Alec Jeffreys Research Paper
There are many types of investigations. Forensic investigations have been used all throughout history.
There are many different parts many different scientists have contributed to forensic investigations.
Missing persons, arson, murder, and kidnapping all require the help of a forensic investigation. One of
these contributors reigns to be a man by the name of Alec Jeffreys. His addition to the large amount of
information regarding forensic investigations has proved extremely useful to society.
Jeffreys, who was born in Oxford, lived in family that fell in the middle class budget. (Alec Jeffreys
biography)He only stayed in this area for six years. In 1956, Alec and his family took their stuff to

He was in his lab, which is located in Leicester, when he noticed the X ray film image from a DNA
experiment. (Alec Jeffreys biography)The experiment showed similarities and differences between the
DNA of several members of his technician s family. (Alec Jeffreys biography)Shortly, Jeffreys
understood the possibility of DNA fingerprinting, This process uses variations in the genetic code that
identify individuals.(Alec Jeffreys biography) The method he learned has proved critical in forensic
science. This method is a cornerstone to things the police force accomplish. It also helps to relinquish
problems involving paternity or immigration. Even in non human affairs, Jeffreys acquired the only
centre in the world, in 1987, that did DNA fingerprinting. (Alec Jeffreys biography)At the time, the
centre was extremely busy and received attention from all around the world. (Alec Jeffreys
biography)DNA fingerprinting was first used in 1985. Jeffreys was asked to solve a immigration
problem to determine the family of a British Boy whose family was from Ghana.(Alec Jeffreys
biography) The case was easily solved when the DNA results showed the boy was of close relation to
the other members of the family. The family was ecstatic to get their son, all of this would not be
possible if it were not for DNA fingerprinting. Fingerprinting was first used in the field of law in
1983.(Alec Jeffreys biography) Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth were raped and killed in
Narborough, Leicestershire. (Alec Jeffreys biography)The murderer, Colin Pitchfork, was convicted
and identified after a sample of his semen matched samples taken from the two deceased girls. This
played a pivotal role in the identifying of a murderer. His work proved the real killer, and also saved a
man who was almost falsely convicted of this murder. If it were not for Alec Jeffreys work, an

Samuel Beckett, Absurdism, Existentialism, And Nihilism
Philosophy in the 20th century was something that rocked the world in Pre, During, and Post War
Europe. There was much death and question of human mortality and morals. Perfectly fine human
beings performing unimaginable atrocities, and then even more average humans suffering against each
other. It was an era of hopelessness and despair. Folks were wondering what could this existence come
to? What could it call absolve to become? Soren Kierkegaard, Albert Camus, Friedrich Nietzsche,
Jean Paul Sartre and others explored the ideas and schisms that deconstructed the world into base,
human centric concepts. Absurdism, Existentialism, and Nihilism are three concepts that are

The Theme Of Darkness In Poor Folk By Dostoyevsky
In the field of replaying books, as she points out, Dostoyevsky intentionally misapprehend Pushkin s
and Gogol s Stationmaster and The Overcoat , respectively, so as to write Poor Folk . This is however
another of his strategies for enlarging the understanding of the protagonist in his epistolary novel. The
theme of darkness is acknowledged to him and expands in his maturity when he wrote; White Nights,
Notes from the Underground that portray the anti hero; Essential Explanation, The Demons show the
growing of his demonic and devilish interpretation and idiosyncrasy, however coping with a genuine
Orthodox tradition. The range of interpretation is narrowed down the demonic, the suicide and hatred
of life and divinity. In the Brothers Karamazov, apparently, a detective story, the catholic church is

Appropriation Of Mindfulness
Mindfulness has slowly crept into modern day America and has become commonly thought as
unattached from its Buddhist origin. In order to attract customers and adherents, writers and teachers
of mindfulness separated it from Buddhism. Secular practitioners still benefit from mindfulness, not as
a religious meditative ritual, but as a concentration and thinking technique that can improve their
wellbeing and efficiency. Even if mindfulness is used as an improved thinking tool and health
practice, it remains linked to the Buddhist religion and ideals, and a clear ignorance of that
relationship is wrong no matter the benefits. The appropriation of mindfulness into secular America
also definitely waters down core Buddhist principles such as the ... Show more content on

To secular teachers it is reasonable to completely ignore mindfulness Buddhist roots in order to
propagate it further. And one could argue that in fact that applies well to the idea of stopping the
suffering and the open approach to different beliefs that is an attribute of Buddhism. Yet, however true
that might be, it would be quixotic to think that modern secular mindfulness is being distributed solely
for its benefits to society. The advertisers and magazines sell out mindfulness as a product. They have
commercialized it into sessions, trainings and therapies for profits a complete shift away from the
principles of Buddhist teachings. If the real goal was to promote mindfulness for its health and
productivity benefits then its Buddhist roots would not be an issue. Most people would arguably want
to practice mindfulness to improve themselves regardless of the source. So in truth, it is the act of
selling mindfulness that, seeking to maximize its outreach, requires mindfulness as a completely

Essay On Superintendent
REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE
Introduction
Preparing teachers, principals and superintendents has been the responsibility of schools of education
across the United States. Once they have completed their preparation these educators must tackle the
challenge of educating America s youth. Education is still a major factor in the social, psychological,
and financial development of one individual; it determines the difference between a life fully lived and
a life only dreamed of while opportunity passes by. The role of the superintendent today serves many
roles; the main function of the position is leadership. The superintendent as the top executive of a
given school district, including a group of schools affiliated with the public school system. A direct
connection exists between the superintendent and the school board that he or she serves. A
superintendent reports to the local school board, typically a group of elected officials set to manage
and organize the schools in that particular geographical area. The main responsibility of the
superintendent is to make sure that the schools under his or her jurisdiction stay within budgetary
constraints and provide an effective learning community for all children within his or her district.
Under the directive of the school board the superintendent implements directives, manages the hiring
of teaching staff, and oversees disciplinary actions that deal with the student body as a whole. With the
school board the superintendent maps out the

Arab Nationalism and Syria Essay
Description of Country Syria is a country located in the Middle East, bordering the Mediterranean
Sea, between Lebanon and Turkey. The modern nation of Syria did not exist until the 20th century,
although the idea of Syria has been in existence since at least the time of the Prophet Muhammad. The
name Syria , was first used by the Greeks, historically identifying the region at the eastern end of the
Mediterranean lying between Egypt and Asia Minor. Greater Syria, the larger region (called this to
distinguish it from the nation state with the same name today), located at the crossroads of three

her tormentors had to be identified, evidence had to be gathered, and witnesses willing to speak out.

