Language As An Image Of Reality
Ashley Newman
Phil 422 Prof. Livingston Language as an Image of Reality
Wittgenstein s the Tractatus and Plato s Cratylus are two works that offer remarkably comparable
theories. The Tractatus uses propositions to establish a theory regarding language and Plato uses
names in the dialogue Cratylus to develop a similar theory. Using propositions and names,
respectively, the two philosophers develop arguments showing that there is an extreme parallel
between language and pictures. After Plato discloses the origination of names and Wittgenstein looks
at the composition of propositions, the two philosophers are able to assess the relation between names,
propositions and reality. The relation of names and propositions to reality leads ... Show more content

He determines that names are composed of smaller parts, letters and vowels, which correspond to the
elements that compose the thing it is naming. Socrates begins by focusing on first names. First names
are determined to be the names from which all other names are composed. If all other names come
from these first names though, how then are first names decided? This brings Socrates to acknowledge
the importance of breaking down these first names into their elemental forms of letters and syllables.
Because there are no names before first names that offer a way to name first names, he decides each
letter and syllable of a first name must correspond to an element of which it is composed. For example
h might correspond to being made of flesh.
He relates this concept of a name being composed of smaller things making up a whole to the art of
painting when he says, It s just the same as it is with painters. This is a parallel that is easy to

Multicultural Identity
Jaime is an 18 year old Mexican American who lives with his mother and sister and has a baby with
his current fiancée. He also attends a large urban high school. Within high school, Jaime encounters
the challenges of being an immigrant and having a bicultural identity, develops resilience, understands
the influences of his mother s parenting style, and further develops his identity. He is nearing the end
of his adolescence and beginning to show traits of an emerging adult. Jaime possesses a bicultural
identity as he maintains his original Mexican identity while still being involved in American society.
He does not have to choose on over the other but this is followed by some tension between these
identities. Jaime states that in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jaime responds to stressors with optimism, feeling that he can respond effectively. For instance,
although he has missed classes because of family concerns, he delights in being a father because to
him, having a baby is a good thing you know. A baby brings a lot of warmth into a family and gets
them closer. (Lodico Voegtle, 2005, p. 141). Because of Jaime s positive outlook he has developed
grit. He is intelligent and incorporates both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. His intrinsic motivation
is apparent through his enjoyment in all of the activities he is apart of along with the satisfaction of
being successful. Moreover, he displays his extrinsic motivation by his desires to support his family
and make them proud. Resilient people can be identified as those who are socially pleasant, outgoing,
and have good communication skills. (Feldman, 2017). Jaime has very advanced social skills as made
evident by taking the time to greet many of his friends as he walks through the hallway, approaching
them with cheer. Even though he has moved a couple of times throughout his childhood, it has had no
impact on his ability to make and nurture friendships. Although there are a lot of pressure with caring
for son, working and studying, Jaime

Difficulties Of Defining Terrorism Has Changed Our Lives
Difficulties of Defining Terrorism
Christine King

Dr. Alanna Smith

Abstract
Terrorism has been around for hundreds of years and through the years the definition of terrorism has
changed. While the United States knew of terrorism it wasn t a main stream issue for Americans, these
types of activities happened in other countries, not ours. Unfortunately that is not true, which we
found that terrorism can and did reach our shores and change our lives, this unfortunate realization
took place on September 11, 2001. Of course this was not the first terrorist activity that occurred on
American soil, it is just the one that slapped American s in the face telling us that American was not
untouchable , we are just as vulnerable as other countries. Defining terrorism has been an issue for
many years, the different branches of the federal government cannot even agree on a definition of
what terrorism is let alone different countries. To back up the above I have listed some of the different
definitions from different branches of the federal government and from other countries (White, J.
2014).
The Intelligence Community is guided by the definition of terrorism contained in Title 22 of the US
Code, Section 2656f(d): (www.cia.gov) o The term terrorism means premeditated, politically
motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine
agents. o The term international terrorism means terrorism involving the

Was Haman Hanged Or Impaled In The Book Of Esther Analysis
Was Haman Hanged or Impaled in the Book of Esther?
As part of the battle between Mordecai (the hero) and Haman (the villain), Haman plans Mordecai s
death, but in the end the instrument of death is turned on Haman himself.
According to the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), Haman s wife suggested (verse 5:14) that a
gallows fifty cubits [seventy five to eighty feet] high be made ... to have Mordecai hanged on it.
The Jewish Publication Society of America Version (JPS).
translation offers instead, Let a stake be put up ... to have Mordecai impaled on it. Verse 7:10 details
the plot reversal: The King s men either hanged Haman on the gallows (NRSV) or impaled Haman on
the stake (JPS).
Which is it? Was it a gallows or stake? And was Haman hanged or impaled?
King James Version (KJV), the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) and the New American
Standard (NAS) render the beginning of the verse the same: So, they hanged Haman on the gallows
that he had prepared for Mordecai. However, consider the NIV s take on the text:
So, they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. (and to be fair, the NRSV contains a
note that it should be rendered on a tree by impalement )
Clearly, hanging by the neck until dead and being shoved on a sharpened, wide perimeter stick are two
(2) separate ways of dying.
Where does the discrepancy come from?
There are two (2) questions here, as there always are with matters of translation.
1. The first is what the original Hebrew means.
2. The second is how best to say that in English.
Let s look at the Hebrew to examine the two (2) words in dispute.
Gallows (KJV)/Pole(NIV)
1. The Hebrew word is ets and it is the most often translated in the Bible as tree, piece of wood, or
pole.
2. The only examples of the word being translated as gallows appear in The Book of Esther
Hanged (KJV)/Impaled(NIV)
1. The Hebrew word talah is used here and is the source of complexity in interpreting the image of
death.
2. The word translates most often in the Bible to mean suspend or hang, and there are numerous
examples of people hung on ets throughout the OT: Genesis 40:19, Deuteronomy 21:22, Joshua 8:29
and 10:20, 1 Samuel 31:10, and 2 Samuel

Lee Harvey Oswald came into the world on October 39th, 1939. His parents were Robert Edward Lee
Oswald, Sr and Marguerite Frances Claverie. Robert Oswald was dead of a heart attack three months
before Lee Harvey Oswald was born. Although Lee Harvey Oswald never met his dad, he was always
reminded of him through pictures around the house. Robert Oswald was a far cousin of Confederate
general Robert E. Lee from the American Civil Wars . (Wikipedia said that) In 1944, Marguerite
Frances Claverie moved the family from New Orleans to Dallas, Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald went into

and was put on the reserves list. Just before he turned 20, in 1959 he traveled to the Soviet Union. He
saved up $1500 of his Marine Salary so he could go to the Soviet Union. In March 1961, Oswald met
Marina Prusakova, a 19 year old pharmacology student. They both liked each other so they started to
date each other. In less than a year they were married and had one kid. They settled in Fort Worth,
Dallas. In July 1962, Oswald was hired by the Leslie Welding Company in Dallas. He did not like the
work and quit after some time. On October 12, 1962 he started working for the graphic arts firm of
Jaggars Chiles Stovall as a photoprint trainee. He liked this job a lot more than he like the welding job.
Oswald was fired about 5 and a half months later, on the first week of April 1963. In March 1963,
Oswald used the name A. Hidell to make a mail purchase of a used Carcano rifle for $30.00. He also
bought a .38 Smith Wesson revolver by the mail. On April 10, 1963, Oswald attempted to kill retired
Edwin Walker, a Major U.S. General that was anti communist. He fired the Carcano rifle at Walker
through a window from less than 30 meters away as Walker sat at a desk in his Dallas home. The
bullet struck the window frame and Walker s only injuries were bullet fragments to the forearm.

