Project Management, Nait Lrt Project
Abstract
The purpose of this research paper is to critically analyse the issues of delay in the NAIT LRT project.
This project was initiated on September 6, 2015, which was supposed to be in 2014. The key objective
of this research paper is to identify steps and activities that must be managed to avoid delays,
development problems due to unexpected risks and even monitoring the project. This study will
provide a brief analysis of the issues incurred in the failure of NAIT LRT project. This study
undertakes the information available on the journal articles, newspaper articles, online material, City
of Edmonton website and other news channel websites to explore the history and current position of
the project. Keywords: Project ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is formally known as the Metro Line. (Objective) The 3.3km division line was planned to run from
Churchill Square to NAIT linking MacEwan University, the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the new arena
and Kingsway Mall to the main LRT system. It was expected to add 13,200 weekday riders to the city
s LRT network. The objective of this project is to get the line open, subject to it being safe, as
described by city manager Simon Farbrother in an interview in Edmonton Journal. The construction
and designing of this extended Meto Line were predicted to cost (baseline cost) of $755 million. This
cost estimation includes the purchasing property and new LRVs. Sponsors of the NAIT LRT project
were the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada and City of Edmonton. The baseline
schedule and milestones of this project are mentioned in the appendix of this paper. Thales Computer
Based Train Control system are responsible for operating the NAIT LRT. While construction on the
$665 million (expected cost was $755 million) project was completed on schedule, there have been
issues incorporating the new Communication Based Train Control system with the current LRT
signalling system. Mario Peloquin, Vice President, Thales Rail Signalling Solutions Inc. says he
appreciates everyone s patience as crews work to complete the work. The current signalling system is
one of the reasons for the delay of this project. The communication lines include the

Phantom Of The Opera Essay
The Phantom of the Opera directed by Joel Schumacher is the 2004 adaptation of Andrew Lloyd
Webber s 1986 musical of the same name. The Phantom of the Opera stars Gerard Butler as the
Phantom, Emmy Rossum as Christine Daaé, and Patrick Wilson as Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny,
who are embroiled in a love triangle. The film was met with generally mixed and negative reviews:
Schumacher s use of mise en scène, cinematography and editing, as well as symbolism contributes to
the production of The Phantom of the Opera. The Phantom of the Opera centers on the Paris Opera
House which has over time become the Phantom s domain. Upon the news that the opera house has
been bought and is under new ownership, the Phantom demands that the new owners ... Show more

He then sequesters her and she willingly follows him into his underworld lair. Christine appears
mesmerized and intrigued by the Phantom and does nothing to escape, but rather sees him as her angel
of music. Trouble begins when the opera company refuses to give in to the Phantom s demands and
Raoul and Christine fall in love. The Phantom s jealous rage endangers the opera company, as well as
the lives of Raoul and Christine. His final demand is finally met when the opera company agrees to
put on the opera, Don Juan , which he was written specifically for Christine. During Don Juan s
performance, the Phantom infiltrates the production and kidnaps Christine one last time. Raoul risks
his life chasing after the Phantom and Christine. In the final showdown between Raoul and the
Phantom, Raoul is overtaken by the Phantom and Christine must choose which man she wants to be
with. In the end, the Phantom lets Christine and Raoul go. Though it is not shown that they lead a
happy life together, it is implied that they got married and had children as the final scene depicts
Raoul visiting his wife, Christine s, grave (Schumacher). Symbolism plays a major role in The
Phantom of the Opera. Christine is represented as being young and innocent. She is often depicted
wearing white. Unlike her predecessor, Carlotta, Christine does not appear to be interested in material
possessions. Much like the Phantom, Christine is an orphan

Debating the Human Contribution to Climate Change
Debating the Human Contribution to Climate Change
Debating the Human Contribution to Climate Change Global climate change is a hot point of
contention on an international scale. This subject went from ridicule, mockery, and doubt to massive
grassroots and nonprofit movements, heated debates, and media headlines. Though there exists
scientific research that dates back into the mid 20th century regarding impending climate change, the
subject was not take seriously by massive audiences until the 21st century. At first the debate over
global warming was whether or not it existed. The debate has evolved into whose fault is it and
strategies for counteracting or reversing the damage. The paper will provide a brief history of this
debate as well as a current understanding of both side of the argument. The paper aims to define ways
in which humanity both contributes and combats global climate change. As aforementioned, when
public figures such as former Vice President Al Gore began speaking publically regarding global
climate change, average people as well as experts professionals across fields, did not take these claims
seriously. As more scientific research was performed, evidence mounted that at least the Earth is in the
midst of an environmental change of global proportions. Once this shift in the issue occurred, the
debate became more about the precise nature of global warming (identifying markers) and the human
contribution to the situation. Some argue that humans

The World s Best Quality Shipping Port
More than 2,000 years ago, the Western Han Dynasty in ancient China was prosperous and people
wanted to expand to the west side of the county. The king sent one of his diplomat along with about
130 people to explore the west side of the country. They went as far as the middle east and the road
later on was named Silk Road, which represents that during that time, Chinese would carry their silk
and trade with other countries. This road was not only famous for its history but also famous for its
culture. It was the very first road that connected ancient China with other countries and it was the first
time cultures were introduced to one another. (Silk Road, 2017)

Surgical Treatment For Morbid Obesity Essay
In today s society where good looks, physical fitness, appearance, and good health are used to measure

People are so concerned with how other people view their physical appearance that when they cannot

Letters To Aztec Research Paper
Dear Mr. Cortez, you know how you asked me to research all about the Aztecs, to share with you?
Well here s what I have found out. When you come here, somethings may not make sense. Some
houses are bleached white, or have sun dried brick or stone, while others were tiny little huts with a
garden out back. This is the ranking for rich and poor, with the rich having stone, and the poor having
hut houses. You may see some people walking along the streets, and you must note who is who. Most
will presumably be carrying fruits and veggies, and wearing plain clothes that they had to create
themselves. Then there are the Nobles skipping down the street, and you will note that they are Nobles

He puts a noble in charge of each city. Each city is independent, but they all have the same laws.
Everyone knows each of these laws, and they are pretty harsh. Most involve them killing you. There
is, however a mercy rule or the forgiveness law. If a criminal confesses his crime to a priest before it is
found out, he is excused of all charges placed against him. This does come with a price; you may only
use the forgiveness law once. Next time you break the law, you will be punished. The government is
well organized, but they have problems with such a growing population. They need more food,
storehouses, temples, and clothing. The Aztecs are determining to go to war as their answer, as they
have already captured a tribe. If the tribe does not pay them a tribute in building, and food, they will
sacrifice the entire tribe to the Aztec gods. Like I said earlier, it is seldom that these soldiers have ever

Analysis Of The Film The Same Device
The same device is used by Fellini to flesh out his protagonist, Guido for the audience and much of
the film s attractiveness lies in the identification of the audience with him through the interior journey
that they take with him through his experiences, memories and fantasies which have made him what
he is and the state he finds himself at that time. Washizu s fearful reaction to Miki s ghost that he sees
during a banquet in the latter s honor which is the same time that he has him killed drives home the
point that there the struggle with the consequences of unethical actions is not so much external as it is
internal. Washizu s path to the lordship of Spider s Web castle is littered with blood and dead bodies.

