In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
Music magazine codes and conventions:
From my research I discovered that these
elements made up a music magazine:
•
Masthead
•
Heading
•
Colours scheme
•
Page numbers
•
Fonts
•
Plugs
NME Magazine My Magazine
Masthead
The font style I used in my masthead is similar to that of
NME. The font is bold to make it stand out and attract
your attention, the font is clean and unbroken
symbolising its straight the point and you get the full
information you’re looking for. I developed on the NME
masthead by adding in ‘The Sound House’ under TSH.
As this is a new magazine I decided to put this in to tell
readers what the magazines full name is but it could be
removed in later issues once the readers become more
familiar with the name.
Heading & Sub Heading
I also took inspiration from the Heading of NME, with the use of
bold red font stands out on the background of black and white.
The text is all capitals as if the magazine is shouting the heading
at you, but also clean again like the masthead. The red font
stands out against the black and white background.
I have developed the subheading in my magazine by not placing
it directly underneath the heading. It does however follow NME
by being a quote from the article linked to the heading in a
different italic font and in quote marks
Colour Scheme
I also developed the colour scheme in my magazine, I decided to
simplify the colours even more by just using red, white an black
with occasional grey highlights. The colours don’t clash and create
a clean look making it stand out but with a subtle effect.
Page numbers & Contents
My contents list * page numbers also
follows similar conventions to that of
NME. I used sub headings splitting the
magazine up into seperate parts. I also
listed the page numbers underneath each
each of the articles featured in the
magazine.
Fonts
The fonts I used in my magazine are also
inspired by NME, I used bold fonts which used
capital letters only on the front cover. The
capitals make the text stand out and are short
and to the point. The font on my double page
spread text body uses a different font which is
easy to read for long passages. The quotes on
the front page and DPS are all in a serif font
which I noticed is used in lots of magazines to
show people speaking.
Plugs & Puff Q Magazine
In my magazine I used plugs & puffs, these are to attract the attention of
the audience and attract new readers. For example, the free poster
inside plug would encourage more people to buy the magazine as
according to my research, my subject audience would be the type to
have posters up in their room.
Barcode
I followed the existing conventions of magazines
therefore I used a barcode. Bar codes are necessary
as they are used to scan the price/stock check and
many other things in a shop. Next to the barcode I also
included the date and issue number.
