This document summarizes four manuscripts related to research on managing Faba bean root rot (Fusarium solani) in the highlands of northeastern Ethiopia. The first manuscript found that root rot was widely distributed and severity was influenced by soil type, land preparation, weed management, and season. Vertisols, flat sowing, high weeds, and wet soils increased incidence and severity. The second manuscript examined morphological and pathogenic variability of F. solani populations. The third and fourth manuscripts evaluated antagonistic effects of native Bacillus isolates and Trichoderma spp. against F. solani on faba beans. Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is one of the most important legumes used for food, feed and maintaining ecological balance. However, its productivity has been declining due to various biotic and abiotic factors. Arbuscular Mycorrhizal symbioses have been proved to enhance growth and yield responses of faba bean and other agricultural crops by counteracting these extreme factors. The study was conducted at field and greenhouse to evaluate the performance of faba bean genotypes for mycorrhizal colonization on two Phosphorus fertilizer levels. Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications was used. Analysis of variance indicated that all parameters, except number of mycorrhizal spores and relative mycorrhizal dependency, were highly significantly (p<0.01) varied for genotypes. Genotypes Wayu, Dosha, Didea, Moti and Tumsa for phosphorus fertilized; and Dagim, Gebelcho, Dosha, Tumsa and Wayu for unfertilized trial had performed better. Mycorrhizal colonization performance was higher on unfertilized than on P fertilized trial, at both field and greenhouse. Furthermore, for the genotypes tested at both conditions, the performance of the genotypes was higher at field than at greenhouse. The study also revealed that most of the mycorrhizal association parameters were highly correlated with biomass phosphorus uptake and grain yield of the faba bean genotypes.

Of all pulse crops grown in Ethiopia, faba beans stand 2nd after common beans and before chickpeas which are all considered to be the top export crops accounting 90% by volume and 85% total earnings. However, diseases such as chocolate spot, root rot and rust are the major biotic constraints affecting yield wherever the crop grows. Yield losses of up to 61% on susceptible cultivars and 30-50% under favorable conditions for chocolate spot were reported. Root rot was also recognized to cause complete crop loss during severe infections and yield loss may reach 100% in susceptible cultivars. Rust epidemics in addition identified to reduce faba bean yields with losses of up to 30%, while, in combination with chocolate spot, yield reductions of up to 50% have been reported. Control options for disease in general include high levels of resistant cultivars, planting good quality seed and fungicide applications integrated either with cropping system or early planting to manage faba bean chocolate spot. Integrated management was also reported to control faba bean root rot with the help of biocontrol agents. In this regard, soaking seeds in biocontrol agents (Bacillus megaterium and Trichoderma viride) and the use of Trichoderma harzianum as seed dressing or soil application with improved faba bean cultivars and fungicidal seed treatments consistently found to improve emergence and seed yield of faba bean. Artificially inoculated faba bean seedlings with the native antagonistic Bacillus isolates found to suppress black root rot. Integration of improved faba bean cultivars with protective fungicides application was also reported to gain higher monitory advantage. Similarly, faba bean-maize row intercropping and compost fertilization using host resistance and other crop management practices have found best to manage faba bean rust. In this review, developments discussed on management of chocolate
spot, root rot and rust of faba bean were focusing on an integrated management either through host resistance with cropping systems and fungicide applications or host resistance with biocontrol agents. However, almost all the earlier findings were mainly limited either to research stations or greenhouse and laboratory experiments. This is, therefore, the current review is initiated with the objective that future research works to explore these best practices under farmers’ field condition along with supplementation of greenhouse and laboratory experiments considering mass production of the locally identified indigenous biocontrol agents in particular for seed or soil borne diseases such as faba bean root rot.