Desire or ambition should, therefore, be tempered, keeping this truth in mind. This is also conveyed
through the opening and closing shots of the mist and the castle ruins, symbols of impermanence with
a choir singing in the Noh style: Look upon the ruins of the castle of delusion; Haunted only now by
the spirits of those who perished; A scene of carnage, born of consuming desire; Never changing, now
and throughout eternity. Pertinently, this means that men and their creations will come and go, but
their desire remains constant, consuming all in its wake. As such, whether it is Macbeth in
Shakespeare s play or Washizu in Throne of Blood, the consequences of unbridled, avaricious and
unethical desire will always have the same effect through all human history and the ruins of Spider s
Web Castle stand as one testament to this everlasting truth. In the banquet sequence, the lesson about

An Inspirational Rite Of Passage
In the prime age of sixteen, I felt an inspirational rite of passage. My endurance through Drivers Ed
guaranteed me my license which I wanted desperately. Furthermore, my father had permitted me to
drive his white 2002 Dodge Ram truck; and after eleven years of its existence, its appearance was still
flawless and shattered anything in its way. While driving it, I felt invincible, so invincible I could
jump over any hurtle, obstacle, you name it. I intentionally found reasons to drive it like: going to the
store, the bank, visiting family members, and of course hanging out with my friends. In the early
spring of 2013, I was returning home from eating lunch with my hilarious friend, Wade, at Rupes, the
best burger joint in town. My foot all the way on the gas petal, my left hand out the window, and my
eyes on the road was my last good memory before it happened.
At the speed of 45 between the intersecting of Rich Lane and University Street, my eyes were flashed
by the bursting sunlight from my rearview mirror. My depth perception was rattled by my tainted
eyes, and I could not readjust them back in order before blinking. After a brief moment, I finally
attuned my eyes and I gathered that I drifted closer to the right side of the road. Likewise out of the
corner of my right eye, I notice a strange object fifteen feet headed to the right of the truck. I focused
more upon the black object before it disappeared out of my sight and departed underneath the hood of
the truck. It was

Watership Down by Richard Adams
Different people can interpret most, if not all movies differently. This difference of opinion can lead to
countless debates that will go on until the end of time. This is with all movies including moves that are
intended for the younger audience. Children s movies usually have different themes that will fly right
over a child s head and only be noticed by the adults watching. Whether it is just a pop culture joke or
reference or a major theme in the film, they are intended to keep the adult audience engaged and
thinking. In 1978 Nepenthe Productions released the animated film, Watership Down, based off of the
1972 book of the same title written by Richard Adams. Through the eyes of a child the movie was non
other than a film about a group of rabbits escaping their home, which is being destroyed, in hopes of
finding a new place to reside. You may want to believe this movie is just about rabbits, but through the
eyes of an adult this movie has a very different meaning. The use of animals in children s movies to
make a film kid friendly has been done for years. This is one reason why the rabbits are so effective in
telling this tale. Rabbits are cute cuddly animals that present no threat or danger. Kids love bunnies
and long to have them as pets. If I was a parent at the release of Watership Down, I would think the
movie was just a film about rabbits and think, how much harm can it cause? After watching Watership
Down for the first time I came to the conclusion that this is

The Monroe Doctrine And The Modern Framework For American...
Intended as an annual message to Congress in 1823, President James Monroe s speech, The Monroe
Doctrine, evolved into the modern framework for American domestic affairs. Monroe s proposed
domestic policy was the President s way of attempting to secure The United States newly acquired
land. Not even a decade after the War of 1812 was resolved, many Americans were concerned when it
came to United States involvement in foreign wars. This unsettlement in America was largely due to a
controlling and tyrannical British rule that continuously restricted the United States until the treaty of
Ghent was signed in 1814. Despite this uneasiness within the young nation, the basic ideas that
Monroe addressed to Congress in 1823 were not given much significance. However, many
contemporary historians would consider The Monroe Doctrine to be one of the most cherished
principles of American foreign policy (Tindall and Shi 320). These historians would likely argue to
say that Monroe s ideas to keep European forces out of the United States, to refrain from getting the
American army involved in foreign wars, and to restrict the United States from imperializing with
existing European colonies created an enduring policy for the future of America.
With the help of Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, James Monroe was able to give a convincing
oration to Congress that would effectively structure foreign affairs for generations to come (Monroe
278). To begin his speech, Monroe warns Congress

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Budweiser s Friends Are Waiting

that could be affected should they choose to drive drunk. Budweiser has pulled on the heartstrings of
many through the bond of love and friendship between a man and his dog. The company uses strong

saying, Welcome home buddy. From there, we watch the two grow up together. They spend their days

night when the owner goes out with some friends to have a good time. The camera is focused on the
case of beer one of the owner s friends is holding, implying that the group will be drinking. What
happens next is what affects the audience most, giving the commercial its strong pathos. The dog is
seen staring out the window, waiting patiently for his best friend to return to him. The waiting
continues all night long and Budweiser takes this opportunity to pause from the commercial and
display the words, For some, the waiting never ended. But we can change that. When the words exit
the screen the owner returns to his home, hugs his dog, and says, Hey! I m sorry. I decided I shouldn t

Paradox Of Grief
One of the themes that that we covered in lecture is grief, including the different types of grief that
people experience, and the ways in which people learn to deal with grief. In life, we will all
experience the death of someone close to us at one point in our lives. Because their death may be very
hard on us, grieving will help us get through our daily lives and help us heal from this pain. Everyone
responds to a loss in their lives in different ways, depending on the type of person he/she is and the
cause of death of their loved one. When we experience a difficult loss in our lives, we respond by
grieving and learning to accept this loss. According to Kastenbaum, there are many types of grief,
including: normal and complicated grief, anticipatory grief, resolved and unresolved grief, and hidden
and disenfranchised grief. Specifically, Kastenbaum explains how grief should be resolved within a
reasonable period of time, but at the same time, the loss of a crucial relationship is never completely
resolved: we move on with our lives, but we will never be the same again (Kastenbaum, 350). This

yet death involves a new life, even gain (Lecture, May 16). This also relates to Lucky s situation

and gain from her experiences. Through grieving for her mother s death, Lucky was able to find her

Felix Mendelssohn Essay
Felix Mendelssohn is a well known German composer, pianist and organist of the early Romantic Era.
At a very young age, Felix Mendelssohn quickly established himself as a musical prodigy and is now
studied by people across the world. What many do not know is that Felix had an older sister who was
also a musical prodigy; however, unfortunately, she does not get the same credit as her older brother.
Due to the gender politics of this time, women who performed after the age of one who should be
married were looked at negatively in society. Women were meant to serve their husbands and take care
of the children, not to compose or perform at musical venues. Pieces from both Songs without Words
composed by Felix Mendelssohn and Das Jahr composed by Fanny Mendelssohn have so many
similarities. When taking a closer look at Felix s compositional work, it is sometimes
indistinguishable to the works of Fanny. Felix and Fanny were only four years apart, influencing them

Sociology and Social Structure
Social structure is the way society is organized into predictable relationships. There are five elements
when you break down social structure. The first being status. We usually associate having a status to
the amount of influence, wealth and fame. But sociologists use the term status to refer to any of the
full range of socially defined positions within a large group or society, from the lowest to the highest.
Examples of this are being a son or daughter, dental technician or the president of the United States.
Sociologists also see some status to be achieved or ascribed and an ascribed status is when a person is

How Has Shogun Tokugawa Made The Isolation Of Japan...
It was during the Edo period, also known as the Tokugawa period (1600 1868) when Japan made the
decision to isolate itself from the rest of the world. The Japanese believed any contact with the outside
world would contaminate and disrupt their strictly organized society, which was why they limited their
contact with other civilizations. This period of isolation led to many factors such as, no warfare or
exchange with other countries. This also meant that there was not any influence from different
cultures, knowledge, or economy. For most of the Edo period, Japan was a peaceful place with happy
people. Japan accomplished something no other country had, which was staying at the same state for
more than 250 years. This is why Shogun Tokugawa made the Exclusion Laws, for he saw the
foreigners as a threat to his power, authority, and military control. ... Show more content on

The law also worked the other way, no one out. If someone left Japan, under almost no circumstance
would that person be able to come back, for fear of bringing back new technology, cultures, and ideas.
The Shogun also decided to put in place a law that no big ships were to dock at the Island. Ships that
had tried to dock, were destroyed and the people on it were lucky they were kept hostages, to say the
least. They were extremely lucky if they did not destroy the boat and were simply forced to leave. The

