The Practice of Focusing
Focusing offers us the steps of the inner process that leads
to change and growth.
It’s a rich inner sensing practice, that connects us with
fresh and intuitive insights, reveals new life steps, and
sometimes also shifts issues that have long seemed stuck
and impenetrable. It is an experiential workshop and is
recommended for people who want to enrich their relating
with self and others.
Focusing can be learned and used as a personal practice
for more satisfying and empathic relating, and it is also an
orientation for psychotherapy and counselling.
“Surprising and
empowering”
“Expanding”
“Gentle and
nurturing, deeply
nourishing”
“Very enriching,
validating,
connecting to self”
The practice of Focusing was developed by esteemed psychologist and
philosopher Eugene Gendlin out of research with Carl Rogers about what makes
psychotherapy work well for just some people. He discovered that certain of the
‘ingredients’ crucial to improvement and success have to do with clients’ capacity
to inwardly sense and track freshly forming experience via its ‘feel’ in the body.
Our workshop teaches the basics of this very helpful form of self-sensing, along
with skills for deepening self-empathy and skills for attuned listening.

Since I qualified as a
Focusing-Oriented
Therapist in 2008,
Focusing practice has
become deeply
integrated into my life,
personally and
professionally. And, as
an Alexander Technique
teacher – using body
awareness to facilitate
personal growth – and
an amateur creative
dancer, I also have a
special interest in the
concept of Wholebody
Focusing. In general,
personal change and
growth inspire me.

My journey with
Focusing has had rich
and surprising yields,
both at the level of a
personal practice and in
my work - as a
Focusing-Oriented
Counsellor, and teaching
Focusing to groups and
individuals.
I continually draw on
Focusing’s potential for
self-resourcing,
alongside the practice of
mindfulness.
I am accredited as a

with the Focusing

After the workshop ... participants who have the Focusing basics are cordially
invited to attend our monthly Focusing Drop-In Groups if they so wish, free of charge, to
practise the skills of Focusing, and to meet other Focusers in Cape Town. Each of these
meetings includes a brief input on a particular aspect of Focusing, followed by a
Focusing session.