Strong Feelings in Macbeth and the Old Nurse s Story Essay
By examining The Old Nurse s Story and Macbeth , in detail, compare and contrast how Elizabeth
Gaskell and Shakespeare explore strong feelings in these two texts.
Macbeth was most likely written before the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 during the Jacobean era and it is
thought that Shakespeare wrote the play in order to compliment the current King, James I.
Shakespeare adapted his source material from Holinshed s Chronicles ; and one way he did this was
by giving the audience full access to Macbeth s tortured mind, so they could witness Macbeth s most
powerful emotions. The play also reflects a widespread fascination with witchcraft and Shakespeare
exploits this interest for dramatic effect. In 1597, James I published his own book ... Show more

Whilst Hester is exploring the mystifying house, she discovers a portrait of the young Miss. Grace
(later Miss. Furnivall). She was a beauty with a proud, set look, and such scorn looking out of her
handsome eyes as well as eyebrows that were just a little raised and a curled lip. Miss. Grace is
wearing posh clothes in the portrait, which shows that she is upper class, but even this artificial beauty
doesn t mask her malevolence. This shows that appearances are deceptive, but a person s true colours
are always revealed, no matter how hard they try to hide them.
The impression that we are given in the opening scene of Macbeth is that the actions of only a few
people will deal with the fate of the whole kingdom. This is hinted at when the witches speak of a
battle being lost and won , as the word battle usually refers to a conflict on a large scale, which
suggests that numerous people in the kingdom could be affected. This battle could tie in to the strong
feelings of guilt, ambition and determination on many levels. The battle could be a spiritual one
between the good (the Thanes) and the evil (the supernatural), or a mental battle in Macbeth s
conscience; all of which could cause the characters to explore their innermost thoughts. Both of these
openings anticipate the release of strong emotions from the protagonists, which are caused by

Sustainable Fashion: A Growing Need For Eco Friendly Clothing
Abstract
Every consumer is probably aware that the products they purchase have some kind of effect on the
environment. However, the average person does not know that the textile and clothing manufacturing
industry has one of the greatest. Sustainable fashion is part of a growing design philosophy which
some brands and designers are taking into consideration. The goal of this trend is to create textiles and
garments in terms of an environmental responsibility. There are many ways that this can be achieved,
but there are many key factors that every consumer should be aware of.

As of right now only a small percentage of wool is produced organically, but the interest is strongly
growing. Another great concern of wool manufacturing is the intensive use of water, energy and
chemicals used to clean the greasy wool fiber. Wool required hot water to process and the cleaning
produces a grease sludge that contains a high pollution index. An organic solvent would be a more
appropriate approach in cleaning raw wool because it can be reclaimed and recycled (Kadolph, 2010).
Artificial, manmade fibers also take on toll on the environment. Synthetics like nylon and polyester
are produced from petrochemicals and are non biodegradable. Petroleum based products are very
detrimental to the environment. The production of nylon creates nitrous oxide which is a greenhouse
gas that is 310 times more potent then carbon dioxide (Challa, 2012). The production of these
synthetics also uses vast amounts of water and energy. Rayon is an artificial fiber made from wood
pulp, which may seem more environmentally friendly, but still has negative effect on the environment.
Even though rayon is created from a natural substance, it is still treated with harmful chemicals such
as caustic soda and sulfuric acid. The impact of textiles on the environment does not stop after
production. Two thirds of a garments carbon footprint occurs after it is purchased (Challa, 2012). The
water and energy used to clean and dry clothing has a

Economic Integration Is Defined As An Economic Adjustment
Economic integration is defined as an economic disposition between different divisions that are
associated together through the synchronisation of fiscal and monetary policies as well as the
reduction or elimination of barriers to entry for trading. The sole aims of economic integration are to
succour both consumers and producers, by minimising costs, and also to maximise trade between the
countries which are involved.
In total, there are 8 stages in the economic integration operation, starting from a highly loose alliance
of countries in a preferential trade area, to a completely economically integrated coalition, whereby all
the economies of the member countries in the union are thoroughly integrated. The first stage is when

The EU is also a politico economic union comprising of 28 different countries as of 2013 that are
located primarily in Europe.
The United Kingdom has long been a part of European Union, since 1973, and the European Union
membership has always had a strong influence on the United Kingdom s economy in numerous ways.
The effects which are most important emerges through a programme of economic integration in which
EU s four freedoms the freedom of movement of goods, services, capital and people are reassured,
known as the Single Market. The impact of EU s membership to the UK is not only felt in the
economic sector, but can also be felt in the areas of its policies too.
First and foremost, the most fundamental economic benefit that the United Kingdom experiences
would be the positive effect of free movement of goods and services across and between European
countries. The free movement of their goods and services should be able to prompt and increase its
trade, with the barriers of entry being stripped away. Theoretically, all Member States in the European
Union are able to benefit from this because it grants them the opportunity to specialise in those goods
and services that they are proportionately more coherent at producing.
Furthermore, domestic producers

Chaucer s Candide And Shakespeare s Macbeth
Many famous literary works were written as a way to give commentary on the society in which the
author lived such as Voltaire s Candide and Shakespeare s Macbeth. Geoffrey Chaucer, famous for his
The Canterbury Tales, and considered instrumental in the creation of English literature, is not as well
known for social commentary in his writing. However, The Canterbury Tales do indeed possess
insight and analysis of society, namely the role of the authority figures in the Church. Chaucer was
critical of the abuses and misuses he saw in the authority within the Church. He demonstrated his
awareness of and concern over the problematic behaviors of those in authority in the Church through
his writings seen in The Canterbury Tales. Through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If one considers that Chaucer was also able to survive two regime changes, one would realize the
immense diplomatic skill that Chaucer must have possessed. Typically, regime changes lead to
massive upheaval in all positions of administration. Yet, Chaucer maintained his position as a royal
diplomat regardless of the ruler. (Ackroyd 68). This alone gives testament to his indispensable worth
to the British kingdom, which was, at that time in history, an institution second only to the Catholic
Church. Thus, because of the power held by the Catholic Church, Chaucer would have likely had
many encounters with the Church in its people and leaders. An apt symbol for the Catholic culture of
fourteenth century London might be found in the fact that there were ninety nine churches, and ninety
five inns, within the walls (Ackroyd 8). Common street talk included such passing phrases like, God
save you, God give you grace, and God s speed (Ackroyd 7). The Church s reach stretched into the
day to day life of all around Europe, regardless of class. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that
Chaucer s poetry would focus so much on religion and the practices of religion. And, because Chaucer
participated devoutly in the religious practices, it makes sense that he would have felt an urgent desire
to effect change in the faulty and corrupt practices of Church officials. Thus, Chaucer s The
Canterbury Tales serve as a first hand analysis of the