A Research Study On Data Collection Method
Data Collection Method:
Because quantitative research is decided as the research strategy, data collection seems to be key
factor. Survey is the traditional way to collect the data (Vogt, 2010). In order to collect the quantitative
data, questionnaire is considered as one of the most effective ways to make the survey that is defined
as a set of questions, the main function of which is to collect the relevant data or information from
individuals (Mukherjee, 1995). Self completion questionnaire is a type of the questionnaire, which
offers a steady way for the respondents to answer the questions, as a result of which, the collected data
will usually be correct and it will provide the enough data support to test the hypothesis of the
research (Hill, Brierley MacDougall, 2003). Thus, the self completion type is determined as the major
type of the questionnaire, which will be utilized in this research project. Because Chinese consumers
behavior is required to be analyzed, the questionnaire will be put on the Internet platform and mainly
relies on Chinese Weibo and Wecat both of which are the famous online communication platforms in
China and can be seen as western Facebook . At the same time, it will be an easier and faster way to
get Chinese respondents answers from these two platforms that is one reason why questionnaire is
used and these platforms are depended. Another reason is that questionnaire can widen the numbers of
the respondents through utilizing of the

The Attack Of Osama Bin Laden And The Al Qaeda Essay
The War The government s response to the September 11, 2001 events was quick and decisive.
Government officials attributed responsibility for the attack to Osama bin Laden and the Al Qaeda
organization. One result was an announced policy shift from deterrence to preemption, generally
referred to as the Bush Doctrine. (National Security Strategy,
[http://www.whitehouse.gov/nsc/nss.html].) Given the potential consequences of terrorist attacks
employing weapons of mass destruction, government decision makers felt that the nation could not
afford to sit back, wait for attacks to occur, and then respond. The nation was mobilized; combating
terrorism and crippling Al Qaeda became top national priorities. The use of military force against
different terrorist groups and infrastructure gained increasing acceptance in Government policy
circles. In addition, a February 14, 2003, National Strategy for Combating Terrorism
[http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/02/20030214 7.html] gave more emphasis to the role
of international cooperation, law enforcement and economic development in countering terrorism. A
full scale campaign was launched, using all elements of national and international power, to go after
the group Al Qaeda and its affiliates and support structures. The campaign involved rallying the
international community, especially law enforcement and intelligence components, to shut down all Al
Qaeda cells and financial networks. A U.S. military operation was launched in

Second Language Acquisition on Children
Second Language Acquisition and Age Impact on its Acquisition
Ika Ulil M
20111111042
Abstract
Children acquire language since they were born. They communicate with their parents. Furthermore,
children and parents interact with each other using a language that we often call the first language or
mother tongue. At an early age, children are only learning one language that is the mother tongue. By
age and speech development, children improve to acquire a second language from the school or the
environment around them. In terms of speed of langgauge acquisition, children are factorized by both
the child and the child s learning environment. Therefore, it is important to understand how children
acquire second language. This paper is provided ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When discussing about In other words , Bialystok and Hakuta state that there is some thought that
children who may appear to be learning a second languge very quickly at a vey young age (before the
age of 5). They further state that accompanied by the loss of their first language, have really replaced
the first language with the second language. 3. Models for Second Language Acquisition
Some linguistic models try to explain the development of second language acquisition. The three most
common models are (1) the Universal Grammar Model, (2) the Competition Model, and (3) the
Monitor Model. The Universal Grammar Model refers to the system of principles, conditions, and
rules that are properties or elements of all human languages. At the same time, each language has
grammatical rules that vary from one language to another. Thus, Chomky states that different
languages have a limited possibility of different grammatical structures (1975). Therefore, second
language learners base their second language acquisition on universal principles common to all
languages, and on the force of the particular rules of each language. All of those can be concluded that
as a human, especially as children, we have vary form of rules in language, in this case is second
language. The Competition Model is based in the assumption that forms of natural language are
created to communicate. Thus, second language learners are faced with the conflict between

immense challenge of keeping a job. In addition, Careful medication is required to treat sickle cell
pain due to the frequent need to change drugs and the addictive nature of some substances used to
reduce pain. Therefore, managing such a condition in the current pain management environment can
be highly tasking to physicians and patients.

Management and Assumptions
Assumption based planning in project management is a post planning method, that helps companies to
deal with uncertainty. It is used to identify the most important assumptions in a company s business
plans, test these assumptions and think of hedging actions and what if scenarios. Conventional
business planning methods operate on the premise that managers can extrapolate future results from a
well understood base of information from the past. However, for new businesses and projects this way
of planning often does not comply. Most of the time there is no past knowledge and if there s any past
knowledge available, predicting the future out of it is nearly impossible. The dilemma is that corporate
planning techniques often presume more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What are we going to do if we re not certain about the size of the market by the end of September next
year? We assume that there the product is not very sensitive to the consumer price, how can we show
that we re right? Sometimes the mere identification of assumptions immediately leads to a change in
the business plan. It is for that reason that ABP should be strongly interwoven into the whole business
planning process. Implicit and explicit assumptions Assumptions according to Wikipedia are
propositions that are assumed, i.e., treated within the context of a discussion as if it were known to be
true or false . But although the Wikipedia definition of an assumption is correct, a better definition of
assumptions in the context of business planning and ABP is given by RAND. An assumption is an
assertion about some characteristic of the future that underlies the current operations or plans of an
organization There are multiple types of assumptions. The most known derivation is between implicit
and explicit assumptions. Another classification used in ABP is the derivation between primary and
secondary assumptions. This latter categorization is discussed in the Critical assumption planning
Wiki. The two classifications are not mutually exclusive; this means that an assumption can be both an
explicit and a primary assumption, while another assumption can be implicitly derived. Explicit
assumptions are assumptions of which the

step and why each step is critical in this process will also be explained. The omission of a step, no
matter how small, could negatively impact the financial security of a business. The four basic financial
statements and why they are important will be the final segment in discussing the full accounting
cycle.
The point of the accounting cycle is to gather all financial information for a company within a certain

the adjusted trial balance. The financial statements are a formal representation of the financial success
and position of the business and shows how this position has grown or depleted over time. Now you
will journalize and post the closing entries. These entries are created at the end of the specific
accounting period and transfers the account balances of temporary accounts to permanent accounts.
Last but not least, you will prepare the post closing trial balance. This is the process in which you list

permanent accounts. The purpose of preparing a post closing trial balance is to be certain that all
balances of debits and credits are equal in order for the next accounting cycle to begin effectively and

steps proceeding will have incorrect values. The entire process will need to be recalculated if this error

Australia Trade and Immigration Background As Joycelyn has mentioned Australia s having greater

The Effect of Legalizing Prostitution on the Economy
The Effect of Legalizing Prostitution on the Economy
Our Nation has been under immense fire lately. This is mainly because Americas Government is over

danger of creating a double dip recession. Jobs are nowhere in sight. People continue to get laid off
and even worse people who have been laid off are losing their unemployment benefit. The
unemployment rate is through the roof and nobody can find a job to support their families. Because of
this banks are failing, houses are being foreclosed on and the American Dream is becoming further

What we need to do is create jobs and create a more creative way to tax people to obtain the funds
needed to pay down the national debt. Why is the national debt so important? Because everyday our
dollar becomes worth less and less on the global market. And the more this keeps happening more the
United States globally economy begins to be hindered instead of just nationally within its own
borders. Legalizing prostitution is not something that is going to happen overnight and I m not saying
that it should be either. There are a lot of things that need to be ironed out. And legalizing prostitution
does not make our country corrupt. We would no longer have to have people hanging out on a street
corner in promiscuous outfits; it could become a tasteful business. Think of the crime that we could
eliminate in areas such as Las Vegas and Atlantic City. This could even help create a rebirth for
Atlantic City which has slowly been going under since the recession began. Our ultimate goal as a
country is to avoid a depression like that of 1929. We need to pull ourselves together and be the mega
country in the global economy. We should create a new faith in people with their jobs, home, banks
and overall government. We can t have people questioning government tactics but rather stand as one
and support every decision. And when people say that legalizing prostitution is not a good idea,

