2. GUIDANC
E
This template PowerPoint presentation
includes all the relevant elements you
should cover for a practical project. It
is not exhaustive, but provides some
guidance on stages, types of planning
and documents you should be
assembling. This is not a one size fits
all document, you will need to amend,
rejig and add/subtract sections
depending on what you are making.
Add more pages to each section
where necessary [you should be doing
this!]
Add visuals as you see necessary.
This document will be added to as you
progress through the pre-production
phase.

4. RESEARCH & IDEA
GENERATION
Use section to track your process of of generating ideas.
List and discuss the styles, techniques and conventions
that you have identified in your research. Explore how
you could approach the project using different methods
You can add any extra info you think is relevant, images,
mind maps, etc
For quick mind maps you could use bubbl.us
Make sure you assess the viability of ideas as well as the
potential for them creatively.
5. RESEARCH
Use this to summarise production research and existing
products from your previous investigations. Link this into
you idea generation and development.
6. RESEARCH
For my research I decided to look at existing fanzines
and what they was. I learnt that fanzines are made by
fans and there are many different genres of fanzines.
The most popular and common fanzines that was I
researched into was music fanzines. Researching that
genre of fanzines will link into my project as I am
wanting to do a music one also so this will help me as I
already have a good idea of what one looks like and what
ill need to include in it. I also found fashion fanzines and
horror fanzines that was created, and I seen that the
horror fanzines had more writing on whereas the music
fanzines had more pictures than writing or the picture
was the main frame of the cover.
7. RESEARCH
I also decided to research deeper into music fanzines
and look at the different genres specifically drum and
bass as that is what I want to do my fanzine on. I looked
at a few of existing products and they all had the image
as the main attraction and less writing. They also
included minimal colours either 3 or 4 but they always
had a bright colour. The use of the bright colour will
attract the audience. The images are always in the middle
of the page which grabs your attention so for my project
I will have to make sure the picture is something that will
make people want to read my fanzine.
8. POTENTIAL APPROACHES
One idea I am potentially going to pursue is a fanzine on
Drum and Bass music. In this fanzine I could include
pictures of famous drum and bass artists, a timeline of
the evolution and where it came from and when it started
becoming popular. I would also interview a new
starting DJ and get his view of drum and bass. If I was to
create this fanzine, I would want to make the cover the
main attraction with bright colours and a big image.
Another potential idea I could do is
a documentary on the different fashion trends, and I
will specifically focus on shoes and which shoes have
become most popular over the recent years.
9. POTENTIAL TECHNIQUES TO
USE
The way I am planning to make my fanzine is including
bright colours but also keeping it to 2 or 3 minimum to
not overcomplicate it and throw off the reader. I would
also as the front cover try and replicate a photo of a
Drum and Bass artists by taking pictures of them and
editing it to make it look professional. I will also
interview someone and include that as one of the pages.
To create these, I will be using photoshop to edit my
pictures.
10. MIND MAP OF IDEAS
[SUMMARY OF IDEAS]
Drum and
bass fanzine
Make my own
font that will fit
the aesthetic of
drum and bass.
A font that will
express how
loud it is.
Persistent colour
scheme.
Images such as pictures of rave
sets, with the bright lights and I
will also be including pictures I
take of whoever I choose to be the
DJ.
Interviews
Information on
the top trending
songs and
artists.
Timeline of drum
and bass culture,
where it came from
and when it started.
11. SUMMARY
5 opportunities of your ideas
⢠I'll be able to explore the rave culture and find out more information about the
genre.
⢠I will be able to get peoples perspectives on drum and bass culture.
⢠I get to experience the rave environment.
⢠I get an opportunity to further my skills in print and gain experience because I've
never made a fanzine before.
⢠Travelling further to different areas to go to these raves gives me the opportunity
to expand my knowledge on the genre of music so his will have a positive impact
on my fanzine.
12. SUMMARY
5 restrictions to your ideas
⢠It won't be practical to interview people at the rave as they won't be going there to
be getting asked questions, they are there for the music.
⢠It will also be hard to interview a professional DJ who knows a lot about the
culture as I won't be able to contact them as they are famous.
⢠As fanzines are diy made and haven't come from a generation where
everyone used social media, a restriction I will have might be being able to reach
the modern target audience.
⢠Another restriction I had was struggling to find drum and bass fanzines due to a
lack of existing ones, so I struggled to find a reference point to start from.
⢠I've had to travel further away to raves because I discovered that itâs a better-
quality environment to get my content as the more famous artists go to
bigger cities with bigger venues to perform.
13. FINAL IDEA â RATIONALE
Why this idea? Why this format? What skills do you have that
support this and what are you looking forward to exploring more.