Rhetorical Devices In Julius Caesar s Speech
In Shakespeare s play of Julius Caesar, Rhetoric is the art of convincing and persuading people by
language through public speaking which is used in Julius Caesar s speeches. These devices are used in
Brutus and Antony statements throughout the play. Brutus is a conspirator who kills Caesar since he
fears that he will have too much power over Rome and its people. In comparison, Marc Antony is the
closest friend and most trusted to Caesar, who persuades the people of Rome against Conspirators for
killing Caesar. (Thesis statement) Brutus appeals to logic when he explains his actions in Caesar
funeral, where as Antony appeals to emotions, playing with the audience feelings to seek justice upon
the conspirators. Brutus gives a speech to the people of Rome to explain his reasoning in killing
Caesar by using logic. He claims that he killed Caesar because he loves Rome and fears for well being
of the people since Caesar was an ambitious man. Brutus expresses feelings by saying Had you rather
have Caesar were living, and die all slaves/ than that Caesar were dead to live all free men? (III.I.175).
Brutus uses rhetorical questions to make a point to the audience of saying that Rome is better without
Caesar because Caesar if he was alive they would all be slaves since Caesar would have ultimate
power and control. Brutus showing facts to the people of Rome, Brutus s argument becomes
influential to win over the audience. Throughout his Aboelfoul|2 speech, he calls Caesar ambitious

Princess Andromeda Research Paper
My Favorite Constellation Andromeda
The Andromeda Constellation is located in the northern hemisphere, it can be seen at latitudes
between +90°and 40° and is best visible at 9 p.m. during the month of November. The constellation is,
also, home to the Andromeda Galaxy, that resides 2,5 light years from earth. This constellation is
beyond complex, for the myth that names it, as well for being next doors neighbors with it s galaxy,
thus my interest in it.
The constellation was named after Princess Andromeda, also known as The Chained Woman wich is,
too, the nickname of the own constellation . Andromeda was known for her beauty, and her mom one
day claimed that she was even more beautiful then the Nereids, a particularly alluring group of sea
nymphs. The Nereids were outraged by the affirmation and decided to ask Poseidon, the God of The
Seas to give her a lesson. Poseidon then send a monster to destroy Andomedra s father s territory, and
Andomedra decided to sacrifice herself to pay for the sins of her mother, and then was given chained
to Poseidon to die. The story goes on, and it ends with Perseus the son of Poseidon saving her, but that
s the bit that named the constellation. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

My First Day Of Math
I am writing to you to talk about the complicated semester I have had in Math.
Our first day of math we talked about the Handshake Problem. We needed to figure out how many
handshakes there would be in our class of sixteen students but we could not shake the same hands
twice. Our class got in a circle began to model out the problem by shaking each other s hand but then
we had to figure out a formula. A common method that I have used throughout the whole semester is
making a table. I made a table and was able to make the conclusion that the number of handshakes
were increasing by counting numbers. By that time class had ended and for homework we needed to
come up with a formula for this problem and reflect. When I first tried to find an equation for this
problem is 16 x 15 = 240. This equation did not work because I was counting for shaking the same
handshakes twice. If I would have divided it 240 by 2 I would have got 120 and that would have been
the correct answer. After careful discuss, in class and out of class thinking our final conclusion was
that the formula was n(n 1)/2. N is for the number of people that come into the room. N 1 is the one
less hand the next person will have to shake from the previous person. This equation worked for any
number of people that needed to shake hands. One of the goals of the class is to acquire numerous
strategies for approaching and solving unfamiliar mathematical problems and the habits of posing new
problems. My professor

Video Games Are Not Art By Roger Ebert
Do you like art? Do you like video games? Have you ever wondered if video games can ever be

Video Games Are Not Art by Roger Ebert. He explains that videos games can never be art because it
is a disgrace tp professional artist out them to compare videos games with art that actually have
meaning behind each corner, idea, color, structure, design. For example, art is identified as the
expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as
painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional
power. Videos are meant to be played and enjoyed not analyzed and broken down as a art piece or
never will nor it be. Overall, I think the argument presented in Video games can never be art by Roger
Ebert is not partially effective on the target audience of people who believe in his opinion. As we

argument (Ethos), followed by the middle logos, and finally the weakest of them all would be pathos.

Melting Temperature Lab Report
The purpose of this experiment is to observe what happens when heat is taken away from pdB and
added to it, and to determine the melting/freezing points of the pdB. Our group did this by heating up
the pdB in a bunsen burner until it completely phase changed into liquid. Then, we placed the test tube
containing liquid pdB in cool tap water recording the temperatures of both the water and the pdB
every 30 seconds until they were within 3°C of each other. After, we placed a test tube containing
frozen solid pdB in hot tap water recording the temperatures of the pdB and the water every 30
seconds until they were within 3°C of each other. To finish the experiment, we graphed our data in one
graph. The graph showed, and also what we observed in the lab, that when the water and the pdB were
close to being within 3°C of each other, there were signs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that the solid pdB and the liquid pdB phase changed at 330 to 420 seconds because during
a phase change, the temperature of the substance always remains constant, thus why melting point and
freezing point is the same temperature. Although temperature remains constant in a phase change, it
does not necessarily indicate one; the water day #1 curve had the temperature (x) remained constant
the whole experiment, but there was no phase change when we observed it in the lab. The graph
makes us able to estimate the time when the pdB and the water reach temperature equilibrium, which
is when two different temperature substances touch each other and the hotter one (heat source)
releases its heat into the cooler one (heat sink) until the temperatures become the same (the total heat
released from from heat source should equal the total heat gained by the heat sink). When the
temperature of the two day #1 curves or the two day #2 curves intersect is when they have reached
temperature equilibrium; their temperatures will be the

The connections of the circuit is shown above in the diagram. The connection shows that the entry exit
is linked to the 7 segment LED and thus using an arduino, we could make a simple system. The IR
sensors were digital and thus the connections are made to the digital side of the arduino mode. The 7
segment LED is connected to the digital inputs of the arduino beard. The servo motor is also
connected to the arduino board and the board was programmed so as to give the desired output. The
LED is fixed to number 9 in the beginning i.e. when no car is in the parking lot. Then as the car enters
the IR sensor detects the car, opens the barricade for the car and reduces the number on the LED to 8.
This continues till the number of the available parking lots are zero. Also when the car exits, the
number on the LED is increased by 1. When the number of available spaces is 0, then if a car tries to
enter, the door will not open.
VII. FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS
[pic]
In the further research, there are two more factors that should be added to make the system more
reliable. Firstly, IR sensors should be placed over every parking lot.