Analysis Of Shakespeare s Richard IIi
The Roles of Women in Richard III
Shakespeare s plays often share some of the same themes: greed, guilt, good and evil, unrequited or
forbidden love. Perhaps the most overlooked theme is the plight of women in the time of Shakespeare.
In a notoriously patriarchal part of history, the role of women was taboo subject matter; however,
Shakespeare had no qualms about commenting on the female condition in his works. In his play
Richard III, Shakespeare very clearly details the ways in which women suffer and their options for
handling it. The women in the play are some of the few characters left after power hungry Richard
slaughters everyone in his path to the crown, and Shakespeare ingeniously incorporates the
powerlessness of women into this complicated power struggle. In his play Richard III, Shakespeare
uses his female characters to convey Richard s talent for manipulation, foreshadow the hardships of
other characters, and, after they cultivate their desire for vengeance, uses them to ultimately strip
Richard of the same abilities he possessed earlier in the play.
Shakespeare is able to initially portray Richard s skillful manipulation tactics through his interaction
with Lady Anne in Act I, Scene ii, when he exploits her heightened emotions and machinates an
agreement of marriage from her. In this scene, Lady Anne is in a funeral procession for her dead father
in law; she is also, more importantly, wailing a lament for said dead father in law. She mourns him in

Persuasive Essay On Domestic Violence
There are many topics that people do not like to talk about, topics that cause discomfort or are seen as
taboo. However, as much as people wish to not talk about it, it doesn t mean the topic doesn t exist.
Domestic violence is one of the worst things committed on a daily basis, yet is only seen behind
closed doors. In the public service announcement against domestic violence, It Rarely Stops presented
by the National Domestic Violence Hotline, the organization s use of pathos is more clearly
established than ethos or logos. The ad is much less than informative than others, but it sends a clear
message and provides a solution to the problem that is abusive relationships. Although there isn t
much, the public service announcement does present some sort of appeal to ethos. By the National
Domestic Violence Hotline presenting an announcement over the topic of domestic violence, it deems
them a legitimate source. Not only has the hotline received calls from over 2 million victims or
observers of abusive relationships, but they have gathered information on what the first signs of
domestic violence looks like, which is the focus of the announcement. If another organization such as
the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline created an ad on domestic violence, it might send a good
message, but their evidence could be incorrect, and viewers might not take them seriously since the ad
is not in the focus of their organization. The National Domestic Violence Hotline presents an ad that

The Justifications Of Prison And Punishment
The area this dissertation will be focusing on is the justifications of prison and punishment, and
looking at whether these objectives are being achieved today in the current prisonsystem, with a
thorough analysis of short sentences.
In order to analyse this, short sentences will be looked at to discover whether the prison system is
working.
Throughout history, punishment has always had to be justified. For example, pre 19th century,
punishment, which included being sent to the gallows or being placed in the stocks, had the
justification of being a deterrent, as punishment was a very public event (BBC, 2012). This type of
punishment was then met with Petitions against executions and torture increased in the eighteenth
century (Poster, 1984), and as a result of these petitions, theorists such as Beccaria (1764) spoke of
creating a punishment that removed the element of torture. Foucault (1975) spoke of the moving of
punishment from the body to the mind, in order to present the prospect that their acts would that their
acts would cause more pain than pleasure so that, as rational beings, they would avoid committing
illegalities in the first place (Poster, 1984).
Prison has therefore been justified since the Gladstone Report (Departmental Committee on
Prisons,1895), which set the tone for penal policy, stating that prison would have a deterrent function;
there would also be a rehabilitative ideal about prison. The objectives of prison, as described by
Jewkes et al

Factors Affecting The Human Capacity
Introduction:
The experiment involves test subjects with different heights blowing into same elasticity balloons in
one breath to discover if there are any correlations between human s vital capacity and height. This
experiment is categorized as biology as vital capacity is due to lungs and lungs are organs in a human
body. Vital capacity is the amount of air that can be forcibly expelled from the lungs after breathing in
as deeply as possible. The vital capacity is about 4,800 mL (4.8L) for an average human, which is the
total amount of air that can be expired after fully inhaling. The vital capacity is= approximately 80
percent of total lung capacity. = Tidal volume + inspiratory reserve volume + expiratory reserve
volume The total lung capacity (TLC) is the volume of air contained in the lungs after maximal
inspiration plus residual volume and for an average male is around 6000ml (6L). To remain a fair test,
many factors could affect one s vital capacity. Pregnancy for woman would decreases her vital
capacity as during pregnancy the diaphragm is compressed by the uterus, which decreases total lung
capacity. Pulmonary diseases such as asthma, Bronchitis, Common Cold, Lung cancer and other
diseases can also affect vital capacity. Asthma restricts the airway allowing less air to pass through to
their lungs which unable their lungs to stretch as much. Previous researches has shown woodwind and
digeridoo players have larger lung capacity due to their experience and

Review Of How To Read Literature Like A Professor Chapter 10
Journal Entry 6:
Chapter 10 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor is called Never Stand Next to the Hero. This
chapter claims that character s deaths are important plot devices. Foster made a great point of saying
how readers become emotionally attached to characters in books. He makes to point that characters
aren t real people. They re not people because they have never existed. I mean, have you ever met one
on the street? Characters are simply an outline made by the author and the reader coloring in that
outline to make the character what they want it to be. Foster also pushed the point across that the main
character can t ever die in the beginning or middle of the book. If the main character dies, what s the
point of the book ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And Other Ironies . This chapter s claim is Irony trumps everything. What Foster means by this is that
trumping everything, irony doesn t eliminate other layers of meaning. Rather, irony relies on these
other layers of meaning: symbolic, archetypal, intertextual, or otherwise and then overthrows them by
converting them into the ironic mode. In Animal Farm a lot of dramatic irony takes place. The animals
think that they remember Major s words that had become the Seven Commandments, but their
illiteracy causes them to be unsure. The animals never had to deal with human beings, never had to
engage in trade, and they never had to make use of money. All the animals remembered passing such
resolutions (or at least they thought they did.) The reader doesn t forget what the original rules were
and even if that happened they could go back in the story and look for themselves, while the animals
in the book couldn t. The animal s forgetfulness is an example of dramatic irony. Dramatic irony gives
the reader information that one or more of the characters does not know, thereby, creating incongruous
dialogue. Illiteracy becomes a problem for the animals again when they cheerfully bid Boxer, the
hardworking horse, goodbye, thinking that he is going to a veterinary hospital for treatment. The
animals crowded round the van. Good bye, Boxer! they chorused,

Education And The Current System Of Teaching
In the history of education, there are many events and people which one could say are the most
important in the development of the current systems of teaching. Here, I have put together a summary
of five such monumental events and influential people which I consider the most important regarding
schooling and education in the U.S.. Starting with the first establishment of higher education in the
U.S., Harvard University, and the first public library, set up in 1698 in South Carolina, and the
evolution controversy, which has been ongoing since 1925, and significant figures including John
Locke, and Christian von Wolff, the following text describes their importance to the current workings
of public school systems in the U.S..
The Massachusetts Bay Colony is responsible for putting into place the first institute of higher
education in the U.S., beginning with nine students in 1836 (History | Harvard University). I believe
this to be an important step in the educational history of the U.S. because today, we have many post
secondary institutions, and the normalization of such education is important. It is evident that it is
being normalized, as Harvard University started with only nine students and nowadays has more than
20,000 students aiming for a degree (History | Harvard University). In 1690, John Locke, a
philosopher and political theorist, as well as a teacher at the University of Oxford, published an essay
titled the Essay Concerning Human Understanding (Connolly). In it,

Patients With Large Common Bile Duct Stones
This prospective study was performed on 124 patients with large common bile duct stones ( 1 cm)
between August 2014 and August 2016. Our exclusion criteria included: age less than 18 years,
patients with contraindication to ERCP (history of contrast dye anaphylaxis, severe cardiopulmonary
disease, and recent myocardial infarction), acute pancreatitis or cholangitis at the time of the
procedure, previous history of ES, concomitant cholangiocarcinona or stricture, or intrahepatic duct
stone.
Patients were randomly assigned to either EPLBD group or ES group after confirming the presence of
large bile duct stones during the initial ERCP. The simple randomization was conducted by means of
random number created in Microsoft Office Excel 2007. The endoscopists were blinded before
confirming CBD stones during the initial ERCP. If biliary cannulation failed or precut was done
during the initial ERCP, the patients were excluded.
The medical ethical committee of our medical centers approved the study protocol and all patients
provided written informed consent before entering the study. All patients subjected to complete
assessment including proper history, clinical examination, laboratory investigations (complete blood
count, liver and renal function tests, blood sugar, and serum amylase), and imaging studies
(ultrasonography and/or CT, MRCP).
All ERCP procedures were performed by experienced endoscopists using the standard duodenoscope
(ED 3440T and ED 3485T, Pentax) in the