I chose to do this idea as I have a big interest and enjoy listening to
music specifically the drum and bass genre so if I'm doing it on a
subject I like I'm more likely to have fun making it and getting a lot
of information packed into the fanzine. I wanted to make a fanzine
over a podcast or documentary as I like the print side of media. A
fanzine is also like a magazine, and I enjoy reading/looking at
magazines so being able to make my own magazine is something
that would benefit me as I potentially want to do something like
that for a future job. I have made a few magazine covers in the past
for projects, and I learnt that I really enjoyed both the photography
side and the editing side of the production. This also means I have
gained skills and have abit more knowledge so I can make this next
project even better as I already know how to use the software and
how to lay out a magazine. I'm looking forward to the production
of a fanzine as before this project I had never heard of them so the
idea of doing something for the first time excites me. I am also
looking forward to showing the final product to other people that
enjoy this kind of music and getting their thoughts and opinions
on it.
14. FINAL IDEA â CREATIVE
CONCEPT
What do you want to make, reference the look, style and
type of project. This could be a synopsis of the piece and
some visual reference points. Reference content and the
themes you are wanting to explore and resources that
might help you to achieve your aims.
I am wanting to make a fanzine.
16. GUIDANCE:
PRE-PRODUCTION
ASSESSMENT
You need to assess the viability of your production and
investigate what is required to enable you to make it.
Much of this task is hypothetical, which means you will
need to investigate standard costings for such a
production and apply these to your planned production
considering which equipment you would need and
resources, etc
Resources to support this are on Teams.
Delete the questions on each slide and insert your
responses
17. TITLE OF
PRODUCTION/PRODUCTION
OUTLINE
Summary of intended production:
Detail here what you are going to make and the intended
outcome and what will be delivered [duration, format[s],
etc]
Specific outline your intended technical/equipment
requirements
Include any details that you think [you could use material
from a pitch]
18. LOCATIONS
You need to identify locations and plan a recce.
What are the limitations and risks, eg distance, access, cost, weather? How will
you manage this?
As I am doing a fanzine there isn't many locations I will need as its mostly print
but I will need to find a location for these places:
1- Interview-the interview will need to take place in a quiet space so that will
probably be in one of our houses. The limitations of this will be having to find the
right time to do it when both people are free and as we are doing it in a house, we
probably need to do it when nobody else is in to reduce background noise.
2- Pictures- for my fanzine I will need to photograph my own picture and
recreate someone to look like a DJ. The location I will probably use for this is
either just somewhere with a plain background so like the studio or I will again go
to one of our houses in a spare room with not too much going on in the
background.
These locations won't have many limitations as they are in a house which will be
free of cost, the weather won't affect us as we will be inside, and it is safe
environments so there won't be any risks.
19. EQUIPMENT
What do you need? E.g. equipment, resources? Mostly
from college, but who do you need to speak to get this
kit? What is available? When?
Look at equipment hire places, etc
The equipment I will need is a camera to take pictures to
include in my fanzine. I will most likely just use my
phone as it has a great quality camera. This is available
for me whenever my crew is ready to be photographed. I
will also be using the college computers and my laptop
to edit my pictures and fanzine on the app photoshop. I
also would like to create my own font for the project, and
I will be doing this by using the website
20. FACILITIES
Where will you edit your video? Do you need any other
specialist facilities
I will be editing my product mostly at college, but I am
also able to do it at home if I need to work extra on it. I
could potentially need to book out the studio to get
some extra pictures taken if the ones I originally do at
home didnât come out as how I wanted them to.
21. PERSONNEL
CREW: What is you team? Who is in it? What are each team members
strengths/weaknesses? When are they available?
CAST: Do you need any external performers? When are they available? Cost
implications? Will you have to feed them? Transport them?
Other personnel? Is anyone else helping you? Models? Contributors? Interviewees?
The main person who is going to be in my project is Dan Rowley. I chose to use
this person as my Dj as he is already a new starter and has performed at a few
events already, so this is a positive for me as he will know a lot about the topic
from both the audience's perspective and the performers perspective. The
weakness of this person is that he is currently living in Manchester so I'm unsure
yet when I will be able to get these pictures of him and interview him.
If I decide that I donât like the outcome of these photos I will get either Jamie or
Flynn to model the photos of me. The positives of me using one of them two as a
model is that they go to college, and we can use the studio which will have a
better outcome for the background of my photos. The weaknesses of using them
is that they donât have the outfit/clothing that typical DJs would wear so I would
most likely have to provide the outfit for them unless I decided to just do a close
up face shot.
