Virtualize Your Disaster! Remove the Disaster from “Disaster Recovery”Emirates Computers
The document discusses how virtualization with VMware can improve disaster recovery by eliminating hardware dependencies, simplifying the recovery process, enabling easier testing, and reducing infrastructure costs. Key benefits include automating recovery, reducing downtime to under 4 hours from over 40 hours, consolidating production and recovery servers, and centrally managing recovery plans with VMware Site Recovery Manager.
Operating system-level virtualization imposes little overhead as guest programs use the host OS interface without emulation. However, it is not as flexible as other approaches as it can only host the same OS as the host and not different OSes. Some OS virtualizers provide file-level copy-on-write to back up data more efficiently than block-level schemes used by whole system virtualizers. Restrictions are placed on containers to prevent modifying the kernel or accessing certain resources. Virtualization has matured and is used for server consolidation, operational agility through live migration, high availability, and improving responsiveness of IT operations.

This document discusses storage virtualization and the growing costs of storage. It notes that data is growing rapidly at 50% per year, which has led to higher redundancies and storage comprising 15% of total IT budgets. Companies are struggling to control this rapid data growth and lack efficient storage solutions. Storage virtualization allows applications to access storage without knowledge of where it resides, which helps improve performance, scalability, utilization and disaster recovery capabilities while reducing costs. However, the cost of storage is still increasing even as hardware costs decrease due to rising management and administration expenses associated with storage.
Virtualization is a technology that abstracts computer resources by transforming hardware into software. It allows multiple operating systems to run simultaneously on a single computer as virtual machines. There are different types of virtualization including full virtualization, paravirtualization, and hardware-assisted virtualization. Virtualization enables key aspects of cloud computing like scalability, availability, manageability, and performance by pooling and abstracting hardware resources and allowing virtual machines to be easily provisioned, migrated, and scaled.

Climate Impact of Software Testing at Nordic Testing DaysKari Kakkonen
My slides at Nordic Testing Days 6.6.2024
Climate impact / sustainability of software testing discussed on the talk. ICT and testing must carry their part of global responsibility to help with the climat warming. We can minimize the carbon footprint but we can also have a carbon handprint, a positive impact on the climate. Quality characteristics can be added with sustainability, and then measured continuously. Test environments can be used less, and in smaller scale and on demand. Test techniques can be used in optimizing or minimizing number of tests. Test automation can be used to speed up testing.

HCL Notes and Domino License Cost Reduction in the World of DLAUpanagenda
Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technologies, XML continues to play a vital role in structuring, storing, and transporting data across diverse systems. Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:
In his public lecture, Christian Timmerer provides insights into the fascinating history of video streaming, starting from its humble beginnings before YouTube to the groundbreaking technologies that now dominate platforms like Netflix and ORF ON. For a test restore with FastBack Snapshots, provided
5 x different dated recovery points, instantly
available – done in less than a minute
Made these same recovery points available on a
different machine.

Server component isn’t clusterable
DR uses FTP, although TSM integration sidesteps this
Necessary in an environment with hardware
snapshots already a standard?
Any benefits of software over hardware snapshots?
Cost and portability benefits?
What FastBack is not…
12. Branch and remote offices
Provides a *simple*, lightweight yet powerful local
protection solution
Still enables offsite/DR to central location
Departments/network ‘cells’ within the DC that may
have particularly tight recovery requirements which
FastBack can facilitate
Integration with core TSM product to maintain
offsite/longer-term retention
Where it may fit
13. Great technology, FastBack *murders* some of the core
TSM products for backup and particularly recovery in some
traditionally troublesome areas
Is there a compelling argument between software and
hardware snapshots?
In an existing TSM house, additional FastBack
infrastructure is a pain
Ideally, integrate this useful technology further into the
core TSM Server product.
Conclusions…
