New adverse reactions have been reported by the FDA and EMA regarding fluoroquinolone antibiotics. These include potential risk of hypoglycemic coma from blood sugar disturbances and mental health issues like attention disturbances. There is also an increased risk of heart valve problems, aortic aneurysms, and cervical artery dissections. This risk is higher in those with pre-existing heart conditions, connective tissue disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, or who are elderly or have renal failure. Patients should report any shortness of breath, palpitations, or edema to their provider and stop using fluoroquinolones.