In April 1996, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) brought a suit seeking
damages of as much as $300 thousands per women on behalf of 300 female plant employees. The suit
came after 15 month investigations of several sexual harassments complaints at MMMA.
Men vs. Women The idea of different subcultures for males and females, although they live in the
same country, taught the same values, and eat the same food, is not new. Although men and women
live under the same conditions, they are expected to behave and respond differently. Thus as Maltz
puts it: The different social needs of men and women have led them to sexually differentiated
communication cultures, with each sex learning a different set of skills for manipulating words (Maltz,
p.200). Maltz explains this by saying that each one of us learns his communication culture through the
period of, approximately, age 5 to 15, when boys and girls interact socially primarily with members of
their own sex . Not only boys and girls learn to respond differently, but they learn, self consciously, to
differentiate, with exaggeration, their behavior from the other sex (Maltz, p.203). If we talk in terms of
Hofstede four dimensions of cultural differences, then American men culture could be described a
culture that

The Grand Impact Of Public Bullying By Cyberbullying
The grand impact of public humiliation brought on by cyberbullying, and those using this for a
financial gain. With just one click someone s personal reputation can be shattered instantaneously. For
some people the public humiliation had been unbearable, and tragically take the lives. Lewinsky
believes we need a shift to a long held value of compassion and empathy that we now lack. I agree
with this argument. For the first time cyberbullying is leading to suicidal ideations. The invasion of
others privacy has emerged a marketplace for public humiliation. The responsibilities that come with
our freedom of expression. I will now discuss my evidence.
For the first time cyberbullying has led to suicidal ideations as a meta analysis done out of the

but online, technologically enhanced shaming is amplified, uncontained, and permanently accessible.
What Lewinsky is stating with this that we have always had public humiliation however not to the
degree that we do now with social media. Things would happen and it would be shameful, however
once people forgot about it that was the end of it. Now with social media scandals take on a whole

Larry E. Tise s Conquering The Sky
Preface Imagine looking up in the sky and not seeing a single plane or satellite. Some people may not
notice it, but seeing planes in the sky has become a natural everyday sight. Without the brothers,
Wilbur and Orville Wright, this may not have been possible. The Wright brothers simple success of
achieving air travel has led to more than they could have possibly imagined. They not only built the
first plane, but they set down a building block towards modern planes and space travel. The Wright
brothers invention of the plane was a major turning point in history, not only leading to modern
aircraft we have today commercial and war but also a stepping stone towards space travel. Originally
from Dayton, Ohio, Orville Wright and Wilbur Wright were four years apart. Although they were only
bicycle makers, both brothers had a love of science and kept up with the latest researchers, one of their
favorites being Otto Lilienthal, a German aviator. His work inspired the brothers to start their own

small aspects, but around this time the media had gotten news. To ensure nobody stole their ideas,
from then on they tested in secret, flying as little as possible, and the publicity died down. Larry E.
Tise writes in his book Conquering the Sky , The Wrights had released no picture nor allowed one to

The Characteristics Of Crossword Puzzles And Dementia

It is often said that puzzles do many good things for the brain. They are challenging and force people
to actively think. With the rise of dementia in America, public interest in finding a cure or prevention
method has increased. Scientist and academics are now constantly attempting to solve the issue. A
hypothesis that many of them have, is that doing cognitive stimulating activities will prevent the onset
of dementia. There have been several studies on crossword puzzles and whether or not they can
prevent cognitive decline. Their popularity in society combined with their accessibility and low cost

There are two different claims: it helps fight dementia and it doesn t help fight dementia. Each side
has compelling arguments and supporting evidence for their claims, which makes coming to a
conclusion about the issue quite difficult.
You can read and analyze the studies published and attempt to come to a conclusion yourself, but

Stalin s Launch of the Great Terror Essays
Stalin s Launch of the Great Terror The Great Terror of 1936 1938 came after a period of success, with
the completion of the First Five Year Plan and the Peasants had been collectivised to make food for the
workers in the factories. Yet there was still opposition to Stalin s leadership inside the party from
Ryutin; Ryutin argued that Stalin should be removed from the position of General Secretary. Stalin
then called for the execution of Ryutin (most communist did not believe in killing their own), Kirov,
Stalin s supporter and the head of Leningrad headed the majority against the execution. This made
Kirov very popular in the party and when there was a vote in the Central Congress for the ... Show

He also admitted to conspiring with Trotsky to destroy Communism this conspiracy was called the
Trotskyite Zinovievite Conspiracy. The other Trials were in 1937 with Trotsky, but he was not in the
country, yet they still said he was the lead conspiracer and a counter revolutionary. In 1938, Bukharin
was put on trial, he admitted to nearly everything except, conspiring to plotting the murder of Lenin.
These trials made the Russian people believe that there was a conspiracy going on and that anyone
could be in on it. This made workers suspicious of anyone who did not produce as much as their
fellow workers, this meant that everyone worked hard. This was a brilliant way of getting the workers
to produce more to push crash industrialisation along, if there had not been the conspiracy theory then
Russia would not have acted like a Totalitarian State and therefore not have been as productive. The
theory scared the Russian people from even thinking anti communist thoughts in case they were taken
away to labor camps. This fear gave total control to Stalin over all areas of Russia as no one wanted to
be sent to the labor camps, so this was a very effective way of controlling the people of Russia.

