This document describes an experiment to determine how age affects the ability of the eyes to change focus between near and far distances. Younger subjects were able to switch focus more quickly with fewer mistakes than older subjects. The nine-year-old made few mistakes reading both near and far, while the fifty-one-year-old made no mistakes reading far but several reading near, suggesting a decline into near-sightedness with age. The results supported the hypothesis that older subjects would have weaker vision and more difficulty changing focus than younger subjects due to lens hardening and weakening eye muscles over time.