Black Diamonds Research Paper
There is nothing like the feeling of rushing down the slopes with the wind blowing by and the sun
shining down, as the landscape of the mountains outstretches before you. While traversing the frigid
ridge can be an exhilarating refuge from the routine of normal life, there are certain things that must
be known about the difficulty of the slopes. It is better to focus on the splendor of it all rather than
worry about making it down safely. To make slopes easier to identify, they are categorized by colors
and shapes that correspond with the difficulty of the terrain. American identifications group terrain
into four classes; green circles, blue squares, black diamonds, and double black diamonds.
Green circles are gentle beginner level slopes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These vary greatly in terrain and obstacles and can be found in many places. They tend to be on the
back side of the mountain, but getting to them is where it really varies. You may take an old hidden ski
lift, or come off a main lift to hike up a steep incline to get to the riskiest slopes. Black diamonds are
not for beginners, as they are almost always steep and quite narrow. You will find obstacles on these,
whether it be rocks or bumps, sharp turns, or through trees. Tree runs could be a category of their own.
The trees could be closely knit, or sparsely placed. It may be a narrow singular path, or might be
untouched completely. It s important to take turns if you re going with a group of people, which is a
smart choice to make sure you won t get lost on your own. This is because it s quite easy to fall or get
stuck, so you may need help. While all of these are great, my favorite run is a drop off. This is a
vertical drop about five feet down, followed by a steep, powdery, challenging run. These are ones that
you almost always have to hike to, and the most dangerous slope requires a hike up a very steep
incline. These are the only slopes I haven t been on, and are extremely steep, narrow, one person at a
time runs. Black diamonds are not meant for beginners, and you should not go on them unless you
know how to traverse something like

Queene Quotes In Queenie
Queenie
Nelson Mandela once said, No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or
his background, or his religion. Instead, it is the surrounding environment and its people that teach
prejudice and discrimination. An example of the transmission of xenophobia from parents to an
impressionable child appears in the text, Queenie .
Queenie is a prologue to the novel, Small Island by Andrea Levy from 2004. The story takes places in
England shortly after World War I. The storyline follows a girl, Queenie, attending the Empire
Exhibition with her parents and two employees. She is the protagonist of the story, and the story is
written from her point of view with a first person narrator. Therefore, her viewpoints and ... Show

One of the new things that she does try, however, is the tea from Ceylon. This is most likely because
tea re minds her of the British culture. When Queenie wonders about the dots of the Indian women s
foreheads, the mother stops Queenie from asking in case the dots meant they were ill and con tagious.
This shows that when the mother faces something unknown she immediately pre sumes the worst
instead of turning curios and adventurous like Queenie.
Graham and Emily, the family s employees, are accompanying the family at the exhibition. They are
completely absorbed in each other and seem to consider Queenie as a burden be cause they have to
follow her around. During the encounter with the black man Emily and Graham act childish and
teasingly push Queenie towards the man, cheering kiss him, kiss him. Not once do they consider that
the man might be able to speak and understand English. Earlier in the text, Graham also says, She can

The Negative Effects Of Juvenile Incarceration
In the past, there have been many concerns surrounding the issue of juvenile incarceration. As per the
history, there have been many cases where the effect of the incarnation of young people has been seen
to have very many negative effects. Research that has been conducted in the past has identified the
fact that incarceration has many negative effects than it was previously thought. Some of them include
the effect it has on the mental health of the inmates as well as the little effect it has in rehabilitating the
inmates (Barnert, Perry, Morris, 2016). All this has led to people being more encouraged to look for
alternatives of helping those involved to reform.
As for the economic reasons, it has over the years been proven that it is very expensive to maintain a
large number of inmates as well as hold them for long. This is a fact that has come down on both the
federal as well as the state governments that are responsible for the maintaining of the well being of
the different correctional facilities. By reducing the number of inmates in these facilities, the
governments can lower the costs incurred in the long term and hence promote the use of the same
funds in reforming the people in other ways.
Alternatives to Incarceration
There are a number of substitutes that can be considered to be alternatives to incarceration in helping
to reform the people involved. The first of this is probation which is a period ordered by the court that
an offender is under the supervision

Eleanor Conflict
During High School a teen goes through a lot of conflict with many different people. Eleanor, a
character in the book Eleanor and Park , is a great example of what some teens are going through
today. Eleanor is forced to sit next to Park, a kid that reads comics and listens to punk, on the first day
of school. They both could not be any more different. It also doesn t help that she is over the average
weight and is made fun of at school for her looks. And with Eleanor struggling with her home life and
her step dad Richie, Park becomes a safe spot for Eleanor. Richie is very protective of what goes on in
his house so when he finds out about both of them together, it s not good. But Eleanor eventually finds
a way to deal with everything and leave some things behind. The first example of how Eleanor grows
is a result of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One piece of evidence that supports this is when Eleanor and Park first meet. Eleanor is struggling to
find a seat on the bus. As the bus driver is yelling at her to sit down, everybody on the bus is staring at
her. A couple of people in the back are bickering about her and making fun. But eventually Park
unwillingly lets her sit down next to him. Eleanor couldn t tell if the Asian kid who finally let her sit
down was one of them, or whether he was just really stupid (Rowell11). Eleanor is confused as to why
Park let her sit down. She wonders if he is one of the bullies based on how he yelled and sweared at
her to sit down. Or, if he is just really dumb. This shows that Eleanor grows as a result of conflicts
with Park because she develops a feeling for Park. It may not be a good feeling or good first
impression, but he is the only one that let her sit down. A second piece of evidence that supports this is
when Park gives Eleanor a comic for the first time. They were both sitting on the bus

The Beatles Hey Jude Poetic Techniques
The Beatles, Hey Jude manipulates the verse bridge structure until the coda, where the chorus finally
appears. This is different to all the other songs I have analysed, since September, Cry Me A River and
Heart Of Gold have a verse chorus form. Also, one difference between this song and the other songs is
that it is in a Major key (F Major), and the rest of the songs are in a Minor Key. The Major key helps
to create to the clear, and confident style to the song, which is represented in this song. This song is
the only song to include an extremely complex structure, containing interludes between each verse and
bridge. This something none of the other songs include.
Led Zeppelin s, Stairway To Heaven, contains a call and response between the 12 string and the
telecaster Electric Guitar in the solo of this song, this is widely used in rock music, and works so
successfully in this song as it helps to create suspense and movement within the music. In my opinion
it appears to represent two people calling out to each other expressing their feelings. Another song has

An example of the rhyming within the song, that first captured my ears, is using the title September
and rhyming it with remember and pretender . This helps to create a balanced structure to the lyrics,
which will make it easier for the listener to remember. Metaphors and rhyming are also used within
the song, like for example our hearts were ringing your heart can t actually ring, but it s a way of
describing the way the two people felt about each other in that moment of time. The following line In
the key that our souls are singing , Here, he rhymes ringing with singing at the end of the line. This
adds to the light hearted catchiness of the song and makes it all the more memorable to the

How Did Al Capone Impact Society
During the period of prohibition, from 1920 to 1933, the sale, manufacture and transportation of
alcohol was made illegal, through the Volstead act of 1919, leading to the first and only time an
Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was repealed. Throughout this time in American history
gangsters were common and were constantly increasing in every city but one in particular stood out
from all the others making a significant impact on American history. Scarface, Alphonse Capone or
more commonly known as Al Capone; who was the most infamous gangster, taking advantage of the
era of Prohibition, ran an organized crime association in Chicago during the 1920s. He was
responsible for over 500 murders; he had 700 men under his control and earned $60 million a year for
bootlegging. Capone, who was glamorised in media and shown as charitable to the helpless was also
controlling and violent and became an iconic figure of the successful American gangster who insisted
he was just supplying the public demand .
As Al Capone was such a controversy his significance, the interpretations of how he made an impact
on American lives, culture and politics and how he was remembered at the time and remembered
today varies greatly between different people.
Capone helped many vulnerable Americans, especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