The Energy Source Of Energy
In an era where fossil fuels are the dominant source of energy, environmentalists and scientists are
looking for alternative energy sources in the fear that fossil fuels will sooner or later become
consumed by our energy needs. In the hunt to find a strong alternative energy source, scientists have
reverted back to an old formula E=MC2. The indicated formula was first thought up by Albert
Einstein to describe a part of general relativity in the paper Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon
Its Energy Content? Furthermore, in his publication Albert Einstein explains that mass and kinetic
energy are proportionally equal. Meaning you can transfer energy into mass and vice versa. In
addition if you are able to transfer mass into energy that mass will be multiplied by the speed of light
(C) squared, meaning that a little mass can turn into a lot of energy. Moreover, Einstein s reasoning for
using the speed of light is because atoms when separated travel the speed of light thus carrying a lot of
energy. At the time Einstein was working on trying to find ways to separate and or fuse atoms in order
to gain energy and put his formula to use. However, today we have found two different ways of doing
so in what we call nuclear fusion and nuclear fission.
Nuclear fusion has been around since the big bang, as it is the process that powers stars just like ours
and is how our universe continues to grow. Moreover, nuclear fusion occurs when two or more atoms
fuse together at very high

Postmodern Religion
Problem Statements:
1) The local church must learn to focus its energy/efforts in the community where is resides. How can
we learn to serve and love our neighbors when we do not even know our literal neighbors next door?
As Nehemiah told the people in Jerusalem who were rebuilding the walls of the city, you must begin
where you are at where you live.
2) We live in a time of great ecological and environmental crisis in which the local church must
provide a theological and tangible response. Global warming is not only a threat to animals and land,
but to humans as well (all creation). Additionally, this is not only an environmental issue, but also an
issue of social justice (race, poverty, etc.).
3) The local church must proclaim a robust understanding ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, this is impossible. The good news that God is reconciling all creation through Christ
presses upon every aspect of our lives (past, present, future). If we are to be true to the gospel
message, we can no longer simply relegate it to a way to get to heaven when we die (or avoid hell) or
simply substitute it for a liberal, progressive agenda. In our postmodern era people are wondering
whether the gospel message is true, and to discern whether it is true, they look to the Christians to see
whether or not the truth of the gospel has any tangible effects on the way we live in and see the world.
Unfortunately, far too often, we have failed to incarnate the gospel message and re present the body of
Christ to the world. My hope, however, is to offer one tangible way in which we live out the gospel.
Not only are we creating a space to share the good news of God s love for all creation (and God s
redemptive work in the world), but we are actively engaging with God in the work of new creation by
living out our faith. Our message to our neighbors is simple: We believe God loves you and not only
you, but all creation. And we do too. We want to join with God in celebrating, cherishing and
transforming the world. Green Evangelism is a way of spreading the good news and telling our
neighbors that they are loved and cherished by God and their local church. It s a way of serving them
and telling them that the church cares about the earth too. Even if they are not interested in saving the
earth or going green, the gift of the LED lightbulbs is a way of helping them save money ($150/year
savings would be a huge help to our low middle class neighborhood) which is a whole lot better than a
pen or a mug with Piney Mountain UMC on it. Our hope is to embody our faith to our neighbors and

A Brief History of Library Automation
An automated library is one where a computer system is used to
manage one or several of the library s key functions such as
acquisitions, serials control, cataloging, circulation and the public
access catalog. When exploring the history of library automation, it
is possible to return to past centuries when visionaries well before
the computer age created devices to assist with their book lending
systems. Even as far back as 1588, the invention of the French Book
Wheel allowed scholars to rotate between books by stepping on a pedal
that turned a book table. Another interesting example was the Book
Indicator , developed by Albert Cotgreave in 1863. It housed miniature
books to represent books in the library s collection. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

A Comparative Review of the Vascular System in Seed Plants...
A comparative review of the vascular system in seed plants and humans
In the evolutionary tree of life, all biotic organisms are believed to have derived from a common
ancestor. The organisms falling under the eukaryotic kingdom of Plantae are known to have arisen in
the same time period as those in the eukaryotic kingdom of Animalia the Paleozoic era, about 500
million years ago (MYA) (Raven et al., 2008). Despite their chronological resemblance, their
evolutionary diversity is especially great in their most advanced organisms humans and seed plants.
One key system that illustrates this diversity is the vascular system (or the cardiovascular system in
humans). The vascular system of the respective lines of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While xylem transports water and nutrients that generally originate at the roots, phloem transports
food (in the form of sugars), hormones, and mRNA which generally originate in the leaf of the plant.
Additionally, while water is moved through passive transport, food requires energy to be driven
throughout the length of the root and shoot, and is thus carried through active transport. Food transport
is said to go from a source (where it is made) to a sink (where it is needed) (Vaucher, 2003). Humans
use a more intricate network of systems to keep the internal body conditions moist and nourished. The
cardiovascular system is the primary network of tubules responsible for molecular transport. Humans
extract nutrients, vitamins, and other vital compounds from food in the gastrointestinal tract;
extraction of minerals, vitamins, blood, and vital compounds from liquids is done primarily in the
glomerulus of the kidney (Raven et al., 2008). Once the necessary molecules are in the blood stream,
the cardiovascular system delivers it to the desired tissue through diffusion. The cardiovascular system
of humans uses the heart to circulate blood throughout the body. The human heart is composed of four
chambers; the left atrium and left ventricle transport oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the
body, incoming deoxygenated blood filters from the superior and inferior vena cava to right atrium

The business would want the idea being used in the advert but the agency may diced not to use it as it

Financial Statement Analysis And Financial Statements
The ultimate goal of accounting is to provide useful information to those that need it (Siam, Rashid,
2010). Financial statements analysis is very important to various users because it helps to express the
overall financial health of the organization (Gibson, 2013). Managers use the financial statements to
measure the profitability of a company, manage day to day activities and make important decisions
about pricing, production that will benefit the organization (Gibson, 2013). Financial statements are
also used to form contracts between organizations. Using the debt to equity ratio, managers are able to
determine how much capital should be raised for investment. Consumers on the other hand need the
financial statements to tell them the ability of the company to meet their needs. This study presents a
comprehensive assessment of the balance sheet components, income statement components and the
fair value accounting system.
Balance Sheet
Balance sheets provides the snapshot of the overall financial position of an organization at a specific
time especially the end of an accounting period (Haydon, Wicks, 1966). It shows the assets owned,
liabilities and the shareholder s equity. The balance sheet details can vary greatly based on the
business size and complexity, however in general the balance sheet adheres to the following principle:
The left side of the balance sheet must always equal to the right side (Orens, Lybaert, 2010).
ASSETS = LIABILITIES SHAREHOLDER S EQUITY

Research On The Topic Of Gender
The purpose of this paper is to construct an essay demonstrating my ability to produce a Research
Project. I chose to do my research on the topic of gender, because it is something that I find
interesting. In this paper, I will identify three sources that I have chosen based on the topic of gender,
and then I will summarize the main points of the sources. From there, I will evaluate my sources to
determine whether or not they are value free, and if they use empirical evidence. I will also define,
discuss, and apply specific sociological terms such as social roles, socialization, and norms from
within the context of gender. As I mentioned above, the topic I chose to research is gender. Often
times people use the terms sex and gender interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Sex is
biological; either you are a male or a female. It is based on things such as DNA, hormones, genitalia,
etc. The term sex is very rigid, whereas the term gender is much more fluid. It could take into account
biological factors, but it doesn t always. Gender refers to the physical, behavioral, and personality
traits that a group or culture consider to be normal, natural, right and good for its male and female
members (Ferris, The Real World: An Introduction to Sociology, 2014). Gender determines how
society influences our understanding and perception of differences between being masculine or
feminine. Gender is something that is socially constructed and is learned as we grow. The

