Baker studied architecture in Birmingham and graduated in 1937, aged 20, in a period of political unrest for Europe.During the Second World War, he served in the Friends Ambulance Unit in China and Burma. He worked as an architect for an international and interdenominational Mission dedicated to the care of those suffering from leprosy. He focused on converting or replacing asylums once used to house the ostracized sufferers of the disease - "lepers".He Used indigenous architecture and methods of these places as means to deal with his once daunting problems.

Many building materials are used for construction and different methods are followed. Each of these building materials has a unique embodied energy. Out of these materials, Roofing material constitute one of the major energy consuming components of the building. Effective utilization of available energy and its conservation is global challenge. For a developing country like India, the increasing demand of energy has created a scope for the study embodied energy of alternative roofing technique and their advantages for the sustainable building construction. The total embodied energy of a building can be reduced significantly by using alternate roofing technique such as RCC Filler slab which has lower embodied energy value.
Filler slab technology is a simple and a very innovative technology for a slab construction. The filler slab is based on the principle that for roofs which are simply supported, the upper part of the slab is subjected to compressive forces and the lower part of the slab experience tensile forces. Concrete is very good in withstanding compressive forces and steel bears the load due to tensile forces. Thus the lower tensile region of the slab does not need any concrete except for holding the steel reinforcements together. Hence concrete in the bottom region of solid RCC slab is replaced by an energy efficient and cost effective material. With reduced consumption of building material for roofing, the cost of the building can be reduced predominantly.

Flexural behaviour of fibre reinforced ferrocement concreteSanthosh Jayaraman
Ferro cement
The term Ferro cement is most commonly applied to a mixture of Portland cement and sand applied over layers of woven or expanded steel mesh and closely spaced small-diameter steel rods. It can be used to form relatively thin, compound curved sheets to make hulls for boats, shell roofs, water tanks, etc. It has been used in a wide range of other applications including sculpture and prefabricated building components. The term has been applied by extension to other composite materials including some containing no cement and no ferrous material. These are better referred to by terms describing their actual contents.
ABSTRACT
Ferrocement addition in cement mortar or concrete increases the performance of material. The present paper describes the results of testing flat ferrocement panels reinforced with different number of wire mesh layers. The main objective of these experimental tests is to study the effect of using different numbers of wire mesh layers on the flexural strength of flat ferrocement panels and to compare the effect of varying the number of wire mesh layers on the ductility and the ultimate strength of these types of ferrocement structures.
The used number of wire mesh layers is one, two, three and four layers.
The experimental results show that flexural strength of the folded panels increased by 37% and 90% for panels having 2 and 3 wire mesh layers respectively, copared with that having single layer, while for flat panel the increase in flexural strength compared with panel of plan mortar is 4.5%, 65% and 68% for panels having 1, 2 and 3 wire mesh layers respectively. The strength capacity of the folded panels, having the particular geometry used in the present study, is in the order of 3.5 to 5 times that of the corresponding flat panels having the same number of wire mesh layers. Both types are also analyzed using finite element method to check the flexural stresses in these panels under self weight and cracking load.

Shear and flexural behavior of ferro cement deep beamseSAT Journals
Abstract
The recent application of Ferro cement includes prefabricated roofs elements, load bearing panels, bridge decks and others. However
there have been many structural applications in different parts of the world especially in eastern hemisphere considerable efforts have
been made by many individuals and research organization around the world to study the engineering of Ferro-cement. This present
study deals with the behavior of Ferro cement deep beams under central point load. A total of 27 rectangular deep beams have been
casted of dimension 125 x 250mm and the lengths of beams have been varied along with the variation of wire mesh and mortar
strength. Before testing, the top surfaces of these beams were white washed, to get a clear picture of crack pattern. Along with these
beams 27 cubes have been casted with the dimensions 7.06 cm x 7.06 cm x 7.06 cm. the compressive strength of mortar is determined.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2. DISCRIPTION
The ferrocement roof consists panels size
1.5mtrs.x1.2mtrs. approximately and ferrocement
portal and purlins replacing AC sheets and structurals
steel trusses and purlins. Unlike AC sheet Metal, FRP
roof all the ferrocement panels are joined
monolithically. There will be no nuts and bolt
arrangement as in the case of AC sheet Metal, FRP
roofs. But ferrocement panels shall be connected to
the purlins and portal by welding and in-situ
vibrated cement matrix application. Or Ferrocement
mega tiles of size 1.5 x 1.2 mtr. or more are laid just like
Mangalore tiles with most effective interlocking
arrangement to prevent rain water entry below. There
will be least heat transfer as compared to AC sheets
etc. The space below the roof shall be neat and clean
since the steel trusses are eliminated. There will be far
better storage space below without obstruction.
3. The ferrocement roof is superior as compared to
A.C. sheets roof and metal sheets as below: -
Ferrocement can be monolith, jointless roof
eliminating trusses and purlins nuts and bolts and joints
as in the case of AC sheet/ Metal sheets roof.
Ferrocement roof shall transfer much less heat as
compared to AC sheet/ Metal sheets roof. It can be
fully insulated against heat transfer. Jointless
ferrocement roof prevent humidity transfer inside.
Since structural trusses, purlins are eliminated space
there is more storage space.
4. Since ferrocement roof is monolith, there
is no phenomenon such as cracking as
in the case of AC sheet/ Metal sheets
roof and leakage of rainwater and
corrosion of nuts and bolts, therefore,
least maintenance operations. Soffit of
ferrocement roofs is neat and clean as
compared to AC sheet/ Metal sheets
roof since there are no steel trusses or
tubular trusses.
5. In the long run ferrocement roof are very economical.
The performance of gutters and valleys is superior.
Because these are integral with roof.
The life of tubular truss roof is much less in view of
earlier loss of strength due to corrosion.
Wooden trusses purlins require replacement off and
on. In ferrocement roof, no replacement is necessary.
Ferrocement roof is trouble free and durable for
decades.