Diversity of plant parasitic nematodes associated with common beans (Phaseolu...Innspub Net
Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are the most important legume staple food in Kenya coming second to maize. In Central Highlands of Kenya, the 0.4-0.5ton ha-1 output is below the genetic yield potential of 1.5-2ton ha-1 partly due pests and diseases. Plant parasitic nematodes (PPN) have been reported to cause yield losses of up to 60% on beans. Though bean production is important in the Central highlands of Kenya, information on PPN associated with the beans in the region is lacking. This study was therefore undertaken to establish the diversity of PPN associated with common beans and to assess the root knot nematode damage on beans in the region. The study covered 50 farms (32 in Kirinyaga and 18 in Embu Counties) distributed in eight localities namely Kibirigwi (L1), Makutano (L2), Kagio (L3), Mwea (L4) and Kutus (L5) in Kirinyaga County and Nembure (L6), Manyatta (L7) and Runyenjes (L8) in Embu County and covering three Agro Ecological Zones (AEZs); UM2 (L1, L2, L3 & L4), UM3 (L5, L7 & L8) and UM4 (L6) AEZs. Manyatta (L7) and Nembure (L6), had the highest and second highest gall indices, respectively, while Kibirigwi (L1), Makutano (L2) and Mwea (L4) had some of the lowest gall indices. The most common PPN in bean roots were Meloidogyne spp. Pratylenchus spp. and Scutellonema spp. with a frequency of 94.38%, 78.25% and 59.13%, respectively. This further confirm the importance of these nematodes in bean production systems. Upper Midland 3 (UM3) AEZs and UM4 had higher nematode population densities and diversity than UM2. Disease severity and nematode composition and distribution were notably low in the irrigated areas Kibirigwi, Kagio and Mwea compared to rain-fed areas such as Makutano, Nembure and Manyatta.

This poster presentation highlights the results gained from the experiment conducted at Rama, central zone of Tigray with the aim to screen different groundnut genotypes for their resistance to drought and natural aflatoxin contamination.
Field experiments were conducted to investigate the variations in sixteen maize genotypes in relation to drought tolerance. The experimental set up was subjected to drought stress after five weeks of planting for three weeks before data on morphological and yield characters of maize genotypes were obtained for three cropping years. Plant height and grain yield of Bodija yellow maize were the highest overall. There was a significant difference among genotypes for drought stress resistance and Bodija yellow maize showed the most tolerance, while TZBR Comp 1 – C1 S2 510 genotype was the least. First principal component axis (Prin 1) had the highest contribution to the variation of the morphological, yield and drought tolerance traits. Prin 1 was highly related to the morphological and yield characters more than to the drought resistance. Plant height was negatively and strongly correlated (p<0.01) with stem height, number of leaves, stem girth, leaf length, leaf width and week after planting, but negatively correlated with the drought resistance. Therefore, Bodija yellow maize should be considered as parent material in breeding for the development of drought tolerant traits in maize.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is a foodstuff that plays a very important role for the world population. In Côte d’Ivoire, its production is estimated at 6.5 million tons after yam. With a view to preserving the genetic diversity of the cassava collection of the National Centre for Agronomic Research, several research projects have been carried out on the characterization (morphological, agronomic) and health status (diseases and pests) of the cassava genetic resources conserved in the station. The present study consisted in analysing the composition and evolution of cassava genetic resources and assessing the incidence of diseases and pests in 727 cassava accessions in the collection of the National Centre for Agronomic Research. After analysis, the collection contained a total of 759 accessions of which 32 had disappeared. Of this total, 603 accessions or 83% of the total were from Côte d’Ivoire, 104 or 14% from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture and 20 accessions or 3% from various origins. Referring to time and different agronomic research structures, the cassava collection had 106 accessions from 1953 to 1981 for the Office for Scientific and Technical Research Overseas, 101 accessions from 1982 to 1998 for the Savannah Institute and 520 accessions from 1998 to 2019 for the National Centre for Agronomic Research. It was found that the accessions from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture were more resistant to virus than the accessions from the Côte d’Ivoire farmers’ environment. For mites, the attack was strong with 60% of the accessions.
Evaluation of Improved Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L) Varieties for Adaptation ...Premier Publishers
This study was carried out to evaluate and identify adapted improved cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.) (Fabaceae) varieties in southern tigray lowlands of Ethiopia. A field experiment was conducted during the 2016 and 2017 main cropping seasons using a randomized complete block design with three replications to evaluate three improved cowpea varieties for yield and yield related traits under rain-fed conditions at Mekoni Agricultural Research Center site and Kara Adisheho farmer’s field. Analysis of variance showed that all the traits measured were statistically significant at 5% level of probability except plant height. The earliest days to 90% maturity (79 days) were observed for the variety Kenkety, whereas the longest was recorded by bole variety (89.6 days). Similarly, Kenkety variety filled their seeds in a short period of time (25 days) compared to Assebot and Bole varieties (29; 32 days). The highest pooled mean grain yield was obtained from Kenkety variety (1958 kgha-1), while Assebot and Bole had the lowest yield of 1656 and 1481 kgha-1 respectively. When we see variety × location wise mean, still Kenkety variety outsmarts in both locations over the varieties and Kara Adisheho were suitable for cowpea production with (2128 kgha-1) grain yield. Taken as a whole, Kenkety variety over weights Assebot and Bole varieties especially for the two main traits of earliness and yield performance. Thus, Kenkety was promising variety for demonstration and scaling up activities in the agro ecology.