In this paper, we focus the Flow Control for traceback that will minimize the amount of packets
required for build up the attack path. Flow control based mechanism merged with Uniform
Probabilistic Packet Marking (UPPM), the stream of packets can be controlled that suggests the
amount of packets checked by UPPM will get reduce there by decreasing the convergence time. Then
again, this strategy should bring about full traceback on an attacker. Keywords:

Introduction
IP traceback suggests the capacity of perceiving the genuine wellspring of any packet sent over the
Internet. By virtue of the shortcoming of the first blueprint of the Internet, we will be not able to find
the genuine developers at present. To be completely frank, IP traceback arrangements are seen as
productive if they can perceive the zombies from which the DDoS attack packets entered the Internet.
Various techniques to tracebak the start of the attack including link testing, controlled flooding, ICMP
traceback and different packet marking methodologies. Packet marking techniques are used as a piece
of this paper. Packet marking means

Jonathan Hunt s Essay Reading And Writing About A Bicycle
In the essay Reading and Writing about a Bicycle, Jonathan Hunt explains the bicycle subculture,
known as the fixie . Hunt gives the details about this sub culture of bicycle enthusiast, including the
visual appearance of both the riders and the bikes. The riders take on the appearance of a professional
road racer, along with that of skinny and scruffy kids. While the bicycles themselves can be brightly
colored and adorned with corporate names and logos, or old, scratched and chipped. While the
appearance of these fixies vary drastically, they all maintain two values that are constant. Hunt, points
to the first as being minimalistic, and the second being the lack of safety features, such as brakes.

Life is all about making decisions. Every day we are faced with situations that lead us to making

The Book of Job
Introduction
The book of Job is a book that tells a story about a reach man who lived in Uz. The book is filled with
the suffering of Job. Job was a righteous man who feared God but lost everything he has got including
his health. And he suffered financially, relationship wise and also with different kinds of diseases. The
author of the book then tried to show in a poetic dialogue the reaction of job himself and the reaction
of his friends to the disaster. And in the last chapters we God communicate with Job.
Job is the first of the poetic books in the Hebrew Bible. Greater part of the book is filled with poetic
style hence; the book of job is categorized under poetry or wisdom Literature along with the other four
books known as wisdom Literature (Psalms, the Song of Solomon, Ecclesiastes, and Proverbs).
The author of the book is not known for sure until today but most argue that the author of the book is
not Job rather, some have suggested that the writer could be Moses, Solomon, or Elihu.
There are different views regarding the real existence of Job. Some claim that Job is only a parable not
a real person but there others who believe Job existed and I also believe that Job really existed.
Because one; the book presents it as a real historical person and mentioned different things like place
where he lived, the number of his children etc. Two: job in mention in both James and Ezekiel, in the

The book states that in China, where the Hmong are from, they were seen as barbarians, because they
refused to assimilate to the Chinese culture. The Hmong have kept their cultural practices and beliefs
no matter the circumstances and who is against them. This statement shows the powerful fighting
spirit of the Hmong people who refused to surrender even if the odds were against them. It is an
admirable trait that they have been able to keep their culture for thousands of years because they don t
believe that other cultures are superior to theirs. At the age of three months, Lia had her first epilepsy
attack. The condition was not hereditary since none of the other children of the Lees had epilepsy. Lias
Dad, Nao Kao, believed that the reason why she got the first attack of epilepsy was due to Lias older
sister slamming the door of the bedroom, which Lia was asleep in, with great force. As three month
old Lia jumped up, Nao Kao believes that her spirit was frightened and fled her body causing her
illness to emerge. Lia was take to the Merced Community Medical Center, a hospital that had no

Argumentative Essay On Corn Ethanol
In 2005, federal mandates were placed to encourage the use of biofuel (Bullis). Biofuels can come
from many different sources, like sugar for example (Tyner et al. i), but the most prominent and most
controversial biofuel is corn ethanol. In 2007, President Bush (Bullis) expanded the quotas on ethanol
with the Energy Independency and Security Act (Tyner et al. i). Although there are other biofuels,
legislature has established ethanol as an additive to traditional petroleum based automobile fuels. Corn
ethanol is controversial because many believe that it is not more efficient than fossil fuels and raises
the price of food since livestock or humans could eat it.
Professor Don Hofstrand at Iowa State University says ...a 100 million gallon ethanol biorefinery will
reduce [greenhouse gas] emissions by approximately 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide
equivalents per year. Although ethanol requires greenhouse gases to be emitted for production, ethanol
fuel s net emissions are fifty four percent less than gasoline. Half of the emissions related to producing
ethanol are related to growing crops, while the other half is contributed to refining the fuel
(Hofstrand). The burning and production of ethanol combined has a smaller carbon footprint than
petroleum fuels. This makes it a good fuel substitution while even greener forms of energy are
developed to power automobiles and machinery. Reduced greenhouse gases can help slow climate
change.

This film by virtue of its independence has shied away from the usual hype associated with American
movies. The result is an original screenplay by Billy Bob Thornton that is transformed into a
mesmerising tale of the south. Thornton cast actors with ability rather than their image or Hollywood
status . Sling Blade challenges us to re evaluate our principles and our definitions of right, wrong and
of justice.

Karl begins to tell his story under the soft light of the lamp. His story is accompanied by a strong and
slow heartbeat. As the story is reaching its horrific climax, the heartbeat quickens, and with the last
word of the story, the heartbeat now louder and quicker than ever, stops. The lighting creates a chilling
moment in the movie. The constant use of lighting is most definitely contemporary noir.
Upon Karl s release the music changes to a more cheerful harmonica and synthesizer representing his
contentment with his new found freedom. Karl heads back to where he was raised in a small country

Ginga Eiyuu (Legend Of The Galactic Heroes
Crafting a masterful anime is similar to cultivating a delicate flower, it requires a willingness to accept
circumstances the way they are, and not the way we wish them to be. Lithops, a flower with a low
dependence on water, can have their skins burst if they are oversaturated with excess liquids. In the
same breath, an anime that strives for over the top action sequences (e.g. run of the mill Shounen
anime) but neglects the political, economic, and social struggles that accompany those events, falsely
establishes a dichotomous situation that rarely, if ever, exists. The original Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu
(Legend of the Galactic Heroes) understood these concepts extremely well, taking every opportunity it
could to flesh out characters, explore pertinent historical events, and question the role(s) of
government and its people. If it were required to sum up the original series in one word, it would be:
methodical. Nothing ever felt rushed, hurried, or crammed down our throats. Everything blossomed
from the seeds of past events. And while the outcomes may, or may not, have been what we had

Why Is It Important To Build Roman Buildings
Roman buildings were based on the Greeks architectural orders, the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian. In
additional to those they added one of their own, the Composite, which practically was a combination
of the Ionic and the Corinthian order. Although Romans didn t invent the wheel; they invented
something almost equally important, the concrete. The new material spread so fast and took the
leading position in the way buildings were constructed.
The innovation of concrete really transformed the appearance of their buildings. Its basic component
the pozzolana, a volcanic element was in abundance around Rome and not only made concrete
stronger than marble it could be easily decorated.(The Romans,n.d,par.2) Along with concrete they
used bricks to make buildings more solid and stones in various shapes to give an aesthetic view to the
buildings. But ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

