INTRODUCTION
Community service is a work done by a person or a group of people that intended to
bring benefit to people in need without paid. The objective of this module is to enable the
privilege student like us to create a culture of respect and care to the community. It helps us
to become a more responsible and knowledgeable person whilst develop our sensitivity to the
community and people which need our help.
For this module, we had given the option of either to perform our community service
at orphanage home or dialogue in the dark and dining in the dark. We required to separate
ourselves into several group among the class. For my group, we had total 28 person and we
had decided to perform our community service at orphanage home after discussion. We hope
that with our capabilities can help the children in the orphanage to learn and create their
interest in the construction industry as well as let them feel the love and care from us to
remain the heart of hopefulness to the community and the world at large.
In this report, I will explain the progression of how we perform our community
service successfully in the orphanage home from the planning stage until the actual event
day.

PRE-EVENT STAGE
Project Brief
First and foremost, we had a project brief by our lecturer, Ms Tay Shir Men. Ms Tay
had explained the aim and objective of community service and hope that everyone of us able
to become a more responsible person and more sensitive to the community throughout this
module. Ms Tay had shown the work done by our senior to us and it gave a rough idea on
what we should do.
After the project brief, we had divided into several group. After the group discussion,
we had decided to conduct our community service at orphanage home instead of dinning in
the dark and dialogue in the dark. Besides, we also chosen Pang Kai Yun and Yeo Kai Wen
as our commander and deputy commander respectively to lead our group throughout the
event.
1st Meeting
For the first meeting, we had chosen and finalized the position that listed out by the
commander. We had divided into seven team which consisting financial team, game team,
sponsorship team, food and beverage team, gift and souvenir team, media team and location
team. After the team distribution, we had briefed the overall project planning by the
commander and the scope of work for every team.
I was decided to choose gift and souvenir team with my friend, Lee Kailyn. Basically,
our team needed to decide and prepare the gift, souvenir and prizes for game session which is
suitable for the children within the budget given as well as the appreciation gift for caretaker.
Our team had given the budget of RM800 (RM400 for souvenir and gift, RM150 for
caretaker and RM250 for prizes). Our team had done a survey through online and asked for
opinion from others for the gift that children would like to receive.

every team.

Pre-visit to Good Samaritan Home
Our group planned to have a pre-visit
before the actual event day. The main purpose
of the pre-visit is to get more information about
the orphanage home, so we can understand
more about the children and know what they
need. It helps us to plan our activities and give
us a direction on how to help the orphanage
home according to their needs.

2nd Meeting
For the second meeting, our team had proposed a list of gift and souvenir and
discussed with others in the group. We had proposed different type of stationary under the
gift category, several snacks under the souvenir category and food basket for caretaker. While
for the prizes, we had discussed our proposed items with our group and we had decided to
give out pendrive, water bottle and notebook for first, second and third group winner
respectively on the event day.
After all the proposed items had been agreed and approved by the commander, the
next task for our team is to prepare a budget list for those items. Financial team had increase
our budget from RM800 to RM900 and our team needed to survey all the prices of proposed
items to ensure it is within our budget.
Group discussion and update the progress of each team.
3rd Meeting
As our group needed to prepare a budget list for the 3rd
meeting, our team required to
survey several shops to get the cheapest price for the proposed items. We had went to
Econsave at Cheras and NSK at Kuchai Lama to survey the prices for the snacks we proposed
under the souvenir category. When we compare the prices, we realized that the snacks sell at
NSK is much more cheaper and we decided to purchase all the snacks at there.

EVENT DAY
On the event day, my job was to help
the media team to take photo and record video
throughout the event. The challenges for me is
to capture the moment the children enjoying the
activities clearly as there was large number of
children and our group member there. Besides,
I also enjoyed interacting with the children
while helping them to build their idea house
during the game session.
The photos below illustrate the itinerary of the event. I believe it is a memorable
experience for everyone of us.

REFLECTION
The photo shown the group picture taken with all the children.
First and foremost, I feel appreciate to have the opportunity to work with my
groupmates as everyone in the group were putting their efforts and time in organizing this
event without any return.
It is a meaningful and memorable experience for me. I had learnt a lot throughout the
event especially when we required to interact with the children. We always need to be
patience and be caring for the children because some of them are still small and they may not
understand what they should do when the group are planning to build their own designed
building. It always need to be patience while dealing with the kids to teach and guide them
step by step in helping to build up their designed building.
Besides, I also had improved my personal growth in becoming a more responsible
person to the community. From this event, I understand that with our little act of kindness can
means a lot to people in needs. We had an opportunity to contribute to the orphanage by
22. TAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY | SABD | BQS | COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE

teaching them about our profession. For example, we had conducted a workshop and game
session which can help the children to gain more construction industry knowledge and
understand more about the role and responsibility of construction profession such as
Architect, Engineer and Quantity Surveyor. From the activities, I was impressed by their
creativity in design the building they want to build. I hope that through this event, they can
have learnt and found their interest.
Moreover, I had enhanced my cost controlling skills while managing the budget in
preparing the gift & souvenir to the children. Our team had surveyed several shops to get the
items with cheapest price and good quality. With the good cost controlling skills, our team
able to allocate our expenses within the budget and have extra budget to buy groceries they
need to the orphanage home.
Furthermore, I also understand more about orphanage home. Many people may
misunderstand that all the children from orphanage home lose their parents in a very small
age. However according to Mr. Robert, there are very less orphanage in Malaysia and most of
the children from orphanage home are abandon by their parents because of economic factor
and violation. Some of the children may send to orphanage home due to their parent dead in
accident or sick and when there are no siblings, or the siblings are not capable to take care of
the children.

Lastly, I had learnt to appreciate what we have now. We are very fortunate, and we
should always help those who under privilege even we do not have a high-income level. We
can lead our helping hand to those who need by participate in charity activities or join the
international charitable organization such as World Vision.
