Online Spatial Analysis for Spending Equity Mapping

The Philadelphia Water Department is leveraging GIS to create a billing system based on the amount of impervious surface cover on commercial properties. Stormwater billing based on impervious surface area both distributes the cost of managing stormwater more equitably and creates incentives for property owners to implement best management practices for mitigating stormwater runoff on-site. The bill calculation is performed using a series of GIS models assembled using ArcObjects, python scripts and a geoprocessing queuing system. The resulting datasets are then made available to Water Department customers via an ArcGIS Server application. In addition to searching and mapping, the application supports the billing appeals process and enables users to calculate the estimated financial benefits of implementing stormwater mitigation activities. This presentation will showcase the Philadelphia Water Department application and outline the benefits and challenges of using GIS technology for stormwater management and impervious surface area calculations in urban environments.

http://www.azavea.com/hunchlab This is a rather technical dive into the near repeat pattern analysis and load forecasting features that we've built into HunchLab. Both of these features are aimed at helping a law enforcement agency to better predict risk levels across their jurisdictions and allocate resources according. While no application of predictive analytics will be perfect, forecasting risk based on models of the past can help officers and analysts to anticipate the appropriate next steps. Near repeat pattern analysis helps officers quantify the risk that arises from multiple incidents happening close to one another in space and time. What we are quantifying is how the fact that your neighbor's house is burgled raises your risk of a burglary in the coming days and weeks. With load forecasting we are looking at cyclical temporal patterns in incidents. How does the time of year, time of day, and day of week change the levels of crime incidents that we should expect across a jurisdiction? By modeling these cyclical patterns we can project crime levels into the future, helping law enforcement agencies to allocate resources appropriately as well as better manage organizational accountability.

On Tuesday, June 12, we hosted "Exploring Community Engagement with OpenTreeMap," a webinar that provided an introduction to the public engagement features in OpenTreeMap, the open source system for collaborative tree inventory. Kelaine Vargas from Urban Forest Map and Phil Silva from TreeKIT joined us to discuss their experiences with community urban forestry initiatives, particularly in terms of the accuracy of citizen generated data and encouraging long-term engagement in tree care.

We also discussed how smartphones and tablet computers can be used in urban forestry projects. OpenTreeMap is a web-based system for collaborative, geography-enabled urban tree inventory. The mobile version of OpenTreeMap enables users to search, add, and edit tree information via their iPhones and Android devices.

Geoscientists increasingly need interdisciplinary teams to solve their research problems. Currently, geoscientists use Research Networking (RN) systems to connect with each other and find people of similar and dissimilar interests. As we shift to digitally mediated scholarship, we need innovative methods for scholarly communication. Formal methods for scholarly communication are undergoing vast transformation owing to the open-access movement and reproducible research. However, informal scholarly communication that takes place at professional society meetings and conferences, like AGU, has received limited research attention relying primarily on serendipitous interaction. The ResearchBit project aims to fundamentally improve informal methods of scholarly communication by leveraging the serendipitous interactions of researchers and making them more aware of co-located potential collaborators with mutual interests. This presentation will describe our preliminary hardware testing done at the Federation for Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Summer meeting this past July and the initial recommendation system design. The presentation will also cover the cultural shifts and hurdles to introducing new technology, the privacy concerns of tracking technology and how we are addressing those new issues.