The water of the Gulf stretched out before her, gleaming with the million lights of the sun. The voice

Details from this novel by Kate Chopin demonstrate how this quote aptly captures the theme and spirit
of The Awakening, as well as the situation of women in the nineteenth century and even today. First,
one most look to the white beach, Edna has trod on her entire life. This beach is the safe and sturdy
ground that Adele Ratignolle thrives upon. Attired all in white, Madame Ratignolle embodies the very
spirit of the mother woman. They were women who idolized their children, worshiped their husbands,
and esteemed it a holy privilege to efface themselves as individuals and grow wings as ministering
angels. Ch. IV, pg 385. However, on this white beach, where women in white brood over all, . . .Edna
was not a mother woman. Ch. IV, pg 385. Rather than dig her toes into the colorless sands, Edna
prefers meandering walks, perhaps on the shoreline itself. The imagery of Edna walking along as the
waters lap at her feet is profound.
Edna is thus far trapped on the ground, not yet knowing how to swim, but wanting desperately to
swim into the boundless water. Therefore, she must be content with life on land, experiencing only a
portion of the fluid as it swirls around her ankles. So Edna marries a man her father approves of, has
children her husband approves of, and mimes a life society approves of. Here and there, the water of
living laps at Edna s feet tempting her to jump in.

Meeting Of The Minds Project
Personal Reflection Paper Prior to the Meeting of the Minds project, at the beginning of the semester,
I did not think this course on would have much of an effect on me. However, as the weeks went by, I
began to have a different idea of what it meant to be a critical thinker, and I quickly realized how
important it was for me to embody the definition of this type of thinking. As the school year
progressed, I found myself analyzing my perception of the topics friends and family discussed from an
outsider s perspective. While I used to think of myself as a critical thinker, this class made me evaluate
how good I am at analyzing different subjects and whether I actually reach good educated conclusions.
When finding claims to research, I realized how important it is to be educated on different subjects,
regardless of whether it affects one directly or not. Since I have an interest in the medical field, I chose
to find a claim that pertain in one way or another to medicine. Additionally, since I wanted the claim
to relate to patient care, I decided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Consequently, I believe this skill will help me have a more comprehensive view on a wide array of
topics because it will allow me to strengthen my position by evaluating how apt is the evidence
presented. In addition, this project has reminded me of how important it is to be informed on different
issues that may or may not come to affect me. Along with this, I have also become cautious of how
authors or speakers portray their stance on a subject, and whether or not they are biased, and as a
result, I believe I now can reach educated conclusions. Thus, all these new acquired skills have
allowed me to become a better critical thinker, for these have given me a more open minded
perspective that helps me not only in other subjects, but also in the real

Description Of The Red Kangaroo
Describing Movement The Red Kangaroo
Introduction
The Red Kangaroo Macropus rufus is the largest of the marsupial family residing across the deserts
and grasslands of Australia (SDZG, 2011). The Red Kangaroo is a herbivorous species with an
unusual method of locomotion, hopping, also known as saltatory locomotion; hopping is unique to
members of the kangaroo and wallaby family (Dawson, 1995). A red kangaroo is capable of hopping
at speeds of 30mph using its muscular hind legs to propel and tail as counterbalance and support
(Marshall Cavendish Corporation, 2010). The kangaroo s body and musculoskeletal structure of large
hindlimbs and short forelimbs has evolved to adapt to its hopping gait. Ancestors of the species were
quadrupedal, the only exception to this evolutionary change is the smaller Musky Rat Kangaroo
Hypsiprymnodon moschatus which still uses a quadrupedal plantigrade gait (Richardson, 2012).
Why Hopping?
It is commonly known that Australia is a large country, and with a total of 7,692,024 km2, it is the
sixth largest country in the world (GA, 2014). Considering most of the land is arid, there is a limited
amount of resources readily available for the grazing kangaroo, so it is necessary for it to be able to
travel far distances efficiently to reach water before dehydrating. Kangaroos are prey animals, with the
main predator being the Dingo with additional predation coming from commercial shooting for human
consumption (Dawson, 1995), the Red Kangaroo has

Stereotypes Of Women In A Nuclear Family
It is a nuclear family being advertised in the film. According to the chapter 1 in book, nuclear family
includes a breadwinner father, a homemade mother and children living together in and independent
household. Family structure like nuclear may have commons like: equal relationships and democratic
atmosphere, good for young people s independence, and easy to meet different generations of different
lifestyle pursuit.
The film descried the process from children back from school to prepare the dinner and wait for the
father then introduced some table manner during the pleasant diner time. The stereotype I noticed is
that women play the role to arrange the whole family like cooking the dinner, and providing the family
a warmer atmosphere. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Before the start of dinner, the whole family prey for the grace of the mealtime, which shows the
respect of the nature gift. And then father served mother first, which shows the equality of men and
women. Men at the time presented the gentleness and high standard civilization to the women. While
in return, everyone should wait for father finish server himself, and begin dinner after mother begins.
It could regard as another aspect of respect. As for the conversation during the meal time, although
they are following the key note as pleasant and relax, the atmosphere was actually pretty formal and
stiff. Table manner like conversation are supposed to be led by father and mother, and family members
are not encouraged to manipulate the conversation, which make others uncomfortable. Thus noticing
whether others are bored with the topic is important for the speaker. Moreover, they are not supposed
to discuss some unpleasant topics or discontent of the standard living, at this point, children show
great respect to the parent and bet thankful to the life they provide. Besides, young generation should
show respect of each other as well. No offensive remarks assault to brothers or sisters or even outside
the family cycle. I highly agree with the point narrator said in the film that be yourself but be the best

