Pre-Production
Pre-production Assessment
Locations
• Grange Farm Cottages
Benefits: Has a bus that leads close to it from close to my own
house, depicts a suitable scenario of open fields which is
pivotal to the plot of my piece, is within close proximity of a
friend’s house if anything is required.
Limitations: Shots would become very difficult to take on days
of bad weather (could possibly be dangerous). Solution to this
is that I will check the weather on the days I decide to shoot.
Could be costly to keep travelling back and forth if multiple
reshoots are needed. Solution to this is that I will have a clear
plan of what I need to shoot when going down there.
Locations
• York City Centre
Benefits: Easily accessible from my house. Still well lit at night and I am
incredibly familiar with the area so picking locations will be stress-free.
Limitations: At night, town is often not the wisest place to be for too
long due to the added danger of lack of constant people around.
Solution to this is that I will try to shoot at the early hours of it turning
dark and make sure I don't stray from anywhere that is a main street
or that I know well.
People could get in the way of the shot. Solution to this is that due to it
being later in the day there will hopefully be less people anyway,
however there are certain snickets off main roads that could be used
due to my knowledge that people rarely go down them, especially at
night.
Locations
• My House
Benefits: Easily accessible at all times. Can be set
up to look however I want it. Can film in any
room within reason or even set up a green
screen.
Limitations: Filming would have to be at a time
when people are not around or making noise.
Solution to this is to primarily use my own room
and at times when people have gone to bed.
Equipment
I will need:
• A camera capable of manual adjustment of aperture, ISO, focus, optical zoom and more.
This camera is one I possess personally. The Nikon D3100 will be used. It is capable of 1080p 30fps which is the highest
framerate or resolution I would wish to use for my project.
• A camera capable of wide angle shots, higher FPS for slow shows and optical image stabilisation.
The camera I would uses for this would likely be a mobile phone camera, for ease. This would thus be one of two
modern camera phones I possess, either the Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, or a mix of both. The
footage used here will be also filmed in 1080p at the 16:9 Aspect ratio to match the camera and any higher fps footage
will be appropriated in post production. I also possess an attachment for these that would allow me to use any typical
camera tripod to hold these phones.
• A computer for editing, storing footage, mixing music
For this, I will be using one of two computers, most likely. Either my personal custom built PC (i7-6700k, 16GB RAM,
GTX1060 6GB) or the College provided iMac 2021s (M1, 8GB RAM) while I am present in the building.
• A tripod
For this, I possess a camera tripod of my own that can be coupled with the previously mentioned attachment to work
with any of my capture devices. This tripod is adjustable and therefore could be used for essentially every locked off
shot I wish to perform.
• A few props – Newspaper, costumes, air rifle etc.
Any and all props or costumes that are used will be provided by me, provided by those I work on the project with, or
purchased or made specifically for this occasion. The newspaper, thus far, is the only prop I can imagine having to
custom design. I will produce the sleeve/cover and simply cover another newspaper with a print of this.
• Instruments for soundtrack production
At current, I am assuming the only instruments I will use for my music production to be my digital piano (Gear4Music
DP-6) and its portable counterpart (Carry-on 88 Key Folding Piano), the first of which can be used as MIDI input to a
computer with a provided wire, while the former can be used as MIDI input simply with a Micro-USB extension.
Together, they possess around 20 especially high quality sound modes, with around 100 extra synths of lesser quality
but that may still be of use. All sounds are copyright free, meaning I can produce a piece of music that is entirely
custom and mix it through my aforementioned computers. A good software to use for mixing would be Garage Band
due to its ease of use, therefore I will likely end up producing the music on the iMac over the PC.
Facilities
• I will edit my video mostly at College, so I am able to use
Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, of which are both
more user friendly, in comparison to free alternatives I
could provide myself at home. It also means I can use away
time to focus on filming and other parts of the project I
cannot do in College. Therefore, all I will likely need will be
the iMacs provided by College, with Adobe Premiere Pro
and After Effects as previously mentioned as well as
Photoshop for editing of posters and the newspaper prop.