The potato (Solanum tuberosum) production in the Far North Region, Cameroon is confronted with, diseases and pests. To improve the production of this plant, a study was carried out in Mouvou and Gouria to evaluate the impact of fertilizers on the development of late blight and early blight diseases of this plant. The experimental design used was a completely randomized block with 4 treatments: Mycorrhizae (MYC), NPK (20-10-10) chemical fertilizers, chicken droppings (CD) and a control (T). The plant material used was a local variety of potato (Dosa). Disease incidence and severity and rainfall were evaluated. Area Under Disease Progress Curve was calculated. At 60 DAS, mean incidences recorded for fertilizers were 5.7, 3.6, 1.8 and 0.8 % respectively for control, MYC, NPK and CD. In general, early blight severity decreased from 22.1% at 45 DAS to 0.3 % at 60 DAS. The highest AUDPC value of late blight at Mouvou site was observed in NPK treatment while potato in CD treatment had the lowest. The lowest AUDPC value of early blight was observed in CD treatment at both sites. AUDSIPC value for late blight was significantly higher in NPK treatment in both sites. The highest value of AUDPSIC of early blight was recorded in MYC treatment, 45 DAS in both sites. The average rainfall was higher in the Gouria site (716.5mm) than in Mouvou site (679 mm). The CD treatment can be recommended to the farmers for the phytosanitary protection of potatoes.

Abstract
Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate and breed rice varieties for their yield ability and tolerance to biotic stresses, major abiotic of lowland ecologies in Benin and Togo.
Method: The plant material consisted of 1901 interspecific and intraspecific lines. The integration resistance test results (DITER) developed by NOTTEGHEM (1977) were used for this research. Individuals from different lineages were multiplied to form the seedling plots. The measured parameters focused on: Sowing cycle (SC), Height at maturity (Hm), Tillering (T30 and T60), drought, iron toxicity, dead hearts, and leaf blast. Data were taken on ten plants from each of the Disjunct Lines (DL) in Benin and Togo. The use of descriptive rating scales from the Standard Evaluation System for Rice (SES) developed by IRRI (2010) was used during this research.
Key Results: Families from crossings WAB 638-1 x TOG 5681, WAB 638-1 x NERICAL35 TOG 7442 x NERICA- L41, TOG 5681 x NERICA-L41, TOG 5681 x NERICA-L42 and belonging to O. glaberrima x O. sativa, O. sativa x interspecific, O. glaberrima x O. interspecific, interspecific x O. glaberrima showed good behavior with respect to biotic and abiotic stresses and have a good Sowing Cycle (<120jas) and a very good tillering (20-50Talles) in both Benin and Togo.
Conclusion: They therefore have a very good adaptability to the agro-ecological conditions of Benin (low slope) and Togo (minor bed).