ROMAN ARCHITECTURE 3
Almost every Roman building included arches, but those can be seen in other places as well, at the
Colosseum, in aqueducts, at temples etc. They constructed circular temples as the Pantheon, or the
famous baths of Caraccala.
Triumph arches that had only a single or a double entrance had no other function than to celebrate
significant events like a military victory. (Cartwright, 2013)
Since its introduction, the arch applied to almost all future empires and all civilizations. The Roman
architecture influenced many nations and many monuments were designed in the same way as the
ones of the Roman period. Concrete and arch changed the way of construction and had an impact on
architecture in all over the world. That was the Roman legacy and it is no surprise that Roman
buildings are still standing in our time and treated with

Analysis Of The Book Eight Hearts Essay
Eight Hearts, All In a Row
The bus drops Randy off next to an ice cream stand he used to buy neapolitan cones from in the
summer. He s surprised it still exists, the stand now covered in a tarp, looking to survive the New York
winter. 1818 Cheshire Street stands less than a block away, and he walks slowly, clutching his brown
paper bag, trying to avoid slipping on the ice. When he was younger, a winter night meant sledding
with the other kids in the neighborhood while lights illuminated up the inside of brightly painted
houses. He, a stranger now, tiptoes through dead silence and boarded up windows, trying to see from
the glow of flickering streetlamps. No colorful bulbs twinkled from roofs, no wreaths guarded
welcoming doors, and no hot chocolate wafted through window cracks. Now, the memory of
gingerbread men leaves an acidic taste in his mouth. His childhood home is one of the few in the
neighborhood that hadn t been abandoned after the incident. When families fled, fluidly like a stream
of grief and fear, his father had stood his ground at the house he bought for his family years ago.
Almost nobody wanted to move into abandoned perfectly painted houses, polished with vibrant
hydrangea bushes and stained with ink black tragedy. The property value had plunged like a bird shot
from the sky, and the area was now a ghost town. As Randy makes his way down the sidewalk, 1818
Cheshire Street looms in front of him. This house where he went from youngest child to middle

The Cultural And Social Behavior Of A Society
The cultural means relating to the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a society. Therefore, when
doing world mission we must be able to relate to the culture in which we are ministering to. We are
not to forget who we are as far as culturally, but we are to have the knowledge of that particular
culture. For example, in Chapter 3 in our textbook, it speaks of Patrick, an English slave who escaped
from Ireland and later returned as a missionary. Being that he understood the people and their
language, their issues, and their ways , served as a channel for the people to easily receive from him.
Being able to relate to a group of people, having the knowledge of that particular group, and being
able to understand the group in which you are ministering to is very essential in doing mission work.
You have to be careful how you approach people and when you do be conscious of how you engage
unbelievers. In conclusion, cultural simply refers to relations. On the other hand, this particular
question is referring to the negative fallouts (listed in the text) as results to decisions missionaries have
made overtime. Should those missionaries be representatives of all missionaries? In my opinion, the
spread of Christianity, as I refer to as the period of missionary work, has had a major, positive
influence on the world in many, many ways. Some missionaries may be looked upon as bringing about
negative change and some are looked upon as bringing about positive change. I believe it

The Importance Of Spiritual Formation And Social Action
Some respondents reported that, while they were very eager to be engaged with LMAW and that they
had a long and deep appreciation for the importance of spiritual formation and social action, they also
felt that within their usual church life these two things are so disjointed as to be almost irreconcilable.
One respondent said that a spiritual practice that fails to reflect action becomes self perception
grooming and another said prayer seems important, but also inadequate, [it is] also one of the only
things I can do to make a difference. So I keep praying about it. Just like I keep clicking on all the
online petitions I see about it but with little faith it will bring about any major change any time soon.
These, and other respondents have had a hard time engaging with their church family. Some even
went as far as to say I was discouraged by my church to participate .
I suspect, however, that the disconnect, and subsequent sense of being a lone voice, unsupported by
the wider church, added to their feelings of aloneness. No doubt the protracted nature of Australia s
mistreatment of asylum seekers and the lack of a general uprising of Christian community has also
contributed to the sense of hopelessness. I do not believe that these feelings are caused exclusively by
their LMAW involvement but their involvement with a group (see below) of like minded individuals
may well have exacerbated their general aloneness and hopelessness.

Essay on This Land Is Your Land Analysis
This Land Is Your Land
By: Woody Guthrie
There are many fold songs that go unheard. But when you go back to the roots of folk music, there is
one that most every American recognizes. This Land Is Your Land has been a staple of Americana for
nearly 75 years. The lyrics start off by giving a visual image of the vastness of America. It mentions
California and the New York Island which focuses on the widest breadth of the country. Then it
mentions the Redwood Forest (Which is also in California), and the Gulf Stream waters which are two
easily recognizable features that are unique to America. While reminding the listener in the first line
that this land is both theirs and his, and in the last line of the chorus that the land was not ... Show

The other side of that sign was made for everyone, he says. So he is saying that the other side of that
sign is equally everyones and nobody has a right to keep certain people out. He goes on to say in the
next verse that nobody that is living can ever stop him as he is walking down the freedom highway.
Nobody living can ever make him turn back, because this land was made for everyone. He is just
saying that he will not give up just because it is hard. When the land was MADE for everyone, he is
not going to stop until he has reached it. The last verse that is kept out of the song is without a doubt
the very best one. It says that he has seen his people in the squares of the city and in the shadow of a

after everything that he had seen, was this land really made for everyone? After seeing all this
beautiful country, he thought that there was no reason that anyone couldn t be where they wanted to be
and do what they wanted to do. It seemed to him that the land was made for everyone. But then he

Julius Caesar Propaganda
I have a dream! Four score and seven years ago. We shall never surrender! These have been the most
famous lines ever uttered by a person in history. No one can doubt that. In a time of turmoil, hatred,
fear, and hope, these speakers have come forth to create produce reverence in their foes. The Tragedy
of Julius Caesar, written by William Shakespeare, is a fantastic example of the power of language and
speech in front of the citizens who believe and trust their leaders. Language is power, and the ability to
use language and speech is the power needed to rule an empire. Although sometimes used for hate,

Shakespeare thought about the important use of propaganda as a political weapon for many characters,
most importantly Antony and Murellus. As Caesar triumphs home from his defeat over Pompey, the
audience can see Murellus clearly upset, stating, Wherefore rejoice? What conquest brings he home? |
What tributaries follow him to Rome | To grace in captive bonds his chariot wheels? | You blocks, you
stones, you worse than senseless things! (I.i.32 35) The use of propaganda here is quite obvious,
Murellus is upset that Caesar, in his mind, was unjust in taking the throne and slandering him to the
people. He also slanders the people of Rome, calling them worse than senseless beings to provoke
either strong emotion or fear within them. Power comes from language and speech here by evoking
emotions inside and making your opponents vulnerable and weak. That s what propaganda has always
been used for. Shakespeare s deeper meaning in Julius Caesar is that everyone is weak and vulnerable,
no matter who or what you are. Everyone can have their emotions taken out by others, and speech is
the tool and weapon to make opponents weak. Antony resembles this idea of a powerful figure using
propaganda and slander as his weapons further in the play when at Caesar s funeral. In front of the
many plebeians at Antony s funeral, who were in favor of Brutus at the time, Antony announced, So
are they all, all honorable men | Come I to speak in Caesar s funeral. | He was my friend, faithful and
just to me. | But Brutus says he was ambitious | And Brutus is an honorable man. (III.ii.82 86) Antony
is showing the people of Rome how Brutus was an honorable man, although he was ambitious to get
the throne. A sob story is what Antony is producing, showing the people he loved Caesar, but Brutus
must be right for killing him, he is honorable.