Other common softwares such as Powerpoint, Word, notes,
safari etc will most likely come in handy also for research
and other portions of production. I will also use Garage
Band to mix any music that I don’t produce solely through
the raw performance of the composition.
Personnel
2 Members of Cast:
• Zuzanna Slupinska – Available most of the same
days as myself. Live together so no need for travel
or separate food etc to be arranged.
• Brandon Rogers – Lives at the filming location
that we will be using therefore no travel is
required or food needed to be organised.
Costs for bus fare to reach his house. Available
most days, can easily find a day in common due
to both only working part-time.
Creative Planning
Storyboarding
• Your storyboard should bring your idea to life
• Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video
• Provides a basis for production
• Suggested online storyboard creators are:
– http://www.pixton.com [very complicated]
– http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own
images]
• Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard
and scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
Storyboarding
• Trailer prelude: Open with a shot of a man reading a
newspaper. (Suspected serial killing, two people in
quick succession, childhood friends) being the key
points. The man, drinking a coffee, sits it down, stands
up slowly seemingly in high frustrations and proceeds
to run out of shot at blistering speed and then back
into shot immediately after, wearing a homemade
superhero inspired suit.
• Beginning of trailer: Music plays slowly. Voiceover.
Shots slowly fade in and out; Shows incident that gave
them powers, teases the villain, shows the hero.
Storyboarding
• Alternative Idea for Prelude: Voice-over
explaining some of the simple narrative from first
person while shots of main characters are shown
(gives the audience some pragmatics – sets the
tone).
• Followed by action, no voice-over
• Followed by scene establishing Invincible
character on farm
• Trailers likely needs to end with title and date of
release
Shot List
• Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown
of what you need to shoot for your video
• It should work in partnership with your storyboard
• It will be your working document when you film
• It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot
description, framing and action you will see
• It should also have information on performers in the
scene and other props, etc
• Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre-
production folder.
Shot List
3 Main Segments:
Trailer Opening
• Insert establishing shots of city etc
• Shots of central characters: Low Angle of Protagonist, High Angle of Villain, Shot of
other Protagonist, change colours for each
• Archival shots of characters from before incident
Trailer Mid Scene
• Establishing shots of farm
• Shot showing superspeed effect
• 2 Shots of Dialogue
Trailer Finale
• Shot of character booting computer
• Shot of character reading article – Close-Up of face
• Shot of character shocked
• Shot of murder when it occurred
(Credits shots)
Layout Plans
• Sketches and digital mock ups using existing
images off google to represent what your
products will look like.
• Sketch some ideas on paper, even if very basic.
Scan them in and add them to the document.
• Use the colours, fonts and similar images to
construct digital layout plans.
• Qualify each creative choice, providing a rationale
of why you chose it; “I used Red because…” “I
have the model looking at camera because…” etc.
Layout Plans
• Demonstration of Powers: I
wanted there to be a theme of
colour throughout that couldn't
properly be represented on
here but every hero having their
own defining colour would be
meaningful to me. E.g.
Brandon's scenes are more
yellow in tone, Zuza's are more
blue
• Prelude 1: This is one idea of
how I could format the start to
the trailer, followed by the 3rd
image which represents
another way of handling that
same concept. I want to see
where it will fit stylistically best
into the trailer
• Misc shots are just general
ideas for extra shots I would like
to include. Not essential to the
plot etc.
Props/Costume/etc
Finlay's Character:
• Black running shoes are discreet,
casual which helps narratively as the
character is trying to keep a low
profile.
• The shoes are worn and old
which presents some level of extensive
use but also amateurism or lack of
preparation as the shoes are not likely
what someone more organised as a
superhero would wear.