Farm Nutrient Monitoring: A case of Wakiso District, Central Uganda.Dr. Joshua Zake
Soil fertility depletion is a major constraint for agricultural productivity under smallholder farming systems in sub-Saharan Africa.
The NUTMON toolbox was used to determine on-farm nutrient balances in Central Uganda to come up with plausible recommendations to advance increased soil productivity and household food security and incomes among smallholder farming systems in Wakiso district.
Farm balances for major nutrients (N, P, K) at crop level (Primary Production Units – PPU) for major crops i.e. banana, sweat potatoes, beans and maize were all negative during the monitoring period, thus indicating a net mining of nutrients through crop harvest.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Leguminosae) is a crop widely distributed in almost all parts of the world. In Ethiopia, common bean is cultivated for two main purposes namely as a source of protein for local consumption and for export. Mostly, it grows in the warm and lowland areas of the country. This experiment was conducted to identify, select and recommend adaptable, high yielding, as well as Insect pest and disease resistant released variety(ies) for major common bean producing areas mainly Kamashi zone and Mao-komo special Woreda of Benishangul gumuz regional state of Ethiopia. Sixteen varieties were evaluated in RCBD with three replications with plot size of 4m x 2.4m = 9.6m2 at Kamashi and Tongo (Mao-komo) testing sites of Assosa Agricultural Research Centre (AsRC) for two years (2013/14 and 2014/15) main cropping seasons. The result of ANOVA showed that there was a significant varietal difference (P< 0.001) in seed yield. The least seed yield per hectare was recorded for Argene variety (474 kg ha-1) and the highest grain yield for SER 125 variety (2220 kg ha-1) followed by SER 119 (2022 kg ha-1) SER 48 varieties (1891kg ha-1) and Nasir variety (1800 kg ha-1). SER 125, SER 119 and SER 48 varieties were performed well across both locations during the consecutive cropping seasons while Nasir variety has another quality of tolerating soil acidity which was the major problem in the western parts of the country including Assosa and western Oromia. Therefore, these varieties have to be promoted in farmer’s field for dissemination and scaling up.

complex and causes seedling blight and

Fusarium solani was shown to be the most
common and frequently isolated (73%)
pathogen from infected roots of faba bean
Others : F. oxysporium, R. bataticola, R.
solani, Alternaria spp., D. dipsaci and
unidentified fungi.
All faba bean fields surveyed in the two
cropping seasons were infested by root rot
and the prevalence was 100%.

weed management and the 2011 cropping season
Both root rot incidence and PSI were highly influenced by the soil
type, land preparation, weed management and season.
23. Root rot was widely distributed and a major
problem in the area today.
The incidence and severity of the disease varied
among the soil type, land preparation, weed
management practice and cropping season.
Logistic regression analyses indicated that
vertisols, flat sowing, high weed infestation and
high soil moisture were associated with the root
rot incidence and severity and had significant
contributions to the development of epidemics.

26. Fungal Isolations
Infected roots of faba bean plants were collected
from three major faba bean growing districts.
Segments of root portion of plants showing lesions
characteristics to F. solani infections were
disinfected and cultured on PDA.
Developing Fusarium colonies were sub-cultured on
PDA and pure cultures were maintained on PDA
slants at 4oC.
Colonies were sub-cultured on PDA and CLA and
isolation of F. solani were identified based on
morphological characteristics (Leslie and
Summerell 2006).

27. Cultural and morphological characteristics
Macroscopic and microscopic characteristics were
studied following the procedures described by
Lesilie and Summerell (2006).
Aerial mycelial texture, colony shape, obverse and
reverse colony color, radial growth and colony
margins were recorded (Hosen et al., 2010).
Radial growth rates of each isolate were estimated
from colony diameter measurement (mm).
Condial size (length and width), appearance of
chlamydospores and condial septations were
determined.

28. Pathogenic variability
The isolates of F. solani was tested in the
greenhouse using five released faba bean
cultivars namely
Degaga (R878-3),
Kussie (KUSE2-27-33),
Mesay (74TA12050x74TA236),
Selalle (Selale Kasim 91-13) and
Wayu (Wayu 89-5).

