This document discusses folded plate structures. Folded plates are flat plates connected along edges that can carry loads without beams. They are inspired by structures in nature. Folded plates can be divided based on their geometric shape into folded plate surfaces, frames, and spatial structures. Loads are distributed along the folded surface and seams. The document also describes the Stadshuis town hall in Nieuwegein, Netherlands, which uses a folded plate structure design with a central atrium and floors that open like a fan around it.

2. FOLDED PLATES STRUCTURE
➤ Folded plates are assemblies of flat plates rigidly connected together along their edges in such a way that the
structural system capable of carrying loads without the need for additional supporting beams along mutual
edges
➤ The principle of folding as a tool to develop a general structural shape has been known for a long time. Folded
structure systems which are analogous to several biological systems such as found at broadleaf-tree leaves,
petals and foldable insect wings, are adopted to be employed in a new, technical way.
➤ Based on geometric shape folded structures can be divided into :
1. folded plate surfaces,
2. folded plate frames,
3. spatial folded plate structures.
➤ The shape of folded structures affects the transmission of load and direction of relying of folded structures.
Based on these parameters we can do the division in :
A. linear folded plate structure,
B. radial folded plate structure,
C. spatial folded plate structure.
➤ Combined folded constructions are carried out over the complex geometric basis, formed by the combination of
simple geometric figures, rectangles and semicircles on one side or both sides. This type of folded structure can
be derived in the plane or as a frame (cylindrical) structure, and represents a combination of folded structure
above the rectangular base and 1⁄2 of the radial construction.

4. FOLDED PLATE STRUCTURE -COMBINATION OF ADDITIONS
➤ Frame folded structures represent constructional set in which the elements of each
segment of the folds mutually occupy a frame spatial form. This type of folded
structure is spatial organisation of two or more folds in the plane.
➤ Spatial folded structures are the type of a structure in which a spatial constructive set
is formed by combining mutually the elements of a folded structure.
LOAD DISTRIBUTED AND BEHAVIOUR
TRANSLATIONAL SYMMETRY
➤ This component folds into three valley and four mountain folds.
➤ This component is a square skewed of opposite sides of equal length.
➤ The folded plate which when tested as a structural arrangement tessellates horizontally
to produce a horizontal form.
➤ Loads are distributed along the surface of the plate and also along the seams between
the folds.
➤ This surface folds along two loading bearing walls.
➤ The structural capacity of this component is strong because it folds in two direction
and as a result produce an affect of axiality.
➤ It is rigid and has a high load carrying capacity that spans two load bearing walls.

5. ➤ In terms of acoustics, this folded
structure diffuse sounds.
➤ The mountain fold will
experience shear force and
bending which will result to the
support under going stress.
➤ The valley folds of this
component allows harvesting of
rainwater if fold is used as a
ceiling surface. The openings at
both sides allows light into the
space.
➤ The Geometry created is a
translational symmetry fold
which can be designed using any
type of material such as paper,
cardboard, timber, aluminium
sheet

➤ Location: Nieuwegein, The Netherlands
➤ The new City Hall and cultural center in the
Dutch city of Nieuwegein, is designed to create
cohesion and the foundation for a stronger local
community.
➤ Architecturally the building takes its point of
departure from a central and bright atrium from
where a sculptural staircase soars up through the
building and connects the many diverse facilities
– indeed facilities not normally found in a City
Hall.

7. ➤ The five floors spread out like a fan
and open up towards the atrium,
allowing the building's visitors and
employees to visually connect with
what is happening on the other floors.
➤ The building has two facades.
➤ The inner is a traditional facade of
concrete and glass, while the exterior
facade of glass patterned silkscreen
almost folds around the building, but
without covering it completely.
➤ This avoids direct sunlight in work
station areas, while spaces like the
lobby and restaurant receive maximum
natural daylight and unobstructed
views over the city.
➤ The glass’ geometric patterns in blue
and grey give the facade a three-
dimensional expression and reflect the
diversity of both the building and
Nieuwegein.
