Evaluation 3 - Whathaveyou learned
from your Audiencefeedback?
By Delilah Shaw
During the research and planning
stages of constructing our film trailer, I
posted a picture of an audience
research sheet that my group and I
constructed together. We planned out
what our target audience would look
like and what they would be interested
in. By compiling this piece of
information it allowed for us to know
exactly who we were aiming out trailer
at and what we would need to include
to attract our audience into watching
our film. We looked into the age,
interests and hobbies etc. of our target
audience in order to get a better
understanding of why they would like
the Supernatural Horror genre. The
information we gathered from this was
subjective due to the fact that it was
based on our judgement and
opinions. This led us to conduct other
• In the process of making ourFilm trailer we had to gatherinformation from our target audience by
using a questionnaire that we put onto Survey Monkey and sent out to
our target audience via social media e.g. WhatsApp to see what they
liked and disliked within a Supernatural Horror Film trailer. As well as
doing some research on Google.
• The target audience we chose for our trailer was 15 – to mid 20’s as we
felt that our chosen genre – Supernatural Horror appealed more to this
age group.
This age group is suitable to watch films that contain strong language
threats and violence. Violent behaviour can be imitated by younger
children reason why we chose the watching age of 15 and over.
• We found out that most people that enjoyed Supernatural horror films
were also interested in sub genres such as Horror, Mystery and Thriller.
They were really into media that contained these genres, they liked to
watch supernatural documentaries, TV shows such as American Horror
What we learntfrom our Target Audience Research:
From our Audience research feed
back that we conducted using a
questionnaire/survey we found out
that half of the people we asked
stated that their favourite sub
genre from Horror was
Supernatural Horror.
This is because they liked the idea
of being frightened by watch they
are watching and enjoyed the
feeling of them being kept on their
toes, building up tension.
10/20
Majority of our participants favourite
Horror director was James Wan as they
were fans of his movies “Insidious” and
“The Conjuring”. They felt like in his
movies he used the right elements to
create a great supernatural horror film
where he conformed to the conventions
of this genre. E.g. jump scares towards
the ending of the trailer or quick shorts
fast paced scenes that lead to a climax
When we asked our participants what they liked to see in a Supernatural
effects, make up and costumes helped bring the action more to life and
believable in order for them to feel frightened. Others said that they
don’t like when the trailer gives away to many spoilers from the film,
they want it to be brief but still have elements of fearfulness that would
make the audience excited and intrigued to watch it and also contain a
plot twist so that they are not able to predict what will happen next.
They wanted the trailer to constantly consist of suspense to keep them
on their toes. As well as having a cliff-hanger at the end. They expressed
that its vital for a trailer of this genre to have moments of tension to
build up the audiences adrenaline and only a couple of jump scares.
They also wanted to see iconography that was related to the genre such
as settings/locations e.g. haunted houses, mise-en-scene e.g. weapons,
religious icons etc. and to make the genre more recognisable and seem
more realistic.
We wanted to know how our target audience were
most likely to hear about new upcoming films and
our most common response was via a range of
different media platforms. We gathered information
from our Questionnaire, Interviews and the Internet.
• About 75% of people said they heard about new
films via Social media. This is due to the fact that
our target audience is most likely to be heavily
involved in the usage of different social media
platforms such as YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram,
Twitter, Facebook etc. This gives the audience a
variety of information about the Film they are
interested in. e.g. the name of the director who
directed the film or where they can watch the
trailer.
• 50% said they heard about them by watching TV
adverts
• And Posters and Billboards were the least way of
individuals finding out about upcoming films by
only having 20%. This was helpful as it gave us
Responses from our AudienceResearch Interview:
We also found out that Sounds and Music is very important/effective in Supernatural
horror trailers.
• “Sounds can evoke different emotions from the audience”
• “Builds tension and also suspense. It gets the audience ready for what could happen
next, it makes them keep guessing and makes them intrigued”
• “The sound is what adds tension to the film, without it it’s not a horror film.”
This was helpful as we took into consideration the feedback we got from our audience
and incorporated it into our trailer. Making sure that we picked out the sounds/ music we
wanted to use and see what type of effects they had on an audience e.g. how it made
them feel and how it set or changed the mood/atmosphere of the scene.
The information we gathered helped
us in the creation process of
constructing our trailer as we were
able to know what our supernatural
horror trailer needed to contain in
order for it to be successful, therefore
meaning that our trailer conforms to
other trailers in this genre.
• This is some of the feedback we received from our final Trailer.
We put our film trailer onto YouTube and sent
the link to our peers and people from our
target audience via WhatsApp, where we were
able to get information on whether or not we
was successful in making our film trailer. We
receive a lot of positive comments and some
constructive criticism.
The thing that really stood out in our trailer
was the music we used. How to created quite
an eerie atmosphere which links to our
Supernatural Horror genre.
We were also successful in the end scene in an
attempt to scare the audience. Here we
conformed to other trailers in our genre as our
audience wasn’t expecting it. The after effects
and the way we edited our trailer, as in
structure wise was also effective as the
audience were intrigued and it helped to build
up tension to make them frightened.