29. Cross infectivity
Cross infectivity tests of F. solani isolates
were carried out by isolating representative
F. solani isolates from faba bean, field pea,
lentil, grass pea and chickpea plants.
Each isolate was examined for their
pathogenicity in a growth chamber.

Using General Linear Modeling (GLM) procedure of
SAS® System for Windows Version 9.1 software (SAS
2004).
Severity ratings were normalized before analysis
using square root transformation.
Treatment means were separated using LSD test at
5% level of significance
Cluster analysis was used to determine the
relationship of the isolates based on cultural and
morphological characteristics and their virulence
on faba bean cultivars (Forina et al., 2002;
Mahmoud et al., 2007).

Macroconidia - predominantly 3-septae
but there were conidia with 2-4

index of the isolates ranged from
2 to 13%, indicating that isolates
varied considerably in their
pathogenicity.

The isolates of F. solani from faba bean and field
pea showed various degree of pathogenicity on all
tested cool-season food legumes.
In contrast, the pathogens isolated from chickpea,
lentil and grasspea did not infect faba bean and
field pea.
Isolates of F. solani from lentil and grasspea were
pathogenic on lentil and grasspea, while isolate
from chickpea did not infect the other pulses.

41. F. solani isolates showed high level of cultural,
morphological and pathogenic variability.
The existence of variation among F. solani
isolates in the area might be attributed due to
the difference in farming practices and env’tal
conditions.
Moreover, the occurrence of the broad genetic
diversity of faba bean in the country might hosts
diverse isolates of F. solani population.

Discussion
42. However, characterization of the pathogen
population based on morphological and
pathogenicity are not adequate enough to properly
distinguish different isolates of Fusarium pathogen.
Molecular techniques could overcome these
limitations and will characterize the genetic
variability of fungal population more precisely.
Information regarding the variability of F. solani
from this study will serve as baseline information on
the future prospects of breeding for root rot
resistance in faba bean in the highlands of Ethiopia.

Antagonistic effects of native Bacillus isolates against
root rot (Fusarium solani) on faba bean
Objective
To identify native Bacillus spp. and evaluate their
antagonistic effect in managing root rot on F. solani
pathogen.
44. Isolation
Isolations of antagonistic bacteria from health
faba bean roots and rhizosphere soil were done
using dilution technique (Watesman, 1922).
One ml of serially diluted suspension from both
soil and root dilutions were pipetted into King’ B
medium and Nutrient agar (NA) media.
Isolates of bacteria colonies were picked for
antagonism studies.

All Gram +ve, rod-shaped, catalase +ve, growing
at 45˚C and endospore forming bacteria were
identified as Bacillus isolates and were maintained
at 4˚C on slants of NA for further studies (Schaad
et al., 2001). .

Dual culture
Isolates of Bacillus spp. were tested for their
antagonist effects against F. solani.
Cultures were observed daily and data on growth
inhibition zone and colony diameter were
recorded.
The radii of the fungal colony towards and away
from the antagonistic colony were measured
Percent growth inhibition was calculated.
Spore Germination
The effect of culture filtrate of Bacillus isolates
on conidia germination of F. solani was evaluated
and spore germination percent were recorded. 46

Antagonist effect of Bacillus isolates were tested
on faba bean root rot development on faba bean
seedlings.
Root rot severity was scored on the roots and
hypocotyls using 0-4 rating scale (McFadden et al.,
1989)
Percentage of root rot suppression was calculated
(Villajuan-Abgona et al., 1996).

Using General Linear Modeling (GLM) procedure of
SAS® System for Windows Version 9.1 software (SAS
2004).
Severity ratings were normalized before analysis
using square root transformation.
Treatment means were separated using LSD test at

All isolates of the antagonists reduced mycelial
growth of the pathogen.
Significant differences (P≤0.05) were observed
among isolates on inhibiting the mycelial
growth and the inhibition effects of the
pathogen (Table 1)

The antagonist Bacillus isolates was able to inhibit
mycelia growth and clear inhibition zone were
formed between antagonists and pathogen.