22. PROPS/COSTUME/CONSUMAB
LES/ETC
Props:
⢠Sunglasses, either placed on top of head or on their face- not 100% decided on
that yet as I would ideally be wanting to see their face, but I could get multiple
shots of them wearing them and ones without.
⢠DJ decks- if I took pictures of Dan, I would be able to get the DJ decks in as he
has his own and this is what a professional performer uses so this could be
included into the photos.
Costume- From doing my research of what professional DJ performers wear I have
seen that they donât have a specific outfit and is usually just a t-shirt- plain or
designed, so this is probably how I would dress them.
23. INTERVIEW
Name of person I'm going to interview- Dan Rowley
The reason I will be going to interview this person is because he is new starter in
the DJ environment. I think he is a good person to interview as before he started
performing at his own events, he already had a passion for the drum and bass
music so from him attending other raves and seeing other famous artists he is
the one now performing so it would be interesting to see how it feels from both
the audience and performer perspective.
Interviewing this person will link to my project as my whole fanzine is about the
rave culture and Drum and Bass music.
For my interview, I have 2 options I could explore which is writing out
the interview and putting it into the fanzine or I could put a qr code you can scan,
and it would take you to a video of the interview being recorded and you can
watch it instead of reading. I could even do both and let the reader chose which
one to pick.
The location of my interview will probably be in a house in a quiet room.
25. PRE-PRODUCTION: VISUAL
PLANNING
This section is concerned with the visual/creative
planning of your production. This is WHAT you want to
make
You should use this section to develop what is it going to
look/sound like and establish what the visual design is
and the desired sequence.
It is important that you âpre-visualiseâ the project before
you make it; it will make filming and production a more
streamlined process.
The following tasks should be part of your visual
planning, including:
ď Pre-visualisation and concept boards
ď Storyboarding
ď Shot list
ď Flat plans
ď Colour plans
26. PRE-
VISUALISATION/CONCEPT
BOARDS
Tool for exploring the direction and visuals
Provides inspiration and information for the âlook & feelâ
Presents key moments in your video
A means to sketch/plan ideas
Information on colour/lighting
Defining the âmise-en-sceneâ
Include as much here as you like, but keep it relevant to the
production, the following slides have been left blank for you
to approach in your own way, add more as you need to
Extension suggestion: edit a short sequence of clips that
have inspired or influenced your video [similar to this:

hunger-games-might-be-better-than-the-real-movie]
27. CONCEPT BOARD
DISCUSSION/EXPLANATION
For my fanzine I will use a bright colours around 1or 2
bright colours that work well together then I will also use
black and white to not overcomplicate it and look messy.
I will also be making my own font and I want to create a
big bold one that stands out, so the reader knows
exactly what the fanzine is about. As I am doing an
interview on an upcoming Dj artist, I will create an album
cover to include in the project. On my concept board I
included photographs of famous DJs that I enjoy
listening to and I have seen live so in my fanzine I will
include a page of their top songs and a few facts about
them. I could also include photographs of the pictures I
have taken whilst being at a rave of them performing.
28. MOVING IMAGE TEST/DRAFT
IMAGE TESTING
This is an album cover
mock up I have designed,
and I will include
something similar on a
page of my fanzine.

29. STRUCTURAL
BREAKDOWN/PLANNING
Breakdown your project into its basic sections and apply
broad visual and creative ideas to each section.
You can use this as the master template for your
production, then add more shots/pages, etc to each
section when you develop your full sequenced plan and
planned outcomes.
You should create a slide showing all the sections of the
project, then add a slide for each section with timings,
what happens visually and in terms of audio, page layout
aim to have as much specific detail as possible.
The structure of the project and method of doing this is
dictated by the type of project.
30. AUDIO AND OTHER PLANNING
Remember, video production is a multi-sensory medium,
do not forget your audio planning, whether this is for
spoken dialogue, VO/narration, sound effect or
soundtrack. This needs detailed planning, linking to
sequencing and sourcing/creating.
In my fanzine I may include a link for you to click so you
can listen to a soundtrack of my chosen DJ of the music
they have mixed themselves on decks.
I am also thinking to add the option to listen to the
interview with the Dj instead of just reading it because
some people might want to listen to it over reading it. I
will record my interview using the recording app on my
phone which has high standard sound quality.
31. PRINT/NON-MOVING IMAGE
PLANNING
Rather than storyboarding and sequence planning, print
and still image projects require different image and
layout plans.
You should research conventions for your chosen
medium in your earlier work and then approach the
project using some of the methods youâve discovered.