but do not know the basics on how to protect their devices from power surges, power outages and
other electrical variations. In the following paragraphs I will give you tips and information on how to
protect your computers and devices from power outages. This information will be helpful for people
who are on budgets but still want something that will actually work and others who are not on budget
and want top quality ways to protect their devices from power outages and other electronic devices.
One of the ways that you could protect your computer and other devices is to purchase a surge
protector. A surge protector s is an electrical device designed to protect a computer against the harmful
effects of power surges and spikes and sudden outages, they can contain up to 120 volts or more and
they are also inexpensive. They run around to be about twenty to forty dollars depending on which
brand you buy. The most recommended brand that will last long but is really good for its price is

How Do Tattoos Affect Society
Tattoos in Society
Even though tattoos are sometimes viewed as unprofessional and offensive, tattoos are just a form of
art because tattoos should not hinder someone from anything in life and people with tattoos are just as
human as everyone else.Tattoos have been around for a long time and have always been a subject that
causes conflicts and contradictions, both negatively and positively. Some companies do not allow their
employees to have visible tattoos, some do. There are jobs out there that are strict with the dress code
and grooming conduct.
Where I work, one of the dress code restrictions are that if you do have visible tattoos or body art, they
are to be covered by either band aid or sleeves, if anyone has a tattoo or ... Show more content on

This could be a reasonable reason for having found more mummies that were women. The tools used
back in ancient times were described to be a sharp point set in a wooden handle, flattened needles that
when tied together would provide repeated patterns of multiple dots. Now the tools have evolved but
are still the same concept a needle that pierces the skin repeatedly creating the same effect on the skin.
It was a painful process back then and it has not changed. You get severe burning when getting the
tattoo and sometimes the person cannot take the pain and they have to stop the process, so they are left
with a tattoo that is halve way and the they have to go through the removal process if they wish to
remove it. Although the tools are more advanced the pain you get when getting a tattoo is still the
same.
The most used color in the Egyptian culture since ancient times has been black and in other cultures it
has been the brighter colors that were most common. Now all of the colors are as equally popular.
There are some that are more popular than others like Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, and White these
colors are usually used as tint. There are different types of pigments that are used now days, there are
organic based, mineral based, and plastic based, and the plastic based pigments are the one s used for
brighter colors. The ink used is usually FDA approved but there are still places that use the illegal ink,
some of the ink that people use is not for the skin and

Review Of Mid Century Movie Craze Essay
Amanda Falwell Journal Week 1 Mid Century Movie Craze Panoramas created the desire to show
overviews of cities and landscapes and prompted artists to construct more desirable creations. There
were many ways to create a panorama such as using glass plates, prints, swing lens cameras, painting,
and photographs. These machines generally were hand cranked to create motion which tricked the eye
to see a moving object. This article introduced me to John Banvard who was a man that combined
sketches and canvas into large scale moving panoramas. He worked as a scene painter on the
Chapman family s Floating Theater and created dioramic paintings on the boat. Banvard traveled
through Europe to display his innovative exhibits. While on his travel he gave Queen Victoria a
private presentation. We are Here and Not Here This reading establishes the relationship to cinema
and magic or Cinemagic . During the nineteenth century popular entertainment merged science and
technology into stage performances in an effort to fool the eye. The goal was to trick someones vision
with elaborate visual presentations. This imagistic turn demonstrated disappearances and
transformations through the use of mirrors and reflections. In this era performers had control of the
audiences view, they used the illusions to create optical images for entertainment. This chapter
explained pre cinema magic illusions, technological innovations, and cultural optics. I learned that
entertainment magic plays with

