in the Spearfish canyon was going to be extremely treacherous, and yet

Spearfish canyon can be a rude awakening to some beginners. It may also be very

For this lesson I started with having the students gather in the library in order to read
the story to them. The students have a word watcher that they use when they are
reading their books. The word watcher is a plastic candy cane and I used that for this
lesson to activate prior knowledge. I held up the candy cane and asked the students
what they see. I had some students comment that there is a red strip on the candy
cane. The students also noticed a white strip, and then they noticed that the red and
white create a pattern. I asked where is the pattern on the candy cane, and they

clearly see who was ready. I had created a candy cane so that I could do the activity

this. Some would cut straight across, and some students would have cuts that were

African American writers represented. This isn t because they don t exist, but

they are good writers but there are also good African Americanwriters that deserve
just as much representation when teaching college courses. There s a greater choice

Karl Marx, also a philosopher was popularly known for his theories that best
explained society, its social structure, as well as the social relationships. Karl Marx
placed so much emphasis on the economic structure and how it influenced the rest of
the social structure from a materialistic point of view. Human societies progress
through a dialectic of class struggle, this means that the three aspects that make up
the dialectic come into play, which are the thesis, antithesis and the synthesis

During the industrialisation era, the factories were now in desperate need of a
minimally educated workforce as a result, mandatory and free educational systems
were put into place. This is clear example that shows that the economy was indeed the
base for all other structures in the society. The relations of production shapes the

the superstructure shapes the superstructure (education, family, religion, mass media,

As Pi falls asleep, he is disturbed once again by the surfacing of dead fish, and even
sharks, saying he [finds] the sight sinister , similar to the way a user may see the
dramatic changes in his face and body after extended drug use (277). Through this,

Over time, the actions of mankind have been the victim of two vague labels, right
and wrong. The criteria for these labels are not clearly defined, but they still seem
to be the standard by which the actions of man are judged. There are some people

The interest of the community is said to be a sum of the total interests of its several
members. It is never specified what how exactly this total is acquired or even if the
members of the community would agree on whatever is considered the community s
interest. If the members would agree then that means that everyone in the community
had the same interest to begin with. If the members would not agree, then how can
you go about adding up their conflicting interests? These interests, when attempting
to get a total seem like they would cancel each other out which wouldn t make for
much of sum total. Things of this nature (individual interests) are so relative that it
would be impossible as well as pointless to even try to place any kind of concrete
value, which brings up another point. What kind of value are these individual and
community interests supposed to have? In order to add things up they must have