I have researched into fanzines, and I have discovered all
of them include images so this is definitely something I
will be adding in mine. There is different varieties of
fanzines, and some include more text than image and
vice versa, I want to include a good amount of text to
image whether this be a couple pages dedicated to
photography and then other pages where it is both
image and text.
33. ORGANISATIONAL PLANNING
If the visual and creative planning is the WHAT of the production, organisational planning the
WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY of the production.
This is the functional planning for the project, applying common sense and organisation to
your creative ideas.
Who- The people I am including in my fanzine are Jamie Brown, Flynn Westwood and Dan
Rowley. I chose to use male models as I wanted to do a Male band/Djs.
What- My idea is to make a Fanzine on Drum and Bass, including images of Artists, the scenery
of raves, album covers, rave lineups, interview with the artist, soundtrack of the Djs mix and a
page dedicated to the top artists and songs of the year. I will potentially do a page of
the Evalution of Drum and Bass.
Where- I will be making the project between Manchester, Leeds and York. The reason of
Manchester and Leeds is because the pictures I already have from raves ive attended at
Manchester and Leeds. I will also be doing the interview at either Manchester or Leeds. In York,
I will be using the studio hopefully at college to get some more photographs of the people I am
using to be DJs.
When- I will be making this project over the next couple of weeks. Specifically, 16th of
December I plan to get the pictures at College and then edit them on Photoshop and create the
page for my Fanzine. I already started doing mockups today (7th December) of an Album cover.
I will continue to create mock ups tomorrow (8th December) of the cover and other things I
want in my fanzine. Over Christmas holidays I will most likely get my interview sorted and
written up.
Why- I am creating this project to attract the people who are already interested in Drum and
Bass music, I thought of this idea as I am a fan of the music and if someone else released
a fanzine on this specific subject I would be interested in it. I also am aiming to get people who
wouldnât usually listen to this kind of music and educate them on the topic and maybe after
they have read it, they might listen to the music abit more and even possibly attend some
raves.
34. PRODUCTION GROUP INFO
Include names, contact info, and defined roles at
difference stages of production, using a table is
suggested
Name Contact Info Roles
Dan Rowley 0780058010
0
model
Flynn
Westwood
0748412311
8
model
Jamie Brown 0753950957
6
model
35. LOCATION INFORMATION
Information and images of your location[s] for filming
You should have address details, clearance/premissions
for filming, recce photos and floorplans [including
camera, equipment and cast/crew layouts]
Where possible, have a plan B fallback location option
Assess each location for any issues and suggest
solutions
36. LOCATIONS
For my project I will be including locations from both
Manchester and Leeds, this is because I will be attending
raves at both these locations where I will be getting
pictures. Some photographs I will already have from
Leeds as I've already been to these raves but the rave in
Manchester I have not yet been to. The rave taking place
in Manchester is the event DNB all stars at The
Warehouse Project also known as "whp". I will also be
including locations inside a house either in Leeds or
Manchester again, this is where the interview will most
likely take place along with photographs of the DJ. I
potentially will include other pictures and if I decide to
do this, I will use the studio in college.
37. RISK ASSESSMENT
Risk Assess each separate filming location using the
table in the camera H&S PP on Teams kit booking as a
starting point.
Completing a generic filming assessment would be a
start, then you can add specialist/site specific risks as
you progress your production
Remember, a Risk Assessment is an ongoing document,
you should evaluate if anything changes in production
and when you put control measures in place
You should add the table to each call sheet for each
location
38. RISK ASSESSMENT
In the studio, a potential place I will be taking pictures
there is a few risks that could happen such as the lights
could fall on someone's head or if the light was too
bright it could damage someone's eyes. Also, another
risk in the studio is that there is a lot of cables so
someone could trip over and fall.
As I am taking photographs outside of college too there
will be risks when I am in the public too such as my
equipment could get stolen or broken if I left it to one
side someone can easily stand on it or take it without me
realising.
39. PRODUCTION SCHEDULE
Your schedule should budget a total of 10 hours for
production, that is for the filming and editing of your
project.
You should plan when youâre filming and how you intend
to use the in class days on your timetable/class schedule
40. SCHEDULE
1st week of production- I will get the pictures I need for
my fanzine using my models I have listed in the slides
above. I will also be using content I have got from
previous raves I've been to.
2nd week of production- I will be interviewing my
chosen person for my Fanzine (Dan) and ask him
questions related to my topic.
The remaining weeks of production- I will start to create
my fanzine on photoshop and piece it together for it to
look like a fanzine.
41. CLEARANCE AND
PERMISSIONS
Any place you film and anyone you use in the filming of
your video must have a completed form
Blank forms are on Blackboard for you to complete and
insert here
