The target audience for the rap magazine is teenagers and young adults, mainly males between the ages of 16-25. Market research including surveys and a focus group showed that most listeners of rap music fall within this age range. The magazine's male-oriented themes, language, and choice to feature only male artists align with this primarily male target audience. Feedback from the focus group further confirmed that the genre, conventions, and color scheme used would appeal to and be recognizable by the intended target audience.

1. 4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
The target audience for my media product is teenagers and young adults. It would be more aimed at
males as opposed to females because rap is well known for its male dominance. I have chosen this
target audience, because it is very unlikely that pre-teens would read a rap magazine, as it is a music
genre that is mainly aimed at older people due to its sensitive topics. Most people who listen to rap
are young adults or teenagers, which is why I have chosen them as my target audience. I conducted
market research by creating questionnaires on SurveyMonkey and by creating a focus group on
Facebook (focus group contained 5 friends between the age of `16-18’. The market research that I
conducted showed that the people most associated with my music genre are below the age of 18.
The age that I have chosen is shown below by the question ‘How Old Are You’, in my questionnaire
as part of my market research, as 75.5% of my sample are below the age of 25.
The question below showed that my target audience would be mainly aimed at males. This is
because 62.5% of the participants were male. I have used this result to influence my magazine as I
have gone for a very male themed
magazine. Not only by the use of the
rap genre, but in the language used in
the magazine. I have gone for an
aggressive and angry theme, which is
shown by the cockiness and swearing
which is used in my double page
spread. Also, all of the artists
mentioned in the magazine are males,
which emphasises this point.
2. I also feel like my genre of music, which is rap & hip hop, is easily distinguished by my target
audience, which is shown by the answers from my focus group when asked ‘Just by looking at the
magazine, what genre of music do you think this is?’
These results obviously show that my target audience is suitable for the media product I have
created, as they all thought it was rap/R&B, which shows that it is a genre of music that they are
familiar with, therefore they would all be a suitable audience for my product.
These are the rest of the questions that I asked;
‘How does my magazine looks similar to real life music magazines?’
3. These results from my focus group show that my target audience appreciate the conventions that I
have used and have realised that they are similar to real life magazines, which also emphasises my
choice to use them as a target audience.
‘What do you think of the colour scheme?’
4. These responses show that the colour scheme that I have used is suitable for the target audience as
they all have positive things to say about my colour scheme, which shows that they are a good
choice for the target audience.
Finally, I asked,’ Judging the overall success of the magazine, would you buy it?’
This final response shows that my media product was successful in meeting the requirements of the
target audience as they all said they would buy the product.