  • 2. Language As An Image Of Reality Ashley Newman Phil 422 Prof. Livingston Language as an Image of Reality Wittgenstein s the Tractatus and Plato s Cratylus are two works that offer remarkably comparable theories. The Tractatus uses propositions to establish a theory regarding language and Plato uses names in the dialogue Cratylus to develop a similar theory. Using propositions and names, respectively, the two philosophers develop arguments showing that there is an extreme parallel between language and pictures. After Plato discloses the origination of names and Wittgenstein looks at the composition of propositions, the two philosophers are able to assess the relation between names, propositions and reality. The relation of names and propositions to reality leads ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He determines that names are composed of smaller parts, letters and vowels, which correspond to the elements that compose the thing it is naming. Socrates begins by focusing on first names. First names are determined to be the names from which all other names are composed. If all other names come from these first names though, how then are first names decided? This brings Socrates to acknowledge the importance of breaking down these first names into their elemental forms of letters and syllables. Because there are no names before first names that offer a way to name first names, he decides each letter and syllable of a first name must correspond to an element of which it is composed. For example h might correspond to being made of flesh. He relates this concept of a name being composed of smaller things making up a whole to the art of painting when he says, It s just the same as it is with painters. • 3. Multicultural Identity Jaime is an 18 year old Mexican American who lives with his mother and sister and has a baby with his current fiancée. He also attends a large urban high school. Within high school, Jaime encounters the challenges of being an immigrant and having a bicultural identity, develops resilience, understands the influences of his mother s parenting style, and further develops his identity. He is nearing the end of his adolescence and beginning to show traits of an emerging adult. Jaime possesses a bicultural identity as he maintains his original Mexican identity while still being involved in American society. He does not have to choose on over the other but this is followed by some tension between these identities. Jaime states that in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jaime responds to stressors with optimism, feeling that he can respond effectively. For instance, although he has missed classes because of family concerns, he delights in being a father because to him, having a baby is a good thing you know. A baby brings a lot of warmth into a family and gets them closer. (Lodico Voegtle, 2005, p. 141). Because of Jaime s positive outlook he has developed grit. He is intelligent and incorporates both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. His intrinsic motivation is apparent through his enjoyment in all of the activities he is apart of along with the satisfaction of being successful. Moreover, he displays his extrinsic motivation by his desires to support his family and make them proud. Resilient people can be identified as those who are socially pleasant, outgoing, and have good communication skills. (Feldman, 2017). Jaime has very advanced social skills as made evident by taking the time to greet many of his friends as he walks through the hallway, approaching them with cheer. • 4. Difficulties Of Defining Terrorism Has Changed Our Lives Difficulties of Defining Terrorism Christine King CRJ440 Dr. Alanna Smith July 12, 2015 Abstract Terrorism has been around for hundreds of years and through the years the definition of terrorism has changed. While the United States knew of terrorism it wasn t a main stream issue for Americans, these types of activities happened in other countries, not ours. Unfortunately that is not true, which we found that terrorism can and did reach our shores and change our lives, this unfortunate realization took place on September 11, 2001. Of course this was not the first terrorist activity that occurred on American soil, it is just the one that slapped American s in the face telling us that American was not untouchable , we are just as vulnerable as other countries. Defining terrorism has been an issue for many years, the different branches of the federal government cannot even agree on a definition of what terrorism is let alone different countries. To back up the above I have listed some of the different definitions from different branches of the federal government and from other countries (White, J. 2014). The Intelligence Community is guided by the definition of terrorism contained in Title 22 of the US Code, Section 2656f(d): (www.cia.gov) o The term terrorism means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents. o The term international terrorism means terrorism involving the ... As part of the battle between Mordecai (the hero) and Haman (the villain), Haman plans Mordecai s death, but in the end the instrument of death is turned on Haman himself. According to the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), Haman s wife suggested (verse 5:14) that a gallows fifty cubits [seventy five to eighty feet] high be made ... to have Mordecai hanged on it. The Jewish Publication Society of America Version (JPS). translation offers instead, Let a stake be put up ... to have Mordecai impaled on it. Verse 7:10 details the plot reversal: The King s men either hanged Haman on the gallows (NRSV) or impaled Haman on the stake (JPS). Which is it? Was it a gallows or stake? And was Haman hanged or impaled? King James Version (KJV), the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) and the New American Standard (NAS) render the beginning of the verse the same: So, they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. However, consider the NIV s take on the text: So, they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. (and to be fair, the NRSV contains a note that it should be rendered on a tree by impalement ) Clearly, hanging by the neck until dead and being shoved on a sharpened, wide perimeter stick are two (2) separate ways of dying. Where does the discrepancy come from? There are two (2) questions here, as there always are with matters of translation. 1. The first is what the original Hebrew means. 2. The second is how best to say that in English. Let s look at the Hebrew to examine the two (2) words in dispute. Gallows (KJV)/Pole(NIV) 1. The Hebrew word is ets and it is the most often translated in the Bible as tree, piece of wood, or pole. 2. The only examples of the word being translated as gallows appear in The Book of Esther Hanged (KJV)/Impaled(NIV) 1. The Hebrew word talah is used here and is the source of complexity in interpreting the image of death. 2. The word translates most often in the Bible to mean suspend or hang, and there are numerous examples of people hung on ets throughout the OT: Genesis 40:19, Deuteronomy 21:22, Joshua 8:29 and 10:20, 1 Samuel 31:10, and 2 Samuel ... • 8. Strong Feelings in Macbeth and the Old Nurse s Story Essay By examining The Old Nurse s Story and Macbeth , in detail, compare and contrast how Elizabeth Gaskell and Shakespeare explore strong feelings in these two texts. Macbeth was most likely written before the Gunpowder Plot in 1605 during the Jacobean era and it is thought that Shakespeare wrote the play in order to compliment the current King, James I. Shakespeare adapted his source material from Holinshed s Chronicles ; and one way he did this was by giving the audience full access to Macbeth s tortured mind, so they could witness Macbeth s most powerful emotions. The play also reflects a widespread fascination with witchcraft and Shakespeare exploits this interest for dramatic effect. In 1597, James I published his own book ... Grace is wearing posh clothes in the portrait, which shows that she is upper class, but even this artificial beauty doesn t mask her malevolence. This shows that appearances are deceptive, but a person s true colours are always revealed, no matter how hard they try to hide them. The impression that we are given in the opening scene of Macbeth is that the actions of only a few people will deal with the fate of the whole kingdom. This is hinted at when the witches speak of a battle being lost and won , as the word battle usually refers to a conflict on a large scale, which suggests that numerous people in the kingdom could be affected. This battle could tie in to the strong feelings of guilt, ambition and determination on many levels. The battle could be a spiritual one between the good (the Thanes) and the evil (the supernatural), or a mental battle in Macbeth s conscience; all of which could cause the characters to explore their innermost thoughts. However, the average person does not know that the textile and clothing manufacturing industry has one of the greatest. Sustainable fashion is part of a growing design philosophy which some brands and designers are taking into consideration. The goal of this trend is to create textiles and garments in terms of an environmental responsibility. As of right now only a small percentage of wool is produced organically, but the interest is strongly growing. Another great concern of wool manufacturing is the intensive use of water, energy and chemicals used to clean the greasy wool fiber. Wool required hot water to process and the cleaning produces a grease sludge that contains a high pollution index. An organic solvent would be a more appropriate approach in cleaning raw wool because it can be reclaimed and recycled (Kadolph, 2010). Artificial, manmade fibers also take on toll on the environment. Synthetics like nylon and polyester are produced from petrochemicals and are non biodegradable. Petroleum based products are very detrimental to the environment. The production of nylon creates nitrous oxide which is a greenhouse gas that is 310 times more potent then carbon dioxide (Challa, 2012). The production of these synthetics also uses vast amounts of water and energy. Rayon is an artificial fiber made from wood pulp, which may seem more environmentally friendly, but still has negative effect on the environment. Even though rayon is created from a natural substance, it is still treated with harmful chemicals such as caustic soda and sulfuric acid. The impact of textiles on the environment does not stop after production. Two thirds of a garments carbon footprint occurs after it is purchased (Challa, 2012). Economic Integration Is Defined As An Economic Adjustment Economic integration is defined as an economic disposition between different divisions that are associated together through the synchronisation of fiscal and monetary policies as well as the reduction or elimination of barriers to entry for trading. The sole aims of economic integration are to succour both consumers and producers, by minimising costs, and also to maximise trade between the countries which are involved. The effects which are most important emerges through a programme of economic integration in which EU s four freedoms the freedom of movement of goods, services, capital and people are reassured, known as the Single Market. The impact of EU s membership to the UK is not only felt in the economic sector, but can also be felt in the areas of its policies too. First and foremost, the most fundamental economic benefit that the United Kingdom experiences would be the positive effect of free movement of goods and services across and between European countries. The free movement of their goods and services should be able to prompt and increase its trade, with the barriers of entry being stripped away. Geoffrey Chaucer, famous for his The Canterbury Tales, and considered instrumental in the creation of English literature, is not as well known for social commentary in his writing. However, The Canterbury Tales do indeed possess insight and analysis of society, namely the role of the authority figures in the Church. Chaucer was critical of the abuses and misuses he saw in the authority within the Church. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If one considers that Chaucer was also able to survive two regime changes, one would realize the immense diplomatic skill that Chaucer must have possessed. Typically, regime changes lead to massive upheaval in all positions of administration. Yet, Chaucer maintained his position as a royal diplomat regardless of the ruler. (Ackroyd 68). This alone gives testament to his indispensable worth to the British kingdom, which was, at that time in history, an institution second only to the Catholic Church. Thus, because of the power held by the Catholic Church, Chaucer would have likely had many encounters with the Church in its people and leaders. An apt symbol for the Catholic culture of fourteenth century London might be found in the fact that there were ninety nine churches, and ninety five inns, within the walls (Ackroyd 8). Common street talk included such passing phrases like, God save you, God give you grace, and God s speed (Ackroyd 7). The Church s reach stretched into the day to day life of all around Europe, regardless of class. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Chaucer s poetry would focus so much on religion and the practices of religion. And, because Chaucer participated devoutly in the religious practices, it makes sense that he would have felt an urgent desire to effect change in the faulty and corrupt practices of Church officials. The Energy Source Of Energy In an era where fossil fuels are the dominant source of energy, environmentalists and scientists are looking for alternative energy sources in the fear that fossil fuels will sooner or later become consumed by our energy needs. In the hunt to find a strong alternative energy source, scientists have reverted back to an old formula E=MC2. The indicated formula was first thought up by Albert Einstein to describe a part of general relativity in the paper Does the Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content? Furthermore, in his publication Albert Einstein explains that mass and kinetic energy are proportionally equal. Meaning you can transfer energy into mass and vice versa. In addition if you are able to transfer mass into energy that mass will be multiplied by the speed of light (C) squared, meaning that a little mass can turn into a lot of energy. Moreover, Einstein s reasoning for using the speed of light is because atoms when separated travel the speed of light thus carrying a lot of energy. At the time Einstein was working on trying to find ways to separate and or fuse atoms in order to gain energy and put his formula to use. However, today we have found two different ways of doing so in what we call nuclear fusion and nuclear fission. Nuclear fusion has been around since the big bang, as it is the process that powers stars just like ours and is how our universe continues to grow. The good news that God is reconciling all creation through Christ presses upon every aspect of our lives (past, present, future). If we are to be true to the gospel message, we can no longer simply relegate it to a way to get to heaven when we die (or avoid hell) or simply substitute it for a liberal, progressive agenda. In our postmodern era people are wondering whether the gospel message is true, and to discern whether it is true, they look to the Christians to see whether or not the truth of the gospel has any tangible effects on the way we live in and see the world. Unfortunately, far too often, we have failed to incarnate the gospel message and re present the body of Christ to the world. My hope, however, is to offer one tangible way in which we live out the gospel. Not only are we creating a space to share the good news of God s love for all creation (and God s redemptive work in the world), but we are actively engaging with God in the work of new creation by living out our faith. Our message to our neighbors is simple: We believe God loves you and not only you, but all creation. And we do too. We want to join with God in celebrating, cherishing and transforming the world. It s a way of serving them and telling them that the church cares about the earth too. Additionally, while water is moved through passive transport, food requires energy to be driven throughout the length of the root and shoot, and is thus carried through active transport. Food transport is said to go from a source (where it is made) to a sink (where it is needed) (Vaucher, 2003). Humans use a more intricate network of systems to keep the internal body conditions moist and nourished. The cardiovascular system is the primary network of tubules responsible for molecular transport. Financial statements analysis is very important to various users because it helps to express the overall financial health of the organization (Gibson, 2013). Managers use the financial statements to measure the profitability of a company, manage day to day activities and make important decisions about pricing, production that will benefit the organization (Gibson, 2013). Financial statements are also used to form contracts between organizations. Using the debt to equity ratio, managers are able to determine how much capital should be raised for investment. In this paper, I will identify three sources that I have chosen based on the topic of gender, and then I will summarize the main points of the sources. From there, I will evaluate my sources to determine whether or not they are value free, and if they use empirical evidence. I will also define, discuss, and apply specific sociological terms such as social roles, socialization, and norms from within the context of gender. As I mentioned above, the topic I chose to research is gender. Often times people use the terms sex and gender interchangeably, but they are not the same thing. Sex is biological; either you are a male or a female. It is based on things such as DNA, hormones, genitalia, etc. The term sex is very rigid, whereas the term gender is much more fluid. It could take into account biological factors, but it doesn t always. Gender refers to the physical, behavioral, and personality traits that a group or culture consider to be normal, natural, right and good for its male and female members (Ferris, The Real World: An Introduction to Sociology, 2014). • 27. Argumentative Essay On Corn Ethanol In 2005, federal mandates were placed to encourage the use of biofuel (Bullis). Biofuels can come from many different sources, like sugar for example (Tyner et al. i), but the most prominent and most controversial biofuel is corn ethanol. In 2007, President Bush (Bullis) expanded the quotas on ethanol with the Energy Independency and Security Act (Tyner et al. i). Although there are other biofuels, legislature has established ethanol as an additive to traditional petroleum based automobile fuels. Corn ethanol is controversial because many believe that it is not more efficient than fossil fuels and raises the price of food since livestock or humans could eat it. Professor Don Hofstrand at Iowa State University says ...a 100 million gallon ethanol biorefinery will reduce [greenhouse gas] emissions by approximately 400,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents per year. Although ethanol requires greenhouse gases to be emitted for production, ethanol fuel s net emissions are fifty four percent less than gasoline. Half of the emissions related to producing ethanol are related to growing crops, while the other half is contributed to refining the fuel (Hofstrand). The burning and production of ethanol combined has a smaller carbon footprint than petroleum fuels. This makes it a good fuel substitution while even greener forms of energy are developed to power automobiles and machinery. Reduced greenhouse gases can help slow climate change. In the same breath, an anime that strives for over the top action sequences (e.g. run of the mill Shounen anime) but neglects the political, economic, and social struggles that accompany those events, falsely establishes a dichotomous situation that rarely, if ever, exists. The original Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes) understood these concepts extremely well, taking every opportunity it could to flesh out characters, explore pertinent historical events, and question the role(s) of government and its people. In additional to those they added one of their own, the Composite, which practically was a combination of the Ionic and the Corinthian order. Although Romans didn t invent the wheel; they invented something almost equally important, the concrete. The new material spread so fast and took the leading position in the way buildings were constructed. The innovation of concrete really transformed the appearance of their buildings. Its basic component the pozzolana, a volcanic element was in abundance around Rome and not only made concrete stronger than marble it could be easily decorated.(The Romans,n.d,par.2) Along with concrete they used bricks to make buildings more solid and stones in various shapes to give an aesthetic view to the buildings. • 32. The Cultural And Social Behavior Of A Society The cultural means relating to the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a society. Therefore, when doing world mission we must be able to relate to the culture in which we are ministering to. We are not to forget who we are as far as culturally, but we are to have the knowledge of that particular culture. For example, in Chapter 3 in our textbook, it speaks of Patrick, an English slave who escaped from Ireland and later returned as a missionary. Being that he understood the people and their language, their issues, and their ways , served as a channel for the people to easily receive from him. Being able to relate to a group of people, having the knowledge of that particular group, and being able to understand the group in which you are ministering to is very essential in doing mission work. You have to be careful how you approach people and when you do be conscious of how you engage unbelievers. In conclusion, cultural simply refers to relations. On the other hand, this particular question is referring to the negative fallouts (listed in the text) as results to decisions missionaries have made overtime. Should those missionaries be representatives of all missionaries? As Caesar triumphs home from his defeat over Pompey, the audience can see Murellus clearly upset, stating, Wherefore rejoice? What conquest brings he home? | What tributaries follow him to Rome | To grace in captive bonds his chariot wheels? | You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things! (I.i.32 35) The use of propaganda here is quite obvious, Murellus is upset that Caesar, in his mind, was unjust in taking the throne and slandering him to the people. He also slanders the people of Rome, calling them worse than senseless beings to provoke either strong emotion or fear within them. Power comes from language and speech here by evoking emotions inside and making your opponents vulnerable and weak. That s what propaganda has always been used for. Shakespeare s deeper meaning in Julius Caesar is that everyone is weak and vulnerable, no matter who or what you are. Everyone can have their emotions taken out by others, and speech is the tool and weapon to make opponents weak.