Culture filtrates of Bacillus isolates significantly
(P≤0.05) reduced spore germination of F. solani.
As the culture filtrate concentration increase, the level
of germinated spores was reduced.
The germination of untreated (control) spores was
about 83.4%, while at 100% culture filtrate
concentration the lowest level of germination (9.9%),
with 88% reduction over the control.
53. Greenhouse experiment
Application of Bacillus antagonists as seed treatment
significantly (P ≤ 0.05) reduced root rot infection and
enhanced the height and biomass of bean seedlings as
in comparison to F. solani alone inoculated bean
seedlings (Table 3).

restricted the growth of the pathogen.
Bacillus isolates able to reduce spore germination of
F. solani pathogen at lower culture filtrate conce.
Effectiveness at low concentration is the indication
of the ideal characteristics of ideal antagonists.
Better overall growth of faba bean plants indicates
the efficacy of the antagonists in controlling faba
bean root rot.
Therefore, the selected antagonists suggests that it
is a promising biocontrol agent against the pathogen.

Evaluation of local isolates of Trichoderma spp. against root rot
(Fusarium solani) on faba bean
To identify local Trichoderma spp. and evaluate their
antagonistic effect in managing root rot on F. solani
pathogen.
Objective

Isolations of Trichoderma spp. from rhizosphere soil
were done using dilution technique (Watesman,
1922).
One ml of serially diluted suspension plated on PDA.
Isolates of Trichoderma colonies were picked for
antagonism studies.
Trichoderma isolates were identified based on their
conidial morphology, color and texture, and growth
characteristics (Kubicek and Harman, 2002)

Nine Trichoderma isolates could significantly inhibit the
colony growth of F. solani with the highest mycelial
growth inhibition percent, with more than 50% inhibition.

The antagonists inhibited the mycelial growth of F. solani
but could not overgrow the pathogen until 3 to 4 days.
However, five days later the Trichoderma were overgrew
the pathogen and occupied the medium.

64. Trichoderma isolates grow much faster and inhibited
the growth of F. solani pathogen, thus competing
efficiently for space and nutrients.
So that competition for limiting nutrients results in
biological control of fungal pathogens.
Subsequent profuse sporulation of Trichoderma and its
ability to over grow the pathogenmay indicate its
ability to directly parasitize the pathogen.
Better overall growth of faba bean plants indicates the
efficacy of the antagonists in controlling faba bean
root rot.

Discussion
65. Root rot is widely distributed and is a major problem
in most faba bean-growing areas of the NEH of
Ethiopia.
Vertisols, flat sowing, high weed infestation and high
soil moisture were associated with the development
of root rot epidemics.
Substantial pathogenic variability exists among
isolates of F. solani in the area.
Information regarding the variability of F. solani will
serve as baseline information on the future prospects
of breeding for root rot resistance in faba bean. 65
CONCLUSION
66. Development and use of resistant varieties require
exploration and a through understanding of the
variability of the pathogen.
Use of indigenous Bacillus and Trichoderma
species as a biopesticide in the control of F. solani
of faba bean is a promising natural biopesticide
and used as one of component of integrated
disease management strategy.

67. Root rot disease management measures that are
suitable for adoption by the small-scale farmers
are important.
Use of weed management and proper drainage
practice can reduce the risk of faba bean root rot.
Breeding for resistance to faba bean root rot
should be given high priority and should be
supported with good agronomic management
practices that do not favor disease epidemics.

RECOMMENDATION
68. Further investigation is required to develop
differential host varieties and reveal the full extent
of pathogenic variability across the country.
Still there is a need that the more aggressive strain
should be employed in cultivar screening. Developing
resistance genotypes using virulent isolates, together
with a mixture of isolates, in order to test the
disease interactions and select for faba bean
genotypes.
The relationship of stem nematodes to the root rot
of faba bean needs to be investigated in relation to
its role in root rot.

69. Biological control research should be directed
towards mass multiplication, formulation and mode
of delivery of these effective antagonistic isolates.
Field studies should be undertaken to confirm the
effectiveness of the antagonistic isolates under
natural conditions in the field as components of
integrated disease management.