TEACHING NOTE
op yo Arley Merchandise Corporation
Objectives and Synopsis
The Arley Merchandise Corporation represents an example of a corporate issuer attempting to realize
a higher price for its common shares by offering potential investors a money back guarantee. In this
instance, the guarantee takes the form of a European put option (called a Right in the case) which is
exercisable two years from the date of issue.
In some ways, the case represents an example of the design of a security to overcome information
asymmetries in the capital markets. Arley s management has projected a highly confident picture to
the underwriters that the company s future profit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The unit proposed for sale in the Arley financing then can be characterized as the sale of a share of
common stock plus a two year European put option with a strike price of $8 or, alternatively, through
put call parity, as the sale of a two year zero coupon note with face value $8 plus a two year European
call option on common stock with an exercise price of $8. Thus, the value of the unit can be broken
down in two ways: tC
Market value of the unit
= Market value of stock + market value of put option
= Market value of zero coupon bond + market value of call option
No
Applying the Black Scholes model with a two year riskless rate of 11% per annum, an initial stock
price of $6.50, and a volatility of 40% (as indicated in the assignment question), yields values of the
put and call options of $1.44 and $1.45, respectively.1 Exhibit 4 shows historical volatility data for
comparable firms. The instructor can engage the students in a discussion of how to use this
information in the analysis. The Appendix to this teaching note contains a discussion of these
comparables and sensitivity analysis. However, Black Scholes is not necessarily applicable because of
default risk associated with this particular put option. That is, put option holders will wish to exercise
their right to receive cash at precisely the time that Arley s stock is low, which is also when the firm
will least be able to fund the $8

External Environment
Introduction Business environment is an element that will affect all the activities of an organization.
Besides, it will bring firms both opportunities and threats because of its uncertainties. Business
environment is uncertain, complex dynamics; organization should apply more flexibility discontinuity
ways to manage them. A firm cannot control the environment because it is unpredictable in its
direction and speed of change, such as interest rates, rate of inflation and exchange rate. Business
environment can classifies in two categories that are internal environment and external environment.

interest rates and taxation both within particular countries and internationally; fluctuations in capital
markets; broad changes in market demand; industrial trends like increasing industry concentration and
increased mergers and acquisitions activity. All businesses are affected by economical factors
nationally and globally. Whether an economy is in a boom, recession or recovery will also affect
consumer confidence and behavior. A truly global player has to be aware of economic conditions
across all borders and ensure they employ strategies and tactics that their protects their business An
example: In the early 1990 s when the UK economy was in a slump, and businesses were folding

strategy of cutting back on labour costs, and doubling advertising expenditure. The companies?theory