Figurative Language In The Treasure Of Lemon Brown
Ellen Hunnicutt once said . . . figurative language adds pizzazz. It raise work above the plain, the dull,
the ordinary. This quote explains how using figurative language helps create a more interesting and
useful way of expressing a tone of a character or event.Figurative language is a uses of words,
phrases, and sentences to help to make the characters and story line come more to live in the reader s
mind. Some examples of Figurative languages are similes, metaphors, hyperbole, personification,
onomatopoeia, and many more. Figurative language help the reader see tone and mood in each of the
example of figurative language because the reader can see or image the event or character in their
mind. In a story, poem, or any form of writing, figurative language is extremely important to a reader
because if a sentence didn t have figurative language the reader may not find the story or poem
interesting or even find it confusing and difficult to understand. In addition the use of figurative
language is crucial when an author is writing. In the stories The Treasure of Lemon Brown by Walter
Dean Myers and The Pigman, By Paul Zindel, the authors used Figurative language to develop the
tone of their stories so that that the reader can visualize it in their mind.
In the stories The Treasure of Lemon Brown by Walter Dean Myers, the author uses figurative
language to help the reader understand the tone of the story. The figurative language used in this
sentence is personification to show how the setting. In this event A boy named Grey Ridley was
walking down a street and saw the leafs blowing, Gusts of wind made bits of paper dance between the
papers cars . In other words this shows us that this street may be dirty, this may not be a good
environment, and how bits of paper dancing around is a result of wind so it must be a cold fall
weather. In addition later in the story Walter uses personification again to descriptive the mood. Grey
and Lemon Brown are in a abandoned house and both of them hear a car pass by, A car passed, its tires
hissing over the wet street and it s red tails lights glowing in the darkness. The intention of the author
was to help create the intense, creepy, and spooky mood for the reader. In

Effects Of Xenia In The Iliad
Xenia is an obligatory, socially regulated hospitality shown to suppliants and strangers by god fearing
hosts. This notion can be broken into two aspects: conduct and food and libations. When welcomed in
to a residence, hosts are expected to treat a guest respectfully and amicably this then transitions to the
food and libations portion of xenia. This facet revolves less on entertainment, but rather is symbolic of
a host opening their home as a place for a suppliant to rest and find asylum from the woes of travel. It
is the recipient s responsibility to treat the host with respect, as they are visitors. I assert that xenia has
a direct effect on a relationship and its ensuing trajectory because respect is the foundation of xenia;
these effects can be seen throughout The Iliad and The Odyssey, particularly in the interactions of ...

Spoils were an important part of war during the time of The Iliad, and could be items of value or

Washington Organized An Effective Approach Of Gradualism...
Washington organized an effective approach of gradualism among blacks but was disrupted by
militant leaders like W.E.B. Dubois. After reconstruction, the hopes for full citizenship rights were
broken when the government renewed white supremacist control to the South. The government
adopted a laissez faire policy, and the Jim Crow laws brought social, occupation, and educational
discrimination to the American Negro. In 1896, the Supreme Court s decision in Plessy v. Ferguson
strengthened the segregation of public facilities in the South. Some leaders supported violence, some
urged a return to Africa, and most encouraged peaceful means to change the conditions. Some
supported a fight for civil rights, especially the right to vote and others wanted blacks to become
skilled workers. These two approaches are called the economic strategy and the political strategy.
Washington supported the gradualist economic strategy. He wanted whites to agree to black progress
in agriculture, education, and economics. He believed that African Americans should be able to have
some jobs and get some education but did not believe complete equality was a practical goal. African
Americans should work hard for a job, not have it handed to them. Agriculture was one of the most
important aspects to his idea of racial uplift. He supported education in farming and industrial skills,
crafts, and development of enterprise, patience, and thrift. He believed they would receive respect
from whites and gain

As factories and mining centers where developed, cities and towns were built around them. People
who live in cities usually live in large apartment buildings. There is good heath care, schools, but they
are generally very crowded. Large roadways and railroad systems also helped to spread urbanization
throughout the country. In China, because of communism, there are no classes. People are either poor
or wealthy, there is not much of a median. Government officials live in the bigger cities in large
estates. Today, China is on the cutting edge of architecture. Huge skyscrapers have been built and
other nations have been taking in what the Chinese have built. In earlier years China was the most
technologically advanced civilization in the world. Reminders of this era still stand today, like the
great wall and the emperors palace. Also, we can see reminders of this period in our own country for
example, the Chinese theater in Hollywood. Now China s style in decoration is a popular trend it s art
and luxurious nature. In conclusion, housing and the way people live, are very similar yet different

The financial, internal business processes, and people areas are internal. The customer area is external.
Chapter 12 elaborates on this framework and the Balanced Scorecard.
_ Market focus: Growth comes from focusing on your customers and delivering superior value to
them consistently year after year. Built into your strategic plan is a market focus framework because
of how critical this is to your organizational growth.
Who uses strategic plans?
Everyone or at least every company and organization that wants to be successful. Companies in every
industry, in every part of the country, and in most of the Fortune 500 use strategic plans. Organizations
within the nonprofit, government, and small to big business sectors also have strategic plans. Just
exactly what is strategic planning?
The term strategic planning refers to a coordinated and systematic process for developing a plan for
the overall direction of your endeavor for the purpose of optimizing future potential. For a profit
making business, this process involves many questions:
_ What is the mission and purpose of the business?
_ Where do we want to take the business?
_ What do we sell currently? What could we sell in the future?
_ To whom shall we sell it?
_ What do we do that is unique?
_ How shall we beat or avoid competition?

The U.S. Central Banking
The designers of the Federal Reserve Act deliberately dismiss the idea of a solitary national bank.
Rather, they accommodated a focal keeping money framework with three striking elements:
1. a focal representing Board,
2. a decentralized working system of 12 Reserve Banks
3. a blend of open and private qualities.
Despite the fact that parts of the Federal Reserve System impart a few attributes to private area
substances, the Federal Reserve was built to serve public interest. Three essential elements make up
the Federal Reserve System:
1. the Board of Governors,
2. the Federal Reserve Banks
3. the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC).
The Board of Governors, is an organization of the government that reports to and is specifically
responsible to report Congress (see figure 1.2), gives general direction to the System and administers
the 12 Reserve Banks.
Within the said System, certain duties are shared across the Board of Governors and the Federal
Reserve Banks and

