7. Existing products
Pele short biography
Motivational success story of Neymar
Cristiano Ronaldo - Unhuman
Netflix documentary styling
8. Existing product audience- Netflix styling
This product is aimed at people who want to make a Netflix style
documentary, the age range can be wide with this video but the age
range that would probably most stereotypically 15–30-year-olds since it
seems like they are more likely to be starting out their carriers as
documentarians.
They have created a list of how to
make and style certain things like
lighting and positioning of cameras
The listing is very clear of what you
need and is presentenced in a very
simple and clear flowing animation
9. Existing products production method- Netflix
styling
The production of the Netflix styling is very fast, and narrative based
with for the dark tones having a darker shadow cast over the
interviewees face, and multiple cameras being used with wide shots
and close shots.
The production set is very
simple with it being made in a
flat and using different things
like bedsheets to help filter the
light.
To produce the dark look of the interview the
producer has used a sheet to cover the light as
to not make it as harsh of a contrast on
the interviewees face but with it being angled
right to create shadows over the interviewees
face
The equipment is very
compact and can be used
in a small space.
The microphone has its
own stand and therefore
doesn't need to be
operated by another
person and will be more
consistent on the noise
levels throughout the
whole recording
10. Existing production tone and style
of production, genre- Netflix Styling
There is a clear style and production behind the whole product, and
they keep a constant theme of darkness throughout the whole video.
The lighting method has
been done to get a triangle
the left side of his face also
known as Rembrandt
lighting- this gives a dark
and dramatic look to the
video as it explains the
story as it is a play on true
crime documentary's
The background is blurred which really drags the
attention to the interviewee and makes you really
focus on what they are saying
There are objects in the
background like the plants and
shelf which makes an
indication that we are in the
interviewees house as there is
quite plain mondain things
behind him
Elsewhere in the video there is
pictures taken and they are cut
together so that it would show
the makes subject from
different angles, but it made it a
lot more dramatic
11. Existing products audience- Pele
This product is aimed at old football fans and fans wanting to see the
history of important players in their clubs' history. The video is easy
format with pictures and videos which are era appropriate for the
timeline. The video is very clear and direct with it like most
documentary’s following a linear story format.
The video is very clear and simple,
and I would say that it was aimed
at kids and teenagers since it uses
text to speech to narrate the short
documentary and is very clear and
simple version of Pele's life story
I also think the people who would
watch the documentary would be
older football fans wanting to look
back at old players that they used to
watch
12. Existing product production methods- Pele
The editing isn’t very high quality with it mostly being pictures and
footage from games being uploaded to make the majority pf the video
with subtitles as well being put at the bottom of the screen. As well
the use quite low-quality images. The audio is a text to audio speech
and is a bit devaluing to the production.
The image is quite grainy and
doesn't look like it’s the best
quality- this suggest they
didn't search for the best
quality videos for there
production
Image has been made through cutting
out both football players then laying
them over a blurred football ground-
background
The text for the narration is very clear
and nicely placed out of the way but is
still clear to read and to understand
because of the font and colours chosen
for the text
13. Existing production tone and style of
production, genre- Pele
The genre is a biography. The production style of the video is very
random with no distinct style with the editing and transitions being
very jarring.
There is no clear or distinct
style for the video and is
edited very simply and
doesn't use actual footage,
so it is only the pictures that
are edited, and they are
edited very lightly
The tone of the production is to
inform and get as much information
out as possible about Pele and his
career. There is no real emotion
involved since it cannot really be
displayed when a robot is narrating
the video
14. Existing products audience- Neymar
The video is very clear, and it follows the same linear structure which
most biography following them through there life to the present day or
when they died. The audience that would be watching this would be a
lot younger than the Pele audience since Neymar is a lot more relevant
than Pele in current football and his fans are more likely that they are
younger, so the format fits the age range and is clear and precises with
its audio and video usage.