  • 2. Project Management, Nait Lrt Project Abstract The purpose of this research paper is to critically analyse the issues of delay in the NAIT LRT project. This project was initiated on September 6, 2015, which was supposed to be in 2014. The key objective of this research paper is to identify steps and activities that must be managed to avoid delays, development problems due to unexpected risks and even monitoring the project. This study will provide a brief analysis of the issues incurred in the failure of NAIT LRT project. This study undertakes the information available on the journal articles, newspaper articles, online material, City of Edmonton website and other news channel websites to explore the history and current position of the project. Keywords: Project ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is formally known as the Metro Line. (Objective) The 3.3km division line was planned to run from Churchill Square to NAIT linking MacEwan University, the Royal Alexandra Hospital, the new arena and Kingsway Mall to the main LRT system. It was expected to add 13,200 weekday riders to the city s LRT network. The objective of this project is to get the line open, subject to it being safe, as described by city manager Simon Farbrother in an interview in Edmonton Journal. The construction and designing of this extended Meto Line were predicted to cost (baseline cost) of $755 million. This cost estimation includes the purchasing property and new LRVs. Sponsors of the NAIT LRT project were the Government of Alberta, the Government of Canada and City of Edmonton. The paper will provide a brief history of this debate as well as a current understanding of both side of the argument. The paper aims to define ways in which humanity both contributes and combats global climate change. As aforementioned, when public figures such as former Vice President Al Gore began speaking publically regarding global climate change, average people as well as experts professionals across fields, did not take these claims seriously. As more scientific research was performed, evidence mounted that at least the Earth is in the midst of an environmental change of global proportions. Once this shift in the issue occurred, the debate became more about the precise nature of global warming (identifying markers) and the human contribution to the situation. Some argue that humans ... This difference of opinion can lead to countless debates that will go on until the end of time. This is with all movies including moves that are intended for the younger audience. Children s movies usually have different themes that will fly right over a child s head and only be noticed by the adults watching. Whether it is just a pop culture joke or reference or a major theme in the film, they are intended to keep the adult audience engaged and thinking. In 1978 Nepenthe Productions released the animated film, Watership Down, based off of the 1972 book of the same title written by Richard Adams. Through the eyes of a child the movie was non other than a film about a group of rabbits escaping their home, which is being destroyed, in hopes of finding a new place to reside. You may want to believe this movie is just about rabbits, but through the eyes of an adult this movie has a very different meaning. The use of animals in children s movies to make a film kid friendly has been done for years. This is one reason why the rabbits are so effective in telling this tale. Rabbits are cute cuddly animals that present no threat or danger. Kids love bunnies and long to have them as pets. • 15. The Monroe Doctrine And The Modern Framework For American... Intended as an annual message to Congress in 1823, President James Monroe s speech, The Monroe Doctrine, evolved into the modern framework for American domestic affairs. Monroe s proposed domestic policy was the President s way of attempting to secure The United States newly acquired land. Not even a decade after the War of 1812 was resolved, many Americans were concerned when it came to United States involvement in foreign wars. This unsettlement in America was largely due to a controlling and tyrannical British rule that continuously restricted the United States until the treaty of Ghent was signed in 1814. Despite this uneasiness within the young nation, the basic ideas that Monroe addressed to Congress in 1823 were not given much significance. However, many contemporary historians would consider The Monroe Doctrine to be one of the most cherished principles of American foreign policy (Tindall and Shi 320). These historians would likely argue to say that Monroe s ideas to keep European forces out of the United States, to refrain from getting the American army involved in foreign wars, and to restrict the United States from imperializing with existing European colonies created an enduring policy for the future of America. With the help of Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, James Monroe was able to give a convincing oration to Congress that would effectively structure foreign affairs for generations to come (Monroe 278). Paradox Of Grief One of the themes that that we covered in lecture is grief, including the different types of grief that people experience, and the ways in which people learn to deal with grief. In life, we will all experience the death of someone close to us at one point in our lives. Because their death may be very hard on us, grieving will help us get through our daily lives and help us heal from this pain. Everyone responds to a loss in their lives in different ways, depending on the type of person he/she is and the cause of death of their loved one. When we experience a difficult loss in our lives, we respond by grieving and learning to accept this loss. According to Kastenbaum, there are many types of grief, including: normal and complicated grief, anticipatory grief, resolved and unresolved grief, and hidden and disenfranchised grief. Specifically, Kastenbaum explains how grief should be resolved within a reasonable period of time, but at the same time, the loss of a crucial relationship is never completely resolved: we move on with our lives, but we will never be the same again (Kastenbaum, 350). • 24. A Research Study On Data Collection Method Data Collection Method: Because quantitative research is decided as the research strategy, data collection seems to be key factor. Survey is the traditional way to collect the data (Vogt, 2010). In order to collect the quantitative data, questionnaire is considered as one of the most effective ways to make the survey that is defined as a set of questions, the main function of which is to collect the relevant data or information from individuals (Mukherjee, 1995). Self completion questionnaire is a type of the questionnaire, which offers a steady way for the respondents to answer the questions, as a result of which, the collected data will usually be correct and it will provide the enough data support to test the hypothesis of the research (Hill, Brierley MacDougall, 2003). Thus, the self completion type is determined as the major type of the questionnaire, which will be utilized in this research project. Because Chinese consumers behavior is required to be analyzed, the questionnaire will be put on the Internet platform and mainly relies on Chinese Weibo and Wecat both of which are the famous online communication platforms in China and can be seen as western Facebook . • 25. The Attack Of Osama Bin Laden And The Al Qaeda Essay The War The government s response to the September 11, 2001 events was quick and decisive. Government officials attributed responsibility for the attack to Osama bin Laden and the Al Qaeda organization. One result was an announced policy shift from deterrence to preemption, generally referred to as the Bush Doctrine. (National Security Strategy, [http://www.whitehouse.gov/nsc/nss.html].) Given the potential consequences of terrorist attacks employing weapons of mass destruction, government decision makers felt that the nation could not afford to sit back, wait for attacks to occur, and then respond. The nation was mobilized; combating terrorism and crippling Al Qaeda became top national priorities. The use of military force against different terrorist groups and infrastructure gained increasing acceptance in Government policy circles. In addition, a February 14, 2003, National Strategy for Combating Terrorism [http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/02/20030214 7.html] gave more emphasis to the role of international cooperation, law enforcement and economic development in countering terrorism. A full scale campaign was launched, using all elements of national and international power, to go after the group Al Qaeda and its affiliates and support structures. The campaign involved rallying the international community, especially law enforcement and intelligence components, to shut down all Al Qaeda cells and financial networks. They communicate with their parents. Furthermore, children and parents interact with each other using a language that we often call the first language or mother tongue. At an early age, children are only learning one language that is the mother tongue. By age and speech development, children improve to acquire a second language from the school or the environment around them. In terms of speed of langgauge acquisition, children are factorized by both the child and the child s learning environment. Models for Second Language Acquisition Some linguistic models try to explain the development of second language acquisition. The three most common models are (1) the Universal Grammar Model, (2) the Competition Model, and (3) the Monitor Model. The Universal Grammar Model refers to the system of principles, conditions, and rules that are properties or elements of all human languages. At the same time, each language has grammatical rules that vary from one language to another. Thus, Chomky states that different languages have a limited possibility of different grammatical structures (1975). Therefore, second language learners base their second language acquisition on universal principles common to all languages, and on the force of the particular rules of each language. All of those can be concluded that as a human, especially as children, we have vary form of rules in language, in this case is second language. The Competition Model is based in the assumption that forms of natural language are created to communicate. Thus, second language learners are faced with the conflict between ... It is used to identify the most important assumptions in a company s business plans, test these assumptions and think of hedging actions and what if scenarios. Conventional business planning methods operate on the premise that managers can extrapolate future results from a well understood base of information from the past. An assumption is an assertion about some characteristic of the future that underlies the current operations or plans of an organization There are multiple types of assumptions. The most known derivation is between implicit and explicit assumptions. Another classification used in ABP is the derivation between primary and secondary assumptions. Legalizing prostitution is not something that is going to happen overnight and I m not saying that it should be either. There are a lot of things that need to be ironed out. • 34. Analysis Of Shakespeare s Richard IIi The Roles of Women in Richard III Shakespeare s plays often share some of the same themes: greed, guilt, good and evil, unrequited or forbidden love. Perhaps the most overlooked theme is the plight of women in the time of Shakespeare. In a notoriously patriarchal part of history, the role of women was taboo subject matter; however, Shakespeare had no qualms about commenting on the female condition in his works. In his play Richard III, Shakespeare very clearly details the ways in which women suffer and their options for handling it. The women in the play are some of the few characters left after power hungry Richard slaughters everyone in his path to the crown, and Shakespeare ingeniously incorporates the powerlessness of women into this complicated power struggle. In his play Richard III, Shakespeare uses his female characters to convey Richard s talent for manipulation, foreshadow the hardships of other characters, and, after they cultivate their desire for vengeance, uses them to ultimately strip Richard of the same abilities he possessed earlier in the play. Shakespeare is able to initially portray Richard s skillful manipulation tactics through his interaction with Lady Anne in Act I, Scene ii, when he exploits her heightened emotions and machinates an agreement of marriage from her. In this scene, Lady Anne is in a funeral procession for her dead father in law; she is also, more importantly, wailing a lament for said dead father in law. She mourns him in an elevated ... In the public service announcement against domestic violence, It Rarely Stops presented by the National Domestic Violence Hotline, the organization s use of pathos is more clearly established than ethos or logos. • 36. The Justifications Of Prison And Punishment The area this dissertation will be focusing on is the justifications of prison and punishment, and looking at whether these objectives are being achieved today in the current prisonsystem, with a thorough analysis of short sentences. In order to analyse this, short sentences will be looked at to discover whether the prison system is working. Throughout history, punishment has always had to be justified. For example, pre 19th century, punishment, which included being sent to the gallows or being placed in the stocks, had the justification of being a deterrent, as punishment was a very public event (BBC, 2012). This type of punishment was then met with Petitions against executions and torture increased in the eighteenth century (Poster, 1984), and as a result of these petitions, theorists such as Beccaria (1764) spoke of creating a punishment that removed the element of torture. Foucault (1975) spoke of the moving of punishment from the body to the mind, in order to present the prospect that their acts would that their acts would cause more pain than pleasure so that, as rational beings, they would avoid committing illegalities in the first place (Poster, 1984). Prison has therefore been justified since the Gladstone Report (Departmental Committee on Prisons,1895), which set the tone for penal policy, stating that prison would have a deterrent function; there would also be a rehabilitative ideal about prison. Factors Affecting The Human Capacity Introduction: The experiment involves test subjects with different heights blowing into same elasticity balloons in one breath to discover if there are any correlations between human s vital capacity and height. This experiment is categorized as biology as vital capacity is due to lungs and lungs are organs in a human body. Vital capacity is the amount of air that can be forcibly expelled from the lungs after breathing in as deeply as possible. The vital capacity is about 4,800 mL (4.8L) for an average human, which is the total amount of air that can be expired after fully inhaling. The vital capacity is= approximately 80 percent of total lung capacity. = Tidal volume + inspiratory reserve volume + expiratory reserve volume The total lung capacity (TLC) is the volume of air contained in the lungs after maximal inspiration plus residual volume and for an average male is around 6000ml (6L). To remain a fair test, many factors could affect one s vital capacity. Pregnancy for woman would decreases her vital capacity as during pregnancy the diaphragm is compressed by the uterus, which decreases total lung capacity. Pulmonary diseases such as asthma, Bronchitis, Common Cold, Lung cancer and other diseases can also affect vital capacity. He makes to point that characters aren t real people. They re not people because they have never existed. I mean, have you ever met one on the street? Characters are simply an outline made by the author and the reader coloring in that outline to make the character what they want it to be. