Masthead

My masthead was one of the ways I attracted my audience. The masthead
is the largest piece of text on the front cover because it needs to gain a lot
of attention and be the first section the target audience look at due to the
big, bold font. When my target audience look at the masthead it enabled
them to get an idea of what the music magazine ay consist of and what it is
called; helping them remember it for the future. As my music magazine is
called ‘indie rock’ it immediately tells the reader what music genre it is
about, and therefore, what type of music artists and bands they will expect
to find inside. I have also chosen a sans serif font which I felt helps it look
professional yet stylish. I also feel that this font appeals to my younger
target audience as it’s not boring nor too busy and off putting. Overall, I feel
that the masthead will help my music magazine stand out on the shelf and
therefore gain a lot of attention from my target audience helping my
magazine sell well.
Bursts
I also used bursts to help me gain the attention of the
reader. The ‘free downloads’ and ‘the new hot top 40’
enable my target audience to get an idea of what to find
inside my music magazine. This text is also positioned
above the masthead to help draw attention to it, the
reader will immediately read it and will want to find out
more about it. I included the ‘top 40’ due to it being a
popular subject people like to read about to find out
who’s in the charts, and also the same for the ‘free
downloads’, once the target audience has read it they
won’t want to miss out on FREE downloads. Overall, the
bursts are an easy way of gaining the target audiences
attention which will benefit both me and my music
magazine.
Sell Lines
The sell line is another way of attracting my target
audience by including a well known artist. I included a
relevant topic which will help engage my target audience
as it would be an interest to them due to the huge
celebrity it is about. I decided to have a competition in
order to ‘win free tickets to see Lana Del Ray live’. I
thought that this would be a good topic due to the fact
that Lana Del Ray is a very popular, well known singer. I
also decided to have it advertising ‘free tickets’ as no one
would want to miss out on a opportunity to see Lana Del
Ray for free. My target audience are people who are
interested in going to festivals and concerts so this sell
line will help engage my target audience.
I also made a use of colour to attract the reader attention
also. On the words ‘free’ and ‘Lana Del Ray live’ I decided
to have them in a bright red font. The use of colour on
these specific words helped put more emphasis on this
sell lines which therefore helped it attract the audiences
attention as red is a very alerting and bright colour.
Freebies
The freebie advertised on the front cover will
also help attract the readers attention. A free
poster of your favourite band/artist is always a
bonus when you buy a magazine, this will help
persuade the reader in wanting to buy the
magazine. the free poster will help engage
younger people to put up on their walls, which
is who my target audience is aimed at.
I have also used a sticker image in which the
text is in, this helps separate this section from
the est of the magazine front cover. On the
other hand, the font colour also contrasts with
the background enabling it to stand out and
catch to readers eye.
Main Image
My main image broke a convention as my
model is not looking at the camera like the
model does on every other music magazine.
However, I feel that this unusual image of my
model helps portray the indie rock look. This is
due to it firstly being in black and white as this
is an unusual as not many music magazine
have the main image in black and white, and
also the model not looking at the camera, this
helps it look independent relating to the music
genre; indie rock.
Overall, the main image helps the text to stand
out due to the contrasting background and
font colour, this therefore, helps my target
audience to feel engaged within the indie rock
music magazine front cover.
Beyond my front cover, whilst flipping through my
magazine, when my target audience come across the
contents page and double page spread article, they will find
many elements that engage them further into the
magazine. Firstly, the use of images really help draw in the
audiences attention as they are big which helps them stand
out against the text. However, the mastheads of both the
contents page and double page spread article engage the
reader the same way the masthead did on the front cover.
They are in big, bold, contrasting coloured fonts which help
them stand out to the reader making them want to read on
further.
I have also kept to the same colour scheme
as I used on the front cover; black, white and
red. The black and white enables the red to
stand out as read is a very contrasting and
alerting colour to use. The red against the
black and white also attracts both male and
female audiences which is who I want my
music magazine to appeal to, so therefore
the colour scheme is very beneficial.
