This document is a student project report on exhaust gas recirculation in two-wheeler engines. It summarizes that exhaust gas recirculation works by recirculating a portion of an engine's exhaust gas back into the cylinders to reduce nitric oxide emissions. It does this by lowering the peak combustion temperature since nitric oxide formation increases at high temperatures. The report concludes that exhaust gas recirculation is an effective and reliable method for reducing air pollution from vehicles and improving human health.

Re-circulated exhaust gas displaces fresh air entering the combustion chamber with carbon dioxide and water vapor present in engine exhaust. Abstract: To meet stringent vehicular exhaust emission norms worldwide, several exhaust pre-treatment and
post treatment techniques have been employed in modern engines. Also concern of environmental pollution and
energy crisis all over the world have caused the research attention on reduction of diesel engine exhaust
emissions and saving of energy simultaneously. This investigation mainly focuses on reducing exhaust emission
and energy saving by investigating diesel combustion with neat diesel fuel and a new attachment of pressurized
inlet air with Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. Experiment was conducted in a four stroke direct
injection water cooled constant speed diesel engine with pressurize inlet air attachment and EGR system, which
is typically used in agricultural farm machinery. EGR was applied to the experimental engine separately and
also with varying pressure of inlet air. In this study, compressor was used to pressurize the inlet air. The
experiments were carried out to experimentally evaluate the performance and emissions for combine effect
different EGR rates and varying inlet air pressure of the engine. Emissions of hydrocarbon (HC), NOx, carbon
monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and temperature of the exhaust gas were measured. Performance
parameters such as Brake thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) were calculated. It was
found that combined effect of pressurize inlet air attachment and EGR system provided better result on engine
performance than individual EGR effect. Reductions in NOx and exhaust gas temperature were observed but
emissions of HC, CO and CO2 were found to have increased with combine usage of EGR and inlet air pressure.
Thus the modified engine provides more NOx reduction and better fuel economy without reducing useful
characteristics (brake power, brake thermal efficiency etc) of the engine.

In the context of exhaustion of fossil fuels day by day due to heavy demand with the use of agriculture sector and transport sector, escalation of fuel prices in International Oil Market causing huge economic burden on developing countries like India and rise of pollution levels with fossil fuel, the conservation of fossil fuels has become pertinent. Gaseous fuels have many merits over liquid fuels, as the pollutants emitted by gaseous fuels are low due to clean combustion, high calorific value in comparison with liquid fuels. Vegetable oils are good substitutes for diesel, as they are renewable, comparable calorific value and cetane (measure of combustion quality) number when compared with neat diesel operation. However, the disadvantages associated with vegetable oils such as high viscosity and low volatility cause combustion problems in diesel engines. They can be rectified to some extent by converting them into biodiesel. They are many methods to induct gaseous fuels such as port injection, carburetion technique, injection of gaseous fuel at the near end of compression stroke etc. Investigations were carried out with Acetylene gas as primary fuel inducted by port injection and diesel was injected into the engine in conventional manner. Particulate matter (PM), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), carbon mono oxide (CO) levels and un-burnt hydro carbons (UBHC) are the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. They cause health hazards, once they are inhaled in. They also cause environmental effects like Green-house effect and Global Warming. Hence control of these emissions is an immediate effect and an urgent step. The pollutants of PM, NOx, CO and UBHC were determined at full load operation of the engine with varied injection pressure and compared with diesel operation on conventional engine. The maximum induction of Acetylene gas was 35% of total mass of diesel as full load operation. Particulate emissions were determined by AVL Smoke meter, while other emissions were measured by Netel Chromatograph multi-gas analyzer at full load operation. These pollutants were drastically reduced with induction of Acetylene gas and further reduced with an increase of injection pressure.