This video is aimed at people in there mid 20s to
their mid 30s this is because the documentary
about Neymar's hard life as a young person
eventually turns into a success story and has a
motivation bit at the end of the video
The video is very clear and
follows a linear structure
making it still easily
accessable and easy to
follow for younger children
15. Existing product production methods-
Neymar
The production method is using stock footage as well a clear recorded
voice, the editing was consistent and good throughout the whole
production. Stock footage and stock images as well as real photo and
footage are used to create a picture for the undocumented parts of the
story.
The use of stock footage
througout the the video is
useful to help visualise the
parts of the life that
haven't been recorded or
documented
Using the text to make it easier
to follow for people who struggle
to understand the narrator's
accent which is making the video
more accessible to a wider
audience
The stock footage sometimes
doesn't make too much sense
where there is a part in the
video where it is talking about
Neymar being unable to bake
cookies since his family couldn't
afford it and, on the screen, it
shows cookies that are being
made which makes no sense
going along with the story
16. Existing production tone and style of
production, genre- Neymar
Genre is a biography. The style of the production is informative since it
is very slick and isn’t going for on specific style of editing it is just the
best way to represent the information.
The tone of the video is up
lifting since it is showing
how Neymar came from
nothing and managed to
make a name for himself
There is no clear style to the
production since the
footage wasn't taken by the
people who made it the
editing is very basic and
simple and doesn't add too
much in the way of
capturing the views
The way this production has been
done is to inform in the clearest
way possible, and the visuals have
been done in a similar way to
make them become more visual
17. Existing product audience- Cristiano Ronaldo
The audience that this documentary is aimed at is teenagers and
upward since it talks about war and alcoholism as well as the whole
project being set in a dark tone for the whole video. As well the way
the presenter talks is a lot more sophisticated than he would if it was
for children.
The video is aimed towards
teenagers since it is very stylistic
in retro vhs style and being very
factual
The video is very well made
and goes on for 48 mins and is
very informative which is why
I think it is made for a slightly
more mature audience
The video had a style of a vhs
video with the quality of the
video being lowered to make the
video older than it act it is this
would appeal to a teenage
audience since it will be nostalgic
to them and is very popular in
videos
18. Existing products production methods-
Cristiano Ronaldo
The production of this documentary was very high quality with footage
from the real-life events being used and only a couple stock footage
videos used for certain things that weren’t recorded but mostly they
used actual footage through the whole video. The video also as a guide
who deliveries the information in an organised and clear way.
The production of the
documentary is obviously
very high quality and uses
high quality stock footage
from actual events
The high-quality stock
footage is from the actual
games and historical events
The narration is very clear and well-spoken,
and this combined with the footage makes
the quality of presentation in the video go
up
The way the narrator presents the
information is in a very organised and
structured way making the consumption
and deliver of the information easier for
the viewer
19. Existing product production tone and style of
production, genre- Cristiano Ronaldo
There was a lot of filters over the footage which gave it retro, ruff
aesthetic to the footage, the newer the footage the better the quality
but I do think that the creator did this on purpose because of the
beginning of his life was hard and it got a lot clearer the more his life
improved as well as the time frame and the gradual increase in camera
quality.
The tone of the video is to inform the
viewer about the information but also
has a nostalgic feel to it with the vhs
appearance and styling of the video
The intro has Tarantino look to it with
the red text and with it being very
abstract
The style of the production is an old retro
video with the video quality being
stylistically lowered.
20. Techniques potentially to use
Intervuing, create a soild colour background which will contrast with the
intervuee's clothes, and set up the lighting to created certain shadows to
match the mood of the documentary, face has more shadows when there is
a darker topic and less shadows if it is more lighthearted.
Two camera's one futher back than the other with a wider lense or futher
abck for a wider shot. Then the second camera is an uplose shot usually off
certain and takes more of a side proflie shot of the intervuee. This technique
is used to make the intervue have more visual interest since it is just a person
sat talking to the camera.
B roll footage this can be stock footage as well as live action footage of the
real thing or recreations, as well as old photos from the time period.
