Fineness Test of Cement

WHAT IS FINENESS OF CEMENT?
Fineness of cement is property of cement that indicates particle size
of cement and specific surface area. And indirectly effect heat of
hydration.
 IMPORTANCE OF FINENESS OF CEMENT
1) Fineness of cement affects hydration rate hence the rate of
strength gain.
2) The smaller the particle size, the greater the surface area-to-
volume ratio, and thus, the more area available for water-cement
interaction per unit volume.
3) Therefore finer cement reacts faster with water and the rate of
development of strength and corresponding heat of hydration is
high.

4) Fineness is a measure of how even each granules are, leading
to a greater surface area & greater the surface area more the
adhesion.
5) Bleeding can be reduced by increasing fineness. However,
Increased fineness can also lead to the requirement of more
water for workability, resulting in a higher possibility of dry
shrinkage.
6) Fineness test is used to check the proper grinding of cement
and measures the surface area of the cement particles per
unit mass.

Apparatus:
 Purpose:
The purpose of this test is to find out the quality of
coarse material present in cement .It is an indirect test of
fineness of cement.
Procedure for finding Fineness test of cement:
1) Take a sample of cement and rub the cement with your
hands. The test sample should be free of lumps.
2) NowTake 100g of cement and note it as W1.
3) Pour 100g of cement in 90 µm sieve and close it with the lid.
4) Now place the sieve in Sieve shaking machine. You can also
shake the sieve with your hands by Agitating the sieve in
planetary and linear movements for 15 minutes.
5) Next, weight the residue retained on the 90 µm sieve asW2.
Then calculate the percentage ofWeight of cement-retained on
Sieve.
6) Repeat the above experiment with three different samples of
cement and average the values for accurate results.
The fineness of Cement Formula:

03 90 7 92.22
Observation’s and Calculation’s:
Result:
Average fineness of cement is 94.07%. It’s means
cement have good fineness.

 Precaution’s:
1) Sample should be taken dried.
2) Sieving to be done with wrist action to prevent
losses.
3) Weighing to done very accurately.
4) Use fresh cement.
5) Sieves which are used in practical must be clean.
6) Use plastic gloves because cement is not good for
human skin.
