
to see if it did all go through, and to get some feedback?”
You’ve just put yourself right there
next in line for the offer.
18. Remember…
Just like your interview, your
follow up is a conversation.
You can and should be assertive
and ask questions rather than
wait passively for them to call
you.
You’ll give yourself a much better
chance at getting it.
