Something Old, Something New, Something Bold, Something Cool: A Marriage of T...NASIG

For the past several years, many libraries have been developing institutional repositories to house their open access publishing efforts to both showcase and preserve their faculty’s research. Some of those same libraries have been building sizable digital collections, often built from digitized versions of materials in their special collections.
So what happens when you put these two groups together? The University of South Florida Tampa Library did exactly that by creating a new Digital Scholarship Services unit. The union of these two groups has created new synergies between staff in complementary areas of the library, as we combine unique skill sets from each group to offer new services to the faculty.
This presentation will discuss why this change was made, examine some of the benefits and growing pains of this change, and showcase some of the unusual projects that have resulted. For example, a group of faculty from the College of Education has a multimodal project featuring new methodological approaches for analyzing various formats such as websites, images, and film. The library also has two research associates who are archaeologists creating three dimensional representations of artifacts for cultural heritage preservation that are now embedded with metadata in the repository. Creating such collections not only highlights the university’s work but provides materials professors can use to enhance their course curricula and use technology to engage students in new and innovative ways.

Memory institutions have built up expertise and taken the lead in all aspects of digital humanities, especially the development and implementation of digital methods for the capture, analysis and dissemination of archives and special collections, including manuscripts. In recent years, these initiatives have become embedded into Digital Humanities Initiatives, Centres and Programmes within research libraries, adding value to the existing relationships between libraries and scholarly iniatiatives. These activities have fostered the development of new projects that bring into collaboration the skills and expertise of academics, librarians, and digital humanists, making the Library increasingly a “digital research infrastructure”. This presentation will discuss these developments based on the experience of the Research Programme in Digital Collections at the National Library of Wales, specifically discussing some recent experimentation with new methods for manuscript digitization and dissemination, including hyperspectral digitization of the Library’s Chaucer manuscripts. The presentation will also discuss the wider embedding of this work within the European Digital Humanities Context, through collaborations with the ESF Research Network Programe NeDiMAH (Network for Digital Methods in the Arts and Humanities).

These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.

2. • The idea of digital library is not new.
• It has been conceived by many people in different ways.
3. • The digital library concept can be traced back to the famous papers of
forever scientist like Vannevar Bush and J.C.R. Licklider identifying to
goal of innovation technologies and approaches toward knowledge
gather, store, find and retrieve as fundamental instruments for
progress.
4. • The research and development activity on digital libraries started in
the early 1990s,
• With the internet proliferation and that internet has created
unprecedented possibilities to discover and deliver human knowledge.
5. • 1991 - This system originally named “e-print archive”.
• Now worldwide known as “arXiv”.
• “arXiv”, was born as an experimental means for making scientific
communication more effective and economic,
- a requirement mostly expressed by the physicists
community. (Ginsparg 1994)
6. • Besides arXiv “Electronic Thesis and dissertation repositories (ETDs) whose
pilot project started in 1996.
• Research paper is economics (RePEC) launched in 1997.
• In 2000 the Open Archives Initiative and then its software was converted to
the E prints Digital Repository software (E print).
-a flexible platform supporting easy and fast set up of repositories of Open
access research outputs.
7. DL initiatives:
• The growth and the popularity of the Internet and WWW resulted in
two major DL initiatives being taken in the mid 1990's in the USA.
• First was the joint initiative of the National Science Foundation (NSF),
Department of Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA),
and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), in
1994, to fund six digital library development projects for a period of
four years, among six academic institutions.