Humanism In Our Town By Thornton Wilder
Our Town is Thornton Wilder s 1938 play. The play is based on urban life in the early twentieth
century. It is set in the small fictional town known as Grover s Corners, in New Hampshire. One of the
main themes that are effectively explored in Thornton Wilder s play is humanism. This paper defines
humanism and describes some humanism actions from the play.
The term humanism refers to any mode or system of thought in which human dignity, welfare, values
and interests predominate (Katie, 2013). It is a philosophy, belief or method whose main emphasis is
on the realm of human beings and their daily lives. Humanism has both religious and secular
connotations. Religious humanism uses religious dogma and supernatural phenomena as the basis of
decision making. Secular humanism uses ethics, reason and human fulfillment in making moral
judgment. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To start with, the play demonstrates the fact that humanism is all about being concerned with the well
being of others. In his answer to the man who asks about what has been done to curb industrial
inequality and social injustice in the city, Web answers, Meantime, we do all we can to take care of
those who can t help themselves (Thornton Wilder, 1938,p.279). This shows that they are doing their
best to promote the wellbeing of all people in the town.
The play shows that humanism involves celebrating life. After she dies, Emily tries to return to earth
in order to relive even for a single day. When she realizes that this is impossible, she concludes that
live should be valued (Thornton Wilder, 1938). This instance shows that life should be considered as a
chance given for one to fulfill his or her own potential. Thornton Wilder uses his play to show that
seeking fame is part of humanity. For instance, George uses baseball and his pride to seek fame
(Thornton Wilder, 1938). This shows that an individual s interests should come first before those of

Compare And Contrast Hinduism And Buddhism
In early India, there were many types of religions, two of which being Hinduism and Buddhism. Both
Hinduism and Buddhism were extremely important religions in Early India. They shared some
similarities and differences in qualities regarding their origins, sacred texts, and different beliefs.
Hinduism believed in reincarnation and karma as it would help them in their coming life and will
move them higher on the caste system, opposed to Buddhism which believed more in doing the right
thing and not hurting anyone or anything because they believed that all deserve to be treated correctly.
Buddhism was not about the caste system like Hinduism, it was more about being a good human being
and that karma will return to you. The people that looked more in Buddhism were the people who
were the rejects of the caste system.
Hinduism and Buddhism shared many similarities and differences in their origins and
founders.Hinduism originated in early India, it evolved over time from the original Vedic religion of
the Aryans. It had no exact founder. Buddhism also originated in Early India, Siddhartha Gautama was
a king in the kshatriya system. Siddhartha Gautama was the founder of Buddhism, a person who
believed being kind to everyone and respectful, he did not believe in violence and achieved nirvana.
Both Hinduism and Buddhism came from the same place, showing how they had similar qualities.
Since Hinduism did not have a founder it is showing how they did not have someone leading them,

Simon Bolivar And George Washington
Two Heroes, One Continent
Simon Bolivar and George Washington were two heroes that were born in the new continent. They
had special military abilities and exceptional intelligence. They had won their place in history for
being the biggest liberators of our continent. Bolivar the father of the countries that he liberates and
Washington is the father of United States of America. Both had an aristocrat family and a good
education, but they fought against oppression and against the Spanish and British Empires.
Simon Jose Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolivar and Palacios was born in Caracas on July 24,
1783. He died in Santa Marta on December 17, 1830. Best known as Simon Bolivar. He was a
Venezuelan military and politician, founder of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The strategies of war for both were very different. Bolivar used strong military strategies and had a
brilliant use of cavalry and flanking. He was also a supporter of the use of the surprise factor in
battles. He had an advantage, the British forces helped him to win. Nevertheless, he participates and
win two big battles, Carabobo and Boyacá. Although originally Washington had advocated the
development of a traditional war, he was convinced of the effectiveness of harassing the British. I use
it by much the military tactic called Fabiana. One of the most important was the victory against of the
French invasion.
In terms of political strategies. the vision of bolivar always involved people as part of the nation.
Simon Bolivar was a stronger general. Was unable to create his republic. Bolivar tried to use authority
to create stability, but failed. in some years later his vision was clouded by the victory and began to
develop characteristics dictatorial. He was commonly seen as a dictator from his authoritative views.
He declared himself dictator of Gran Colombia in 1828.
Washington was the stronger leader for allowing his country to develop. Washington stood down from
commander in chief of the Continental Army in 1783, and allowed the government to develop itself by

The United Kingdom s Economy After The European Union
Early this year the United Kingdom held a referendum to decide whether to leave or stay apart of the
European Union. This event is called the Brexit (Britain exiting the European Union), but even though
the acronym only includes Britain it means the entirety of the United Kingdom. In the referendum,
most of England and Whales voted to leave while Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to stay.
Ultimately the United Kingdom s vote was won in favor of leaving the EU with a 51.9% vote to stay
and a 48.1% vote to leave (BBC News). Now the question is what does this mean for the UK and how
will this impact its economy in the future? It may be too early to tell how this will play out, but for us
to identify what is happening now we must thoroughly and truly understand the reasons for this Brexit
in the first place.
By looking at the United Kingdom s economy after the referendum, it seems that nothing has
drastically changed. According to the Financial Times the Britain s GDP economic growth is slow
compared to previous years; In the second quarter of 2012 their growth was at 1.1% which was the
highest they ve had since 2005 where it was a 1.3% growth. The Britain s economic growth now is
.5%; but why is that? How could they have gone from a 1.3% growth to .5% in four years? Well, the
3rd quarter of 2012 the Britain s when through a shattering recession where economic growth
plummeted to a .8% growth. Since then the Britain s has been fighting to keep their GDP growth rate

China Vs Jap More Than A Century Of Conflict
China vs. Japan: More than a century of conflict
Enchantria Fleming
Excelsior College
For more than a century, China and Japan have had conflict after conflict, from the first Sino Japanese
war between the Qing Empire and the Empire of Japan then the second Sino Japanese war nearly 50
years later. The conflict between these two countries stems from fights over territory to constant
scrutinization between the two because of cultural differences and what I believe has begun to exhibit
signs of cultural incompetence.
The First Sino Japanese war allowed Japan to emerge as a major world power while revealing the
weakness of the Chinese empire. Both China and Japan wanted to rule supreme over Korea. Korea
was already one of China s most significant clients. Japan started to notice Korea for its geographic
positioning and its natural resources (coal and iron). After Japan implemented Western technology,
Korea was forced to expose itself to trade with Japan and proclaim independence from China.
Japanese reformers attempted to overthrow the Korean government in 1884. Chinese troops rescued
the king killing several Japanese guards in the process. War was evaded between the two countries by
signing of the Li Ito convention, both countries had to withdraw troops from Korea. In 1894, Kim Ok
kyun, a pro Japanese Korean leader of the 1884 rebellion, was invited to Shanghai and assassinated.
His body was then placed aboard a Chinese warship and directed back to Korea, where it

