Evaluation Question 5:
How did you attract/address your
audience?
TARGET AUDIENCE
 The target audience for our production were aged between 15 and 24
years old. This is because these are the people which watch the thriller
genre more often and enjoy viewing it. Therefore, we have to make sure
that our thriller film is aimed correctly at this age range of people so
that they feel intrigued to watch it.
 In order for our production to be successful and reach our target
audience we had to find out what people within the age range of our
target audience expected from a thriller film. We then researched how
we could get these expectations across effectively to the audience.
PRIMARY RESEARCH-
Questionnaire
 In order to appeal to our target audience we conducted primary
research in the form of a questionnaire to find out what people within
our target audience expect from a thriller.
 This included surveys where we asked people to state why they enjoy
thrillers and what makes them good.
 We created 10 questions for people to answer, we distributed the
questionnaires out to random people within the target audience age
range, ensuring that there was an equal spread of people at each age.
 Once this research had been conducted and analysed we could clearly
see the factors that most people want to be in a thriller and we could
ensure that we include these in our production (e.g. structured
storyline, enigmas, antagonists & protagonists, music etc.)
PRIMARY RESEARCH-
Scene Analyses
 Another form of primary research that we conducted was to look at
existing thriller productions opening scenes so that we can see what
people have been watching in the box-office. Since these productions
are gaining lots of money they are appealing to their audience in the
correct way. This research allowed us to view what sort of things the
audience enjoy to see which could give us inspiration on what to
include within our own thriller production in order to ensure that the
relevant audience will be enticed to watch it.
 This involved watching pre-existing thriller productions and analysing
them in terms of their genre conventions to thriller and how they
convey or challenge these conventions and what messages this gives to
the audience and the overall effect.
 Therefore, we could identify what was successful about the thriller in
order for it to appeal to its target audience and we could use a similar
approach for our own production.
APPEALING OUR AUDIENCE TO THE
PRODUCTION
 When planning for our own thriller production we ensured that we
included the genre conventions to thriller and also that we included the
aspects of thriller that our target audience expect to view within a thriller
film.
 We decided that our production would be a sub-genre within thriller and it
would be classified as a psychological thriller.
 The first genre convention for a psychological thriller that we planned to
use was an innocent girl portrayed as the victim. This character would be
introduced very early on within the production so that the audience can
establish a relationship with the character. Also, the fact that this character
is a teenage girl means that the majority of our target audience will be able
to empathize with this character and feel sorry for her being in this
situation.
 Another genre convention of a psychological thriller that we used was an
antagonist who kidnaps the girl, this adds an enigma for the audience to
guess the answer to. Why did they do this? Etc.
APPEALING OUR AUDIENCE TO WATCH THE
PRODUCTION- TECHNOLOGIES
 The way in which we distribute the production will be able to
address our target audience. Since teenagers in this society
are very technologically active then the best way to get our
production to the audience is to use the internet.
 A good place to start would be on social media, promoting our
video on sites such as Facebook and Twitter and releasing
teasers on sites like YouTube or Vimeo.
 The internet is always on the increase and more and more
people are using it every day. This links with our audience
research where most people said that they watched films by
streaming them online from sites like Netflix. By releasing our
product in this way as well as a physical format gets our
thriller production further into the market for the younger
generations to get hold of.