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... And Other Ironies . This chapter s claim is Irony trumps everything. What Foster means by this is that trumping everything, irony doesn t eliminate other layers of meaning. Rather, irony relies on these other layers of meaning: symbolic, archetypal, intertextual, or otherwise and then overthrows them by converting them into the ironic mode. In Animal Farm a lot of dramatic irony takes place. The animals think that they remember Major s words that had become the Seven Commandments, but their illiteracy causes them to be unsure. The animals never had to deal with human beings, never had to engage in trade, and they never had to make use of money. All the animals remembered passing such resolutions (or at least they thought they did.) The reader doesn t forget what the original rules were and even if that happened they could go back in the story and look for themselves, while the animals in the book couldn t. The animal s forgetfulness is an example of dramatic irony. Dramatic irony gives the reader information that one or more of the characters does not know, thereby, creating incongruous dialogue. Illiteracy becomes a problem for the animals again when they cheerfully bid Boxer, the hardworking horse, goodbye, thinking that he is going to a veterinary hospital for treatment. Here, I have put together a summary of five such monumental events and influential people which I consider the most important regarding schooling and education in the U.S.. Starting with the first establishment of higher education in the U.S., Harvard University, and the first public library, set up in 1698 in South Carolina, and the evolution controversy, which has been ongoing since 1925, and significant figures including John Locke, and Christian von Wolff, the following text describes their importance to the current workings of public school systems in the U.S.. The Massachusetts Bay Colony is responsible for putting into place the first institute of higher education in the U.S., beginning with nine students in 1836 (History | Harvard University). This is because it s quite easy to fall or get stuck, so you may need help. While all of these are great, my favorite run is a drop off. This is a vertical drop about five feet down, followed by a steep, powdery, challenging run. These are ones that you almost always have to hike to, and the most dangerous slope requires a hike up a very steep incline. These are the only slopes I haven t been on, and are extremely steep, narrow, one person at a time runs. Black diamonds are not meant for beginners, and you should not go on them unless you know how to traverse something like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Queene Quotes In Queenie Queenie Nelson Mandela once said, No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. Instead, it is the surrounding environment and its people that teach prejudice and discrimination. An example of the transmission of xenophobia from parents to an impressionable child appears in the text, Queenie . Queenie is a prologue to the novel, Small Island by Andrea Levy from 2004. The story takes places in England shortly after World War I. The storyline follows a girl, Queenie, attending the Empire Exhibition with her parents and two employees. She is the protagonist of the story, and the story is written from her point of view with a first person narrator. Therefore, her viewpoints and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the new things that she does try, however, is the tea from Ceylon. This is most likely because tea re minds her of the British culture. When Queenie wonders about the dots of the Indian women s foreheads, the mother stops Queenie from asking in case the dots meant they were ill and con tagious. This shows that when the mother faces something unknown she immediately pre sumes the worst instead of turning curios and adventurous like Queenie. Graham and Emily, the family s employees, are accompanying the family at the exhibition. They are completely absorbed in each other and seem to consider Queenie as a burden be cause they have to follow her around. During the encounter with the black man Emily and Graham act childish and teasingly push Queenie towards the man, cheering kiss him, kiss him. • 44. The Negative Effects Of Juvenile Incarceration In the past, there have been many concerns surrounding the issue of juvenile incarceration. As per the history, there have been many cases where the effect of the incarnation of young people has been seen to have very many negative effects. Research that has been conducted in the past has identified the fact that incarceration has many negative effects than it was previously thought. Some of them include the effect it has on the mental health of the inmates as well as the little effect it has in rehabilitating the inmates (Barnert, Perry, Morris, 2016). All this has led to people being more encouraged to look for alternatives of helping those involved to reform. As for the economic reasons, it has over the years been proven that it is very expensive to maintain a large number of inmates as well as hold them for long. This is a fact that has come down on both the federal as well as the state governments that are responsible for the maintaining of the well being of the different correctional facilities. By reducing the number of inmates in these facilities, the governments can lower the costs incurred in the long term and hence promote the use of the same funds in reforming the people in other ways. Alternatives to Incarceration There are a number of substitutes that can be considered to be alternatives to incarceration in helping to reform the people involved. The first of this is probation which is a period ordered by the court that an offender is under the supervision ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Eleanor Conflict During High School a teen goes through a lot of conflict with many different people. Eleanor, a character in the book Eleanor and Park , is a great example of what some teens are going through today. Eleanor is forced to sit next to Park, a kid that reads comics and listens to punk, on the first day of school. They both could not be any more different. It also doesn t help that she is over the average weight and is made fun of at school for her looks. And with Eleanor struggling with her home life and her step dad Richie, Park becomes a safe spot for Eleanor. Richie is very protective of what goes on in his house so when he finds out about both of them together, it s not good. But Eleanor eventually finds a way to deal with everything and leave some things behind. The first example of how Eleanor grows is a result of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One piece of evidence that supports this is when Eleanor and Park first meet. Eleanor is struggling to find a seat on the bus. As the bus driver is yelling at her to sit down, everybody on the bus is staring at her. A couple of people in the back are bickering about her and making fun. But eventually Park unwillingly lets her sit down next to him. Eleanor couldn t tell if the Asian kid who finally let her sit down was one of them, or whether he was just really stupid (Rowell11). Eleanor is confused as to why Park let her sit down. She wonders if he is one of the bullies based on how he yelled and sweared at her to sit down. Or, if he is just really dumb. This shows that Eleanor grows as a result of conflicts with Park because she develops a feeling for Park. It may not be a good feeling or good first impression, but he is the only one that let her sit down. A second piece of evidence that supports this is when Park gives Eleanor a comic for the first time. They were both sitting on the bus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Beatles Hey Jude Poetic Techniques The Beatles, Hey Jude manipulates the verse bridge structure until the coda, where the chorus finally appears. This is different to all the other songs I have analysed, since September, Cry Me A River and Heart Of Gold have a verse chorus form. Also, one difference between this song and the other songs is that it is in a Major key (F Major), and the rest of the songs are in a Minor Key. The Major key helps to create to the clear, and confident style to the song, which is represented in this song. This song is the only song to include an extremely complex structure, containing interludes between each verse and bridge. This something none of the other songs include. Led Zeppelin s, Stairway To Heaven, contains a call and response between the 12 string and the telecaster Electric Guitar in the solo of this song, this is widely used in rock music, and works so successfully in this song as it helps to create suspense and movement within the music. In my opinion it appears to represent two people calling out to each other expressing their feelings. Another song has uses call and response ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An example of the rhyming within the song, that first captured my ears, is using the title September and rhyming it with remember and pretender . This helps to create a balanced structure to the lyrics, which will make it easier for the listener to remember. Metaphors and rhyming are also used within the song, like for example our hearts were ringing your heart can t actually ring, but it s a way of describing the way the two people felt about each other in that moment of time. The following line In the key that our souls are singing , Here, he rhymes ringing with singing at the end of the line. How Did Al Capone Impact Society During the period of prohibition, from 1920 to 1933, the sale, manufacture and transportation of alcohol was made illegal, through the Volstead act of 1919, leading to the first and only time an Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was repealed. Throughout this time in American history gangsters were common and were constantly increasing in every city but one in particular stood out from all the others making a significant impact on American history. Scarface, Alphonse Capone or more commonly known as Al Capone; who was the most infamous gangster, taking advantage of the era of Prohibition, ran an organized crime association in Chicago during the 1920s. He was responsible for over 500 murders; he had 700 men under his control and earned $60 million a year for bootlegging. Capone, who was glamorised in media and shown as charitable to the helpless was also controlling and violent and became an iconic figure of the successful American gangster who insisted he was just supplying the public demand . JANUARY 29, 2004 TEACHING NOTE op yo Arley Merchandise Corporation Objectives and Synopsis The Arley Merchandise Corporation represents an example of a corporate issuer attempting to realize a higher price for its common shares by offering potential investors a money back guarantee. In this instance, the guarantee takes the form of a European put option (called a Right in the case) which is exercisable two years from the date of issue. In some ways, the case represents an example of the design of a security to overcome information asymmetries in the capital markets. Arley s management has projected a highly confident picture to the underwriters that the company s future profit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The unit proposed for sale in the Arley financing then can be characterized as the sale of a share of common stock plus a two year European put option with a strike price of $8 or, alternatively, through put call parity, as the sale of a two year zero coupon note with face value $8 plus a two year European call option on common stock with an exercise price of $8. Thus, the value of the unit can be broken down in two ways: tC Market value of the unit = Market value of stock + market value of put option = Market value of zero coupon bond + market value of call option No Applying the Black Scholes model with a two year riskless rate of 11% per annum, an initial stock price of $6.50, and a volatility of 40% (as indicated in the assignment question), yields values of the put and call options of $1.44 and $1.45, respectively.1 Exhibit 4 shows historical volatility data for comparable firms. The instructor can engage the students in a discussion of how to use this information in the analysis. The Appendix to this teaching note contains a discussion of these comparables and sensitivity analysis. However, Black Scholes is not necessarily applicable because of default risk associated with this particular put option. That is, put option holders will wish to exercise their right to receive cash at precisely the time that Arley s stock is low, which is also when the firm will least be able to fund the $8