The Objectives Of Senior Management
This is a type of risk that the CRO must assess within the goals of business continuity. The objective
of senior management is to be continuing operations as normal and business interruption risks affect
the ability of the organization to continue operations normally. The CRO should identify the activities
or accidents that would possibly interrupt business, determine the resources available internally to deal
with the loss, and ensure that any resources identified would be available to assist with this unlikely
event (Elliot, 2012). Securing this type of insurance seeks to transfer the risk of business interruption
by providing some mechanism for compensation to the bank and to its employees should a loss occur.
Enterprise Risk Management Using Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) techniques to assess risks for
the risk management program involves managing risks together as an overall risk program. It differs
from traditional risk management that looks at risks individually and manages each risk separately. By
integrating the traditional risks that are insurable risks into an ERM program, aids the organization in
implementing a strategic risk management program that encompasses the hazard risks along with
financial risks, operational risks, and strategic risks into a comprehensive risk management program
for the bank.
Financial Risks Financial risks are important for the CRO to address through the risk management
program. According to Elliott (2012), financial risks

Rhetorical Devices In Julius Caesar s Speech In Shakespeare s play of Julius Caesar, Rhetoric is the art of convincing and persuading people by language through public speaking which is used in Julius Caesar s speeches. These devices are used in Brutus and Antony statements throughout the play. Brutus is a conspirator who kills Caesar since he fears that he will have too much power over Rome and its people. In comparison, Marc Antony is the closest friend and most trusted to Caesar, who persuades the people of Rome against Conspirators for killing Caesar. (Thesis statement) Brutus appeals to logic when he explains his actions in Caesar funeral, where as Antony appeals to emotions, playing with the audience feelings to seek justice upon the conspirators. Brutus gives a speech to the people of Rome to explain his reasoning in killing Caesar by using logic. He claims that he killed Caesar because he loves Rome and fears for well being of the people since Caesar was an ambitious man. Brutus expresses feelings by saying Had you rather have Caesar were living, and die all slaves/ than that Caesar were dead to live all free men? (III.I.175). Brutus uses rhetorical questions to make a point to the audience of saying that Rome is better without Caesar because Caesar if he was alive they would all be slaves since Caesar would have ultimate power and control. The constellation was named after Princess Andromeda, also known as The Chained Woman wich is, too, the nickname of the own constellation . Andromeda was known for her beauty, and her mom one day claimed that she was even more beautiful then the Nereids, a particularly alluring group of sea nymphs. The Nereids were outraged by the affirmation and decided to ask Poseidon, the God of The Seas to give her a lesson. Poseidon then send a monster to destroy Andomedra s father s territory, and Andomedra decided to sacrifice herself to pay for the sins of her mother, and then was given chained to Poseidon to die. Our class got in a circle began to model out the problem by shaking each other s hand but then we had to figure out a formula. A common method that I have used throughout the whole semester is making a table. I made a table and was able to make the conclusion that the number of handshakes were increasing by counting numbers. By that time class had ended and for homework we needed to come up with a formula for this problem and reflect. When I first tried to find an equation for this problem is 16 x 15 = 240. This equation did not work because I was counting for shaking the same handshakes twice. If I would have divided it 240 by 2 I would have got 120 and that would have been the correct answer. After careful discuss, in class and out of class thinking our final conclusion was that the formula was n(n 1)/2. N is for the number of people that come into the room. N 1 is the one less hand the next person will have to shake from the previous person. This equation worked for any number of people that needed to shake hands. One of the goals of the class is to acquire numerous strategies for approaching and solving unfamiliar mathematical problems and the habits of posing new problems. My professor ... Details from this novel by Kate Chopin demonstrate how this quote aptly captures the theme and spirit of The Awakening, as well as the situation of women in the nineteenth century and even today. First, one most look to the white beach, Edna has trod on her entire life. This beach is the safe and sturdy ground that Adele Ratignolle thrives upon. Attired all in white, Madame Ratignolle embodies the very spirit of the mother woman. They were women who idolized their children, worshiped their husbands, and esteemed it a holy privilege to efface themselves as individuals and grow wings as ministering angels. Ch. IV, pg 385. However, on this white beach, where women in white brood over all, . . .Edna was not a mother woman. Ch. IV, pg 385. Rather than dig her toes into the colorless sands, Edna prefers meandering walks, perhaps on the shoreline itself. The imagery of Edna walking along as the waters lap at her feet is profound. Edna is thus far trapped on the ground, not yet knowing how to swim, but wanting desperately to swim into the boundless water. Therefore, she must be content with life on land, experiencing only a portion of the fluid as it swirls around her ankles. So Edna marries a man her father approves of, has children her husband approves of, and mimes a life society approves of. Here and there, the water of living laps at Edna s feet tempting her to jump in. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Meeting Of The Minds Project Personal Reflection Paper Prior to the Meeting of the Minds project, at the beginning of the semester, I did not think this course on would have much of an effect on me. However, as the weeks went by, I began to have a different idea of what it meant to be a critical thinker, and I quickly realized how important it was for me to embody the definition of this type of thinking. As the school year progressed, I found myself analyzing my perception of the topics friends and family discussed from an outsider s perspective. While I used to think of myself as a critical thinker, this class made me evaluate how good I am at analyzing different subjects and whether I actually reach good educated conclusions. • 26. Description Of The Red Kangaroo Describing Movement The Red Kangaroo Introduction The Red Kangaroo Macropus rufus is the largest of the marsupial family residing across the deserts and grasslands of Australia (SDZG, 2011). The Red Kangaroo is a herbivorous species with an unusual method of locomotion, hopping, also known as saltatory locomotion; hopping is unique to members of the kangaroo and wallaby family (Dawson, 1995). A red kangaroo is capable of hopping at speeds of 30mph using its muscular hind legs to propel and tail as counterbalance and support (Marshall Cavendish Corporation, 2010). The kangaroo s body and musculoskeletal structure of large hindlimbs and short forelimbs has evolved to adapt to its hopping gait. Ancestors of the species were quadrupedal, the only exception to this evolutionary change