‘HOW IS YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?’
In my magazine, I chose to use a middle/working class
representation to fall inline with my target audience. Adding to
this I also ensured the models used were of a similar age to my
target audience. I purposely did this so the audience could easily
associate themselves with the model in the magazine. I also kept
to using both male and female models (a male for my front cover,
and female models for my contents page) the dominant images
are male which relate to the imagery research that I completed on
my blog to see what kind of angles that I wanted to use. I have
therefore tried to establish that both male and female artists in my
genre of music are of equal status. Leading on from this, using a
male model for my main image is more likely to attract a female
audience which falls into the typical audience of magazines aiming
at females, although, the image may appeal to both genders.
FRONT COVER
On my front cover, I chose to try and engage with the female
as well as male audience; this works due to the fact that males
are attracted due to the fact that a male is on the front cover
and females by being attracted to the image of the male. In
doing so people are more likely to associate themselves with
the magazine and creates a relationship. In keeping with this
the facial expression of my artist is unclear, resulting in an
unpredictable feel, which is a common occurrence in
magazines.
The mise-en-scene of my magazine also in keeps with my
target audience as the model now appears as an inspiration
and something to base themselves on.
Finally during my research, I decided to use a male for my
magazine as it follows the normal conventions. Most
magazines use males as they’re models because
stereotypically men don’t buy music magazines, however
women tend to buy the majority. Using a male model will
therefore attract women to the magazine.
SHOT TYPES
- In the majority of images, I decided to use
eyeline shots, creating direct mode of address,
this forms a relationship between the audience
and the artist.
- Using a mid-long shot for my double page
spread allowed me to experiment with effects
over the top of the picture to give it that extra
edge against others.
- Allowing the double page spread to have more
surroundings than those of the pictures on my
front page adds to the mise-en-scene of my
magazine.
LAYOUT
ON MY CONTENTS PAGE, THE USE OF MANY
PICTURES IS EVIDENT AND WAS PURPOSELY
DONE SO TO REACT TO THE WANTS OF THE
AUDIENCE. I DIDN’T WANT TO OVERWHELM
THE AUDIENCE WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF
TEXT ON MY CONTENTS PAGE BUT ONLY GIVE
THEM THE NECESSARY INFORMATION IN
ORDER TO NAVIGATE AND GET AN
UNDERSTANDING OF THE ARTICLES IN THE
MAGAZINE. THIS LEAD TO THE USE OF A
LARGER AMOUNT OF IMAGES IN ORDER TO
FILL THE SPACE. I USED NEAT AND TIDY ROWS
AND COLUMNS IN ORDER TO REPRESENT THE
INFORMATION FOR THE CONTENTS-THIS
ALLOWS MY AUDIENCE TO GO DIRECTLY TO
THE INFORMATION THEY WANTED – THIS
THEREFORE FULFILS ANY NEEDS ADEQUATELY.
IDEOLOGY
For my magazine, I prioritised making my
magazine appealing to my target audience.
In doing so, it allowed me to create
relationships between the audience and
the artist; I carried this out by making
comparisons and similarities between both
the readers and the artists featured. Not
only would this encourage the audience to
pick up the magazine, but also may inspire
the ‘loyal fans’ if this was on a frequent
occurrence.
The use of similar aged models played an
important part in this relationship, this
would change how the audience perceive
the magazine and therefore if it becomes
relatable or not.

  • 1. EVALUATION 2 ‘HOW IS YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?’
  • 2. In my magazine, I chose to use a middle/working class representation to fall inline with my target audience. Adding to this I also ensured the models used were of a similar age to my target audience. I purposely did this so the audience could easily associate themselves with the model in the magazine. I also kept to using both male and female models (a male for my front cover, and female models for my contents page) the dominant images are male which relate to the imagery research that I completed on my blog to see what kind of angles that I wanted to use. I have therefore tried to establish that both male and female artists in my genre of music are of equal status. Leading on from this, using a male model for my main image is more likely to attract a female audience which falls into the typical audience of magazines aiming at females, although, the image may appeal to both genders.
  • 3. FRONT COVER On my front cover, I chose to try and engage with the female as well as male audience; this works due to the fact that males are attracted due to the fact that a male is on the front cover and females by being attracted to the image of the male. In doing so people are more likely to associate themselves with the magazine and creates a relationship. In keeping with this the facial expression of my artist is unclear, resulting in an unpredictable feel, which is a common occurrence in magazines. The mise-en-scene of my magazine also in keeps with my target audience as the model now appears as an inspiration and something to base themselves on. Finally during my research, I decided to use a male for my magazine as it follows the normal conventions. Most magazines use males as they’re models because stereotypically men don’t buy music magazines, however women tend to buy the majority. Using a male model will therefore attract women to the magazine.
  • 4. SHOT TYPES - In the majority of images, I decided to use eyeline shots, creating direct mode of address, this forms a relationship between the audience and the artist. - Using a mid-long shot for my double page spread allowed me to experiment with effects over the top of the picture to give it that extra edge against others. - Allowing the double page spread to have more surroundings than those of the pictures on my front page adds to the mise-en-scene of my magazine.
  • 5. LAYOUT ON MY CONTENTS PAGE, THE USE OF MANY PICTURES IS EVIDENT AND WAS PURPOSELY DONE SO TO REACT TO THE WANTS OF THE AUDIENCE. I DIDN’T WANT TO OVERWHELM THE AUDIENCE WITH LARGE AMOUNTS OF TEXT ON MY CONTENTS PAGE BUT ONLY GIVE THEM THE NECESSARY INFORMATION IN ORDER TO NAVIGATE AND GET AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE ARTICLES IN THE MAGAZINE. THIS LEAD TO THE USE OF A LARGER AMOUNT OF IMAGES IN ORDER TO FILL THE SPACE. I USED NEAT AND TIDY ROWS AND COLUMNS IN ORDER TO REPRESENT THE INFORMATION FOR THE CONTENTS-THIS ALLOWS MY AUDIENCE TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE INFORMATION THEY WANTED – THIS THEREFORE FULFILS ANY NEEDS ADEQUATELY.
  • 6. IDEOLOGY For my magazine, I prioritised making my magazine appealing to my target audience. In doing so, it allowed me to create relationships between the audience and the artist; I carried this out by making comparisons and similarities between both the readers and the artists featured. Not only would this encourage the audience to pick up the magazine, but also may inspire the ‘loyal fans’ if this was on a frequent occurrence. The use of similar aged models played an important part in this relationship, this would change how the audience perceive the magazine and therefore if it becomes relatable or not.