The consumption of fuel is increasing resulting in pollution of environment with smoke and NOx due to the
development in automobile and power sector. These emission contents smoke and NOx can be reduced by
adding additives with diesel fuel. As these additives are very costly and hence becomes unviable. These
additives decrease the performance of combustion.
Oxygenated compounds are most widely used among additives. The reason for this is the participation of
their oxygen in reactions leading to better combustion and hence lowering the emission contents the
molecular structure of the oxygen contents of additives directly influence on smoke reduction and the
oxygen concentration of the fuel flame also effects the emission specially Nitro paraffin compound
additives have high oxygen contents is then molecular structure. So we considered as oxygenated
additives.

Abstract Pollution is one major factor which affects the environment nowadays, resulting in green house effect and global warming. Suitable methods are introduced to increase the engine fuel economy and bring down the emissions within the tolerable limit. One way of doing it is by inducting oxygen into the combustion chamber since oxygen is a combustion enhancer the amount of oxygen entering into the combustion chamber if increased it would result in better engine performance and lower emissions. Oxygen can be inducted in the intake stroke by the help of an external source and mixing chamber is provided so that it helps in better mixing of air and supplementary oxygen. This additional increase of air will affects all parameters of the engine like operating temperature, fuel consumption, Brake power, emissions, and heat release but only fuel consumption and Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) alone is analyzed. Load test was conducted on a compression Ignition engine for various concentration of oxygen from (21% to 27%) with an interval of 2%. This experimental study shows better fuel economy and better brake specific fuel consumption but led to a very high percentage of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) emission and lower carbon monoxide (CO), hydro carbon (HC) emission. harmful. Engine without EGR are more pollutant & uses more atmospherically air for combustion. By
Implementation of EGR system in Engine, the Partial Exhaust Gas is re-circulated again in Engine. The
aim of this work is to review the potential of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to reduce the exhaust
emissions, particularly NOX emissions, and to delimit the application range of this technique. The
system is very much Eco Friendly. Using Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Technique in engines, the
emissions are very much controlled. This method is very reliable in terms of fuel consumption.
Space vector modulation (SVM) technique for CSC is established by dividing ac-side line current cycle into six sectors. Each sector is divided into certain number of space vector (SV) cycles. SV cycle is divided into three states, two active and one zero state. SVM technique generates fifth and seventh harmonics (HD5-7) in the CSC ac-side current when operated with low switching frequencies, i.e., low number of SV cycles. Minimal reduction in HD5-7 was achieved by using certain states sequence inside SV cycle, and by calculating states ON times at once in the middle of each SV cycle. In this paper, fuzzy logic-dependent technique for calculating states ON times in SVM-CSC is proposed.

3. ABSTRACT
• Every Human Welfare organisation in the world are looking
forward for some method to control pollution .
• When we discuss air pollution,the major contribution of
pollutants are from the automobile.
• Among the pollution control system available ,we found that a
system based on exhaust gas recirculation(EGR).
• We hope that prescribed system might be implemented in
motorcycles to be launched in future.
4. INTRODUCTION
• Major problem faced by today’s world is environmental pollution.
• For which, vehicular traffic is a major contributor.
• Exhaust gases from vehicles includes CO, CO2 ,HC ,Nox etc.
• Exhaust gas recirculation is a Nox (nitrogen oxide and nitrogen dioxide)
reduction technique used in S.I.engines
• Since the use of S.I.engines (i.e.two wheelers) is rapidly increasing in
this era,the implementation of this technique in two wheelers could be
a possible solution to reduce pollution.
5. PRINCIPLE OF EGR
• EGR works by recirculating a portion of an engine’s exhaust
gas back to the engine cylinders.
• The exhaust gas also increases the specific heat capacity of
the mix lowering the peak combustion temperature.
• Because Nox formation progresses much faster at high
temperatures, EGR serves to limit the generation of Nox.
• Nox is primarily formed when a mix of nitrogen and oxygen is
subjected to high temperatures.

8. CONCLUSION
• Using Exhaust Gas Recirculation Technique in engines, the
emissions are very much controlled due to lesser amounts of NOx
entering the atmosphere.
• Exhaust Gas Recirculation is a very simple method. It has proven to
be very useful and it is being modified further to attain better
standards.
• This method is very reliable in terms of fuel consumption
• EGR is the most effective method for reducing the nitrous oxide
emissions from the engine exhaust.