• The coat is once again low profile and
discreet, but also navy blue (a colour
often used on superhero costumes of
morally just heroes – superman,
spiderman, cpt america) Blue
represents freedom, confidence and
unity.
• The coat has lots of pockets which
would be practical for someone on the
run. It's also very baggy which would
reduce friction when chafing.
Props/Costume/etc
Zuza's Character:
• The green shirt she wears is a
colour often associated with
trickery, deception and villainy,
which suits well with what the
character's motives are. It also fits
well with the tinge present in the
scene where we discover this
character has seemingly been
killed.
• The long coat is often used to
show someone who is shady or
powerful, both of which also
encompass traits of this character.
• They are well-dressed which
suggests they are well thought-out
and civilised, which works
in perfect contrast with
their actions.
• Black clothing is often associated
with criminals or people
undercover.
Props/Costume/etc
Brandon's Character:
• The black coat is once again a
sign of someone who is
undercover or in hiding. The
yellow highlights help represent
the little bit of colour or
attachment to their past that this
character has (which
compliments the sepia tinge of
their scenes).
• The coat is also more specifically
a winter jacket which would be
sensible for someone living in a
rural area to possess.
• The baseball cap they are
wearing is also something that is
typical of someone not wanting
to attract attention, which is this
character's main desire.
Sound Effects/Music
• Music: This will be produced by myself using appropriate
instruments in the common style of most Comic Book Movie’s
soundtracks. Most Superhero themes are done in a Minor key,
therefore I shall be making my final composition in the key of G
Minor. I will come up with the melody at the piano and then
transfer it via MIDI, adjusting it so that it’s more rhythmically
accurate in post-production. I will then add appropriate backing
synths or drums in the same key as the notes, to add depth or
higher intensity to certain parts if found appropriate.
• Sound Effect: Most sound will be non-diegetic but for that which
requires sound, I will likely recreate it through foley or post-
recording of voices. Another alternative would be to use an audio
recorder on set, if one can be acquired before filming. Either
method would work, provided any audio collected in post is treated
with effects to be made appropriate to the soundscape.
Script/Copy
Narration: This City has changed. We've changed
it. And we've never been the same since the
incident. The heroes, the villains and the ones
in-between.
The Grange Estate. Home of the Invincible Man.
We're the only two left now. We were all friends
in youth but now we're being hunted by one of
our own.

Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
Could face issues with rowdy people in town. Shoot at earlier times. Avoid busy places. Keep
a constant idea of how far we are from the
nearest store or home.
Could rain, terrain could be more dangerous. Bring umbrellas, check weather forecasts. If
weather gets too bad stop filming.
Could trip while running. Ensure laces are tied and tucked in shoes in
case. Film running shots close to a home so that
we can always return if an injury occurs.

  • 6. Equipment I will need: • A camera capable of manual adjustment of aperture, ISO, focus, optical zoom and more. This camera is one I possess personally. The Nikon D3100 will be used. It is capable of 1080p 30fps which is the highest framerate or resolution I would wish to use for my project. • A camera capable of wide angle shots, higher FPS for slow shows and optical image stabilisation. The camera I would uses for this would likely be a mobile phone camera, for ease. This would thus be one of two modern camera phones I possess, either the Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC or the Samsung Galaxy Note 10, or a mix of both. The footage used here will be also filmed in 1080p at the 16:9 Aspect ratio to match the camera and any higher fps footage will be appropriated in post production. I also possess an attachment for these that would allow me to use any typical camera tripod to hold these phones. • A computer for editing, storing footage, mixing music For this, I will be using one of two computers, most likely. Either my personal custom built PC (i7-6700k, 16GB RAM, GTX1060 6GB) or the College provided iMac 2021s (M1, 8GB RAM) while I am present in the building. • A tripod For this, I possess a camera tripod of my own that can be coupled with the previously mentioned attachment to work with any of my capture devices. This tripod is adjustable and therefore could be used for essentially every locked off shot I wish to perform. • A few props – Newspaper, costumes, air rifle etc. Any and all props or costumes that are used will be provided by me, provided by those I work on the project with, or purchased or made specifically for this occasion. The newspaper, thus far, is the only prop I can imagine having to custom design. I will produce the sleeve/cover and simply cover another newspaper with a print of this. • Instruments for soundtrack production At current, I am assuming the only instruments I will use for my music production to be my digital piano (Gear4Music DP-6) and its portable counterpart (Carry-on 88 Key Folding Piano), the first of which can be used as MIDI input to a computer with a provided wire, while the former can be used as MIDI input simply with a Micro-USB extension. Together, they possess around 20 especially high quality sound modes, with around 100 extra synths of lesser quality but that may still be of use. All sounds are copyright free, meaning I can produce a piece of music that is entirely custom and mix it through my aforementioned computers. A good software to use for mixing would be Garage Band due to its ease of use, therefore I will likely end up producing the music on the iMac over the PC.