22. Reflection of experiment- Positive
What I did was interview Antony about the football transfer market.
The positive of my research where I did this by researching different
transfers like a big one of Ronaldo going to Man United along with the
record-breaking transfer of Neymar to PSG and I also researched
Messi's free transfer to PSG from Barcelona, I picked these transfers
because they were well known so they would very easily answer, and
he would know them and already formed an opinion of the subject. I
then created my questions based of this research I left the questions
quite open so that Antony could answer in any way he liked an could
elaborate as much as he wanted to, I also added a question that was
more to get an opinion which was "do you think there is too much
money spent in football".
23. Reflection of experiment- Negative
The negatives of my experiment where I didn't do as much research as I
could, and I didn't ask questions about the team he supports Chelsea
and their recent transfers and their record transfers, those questions
would have had a stronger opinion behind them since he would have
been more involved in the questions since he cares more about the
team. With the questions I could have made more which links to
my research and me nothing doing as much research as I could of, I also
should have worded the questions to make them work without me
talking so that he tells the story in a way where it doesn't need to show
my question, I also could've used a wider range of question styles
instead of just using the "what do think" format of questions.
25. Potential experiments
Practice interview interviewing someone on a chosen topic by them, then I
interview the person on their topic so I can practice and experiment with the
whole interviewing experience.
Practices editing with stock footage to try and make smooth transitions
between clips, and to try and piece a story together through the stock
footage.
Practice filming b roll and setting up a set and lighting to record and practice
setting up the tripod.
I will do the first experiment since it covers more of broader range of the
interviewing experience.
26. Audience research plan
For my audience research I will be doing it by creating a questionnaire,
the questions that I will ask will be about age and gender, to see if
there is certain pattern in the answers colligating to the group they
identify with and to see which out of this group would be more likely to
watch my documentary.
27. Audience Research
Two thirds of people who answered my questionnaire were female, and a third of the people who answered
my questionnaire were male. This could affect the answers I will receive in my questionnaire since there is a
clear majority and there is no representation for non-binary people in the research.
28. Audience Research
Everyone who answered the questionnaire was within the target age range and tells me that the majority of
people who answered my questionnaire are younger and it should still be mature but be slight more engaging
for that group.
29. Audience Research
Everyone who answered the questionnaire research likes documentary’s this is a positive since its my project
plan and documentary’s have such a range and people will documentary’s they don’t really understand the
concept to be educated by it.
30. Audience Research
The true crime documentary’s they have a similarity to my project with the narrative aspect of them and are
laid out with a very linear structure. The other two which are interesting topics, I have named the project the
life of Bunny Bell this would interest people because f the strange name and its not clear on what it is about at
face value.
31. Audience Research
Two thirds of the people who answered my questionnaire didn’t like football, this is negative for my project
since it is about a footballer, but they could be more attracted the story aspect of the documentary and trying
to look at understand Bunny Bell.
32. Audience Research Overview
The positives of my audience research where I got valuable information
as well as, learning about the different ways people like documentary's
structure and he way they flow which I learn was a linear story format.
The negatives of my audience research where only 5 people answered
the research questions, so it wasn’t broad questionnaire which means
there would be a lot less diversity in the answers that I will receive from
the
33. Summary of Research
Initial Ideas:
Gives the foundation to base my work off and helps me plan how my project will come out as and
the styles I want to incorporate into my documentary.
Existing Products:
This shows other styles and what is expected in a footballer documentary and gives be basic look
what to base it off. Also looked at techniques I could potentially use in my production, I took most of
my information from a Netflix documentary and how they style the interview with the background
and the lighting, along with the editing, this would help me interview and creating the set in their
house.
Experiment:
The experiments have helped me realise the way I should work my questions, and that having more
time to prepare and plan the questions would make a better interview.
Audience Research:
Helps me see what my target audience would want to see in a documentary’s and how they like the
documentary to be structured.