is the smaller Musky Rat Kangaroo Hypsiprymnodon moschatus which still uses a quadrupedal plantigrade gait (Richardson, 2012). Why Hopping? It is commonly known that Australia is a large country, and with a total of 7,692,024 km2, it is the sixth largest country in the world (GA, 2014). Considering most of the land is arid, there is a limited amount of resources readily available for the grazing kangaroo, so it is necessary for it to be able to travel far distances efficiently to reach water before dehydrating. Kangaroos are prey animals, with the main predator being the Dingo with additional predation coming from commercial shooting for human consumption (Dawson, 1995), the Red Kangaroo has ... When welcomed in to a residence, hosts are expected to treat a guest respectfully and amicably this then transitions to the food and libations portion of xenia. This facet revolves less on entertainment, but rather is symbolic of a host opening their home as a place for a suppliant to rest and find asylum from the woes of travel. It is the recipient s responsibility to treat the host with respect, as they are visitors. After reconstruction, the hopes for full citizenship rights were broken when the government renewed white supremacist control to the South. The government adopted a laissez faire policy, and the Jim Crow laws brought social, occupation, and educational discrimination to the American Negro. In 1896, the Supreme Court s decision in Plessy v. Ferguson strengthened the segregation of public facilities in the South. Some leaders supported violence, some urged a return to Africa, and most encouraged peaceful means to change the conditions. Some supported a fight for civil rights, especially the right to vote and others wanted blacks to become skilled workers. These two approaches are called the economic strategy and the political strategy. Washington supported the gradualist economic strategy. He wanted whites to agree to black progress in agriculture, education, and economics. He believed that African Americans should be able to have some jobs and get some education but did not believe complete equality was a practical goal. African Americans should work hard for a job, not have it handed to them. Agriculture was one of the most important aspects to his idea of racial uplift. The people that looked more in Buddhism were the people who were the rejects of the caste system. Hinduism and Buddhism shared many similarities and differences in their origins and founders.Hinduism originated in early India, it evolved over time from the original Vedic religion of the Aryans. It had no exact founder. Buddhism also originated in Early India, Siddhartha Gautama was a king in the kshatriya system. Siddhartha Gautama was the founder of Buddhism, a person who believed being kind to everyone and respectful, he did not believe in violence and achieved nirvana. Both Hinduism and Buddhism came from the same place, showing how they had similar qualities. Since Hinduism did not have a founder it is showing how they did not have someone leading them, ... • 44. The United Kingdom s Economy After The European Union Early this year the United Kingdom held a referendum to decide whether to leave or stay apart of the European Union. This event is called the Brexit (Britain exiting the European Union), but even though the acronym only includes Britain it means the entirety of the United Kingdom. In the referendum, most of England and Whales voted to leave while Northern Ireland and Scotland voted to stay. Ultimately the United Kingdom s vote was won in favor of leaving the EU with a 51.9% vote to stay and a 48.1% vote to leave (BBC News). Now the question is what does this mean for the UK and how will this impact its economy in the future? It may be too early to tell how this will play out, but for us to identify what is happening now we must thoroughly and truly understand the reasons for this Brexit in the first place. By looking at the United Kingdom s economy after the referendum, it seems that nothing has drastically changed. According to the Financial Times the Britain s GDP economic growth is slow compared to previous years; In the second quarter of 2012 their growth was at 1.1% which was the highest they ve had since 2005 where it was a 1.3% growth. The Britain s economic growth now is .5%; but why is that? How could they have gone from a 1.3% growth to .5% in four years? Since then the Britain s has been fighting to keep their GDP growth rate high ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. China Vs Jap More Than A Century Of Conflict China vs. Japan: More than a century of conflict Enchantria Fleming Excelsior College For more than a century, China and Japan have had conflict after conflict, from the first Sino Japanese war between the Qing Empire and the Empire of Japan then the second Sino Japanese war nearly 50 years later. The conflict between these two countries stems from fights over territory to constant scrutinization between the two because of cultural differences and what I believe has begun to exhibit signs of cultural incompetence. The First Sino Japanese war allowed Japan to emerge as a major world power while revealing the weakness of the Chinese empire. Both China and Japan wanted to rule supreme over Korea. Korea was already one of China s most significant clients. Japan started to notice Korea for its geographic positioning and its natural resources (coal and iron). After Japan implemented Western technology, Korea was forced to expose itself to trade with Japan and proclaim independence from China. Japanese reformers attempted to overthrow the Korean government in 1884. Chinese troops rescued the king killing several Japanese guards in the process. War was evaded between the two countries by signing of the Li Ito convention, both countries had to withdraw troops from Korea. In 1894, Kim Ok kyun, a pro Japanese Korean leader of the 1884 rebellion, was invited to Shanghai and assassinated. His body was then placed aboard a Chinese warship and directed back to Korea, where it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. The Objectives Of Senior Management This is a type of risk that the CRO must assess within the goals of business continuity. The objective of senior management is to be continuing operations as normal and business interruption risks affect the ability of the organization to continue operations normally. The CRO should identify the activities or accidents that would possibly interrupt business, determine the resources available internally to deal with the loss, and ensure that any resources identified would be available to assist with this unlikely event (Elliot, 2012). Securing this type of insurance seeks to transfer the risk of business interruption by providing some mechanism for compensation to the bank and to its employees should a loss occur. Enterprise Risk Management Using Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) techniques to assess risks for the risk management program involves managing risks together as an overall risk program. It differs from traditional risk management that looks at risks individually and manages each risk separately. By integrating the traditional risks that are insurable risks into an ERM program, aids the organization in implementing a strategic risk management program that encompasses the hazard risks along with financial risks, operational risks, and strategic risks into a comprehensive risk management program for the bank. Financial Risks Financial risks are important for the CRO to address through the risk management program. According to Elliott (2012), financial risks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