  • 7. Facilities • I will edit my video mostly at College, so I am able to use Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects, of which are both more user friendly, in comparison to free alternatives I could provide myself at home. It also means I can use away time to focus on filming and other parts of the project I cannot do in College. Therefore, all I will likely need will be the iMacs provided by College, with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects as previously mentioned as well as Photoshop for editing of posters and the newspaper prop. Other common softwares such as Powerpoint, Word, notes, safari etc will most likely come in handy also for research and other portions of production. I will also use Garage Band to mix any music that I don’t produce solely through the raw performance of the composition.
  • 8. Personnel 2 Members of Cast: • Zuzanna Slupinska – Available most of the same days as myself. Live together so no need for travel or separate food etc to be arranged. • Brandon Rogers – Lives at the filming location that we will be using therefore no travel is required or food needed to be organised. Costs for bus fare to reach his house. Available most days, can easily find a day in common due to both only working part-time.
  • 10. Storyboarding • Your storyboard should bring your idea to life • Provide an idea of the sequencing of you video • Provides a basis for production • Suggested online storyboard creators are: – https://www.storyboardthat.com – http://www.pixton.com [very complicated] – http://www.storyjumper.com [allows you to insert your own images] • Alternatively, hand draw or photograph your storyboard and scan or copy to insert it onto your slides
  • 11. Storyboarding • Trailer prelude: Open with a shot of a man reading a newspaper. (Suspected serial killing, two people in quick succession, childhood friends) being the key points. The man, drinking a coffee, sits it down, stands up slowly seemingly in high frustrations and proceeds to run out of shot at blistering speed and then back into shot immediately after, wearing a homemade superhero inspired suit. • Beginning of trailer: Music plays slowly. Voiceover. Shots slowly fade in and out; Shows incident that gave them powers, teases the villain, shows the hero.
  • 12. Storyboarding • Alternative Idea for Prelude: Voice-over explaining some of the simple narrative from first person while shots of main characters are shown (gives the audience some pragmatics – sets the tone). • Followed by action, no voice-over • Followed by scene establishing Invincible character on farm • Trailers likely needs to end with title and date of release
  • 13. Shot List • Your shot list should contain the sequential breakdown of what you need to shoot for your video • It should work in partnership with your storyboard • It will be your working document when you film • It should contain the shot number, scene number, shot description, framing and action you will see • It should also have information on performers in the scene and other props, etc • Shot list template is on Blackboard in the pre- production folder.
  • 14. Shot List 3 Main Segments: Trailer Opening • Insert establishing shots of city etc • Shots of central characters: Low Angle of Protagonist, High Angle of Villain, Shot of other Protagonist, change colours for each • Archival shots of characters from before incident Trailer Mid Scene • Establishing shots of farm • Shot showing superspeed effect • 2 Shots of Dialogue Trailer Finale • Shot of character booting computer • Shot of character reading article – Close-Up of face • Shot of character shocked • Shot of murder when it occurred (Credits shots)
  • 15. Layout Plans • Sketches and digital mock ups using existing images off google to represent what your products will look like. • Sketch some ideas on paper, even if very basic. Scan them in and add them to the document. • Use the colours, fonts and similar images to construct digital layout plans. • Qualify each creative choice, providing a rationale of why you chose it; “I used Red because…” “I have the model looking at camera because…” etc.
  • 16. Layout Plans • Demonstration of Powers: I wanted there to be a theme of colour throughout that couldn't properly be represented on here but every hero having their own defining colour would be meaningful to me. E.g. Brandon's scenes are more yellow in tone, Zuza's are more blue • Prelude 1: This is one idea of how I could format the start to the trailer, followed by the 3rd image which represents another way of handling that same concept. I want to see where it will fit stylistically best into the trailer • Misc shots are just general ideas for extra shots I would like to include. Not essential to the plot etc.
  • 17. Props/Costume/etc Finlay's Character: • Black running shoes are discreet, casual which helps narratively as the character is trying to keep a low profile. • The shoes are worn and old which presents some level of extensive use but also amateurism or lack of preparation as the shoes are not likely what someone more organised as a superhero would wear. • The coat is once again low profile and discreet, but also navy blue (a colour often used on superhero costumes of morally just heroes – superman, spiderman, cpt america) Blue represents freedom, confidence and unity. • The coat has lots of pockets which would be practical for someone on the run. It's also very baggy which would reduce friction when chafing.
  • 18. Props/Costume/etc Zuza's Character: • The green shirt she wears is a colour often associated with trickery, deception and villainy, which suits well with what the character's motives are. It also fits well with the tinge present in the scene where we discover this character has seemingly been killed. • The long coat is often used to show someone who is shady or powerful, both of which also encompass traits of this character. • They are well-dressed which suggests they are well thought-out and civilised, which works in perfect contrast with their actions. • Black clothing is often associated with criminals or people undercover.
  • 19. Props/Costume/etc Brandon's Character: • The black coat is once again a sign of someone who is undercover or in hiding. The yellow highlights help represent the little bit of colour or attachment to their past that this character has (which compliments the sepia tinge of their scenes). • The coat is also more specifically a winter jacket which would be sensible for someone living in a rural area to possess. • The baseball cap they are wearing is also something that is typical of someone not wanting to attract attention, which is this character's main desire.
  • 20. Sound Effects/Music • Music: This will be produced by myself using appropriate instruments in the common style of most Comic Book Movie’s soundtracks. Most Superhero themes are done in a Minor key, therefore I shall be making my final composition in the key of G Minor. I will come up with the melody at the piano and then transfer it via MIDI, adjusting it so that it’s more rhythmically accurate in post-production. I will then add appropriate backing synths or drums in the same key as the notes, to add depth or higher intensity to certain parts if found appropriate. • Sound Effect: Most sound will be non-diegetic but for that which requires sound, I will likely recreate it through foley or post- recording of voices. Another alternative would be to use an audio recorder on set, if one can be acquired before filming. Either method would work, provided any audio collected in post is treated with effects to be made appropriate to the soundscape.
  • 21. Script/Copy Narration: This City has changed. We've changed it. And we've never been the same since the incident. The heroes, the villains and the ones in-between. The Grange Estate. Home of the Invincible Man. We're the only two left now. We were all friends in youth but now we're being hunted by one of our own.

  • 29. Health and Safety Potential Issue How will the issue be avoided? Could face issues with rowdy people in town. Shoot at earlier times. Avoid busy places. Keep a constant idea of how far we are from the nearest store or home. Could rain, terrain could be more dangerous. Bring umbrellas, check weather forecasts. If weather gets too bad stop filming. Could trip while running. Ensure laces are tied and tucked in shoes in case. Film running shots close to a home so that we can always return if an injury occurs.
